Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary - Estate Announcement Page 66

^^Shoot, no onstage fighting:)

@Elusive, its better that they declined as Randy playing bongos, and Janet doing something during to OTW recording is minuscule in the bigger picture.

Who cares about the "flaws" the media struggled to find? Why let them have it? The reviews are wonderful and I can't wait to see it! I'm glad to see that (according to all reviews) the documentary focuses on Michael as an individual genius who could see his own future, as he wrote on the note that was also mentioned in the review "I will be magic". His story has a great message as well. MJ made the impossible possible, in such young age and finally somebody takes the time to tell this amazing story and apperciate it.

I'm going to place my order of the album soon, I just wish we had a list of the content (are there any exclusive bonuses and if the Blu-ray has more than the DVD). Perhaps someone here could ask the onlineteam?

I really really hope someone can put this on YouTube until the discs are released. Cannot. wait. till. March.

Great reviews! Just few thoughts:

"That said, some of the tales about Off The Wall’s indelible tracks are excellent, particularly when we get a chance to hear the demo for the dazzling Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough.)"

Out since 2001.

"we see Michael leading his brothers in a 1976 American Bandstand performance of Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)"

Impossible.

"in one jaw-dropping moment caught by amateur video – gets into an onstage argument with his brothers about doing the “old songs” which he has no further interest in performing."

An act performed at every concert.

"I wish that Lee had dealt with the early days of Jackson’s plastic surgery"

Hahahaha.. Classic tabloid junkie!

"Michael’s happiness shining through his face – because to a degree, it’s about that face. His remoulded features made him feel reborn."

The biggest crap I've ever heard or read. Honestly!

^And this is exactly what I wanted. I'm so glad that they've put this in a cultural context and we see the evolvement. The drive. The focus. The ambition. No more of little child ruined by the industry. I want everyone to get to experience what I got to experience in real time. And I want to relive this part of my life.
I am so excited I'm beside myself.

I hope Paul McCartney is talked to on the Thriller doc and Janet sits down for a supposed History doc.

I hope too for Paul. And there is a slight possibility that might happen because he recently spoke very positively about MJ. Too bad he's not featured in Off The Wall also. It would be cool to see what he has to say about Girlfriend. But archival footage would be nice also.

Janet - not gonna happen. She's just like Quincy and Randy. But I'm not even that interested to hear what she has to say now. For Janet, archival footage would be much better.

Yes, that's what I wanted to ask as well. Bad25 did not get bad reviews either, but this seems more enthusiastic.

My dream is that when they release the DVD/Blue-ray, all of that footage will be put on it in full as bonus material. Because I imagine that for example only extracts from the Sylvia Chase interview are included in the doc, not the full interview, but the full interview could be put on the DVD as a bonus material. And of course similarly with every other material from which the doc contains extracts but not the full thing. That would be nice.

Yeah. My too! But that's not gonna happen. Maybe the doc on DVD/blu-ray will be longer, the uncut version Branca spoke about that runs 2 hours. But I'm sure there will be no extra material - just like there wasn't any on Bad 25 DVD/blu-ray. Especially full interviews like Sylvia Chase special because that's the footage owned by that TV station, not the Estate.

questloveSo Spizike lemme peep 5 mins of #TheRoadToOffTheWall before the official preview at #Sundance & man....there are many era's of #MJfans but imo the most loyal (lol watch me start a war) were the post #MovingViolation pre #Thriller fans of 76-81. The footage and interviews they've unearthed for this doc is nothing short of awesome. Wow man. #MichaelJackson @michaeljackson

There were some similar articles when Bad 25 came out and some of the critics were missing talk about Michael's face and other controversies, despite the fact Spike mentioned over and over again that this document is all about music, and he said the same with OTW documentary.

Hot damn I have forgotten my twitter password and username, I would have loved to send a tweet to that guy who wrote this:
The transcendence of that despair was a crucial element in the joy of Off the Wall. I wish that Lee had dealt with the early days of Jackson’s plastic surgery, which began, tellingly, as he was making that album. We see the technologically primitive yet blissed-out video for Rock with You, and part of its ebullience is that you can just about see Michael’s happiness shining through his face – because to a degree, it’s about that face. His remoulded features made him feel reborn. Lee’s film takes a deep dive into the music, and it succeeds in making that aural nostalgia exhilarating. But a movie called Michael Jackson’s Journey that leaves out the personal dimension of that transformation is missing a key part of the story.

just to congratulate him that bit of his review is the most bizarre thing I have read from any critic.

Yesterday, the new documentary about the making of Off The Wall, directed by Spike Lee, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. We are thrilled with the reaction and look forward to sharing the film more broadly with Michael’s fans around the world in February.

SUNDANCE 2016 – “MICHAEL JACKSON’S JOURNEY FROM MOTOWN TO OFF THE WALL”

Michael Jackson, in my opinion, is the greatest showman ever to grace a stage. He could sing like no one before or after him, his dance moves were effortlessly complex, and he knew how to put on a show. In director Spike Lee’s documentary “Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall”, we get to see how brilliant Jackson was and a track by track look at one of his best albums.
This isn’t a normal Michael Jackson documentary. Lee focuses on the time in Jackson’s life when he and his fellow Jackson 5 brothers were ruling at the world at Motown records and then their transition to Epic Records, where Jackson would eventually break away from the group and make his first solo album, “Off the Wall”. We then here a slew of celebrities and producers talk track by track about the album, much like Lee’s last Jackson documentary, “Bad 25” (2012). Each song is broken down from how it was made, to its importance, which gives us a true idea of what Jackson was thinking while making the album.
Using a combination of found concert footage and interviews with Jackson and current celebrities, Lee paints a crisp picture of Jackson as an artist and the state of music in that era. We also get an understanding of what Jackson and “Off the Wall” meant to black culture and the black community. He gave them a voice and a face in the predominantly white music scene in the 70’s.
The concert footage Lee got is incredible. Most of the footage, and the best footage, comes from his Triumph Tour in 1981. This concert was incredible and Lee gives us a front row seat. Seeing Jackson rock a bedazzled shirt, dance his heart out, and sing classics like “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” is something to behold. His performance of “She’s Out of My Life” gave me goosebumps.
Most people want to focus on the negative aspects of Jackson’s life rather than his artistry. That is the best thing that Lee did with this film. He doesn’t focus on any of the drama in his life and we don’t need it. We are here to see the artist, the legend that is Jackson and we see him at his best. It is a testament to his brilliance and proves without a shadow of a doubt why he will forever be The King of Pop.
MY RATING – 4/4

The reviews looks great and I can't wait to see it. I'm confused, is there no studio footage of him in this docu?

Hmmph. That doesn't look like the hot wife I remember.

I'm so excited. I can not wait for this. It looks so much better than I even imagined. I'm so glad they decided to tell this story.

there are at least two new generations born since then. I was there buying it but most fans weren't.

Yeah, but I wouldn't like if they pictured that sketch too seriously in the documentary. I don't want it to be like there was some serious fighting between the brothers on the stage. I think it should be noted in the film that it was a staged sketch performed at every show.

Wow! Thanks for that video. So nice to see Rodney & Greg in there! Also Joe Vogel. The Destiny Tour footage from the first trailer looks much better than Triumph Tour footage. I guess The Destiny Tour snippets are from Sylvia Chase special and that's why they are of higher quality. The Triumph Tour footage does not look like they are from the same source as the clips released on The One documentary DVD.

I'm a Prince fan as well, but I think he has always liked to keep a respectful distance from the "Prince/MJ" banter. As he's said before, "Thriller, Purple Rain & Like A Virgin were moments in time" that could never be duplicated. He's resented the fact that each artist respectively, was critically imprisoned by the success of those 3 albums. Every album after is held up against the blockbuster phenomenons. He's well aware that everybody is waiting for him to speak on Mike, a picture to leak, or even a video clip of both of them within yards of each other lol.

Prince spoke briefly to VH1 years ago and said "Thriller changed everything".

Prince holds no grudge or resentment towards MJ. He's included The Way You Make Me Feel, Shake Your Body, Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, ABC, and other songs in his shows

Yeah, I didn't mean his resentment was directed towards Mike, but some members of the media who only look at "Thriller" as Michael's measurement of artistic success and tend to gloss over his work post-Thriller. He looks at "Purple Rain" as his blessing/curse for that very reason.

exactly :)

Also he wouldn't do interviews for the documentary not because of MJ but Prince has never liked giving interviews or talking to the press unless its completely on his terms. He doesn't trust most of the media
