UK Janet fans - did you buy Discipline?

Promotion is one thing. Janet is an artist who has to do promotion. She hasn't done it for some years now on this side of the water and that is why she has fallen off the radar. Plus her last couple of albums were not great. Lazy r&b as I call it doesn't sell well. It has to have melody, good beat and she needs to promote it.

yeap thats why shes done nothing over here and i guess europe. that music doesnt sell well over here

i am calm and as i said my post was basically a reply to the quote u posted on here not to u.
i found the quote very offensive and mean thats all. the poster was quite obviously trashing janet based on the sexy nature of her songs and thats just preposterous in my book.
if u dont like an artist simply ignore their stuff but u certainly dont have to bash them in every chance u get.
i know that the teen market prefers rihanna over janet because she's closer to their age but the teens are not the only music buyers. janet's music is supposed to be for mature audiences so whom the teen market prefers is not even an issue here. i believe that if she was getting more promotion and radio airplay in the UK the album would have had bigger sales.
after all we gotta keep in mind that janet is more of an american icon than an international one. having said that i dont think janets fans should be disappointed that the album didnt do well in the UK

The radio caters more or less for the young teenage market, so if Janets material is pornographic or adult material and not for teenagers, one could hardly expect it to get airplay now, would one? Maybe it is too adult for radio, also maybe the adults are not buying it cause they don't want their children to hear it.
 
keep digging because none of those assumptions explain why The Velvet Rope done so much better, being the more "adult" of the two.

it's simple stuff.. the album is relatively flimsy, she's not getting airplay and has lost touch with the Pop market over the years..
 
the velvet rop had some good pop dance songs on there. songs that more catered to the europe/uk market hence whay songs like together again did so well. shes gone over to the R&B side to much for euro tastes with weak songs and no real promo.
 
^ R&B, hip-hop and soul (both American and British) are very much alive in the UK scene and have been for a long time.

Rock With U is more Dance/Pop than most of the top 10 singles in the UK right now.
 
nah dont agree with that. uk R&B has always had a poppy feel to it. slow R&B jams ala more the american market like the janet song she did with nelly in the video have never done great in the uk of course theres always exceptions. as janet as gone more R&B her success has gone done in the uk.thats no coincedence

Janet has never been that big outside of the U.S. and Japan anyway, so I don't understand why some are suprised by her sales in the UK.
 
there's no such thing as "UK R&B".. the closest thing is basically soul (Lynden David Hall, Lemar, Winehouse, Craig David, Adele, Joss Stone) - no "poppy feel" there. and UK Hip-Hop is very much like the US Hip-Hop-soul then you have grime and once-famous UKG.

and "American market" R&B that you're speaking of is currently residing in the Top 10 UK charts.

i've already said she's lost touch with the general icky Pop audience over the years, but there isn't a more Pop song out right now than her Rock With U. and it's a strong tune, imo.

still.. the whole album isn't as strong as a select few tunes on there..

have to agree to disagree on that one. uk soul acts such as lemar are very pop edged imo.have to be to have mainstream hits. as i said thats why janets gone done shes moved away from songs like that over the years to the american market and her success in the uk has suffered. if there was no difference that wouldnt have happened
 
Lemar?! he's of the soul singers who are heavily influenced by slow "American market" R&B and Neo-Soul. to top it all off, the ponce sings with an American accent, fgs!

and your R&B Vs. Pop analysis still doesn't explain why we have US-retrospective Soul acts like Winehouse (#1 album), Duffy (#1 single), Mark Ronson (#7) and Adele (#5) on top of the charts and American R&B acts like Rihanna and Kelly Rowland in the Top 10 right now.

there's really no such thing as UK urban (R&B/soul/HH/Dance) music - we stole all that ish from the Yanks and it has become Pop music and still heavily in rotation alongside the real American deal.

Last Janet's album I bought was The Vevet Rope and I agree it was her last good album. I don't expect Discipline is better than All For You and others, I didn't buy it and I'm not going to. I really like Janet as a person but it's not a reason to buy her music if I don't enjoy it anymore. All her songs sound much the same to me since 2001.

I agree with Datsymay , if we are interested in janet its beacause shes mj's lil sis and anyway we have the right to give our opinion even if you cannot bear it .

Here in France the figures are lower than in the UK , only 2016 copies for the week wereas michael is number 1 for 3 weeks and has already sold almost 150 K in France within 4 weeks .

It got to 63 here, and I am upset about that. This was meant to be Janets comeback record and I just dont understand how it can sell so disappointingly.

I'm hoping it will climb over time, but how will this look. Janet debut with 3,000 copies at number 63...:unsure:-_-
Janet is meant to be touring here too.

There is more than just America in the world, Janet is an international artist, I hope Island Def Jam knows that.:(

Janet did not do any promotion outside the USA, and even in America she barely promoted until the few days before the album was released.

It'll climb up the charts when she goes to Europe, and especially when she tours.

Island Def Jam doesn't realize Janet is an international artist, I don't think so. Mariah isn't, and neither are anyone else on their label. So I do not think they are handling Janet as an artist properly like Virgin already knows since they took her from off the back of Rhythm Nation (A&M).

When i say " we" i think at least Datsy and I , i wasn't speaking about people i don't know .

I got interested in janet back in the 90's because i became curious about her being a michael Jackson's sister .
I used to like her a lot with "Janet" and "TVVR" and even "all for you" but right now noway .

"children's taste" ? well , if both children and adults like you that's just mean you are a UNIVERSAL musician , that's where she wanted to come .
 
It's very sad to read about the low sales of Janet's album, but to be honest The Velvet Rope was her last good album. After that, everything went down the hill. There were like only one/two songs good on an album. Unfortunatelly it's not much better with her new release. I downloaded the album first to see if it's worth buying, and I am not impressed at all.

but children shouldn't be listening to Janet. Janet doesn't make music for everyone like Mike. her music is for adults only.

music in the uk is in decline full of brit pop crap boybands and girl groups that can not sing to save there lives there are no music shows on main tv stations like top of the pops which i think helped janet in the past people looked forward to seeing her dance on the show but now there is nothing like that to showcase her. i got janet's album on the day it came out on first play i was a bit disapointed but now i love every track on it. it's her best album since all for you

yeah, maybe back in 1990s but look at our charts now it's full of soul acts (Winehouse, Adele, Duffy, Alicia Keys, Temptations(!) etc. etc.) and Michael Jackson lol we're having a great run especially with our own talent to be exported in America. i'm actually cheesily proud.
