Michael Jackson's next posthumous act: The music video as tweet

by Jon Fingas | @Jonfingas | 4 hours ago

Sony has used all kinds of technological tricks to sell you Michael Jackson's posthumousXscape album, ranging from streaming music offers to life-size holograms. Its next move is something you're more likely to experience first-hand, however. The company's Epic Records label will premiere MJ's latest music video, "A Place with No Name," in a Twitter post; visit @MichaelJackson at 10PM Eastern tonight (August 13th) and you'll see the late King of Pop's promo attached to a tweet. Yes, it's ultimately a publicity grab for a music legend that doesn't need any stunts to capture the world's attention. With that said, there hasn't been a major music video launch on Twitter before -- it'll be interesting to see if Jackson can lure people away from the cat photos and social updates in their timelines, if just for a few minutes.

Never before has an album ever made history like this or ever been this well promoted or technologically advanced.
- Promoted along side Xperia Z2, Sony's flagship, album came free with phone.
- Groundbreaking hologram performance that cost millions.
- Many TV adverts and good airplay.
- 2 documentaries.
- Announced on Good Morning America and was a top news story on both entertainment and technology on Sky News.
- Loving You on Radio 2's A-List playlist.
- A Place With No Name first official music video to air on Twitter and to be promoted on So You Think You Can Dance.

This album has definitely been promoted well, what more can they do?! Oh we'll see ;)

And let's not forget Usher and Justin's involvement and big name producers and remixers. Oh, and the Jeep tie-in.

True, there has been good promotion so far but it has also been a bit disjointed in my opinion. Here are some examples:

-after the billboard performance and huge ratings, STTR was not made available to radio or promoted via banner ads on iTunes. Also no new banner ads for the album that I am aware of
-there was no official announcement about the bridging single LY. They also didn't release a lyric video for the song to help with streaming
-following the buzz for APWNN, there is no push so far to get the song radio airplay like they did with LNFSG or to promote the song/album via additional banner adds on iTunes. This is important as the album has not performed as well as others in terms of digital sales
-they waited a bit too long to release the second single and have not done consistent promotion in principle countries where the album started to fall such as the UK
-the APWNN video seems to have been made with a conservative budget and falls short of some expectations

I don't want to sound negative, but I guess i have very high expectations when it comes to promoting Michael's work.

There was no bridging single Loving You. Why should it be announced? It was just a rumor.

It was an promotional single, it didn't had to get special attention. It was just an way to further promote the album.
I mean was there an music video for Butterflies/This Time Around?

Are we sure about this? Strange that the song made it on the UK radio playlist then

Yes I am sure about it because it was only played in the UK. BTW brigding single Loving You should be released regarding Damain ******* this week on Monday Augsut 11th.

I think it was because fans started to request the song according to the rumor that it is going to be a bridge single.

It was played (it is still played) in Croatia too.

Loving You still playing on Radio 2 UK. Heard it this week :)

Also saw the APWNN video on digital music channels :)

Does anybody knows why D.A.M.I.E.N.S name gets censored, whenever it will be posted?

They keep playing Loving you everyday in my local radio station Nile fm i heard it twice today

This is a bit off topic but I was just listening to the iPod on random... The 2010 version of Do you know where your children are came on and man. They had something going on with the guitars. I wish they would have just built of that and left the guitars in the entire song. Worked much better as a rock song! Too bad. Miss the ball on that one. Not that I dislike the new one entirely, I'm sure many of you would agree.
