Re: BAD 25 - 2012 - Official Discussion Thread

In order for Bad 25 to gain market appeal, it has to be packed with special features. What I meant is that there are too many Michael Jackson "greatest hits" albums released in the past decade. In 2003, Number Ones was released, which became one of the best selling albums in 2009. In 2009, This Is It (also a greatest hit album) topped the chart. Half of the songs on Bad are included in Number Ones. Casual fans who bought Number Ones or TII might skip Bad 25; unless Bad 25 is going to be a stand-out. If I was just a casual fan, I'd most likely buy the greatest hit album if the special edition is just the original album with a few remixes.

If I was a marketing executive in Sony, I'd not even entertain the idea of setting up a ridiculous high price because that would just turn people away. Of course I'd love to have a deluxe version for hardcore fans. But, the regular version gets to be special; otherwise, what's the incentive for the general audience to get a copy of Bad 25 if they already got Number Ones.

The concert DVD/Blu-ray, on the contrary, doesn't have the over-supply problem. The challenge is how to promote to the mass and make people realize The Bad tour is indeed one of the best concert tours in history, so that they want to re-live the experience.

Just my opinon.

You are absolutely right. I don't have the original Bad, but I have the 14 song +Q voice-over intros version of Bad, so if they re-release it again, why would I buy it if I already have it. I didn't mean in my post that they re-release Bad album with original songs, something new has to be included, not just pack everything in the same package. I was just reading posters comments what should be included in the Bad 25, and if they do include everything requested, that would be the most expensive release in the music history, I would have to sell the house in order to be able to buy it:bugeyed

My proposition, music separately and DVD/Blu-ray in their own package:)

I was thinking myself, what would I do if I were casual music listener (not MJ fan). For example, I have Adele's 21, but I wouldn't have bought it with her concert DVD if the price was higher than normal. I'm not particularly fan of her but like to songs in that album, but not enough to spend any extra for her concert. That I meant when I wrote about casual music fans not buying if the price is too high.
I hope that makes sense.

One question, which one is on charge or has deciding power what is going to be released (music), Sony, estate or both?

I think that the Estate is selecting the songs, but Sony has the final word in what will be released (final tracklist). That happened with Michael album. For example Hollywood Tonight:

"Feemster had the first crack and came up with some solid mixes; yet Sony didn't feel it was quite right and subsequently gave Teddy Riley a shot." Joe Vogel

Re: BAD 25 - 2012 - Official Discussion Thread

BAD25 album and BAD TOUR DVD/BR should not be sold together.

BAD25 should be released like T25. - Two versions - and the normal version is normal CD price.

BAD Tour should be released like nothing we've ever seen before. - Many editions.

One edition for non fans who just wanna see the concert. - Maybe a litte bonus material. - But non fans are not very intrested in that I think.

One edition for fans, casual fans and non fans with a lot of extra material, some rehearsal footage etc.

and then one edition for xtreme fans - a BOX-SET edition with more than one concert and A LOT of extra material and TWYMMF with the kiss, the speciel with Stevie Wonder - some songs that are specially performed and other treats.

Agreed with you. I also have Adele's 21. If they release a special edition of 21 with concert DVD and a few more remixes of the orginial songs. Then, don't count me a customer. It's not special enough to spark my interest.

Bad 25's situation is different. Bad was released 25 years ago. So, there supposed to be a whole new generation of people who may not own a copy of Bad. Yet, Bad 25 is competiting against the greatest hit albums released in the last couple of years. Bad is such a great album that so many songs from the album are number ones, so the most well known songs are already on Number Ones. Casual fans look for value. I know I do. When I buy albums of artists I like, but not fall hard into, I look for an album with the most well-known songs. Would a casual fan buy Bad 25 for Just Good Friends and Speed Demon?

I also agreed with you that it's unrealistic to expect Sony to raid the vault and include everything Michael recorded in the Bad era. But, it's important for them to find the right balance. If they want Bad 25 to perform well, they need to make Bad 25 the album or CD/DVD (Blu-ray) combo worth buying.

Thread cleaned. Could we please try to keep the thread on topic - discussing possible Bad 25 releases.

So we are about the same page:cheers:

One idea would be to release album (remain to be seen what is in it) + and get concert for free (Bad tour concert), wouldn't that guarantee Billboard No 1? I'd like to see it number 1:)
Although it might be considered as cheap trick by some MJ hardcore haters and critics, and would blame to Michael personally for doing such a thing for an album. This post is getting longer and longer as I keep adding to it:)

Note, I wouldn't want to be anyones shoes who decides what comes out, very hard job to make everybody happy with the result.

What is this vault that people keep referring? Is there even such a thing or is it an urban legend?
I have this funny picture in my head that Sony or estate have a vault (like in bank where they keep their money) covered from floor to ceiling of Michael's photos, videos, music etc, basically holy grail of anything that Michael owns :D

I remember back then during the BAD era times how MJ influenced others. There was a commercial for Max Skate Bike using a lookalike. He made me laugh how he ran as if he was running and moonwalking at the same time :D

I hope this BAD era 25 triggers as much influence as Mike did it back in days, but I know it's probably just a dream...

Yes that explains a lot. Unfortunately.

There was only one version of T25. It's just that they had two different covers plus a deluxe version. The actual content is the same though. The only version that is any different is the Japanese version which has Got The Hots.

I don't think there could be any special performances from the Bad Tour because there weren't any songs that were done just as a one off. Contrary to popular belief, Stevie Wonder didn't perform Just Good Friends but simply joined Michael for the end of Bad.

Re: BAD 25 - 2012 - Official Discussion Thread

I just hope they don't put interviews on CDs as they did with the special editions. What was the point? If they do it, it should be put on separate CDs.

There is a bootleg MJ Bad Live CD, it's titled "Nobody Moves Like *****" if I am not mistaken.

Here's the picture of the CD cover:

Re: BAD 25 - 2012 - Official Discussion Thread

^ really? Never seen that. What is that live CD location from?

Yeah man. Back then I thought to myself it's a bootleg, they'll probably release an official one, so I didn't buy it. Now I regret it.
I don't know where it is from. Maybe Rome, Italy.

Let me try to find the CD I saw in the shop, it was nicely crafted.

Correction: it's Tokyo, Japan.

It could be just a bootleg. It doesn't look like official.

It is a bootleg one. That's what I said.

But I had seen it in a normal shop. The CD was nicely crafted. It was a picture CD with the actual shape of MJ in the picture. The cover was different than what you see here. (The cover was the same as what you see on the CD itself)

Re: BAD 25 - 2012 - Official Discussion Thread

it is a bootleg. or let say "legal" bootleg ;)

Re: BAD 25 - 2012 - Official Discussion Thread

I believe those setlist tracks are from Yokohama 87' and I 'd never use that term "bootleg", I called such as "unofficial".

Re: BAD 25 - 2012 - Official Discussion Thread

I believe that "nobody moves like *****" bootleg is the best source for Yokohama (if not, it's live in Japan)

Re: BAD 25 - 2012 - Official Discussion Thread

this one is the same. it was released in japan right after michael died.

Re: BAD 25 - 2012 - Official Discussion Thread

I awlays actually wondered why among so many best-ofs there was never a live CD. The last one we had was of The Jacksons in 1981.

Re: BAD 25 - 2012 - Official Discussion Thread

They could seriously make an AWESOME live album. It could be a compilation of his tours. Possibly a few songs from the Victory tour, some from Bad and some from Dangerous. You could even put it a couple of rehearsals, like TII 'Human Nature' or some from the HIStory tour which we know he sung live.

It's Yokohama. There are three bootlegs floating around with different headers.

Those are all the same show we already know. It's a rip from Yuichi's upload. The first stereo version of Yokohama.

thats what i always thought. but the "nobody moves like ..." cd is from early 2000s, before the yuichi upload. i had this as mp3 and im (not 100%) sure, that it was stereo too. Or maybe im wrong?!? but agree that the rest of the lately released bootlegs are from the yuichi dvd.

I saw it in the shop in the mid 90s in stereo.

And back then I was a member of a Dutch fan club based in the city of Groningen. I learnt through their fan club magazine (The Tribute) in 1992 or 1993 about its unofficial release.

Yep anticipation and waiting causes more excitement... but it also can build expectations beyond reality which can not be fulfilled exactly as you wish. but when it is revealed some not all will appreciate the offering. it may come in small increments piece by piece to prolong and make the excitement last. We have a piece right now and we are salivating over it waiting for more.
