It is a well known cliche that many child stars grow up to be less successful as adults, but Michael jackson buck the trend. However, I can't help feeling that much of the public reaction towards him has much to do with them knowing him as a kid. At one interview MJ said that the public just did not want him to grow up. It is almost like the public mindset is not conditioned for this type of change. The growing child changes roght before our eyes. He becomes an adult yet in our minds eye he is still that little kid.
I feel that the entire Jackson clan have suffered from this as well. Had they become stars as adults, the body of work that they did would have been much more respected, but they are underminded because they were so young.
What does anyone else think. Michael's child stardom has in some way been a factor in the way he has been viewed by the public.

I agree. The general public was used to see Michael as the cute kid, so as he became an adult and started having all this success the public held on the image of that cute little kid, that's why they just can't get over the fact that he looks different know (it's called ageing people, HELLO!), that's why the public is so obssesed with his sexuality, why Oprah just NEEDED to ask if he was a virgin...and it was also the reason Paul McCartney didn't took him seriously when he told him he was buying his catalong.
^_^

Yes but Michael definately entertain this image of a child and there is a big part of him that don't want to grow up
But it's true rumors about Michael being an inberb (is that a word lol i mean without hair on his body), virgin and all that has to do with the way the public sees him
I would like to ask Michael how he viewed as a young teenager the arrival of Randy in the band he must have felt that the public was loosing interest in him because he was growing up

Yes, to a certain point. As for looks, I do not think it has much to do with aging. I think that issue it deeper. People thought Michael was a very sexy and good looking man in the 80's so people excepted him to continue to look like and some people just did not think he needed it at all. As for growing up, Michael has always come across as "innocence" like in the way he talked, in the way he carried himself, Neverland, etc, and that has contributed more so to the way people view of him.

He was trying to grow a little beard for a while...

Even when Michael speaks, he laughts with a giggle in public; however, according to Latoya, when he laughs in private, Michael is LOUD.

Oh we know MJ laughs loud.....i think we're all reserved in public though.

But MAN.....i don't need proof that MJ can laugh loud. Steve harvey interview and Bashir interview...is all i need to say.

"HEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! HE HE HE HEHE! HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! HE HE HEHE" ROTFLMAO

I think MJ is a fun, child-like, silly personality..and the animosity comes mostly from him being himself in a world of SHEEP...and him being unbelievably successful when doing so.

It must be very hard to make that transition, So many childstars just lose it on the way. The public are just not ready for it either. I see so many MJ videos on yutube where j5 fans talk about the cute little michael, and wished he hadn't changed. Yes, there is the aging process as well. Nobody stays the same.

michael is the better talent than his brothers, obviously. he was itching to break away from them when he did. in my opinion, he had outgrown his brothers musiclly in which he felt stagnet (sp?).

the public loved him and wanted to see more of him, know more about him which caused him to withdraw from the public, the media then started to make up stories about michael that were not true because they didn't know any other why to get their ratings, as they still do to this day.

When he announced he was marrying ms. presly, the public was in a state of shock cause they had formed a different opinion of michael by hearing the media' ass backwards beliefs of him.

that's what i think...:p

I don't want childstars to grow up  :ninja: Am I ignorant or selfish?

I think childstars are so successful coz they're cute. but when the turn into adults that won't work no more, and they have to turn up with something better. And that's what happened with Michael!

And didn't he turned up with something better? U bet. And people loved it...what was it?

THRILLER. from that point on, if there was any animosity about MJ being a kid once...it vanished.

I was around when Michael was just a little kid no kid sweeter believe me . Of course We all want to keep that little man but i don,t think it mattered . Because michael was always loved and wanted , the more he performed the more people wanted him. So it really wasn,t just the child thing. He did off the Wall and all what came after making him the biggesr star out there . The world was in a frinzie over this giantic star. Then with thriiler it he became the biggeset star of all time not forgetting bad like who could. No Michael was adored loved like no other. what happened is a lot of speculation but i,m sure we all no there were many tring to bring the man down. Many say he did a lot of it himself which some i,m sure he did he isnt perfect. In the end of the day who knows but i feel in my heart it almost happened over night. but all i say michael was beautiful threw all the years of going up into a man and now that michael is getting healthy again he is looking great. He is beautiful to me inside and out and yeh he lives in a childs heart at times but down we all wish we could go back from time to time. anyways just my though i wonder what all of your thoughts are about it . its interesting topic. nice to read some of the other post cause its funny how we all think different yet think the world of Michael in the long run.

I think people want to obv. still envision him as a child b/c it's just an innocent image. An image void of sex, controversy, and adult habits. Everyone can relate to children so when people see him saying he still thinks he's a child people get upset that he's trying to be something (age wise) he's not anymore.

It's the same issue when you're in high school. If you are a senior it doesn't look right to other seniors or your friends for you to be hanging out with freshman. And on the other hand freshman can be annoyed that someone older is trying to act young still. So if there's a senior or even a college student hanging around freshamn and/or underclassmen people scoff at the idea b/c in reality they just don't fit into that demographic anymore. :/

But beyond the child image, people always want to envison MJ as some being void of any race, sex, normal habits, and things we can relate to. Now that he wears suits and formal wear instead of his crazy awesome outfits, he finally seems down to Earth. We've never seen him with facial hair and when he was growing a beard, and had a 5 o clock shadow in LWMJ he once again seemed more down to Earth. Why do you think Oprah and all other interviews ask him such prodding questions? B/c we all want to believe that MJ in fact eats, sleeps, walks, talks, and possibly has sexual relations just like the rest of us. But in reality his whole life he's had to create a farse, super ego image, or life style that reflected he was something godly or above everything else.

Yes i really see that so much when it comes to michael too. So sad people can,t except for the person he is inside in stead of exspecting him to be somehing he isn,t.
yes you are so right . I do wish that people could see that he doesn,t act childish as much as relates to the younger ones cause he relates to them cause as Michael says they don,t judge him they except him for who he is. I do think how ever that since all he,s been threw it really has made him grow up maybe more than he ever wanted. but maybe for Michael he is much better off .

The transition from Off The Wall into Thriller changed his image as a teen idol he changed the way he dress and created signature dance moves, he simply recreated himself :)
