4th Feb, 2008: Michael Jackson News and Mentionings

For anyone interested here is the official website of Kehinde Wiley...http://www.kehindewiley.com/main.html

:flowers:

wow, thanks for that link to Kihinde Wiley's work, it is really good. Let's hope that Michael may have contacted him in regard to some album cover work.... although a photo of MJ would be awesome too!

I bet he wants that artist to do a new album cover or somethin, hehe.

Thanks for sharing!

^^ :yes::kickass:

I scanned this article that you already mentioned about the NY painter & Michael.

This is from The Independent (UK)

*You might need to save it and zoom in to read it*

:flowers:

Wow! Kehinde Wiley is a man after Michael's own heart! Mixing modern hip hop figures with classical themes is the same thing Michael did in in the YANA short film. Mike probably wants to commission him to do a portrait of him is some classical setting or as some classical figure. I can't wait to see what they turn out together. I'm sure I would love it. When you go to Kehinde's website, you gotta click on "media" and watch the Today Show segment. That is really interesting. :)

Ticie,
The JACKSONOLOGIST

Thanks for the news, especially the Kehinde Wilkey info. :)

haven't read the thread yet.. but I am listening to the radio.. the Hip/Hop DJ was raving about the SoBe.. saying.. "did u see that Thriller drink ad with Naomi"...

nice...

Mama-say, Mama- Sa, Ma-Ma-Hard-Sell.Rhianna throws Michael Jackson a Lifetime

Sorry if this has already been posted Mods

Ed. note: Chris "dennisobell" Molanphy, our resident chart guru, looks at the upward, downward, and lack of movement on this week's Billboard charts: Imagine, for a moment, you're in promotions at Sony/BMG, and you're trying to stoke interest in the 25th-anniversary edition of Michael Jackson's Thriller. This isn't the first time you guys have rereleased the record, and with Michael coming up on his 50th birthday, you've got your work cut out to make him look relevant.
Sure, the obvious move is lining up some current acts to help ***** remix those classic tracks--like bringing in Akon to rethink "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'." While you're at it, try convincing the Grammy people to let Michael perform on the show (what the hell, they need ratings and hey, you can't guarantee that Michael won't have a Britney-in-Vegas-style meltdown...). But then you think:
You know what would really seal it? If we could get a current act...somebody really hot...to sample something from Thriller and have a big, fat hit with it. Like, Justin biting "Billie Jean"...or Jigga rapping over "Thriller"...or something. I mean, Kanye sampling "P.Y.T." was helpful, but that record peaked months ago. We need something hot right now, just as we're dropping the disc...
And then, like a table-dancing angel from above, Rihanna answers your prayers.

Right at the start of February, and less than two weeks before the heavy sell for Thriller '08 begins, Rihanna's "Don't Stop the Music"--"Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" sample and all--elbows into the Top Five on Billboard's Hot 100. And in the same week, the Sony-sanctioned remix of "Wanna," featuring Akon, pops onto the Hot 100 at No. 81.
You'd call this "synergy" if it weren't just an amazing coincidence. Rihanna is on Island/Def Jam, whose übermachers aren't exactly interested in assisting Sony-BMG with its promotional priorities. Jackson's label just got incredibly lucky.
Add to that the fact that "Don't" probably should've been a hit months ago. Originally slated as the third single from Good Girl Gone Bad--the video debuted on BET last July, and it topped charts across Europe last fall--"Don't" was bumped at the last minute in the U.S. for the Ne-Yo ballad "Hate That I Love You." Frankly, "Don't" is so mind-bogglingly catchy, it probably should've been the second single, following up the monster "Umbrella"; it has already out-charted both "Hate" (peak: No. 7) and second single "Shut Up and Drive" (peak: No. 15). Weirdly, it's as if the album's second-largest hit was held back to benefit Michael.
Which it wasn't. But if Mr. Jackson knows what's good for him, he'll pay a respectful visit to Rihanna's row at the Grammys and follow up with a crater-load of fruit baskets.
Here's a quick rundown of the rest of this week's charts:
• No, you're not imagining it--Flo Rida's "Low" really is following you everywhere. After six weeks at No. 1 and more than 2.2 million digital downloads, the song's had one small handicap: radio. Alicia Keys' "No One" wouldn't budge from the top of the Hot 100 Airplay chart, but after 14 weeks, her inescapable ballad finally cedes the top spot. Now, "Low" is officially the most-played song in America--like you didn't already suspect that.
• It took more than three months, but Britney Spears' "Piece of Me" is finally a Top 20 single: up three spots to No. 18. And that's based on sales and airplay that came before the latest law enforcement-assisted hospitalization. Next week: Top 10?
• Lupe Fiasco has his first Top 40 hit with "Superstar" (feat. Matthew Santos), up a whopping 24 spots to No. 36. First blogger to cry "sellout" wins...
• Foo Fighters kinda-sorta defeat Linkin Park on this week's Modern Rock chart. It looked like last week's No. 2, LP's U2 homage "Shadow of the Day," would be the song to evict Seether's "Fake It" from No. 1, but instead the Foos' "Long Road to Ruin" sneaks up to No. 2 and is poised to take the top rung. Seether has been No. 1 on Modern Rock for six weeks and on Mainstream Rock for (no joke) 13.
• Speaking of Modern Rock, in case you've got any remaining doubts about just how sleepy this format has become, last week Rise Against set a new record for slowest climb into the Top 10. "The Good Left Undone" reached the... um, winners' circle in its 30th chart week. It creamed the previous record-holder: 2006's "All the Same" by Sick Puppies took a mere 25 weeks to make the Top 10.
• On the R&B/Hip-Hop chart, there's a race of divas raring to evict Alicia Keys from No. 1, and Keyshia Cole has the edge, up one to No. 2. (You can tell both it and Mary J. Blige's "Just Fine" are hot on R&B radio, because they knock J. Holiday's "Suffocate" down to No. 4 from No. 2, even though the latter is gaining in strength and has a bullet.)
• The R&B/Hip-Hop song that won't die is Justin Timberlake's "Until the End of Time." It just fell out of the Top 10 last week after 20 weeks in there (it debuted last April and peaked at No. 3 back in October), and this week it's back up one notch to No. 13. Never underestimate urban radio programmers' love for an old-school slow jam.
• Finally, the top Ringtone is Henry Mancini's "Pink Panther Theme." It retakes No. 1 from Soulja Boy's "Crank That," after about five months of kids letting their phones Superman that ho.

anyways.. instead of making a separate thread on this.. this should be in today's news thread...

I agree Rasta and I will move it there...

Screw that moron. The Grammys are no doubt DYING for Michael to just show up on their flagging show. It needs help desperately. And its today's artists that are begging to work with Michael. They're so in awe of the man that they don't even believe its him when he calls their asses. And furthermore, get rid of every artist that just so happens to be a product of the Michael Jackson effect, and about 90% of the music industry would just dissapeare. Like Michael said to Ocra, I mean, Oprah, "It'd be empty." His last album went to number one and had a top 10 single despite being completely ignored by Sony. Numer Ones went multi-platinum despite being released at the worse possible time and having only one new song on it. He draws bigger ratings on TV then ANYONE, and EVERYONE knows it. Not relivent my ass.

OK.. Superbowl is done.. OK now we wait for GRAMMY AWARDS..

We are always waitin' for something..

We are very patient..

No one needs to help MJ with anything. People need to know the facts before they talk. I am insulted that the person who wrote that even mentioned JT in anything Jackson. People need to realized that JT is not the KOP or Michael Jackson and JT can never top Mike or try to do any of his songs. The remixes in the Thriller 25 package were done by the guidence of Michael. MJ wanted Akon, Will, Kanye, and Fergie to choose a song that they liked/loved from the classic CD and do their thing.

MJ could have chosen JT, Jay-Z, Rihanna, or Timbaland to do the remixes but he did not. Also, that Rihanna song did not help MJ for anything. When it first came out, it did not even chart or even played on the radio like that. I think the single did well because people remembered that "Dont Stop the Music" was from WBSS.

Damn right, wannabe tell it!

Funny RP I was going to ask you how many songs from that list are owned by Sony/BMG? Its not just MJ's influence that's felt in popular songs that sample it as Rihanna proved (like many others) but also his behind-the-scene influence in terms of ownership of hit records.

As wannabe put it ... irrelevant my bottom!

hmm i don't know if this was already posted but it's a small article from MSN stating how after the superbowl ad there has been a huge resurgence in searching for Michael on the Web. One of the more popular searches are Thriller 25 :) lol im not sure how to take off the extra links tho...

Since Michael Jackson's pop masterpiece debuted 25 years ago, it has inspired a string of dances (check this out), a star-studded remake of the single — and resurgence on the Web.

The most popular "Thriller" searches: lyrics, Thriller 25, world record and this Super Bowl ad (featuring Naomi Campbell, who also starred in this MJ video). The King of Pop certainly knows how to start somethin'.

People have been getting their thrills off other ***** headlines lately:

He faces foreclosure on his Neverland Ranch for this amount of money.

He's rumored to be shopping for a home in this city.

And rare photographs of these three have surfaced.

Thanks mj4life for posting this article I just saw it on MSN.com and there is no doubt in my mind that Michael still continues to 'thrill' people young and old. Rasta Pasta you are right job well done to Michael and his team with this Superbowl ad, the Thriller 25 and beyond indeed his legency continues. Thanks also to the link to the artist Kehinde Wiley's web site ;)

It's unlikely they will stop...I hope one day they will leave it alone and let Mike have Neverland in peace. I never want to see that place destroyed or handed over to the state. I hope Mikes children keep the ranch or if not it is eventually made a public sanctuary/garden park of sorts dedicated to Michael and his dreams for the children and the world... but this is what I think should happen after Mike is...you know:cry:...and if his children don't want to upkeep it as a living residence. Neverland isn't going anywhere!

JACKSON EYES COLLABORATION WITH ACCLAIMED PAINTER

Pop superstar MICHAEL JACKSON is hoping to add art mogul to his resume - after pursuing an up-and-coming American painter for his wares.
The Thriller singer is currently in talks with acclaimed New York artist Kehinde Wiley, whose buyers include Denzel Washington and Sir Elton John.
But Wiley - who is famed for his portraits of urban black men in classic Renaissance scenes - thought the planned hook-up was initially a hoax.
He says, "Michael Jackson is calling me. We're discussing exactly what it will involve. He saw my work at the Brooklyn Museum and was taken with it, so he had his people contact me.
"I thought it was a joke at first, so I ignored it for the longest time. Then he contacted a friend of mine who's an actor, so I knew it was for real."

http://www.pr-inside.com/jackson-eye...ed-r419494.htm

When Ebony had fans ask them questions about Michael's photoshoot, one of mine was about whether Michael saw anything in the museum that he liked...any pieces of artwork/sculpture that he was taken with. They didn't use my question but now I have the answer to it. ^_^ Thanks for posting. Wiley's work is quite interesting.

the thrillicious ad was also mentioned on Charlie Rose last night as one of the better ads. I believe it ranked 5 or something, anyway, it's funny the lady from adweek mentioned Mike's 25th anniv of thriller as the reason for the commecial but no mention of Sobe. thought that was kinda funny.

yep.. that Ad is a bonifide hit.. my friend said he little baby boy.. loved the dancing lizards and tried to do the electric slide to it...

that AD did want Michael and Sony wanted it to do.. showcase Michael indirectly...yet, still having very dominate presence in that commercial...

oh and it was #3 pm the MSN poll yesterday..
