More updates from Ollie at Odeon

So it seems they have no information at all.
I don't hold out any hope at all for Odeon showing it. The ship has sailed.

So how do you explain they declined to show it but have no information on it?

It looks to me like you've endeavoured to absolve The Estate of responsibility here without a strong reason to do so. It can't always be someone else's fault. Through all of those complete and utter failures that the Estate have crashed their way through over the last 9 years there is one common factor.

P.S. Cineworld were posting similarly cryptic "we can't 100% confirm this yet" tweets weeks ago regarding Thriller 3D and then they'd turn around and emphatically confirm it wasn't happening. I wouldn't read too much into it their wording.

Yah. That was me asking questions. Heh. starlightgrove! :) Looks as though they know nothing at all.

Too bad they tied this in with a subpar movie. I was going to go see Thriller but to take all my family by the time we got popcorn, candy and drinks it would cost me $100. I hope who ever sees it enjoys it. That’s way too much to spend on Jack Black.

If there was a non-3D or non-IMAX version that was shown with the regular version of House, more people would have seen & known about it, as there isn't a lot of movie theaters with IMAX. I don't think Thriller 3D was advertised much. I didn't see it mentioned in the TV commercials for the movie. I don't know if it was mentioned in trailers shown at theaters. Jack Black mentioned it on Jimmy Fallon, but not everybody watches late night talk shows. Jimmy & Questlove said they hadn't heard about Thriller 3d. So it was probably a surprise for the most of the general public who went. IMAX also costs more than a regular sized screen. If a movie is 3D on any screen (including IMAX) that is extra too.

This is a debacle. I just don't understand this whole situation. Why wouldn't cinemas jump at the opportunity to show Thriller? And why isn't it advertised everywhere!?

More important question: when are Branca and Co. going to be replaced as executors?

Well, it wouldn't make a lot of sense to advertise it everywhere, since a lot of places don't have IMAX, especially smaller towns (in the USA). Why advertise something in places where most people don't have access to it?

The Executors won't be replaced ever, because the beneficiaries are being well taken care of and that's who they work for, after all. Once the Estate exits probate, they will no longer be Executors, but I believe it has been stipulated that they will continue to oversee the Trust Fund as board members and they will assist Michael's children to administer said fund.

It has been hugely successful, judging by the buzz on twitter. There have been TONS of people raving about it on that platform.....many of them high profile celebrities as well as ordinary folks.

They should show Thriller 3D before normal 3D and 2D screenings too. Not just IMAX. It would get a lot more attention that way.

This. I don't understand why Thriller has to be only shown in 3D and that in only IMAX cinemas. They remastered it so why can't they show it in non 3D cinemas? Would people not care about it unless if it is shown in 3D? Did they only remaster it for 3D? It's a shame that they have totally neglected the non 3D formats, because 3D isn't even that popular.

Saw it last night. Impressive. The quality was amazing! Really want to see it again but 18 bucks per ticket is too much lol. Also the movie wasn't bad either.

I would actually prefer seing it in 2D. - Even if tickets cost the same I would choose 2D.

In the UK the BBFC certified 'Michael Jackson's Thriller' as being rated '12A' for both the IMAX 2D and 3D versions. That was done in August '18.

So in the UK at least there should have been the option to show it in either 2D or 3D at IMAX venues.

http://www.bbfc.co.uk/releases/michael-jacksons-thriller-1983

So far only 2 cinemas in the UK have been showing the film.

PictureHouse in Bradford is showing the 3D version, and I noticed it's running until at least 4th October(!), but Light Cinema in Cambridge doesn't mention Thriller at all on its site, so I have no idea what they're showing.

In May '18 the BBFC certified thriller as rated '12' for the 'video' format which includes DVD, BluRay,streaming / on demand.

It's clear the MJ Estate had plans for wider cinema viewing in the UK, as well as for a home release at some point. It looks doubtful that the former will occur now, but maybe we'll see the latter.

I hope so. - Since I can't see it in IMAX anyway since there is only 1 IMAX in Denmark very far from where I live. So a Blu-Ray release would be perfect. - or better yet a 4K UHD. - But I guess it will be released in all formats.

Darren Hayes seems to be the biggest celebrity/musician MJ fan ever! I mean, his love for Michael is REAL! Love his obsession/enthusiams/appreciation for Michael so much. Wish I could do the same and watch Thriller at the movies over and over and over again. I'd be in MJ heaven.

So what's his username here? haha

Anyway, I'm booked onto a train in the morning bound for Bradford. If any fans gonna be at the 1810 screening of Thriller 3D tomorrow evening say hello, I'll be by myself and travelling all the way from Scotland (thank you Estate!!).

Yep. I saw it. Yes. It was awesome.

Amazing quality. The elements were spaced out in 3D superbly well (which is surprising as "Thriller" was never intended for 3D), the sound effects were awesome and they jumped around the room a lot -- a really nice touch I liked was that the volume was upped a bit when the dance sequence kicked in which was amazing. I could almost feel the bassline in my chest.

The new ending scared me a lot as well -- it's not a completely new ending, but yeah, I won't mention what the ending is for those who are waiting to see it (unless you PM me or something), it would ruin the surprise :D.

I also had a free poster which I'm gonna frame now. A few of the people I said to in work were like "you're mental" but it was worth it that much for me to travel up to Cambridge from South Wales to see it.

Just wow. The quality had to be 4k or very near it.

The only thing that did let me down was that some sound effects in the dance section weren't present (as others have mentioned, the dance starts off a beat I believe). I can't remember which parts but if anything, that is the only thing I can complain about -- it's still done very well but more detail could have been done for that section.

I wish I could do it again, but it just isn't feasible for the sake of 15 minutes also. If it comes down closer, I'm gonna see it multiple times.

Pretty sure I'll be travelling even further so I feel you!

I wonder if I can get a poster tomorrow...

It's well worth the effort mate. It was for me.

They had a fair bit of posters when I was there (but they thought they didn't have any when I asked, but they had a look and they had them then), the showing I went to only had 10 people in it... I don't think some of those people had posters either. They started giving them out yesterday basically but they were posting the posters out to people who didn't get them when they went.

Tomorrow is your last chance by the way... it's going after tomorrow.

A lot of effort was put into this -- it's very evident. Maybe the most successful project the Estate have done without really splitting hairs?

I got a 40 pound return from Glasgow. Sometimes you can find cheap advanced singles (even if not in advance!).
