BEFORE YOU JUDGE ME (New Book on MJ's Last Days)

Tavis Smiley: I know everything about Michael, I know more then anyone else about him, Jesus Christ couldn't tell me something that I don't know about Michael Joseph Jackson!
Interviewer: What about the allegations?
Tavis Smiley: I wasn't there, so how would I know what did or didn't happen?

Edit: This is a joke not an actual interview.

You shouldn't have had to post that disclaimer. The sarcasm is very obvious.

Unfortunatly not when it comes to travis
I assumed it was sarcastic too til I read your other comment. But that IS how he's coming across in interviews.

And another thing, if you're going to make snide comments about an artist for years, why would you immediately get tickets and plane tickets OVERSEAS to see their show??!

What kind of snide remarks?

I remember watching his tribute show right after Michael passed. He had Cornel West and someone else on the show and they had quite an intelligent exchange about Michael and his cultural impact and legacy.

Too little, too late in my opinion, but at least there was some effort on Tavis' part to present some kind of intellectual evaluation of Michael's contributions to U.S. culture.

I personally couldn't tell you because I hadn't heard of or watched Tavis before 2009. It was only because I noticed James Ingram was a guest that I watched and it was delightful listening to him describe the recording of PYT.
I also saw the Cornel West show, the one with Berry and Suzanne. Lots of others. He had a good show-well researched and thoughtful for a change.
However, heard his attitude was different pre-2009 from this forum. I did not witness it, but have seen it in way too many others to disbelieve it.

I may watch his show again depending on the guest, but probably cynically, mainly bc of this book.

---------

Allegations etc etc. Hater is the term.

I read the first 3 chapters.. will continue some maybe this up coming weekend!

My first impression is you can tell he has love for Michael but he tends to act like he was in the head of Michaels.... Explaining emotions MJ felt.. which I could understand helps the reader live it, but it also dictates the impression of the reader..

If he did it more so "He must have felt..." or "If I were in those shoes I could imagine that..."

Things of that nature... I'm still open to what the book has to say... Honestly a lot of what I read so far was not about the 16 weeks leading to his death, Tavis time travels a lot - going back and forth... In a well written way, just haven't gotten to the CORE yet I guess... next chapter I have is 'Demerol'

I have read the most wretched review of this book on goodreads.com-not sure if I'm allowed to post the link here or not-I'm asking the reviewer's permission. It sounds absolutely horrible-like Tavis just watched the Bashir doc over and over and over and over and regurgitated all that mess. Just hideous-if what she wrote is halfway accurate, it's really appalling.

I saw the review too.
The book sound like a mess.

Heaven forbid that this gets made into a tv series-I can kind of understand young people who think this is Michael-or maybe people who only discovered him post Thriller/hydrobaric chamber and Elephant Man days. I do NOT understand people in this age group or older who grew up with Michael and knew him from the beginning.

LOL @ the review by a Nina. Lashing out at fans for criticizing the book without reading it when the reviewer clearly stated she DID read the book. Meanwhile Nina herself admits that she had only read one chapter so far. But that doesn't stop her from declaring the book is great and "well researched" and that fans' criticism is unwarranted. LOL @ the hypocrisy.

Is nina his sister, wife, aunt; granny, cousin, niece LOL

I am surprised no one read it yet here... l guess I am the one that read the most.. 3 chapters! I'll say there is more hate on this guy than I feel like he deserves... His opinion and view may be different than ours but you can tell he has admiration for Michael..

Can you make a review after reading the whole book. That would be nice.

^ Sure, may take a while because I did not buy it.. I just visit the book store and spend a couple hours to read etc..

I just heard a podcast where he admits basically that the book is from his view point.. Taking all the info produced of MJ (transcripts etc) to put a story together... He did not want to call it fiction since it was put together with facts - but he fills in the gaps. more like predictive guess with all the info he found.. Wanted to tell it like a story instead of a fact sheet.

At some point Smiley get defensive because the host tries to go at it on MJ a bit..

I listened to this interview

The Pepsi burn accident was not the cause of what led Michael to start using painkilling substance.

It was a scary injury and people were worried but fortunately he recovered from it within months and the injury became an afterthought

So it all gets back to the question as to what really happened

I listened too, and I agree with Brighter 100% on the Pepsi burn/addiction deal.

Unless you loosely connect the dots from that to the scalp surgery he had right before he left for the Dangerous tour with pain meds in tow. Of course, the allegations happened and he abused them THEN because of the anxiety and emotional pain.
He got help for that.

(I'm not sure what happened with the History tour and meds and later unless the lupus just got out of control. Stress and anxiety will do that. I know Metzger traveled with him and he was introduced to propofol for the first time.)

The pushback re the porn Tavis gave was nothing compared to the articulate, educated pushback I saw right here on this forum.

And he brings up Woody Allen and Roman Polanski as justification? Woody was investigated and no charges brought. Polanski admitted guilt and fled the country. They're all apples and oranges cases.

Well, like they said it's fictionalized..

We have no idea when Michael began pain killers.. It would be only understandable that Michael took pain killers after the burn! He had 2nd and 3rd degree burns... And yes his reconstructive surgery was because of the burn.

I am not saying Tavis is this great Michael Jackson advocate fan, but I don't see any reason (yet) that makes him deserve attacks.. IDK, that's just me!

when the injury actually happened, his own primary surgeon issued a press statement saying that Michael did not want to rely on any type of medication during time of recovery........

how can something that happened in 1984 be the reason why something was happening in 2009

^ the same way we can say Something happened in 2005 happened because of 1993... ie.Evan Chandler!

If the burn never happened he would not had needed scalp reconstructing... Which is what Mike said caused his first treatment for painkillers that we know about.

For how much torment Mike went through, we have to expect there is a lot more than what we've publically heard... In May of 2009 if someone were to say MJ was getting drugged to sleep by a doctor at home every night fan would have called that person a hater, tabloid money grabbing piece of s****, "Anything for money" etc.

Michael went through a lot more pain we could imagine, for us to sit here and be like "a publicist said in 1984.." and use that as a gospel of truth is being very 1 sided... FAN sided! we don't know.. MJ's PR worked overtime for years..

the broken ankle, bruised/broken ribs, lupus, arthritis, various other injuries through the years, mental torment... Did we expect him to not taken anything over the years?

Not his publicist

His primary surgeon said that

The Pepsi accident is not responsible

^ ok than... thank you for your input! your verdict is in.. very well put!

lol

That he had a scalp reconstrung surgery in early 1993 is well documented and also the fact that he was in pain and he took pain medication for it. That scalp surgery was a consequence of the 1984 burn. That's how the burn and the drugs are connected.

This notion did not exist until that video of the accident popped out of thin air 25 years after the fact, and after 6/25/2009, cable lnews media was the initial source that linked the painkillers to that accident
