12th Feb, 2008: MJ News and Mentionings

Here's my little Thriller 25 purchase story.

At lunchtime I went to the Best Buy on Fifth Avenue and 44th Street, in New York City. When I went into the store I was looking for some type of promotion, posters or something, but I saw none. I walked around the story looking for T25 and didn't see it. I finally asked a sales person if they had it. She said it's on the FEATURE RACK. I went to the Feature Rack and still didn't see it.

I went back to the sales person and asked her to SHOW me where they were. She took me back to the Feature Rack and ALL OF THE THRILLER 25 CDS WERE GONE! I and a very attractive young man had to wait until someone went in the back to get more copies of T25. That put a big smile on my face!

'Thriller' at 25: When ***** Wasn't Wacko
Revisiting the King of Pop's crowning achievement By Michael Shilling
Special to MSN Music

Boy wonder. Genius hit machine. Walking wounded. Gothic creature. When talking about Michael Jackson, it's impossible to encapsulate the pre-eminent pop star of his generation in one snarky phrase or backhanded compliment. The truth is, there are several Michael Jacksons, and all of these personae equally speak to a man who is, at heart, an enigma -- equally talented and bizarre, yet insatiable for perfection and attention.

***** is the prime specimen in the Petri dish of America' s cult of celebrity. And on the 25th anniversary of his iconic studio masterwork and the best-selling album of all time, "Thriller," he deserves an assessment that focuses on the music, not the misadventure.

When the Jackson 5 burst upon the scene in 1971, Michael was the shining centerpiece in a truly impressive musical package. On the strength of totemic singles such as "The Love You Save," "ABC" and the ever-present "I Want You Back," Michael and his brothers -- Marlon, Tito, Jermaine, and Jackie -- were a dominant presence on both the Billboard Pop and Soul charts throughout the '70s. But as the "Me decade" drew to a close, Michael was starting to feel the constraints of working exclusively within a group dynamic. To branch out, he appeared as the Scarecrow in the film adaptation of "The Wiz," which starred Jackson 5 mentor Diana Ross. During production, he met musician, producer and composer Quincy Jones (who shepherded the score for "The Wiz"), who agreed to man the decks for Jackson's next solo record. It was, to say the least, a match made in musical Heaven. In the summer of 1979, the first fruit of their labors, "Off The Wall," was released.

"Off the Wall" showed an utterly new side of Michael Jackson. Gone was the bubblegum, in favor of the funk. Gone were the cute-for-cute's sake lyrics and super-smooth, easily digestible production. Gone, too, was the sense of formula; indeed, "Off The Wall" expanded the boundaries of dance music, deftly utilizing the rhythmic conventions of disco while replacing its sleazy-silly vibe with sincerity and sophistication.
Michael's voice, too, had grown in range and chops, and found a perfect home inside Jones' stellar arrangements and plush, deep sonic landscapes. The record spawned four top ten singles, two of which -- "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough" and "Rock With You" -- are embedded in any basic understanding of pop music. "Off The Wall" would eventually sell over 20 million copies worldwide, and net Jackson his first series of honors as a solo artist, including a Grammy and two Billboard awards. Dominant as it was, the record could not even begin to hint at the level of musical mastery that Jackson had up his sequin-gloved sleeve.

Recorded in the spring of 1982 and released late in that year, "Thriller" shares a place with LPs like the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper," the Sex Pistols' "Never Mind the Bollocks," and Nirvana's "Nevermind" for the way in which it completely changed the entertainment business. Like those records, "Thriller" was a cultural juggernaut, but unlike them, it wasn't directly tied to any social movement, such as, respectively, '60s counterculture, punk rock, or Generation X. No one associates "Thriller" with part of something bigger; it simply is something bigger.

And it wasn't just the music -- still stunning in its brilliance, range, and versatility -- that gave the record its indelible cachet. Hard as it is to imagine given his current standing as, to put it kindly, a world-class weirdo, the image of Michael on the cover of "Thriller" was one of goodness, purity, and benevolence. (Story Continues On Next Page...)

(...Story Continued from Previous Page) Kids swooned, parents approved, and critics fell over backwards to praise, praise and praise some more. It was the Perfect Storm of pop-biz beautification, and listening to "Thriller" now, a generation on, what's most stunning is the degree to which the record doesn't sound the least bit dated, doesn't have a bum note in its grooves, and seems to encapsulate a certain timeless grace, equally definitive and effortless.

Jackson's post-"Thriller" career is commonly thought to be a sharp turn for the worse; the music suffers, the face distorts, the accusations fly. However, while never again reaching the heights of "Billie Jean," "Human Nature" and "Beat It," what Jackson offered up was still pretty slamming. One needs only listen to "Leave Me Alone," from 1987's "Bad," "Remember the Time," from 1991's "Dangerous," or "Unbreakable," the lead-off track from 2001's "Invincible," to see that a talent this mighty can only fall so far. All three discs are, to say the least, solid offerings, and had the regrettable accusations, sordid details, and bizarro lifestyle not colored the context, these records would no doubt be viewed in a more objective light. For what remains, at the end of the life of Wacko *****, are the tunes and the talent. Twenty-five years after it initially stormed the airwaves, and 100 million copies later, "Thriller" is still incontrovertible evidence of Michael Jackson's place as, unsullied or otherwise, the King of Pop.

I disagree with some of his opinions, probably because i know the truth behind them.... but he says some very true and aspirable things about Mikes achievements... like "No one associates "Thriller" with part of something bigger; it simply is something bigger." -- Veryy true Thriller will always remain the biggest to be compared to.
and [talking about records between Bad-Invicincible] "...to see that a talent this mighty can only fall so far. All three discs are, to say the least, solid offerings; And had the regrettable accusations, sordid details, and bizarro lifestyle not colored the context, these records would no doubt be viewed in a more objective light."
--that is so true and is also kind of what we hope them to realize.
I think Mike is doing something great and I can't wait for some new material for his album!

The Video messege seems cool i'm surprised there isnt a big discussion about it suppose no one has seen it unless its the one from that awards show in france

Absolutely. This is why it is ridiculous that programmes like the grammies left such a significant landmark out of their programme, It makes them lose credibility.
MJ is doing his own pr. He didn't need them afterall.:D

Yep! The grammy's ignored it but that's okay. MJ will make sure EVERYONE knows what the deal is, with T25!

That MSN.com article has some very nice pics of Mike--25 photos. Just click on the link that says 'view photos of Michael Jackson.' Too bad they had to resort to the wac..jac.. name calling, but just ignore it, at least Mike's getting some pr.

I love all the positive news Mike's been getting!
btw i already wrote this somewhere else but the commercial for Thriller 25 aired on VH1 like an hour ago here in NYC. I expect it to be airing more often on different channels.

Don't sleep on this one y'all :D

I love seeing him getting so much coverage for his music.

Thanks for the news.

Thriller 25 is the top story of the largest newspaper in the south which is the Atlanta Journal Constitution, even with the side negatives, it's huge how an album garners so much attention and praise. Sony did the right thing because the whole music industry as a whole owe a huge debt to Michael, when Thriller came out in Dec 1982 the music industry was very similar to how it is today with sales at an all time low and that album ushered in the mega selling albums era that many stars from Prince to Madonna and later N'Sync and Backstreet Boys became a part of until the industry crashed again this decade.

good points.. and I hope more fans can see the GENIUS.. if how and why T25 was done..

we have always wanted the focus back on Michael's music.. especially after the trial.. but I guess many (including myself)..did not know how and if it could be done..

well, Team MJ and Sony are making a hell of effort... and I am so pleased to finally get to this point .. and watch things unfold...

This is GENIUS...

Albums of the Year usually have pretty good sales after the Grammys, as well as other winners. CA-CHING$$$$$$$$$$$

Can't emphasize enough how much I LOVE the Businessman Thread.

I also agree with what Rasta said above. This is a genius move on Sony's and MJ's part. Sometimes you have to look and think outside the box to see the reasoning why some things take place and are done the way they are done. This T25 release could not be a better lead-in into MJ's new music. PATIENCE, y'all, PATIENCE!

Look, I love Thriller and all, but it pisses me off that this is basically the only album that ever gets any acclaim from people. THRILLER THRILLER THRILLER! MARSHA MARSHA MARSHA!!! Thriller this, Thriller that...

My goodness his other albums are great---just because he can't beat his own record in sales doesn't mean he hasn't made other great music!

OK, enough of my rant lol.

IMO there is no need to be pissed off...

Thriller made alot of people millions and a record company Billions...

sure his other albums are great.. and there are many people who bought them... it wasn't BAD, DANGEROUS, BLOOD ON THE FLOOR, HISTORY, OR INVINCIBLE.. that broke the color barrier not only on MTV but the whole radio format in America and world-wide...

reading people's recollection of the Thriller-era .. just makes me really understand why a big deal should be made of Thriller..on its 25th Anniversary...

From everything I see and read; I think Michael is being veery smart by not releasing any new music now- letting the celebration of Thriller make people remember what was the reason he is a legend. You see people remembering the Thriller era, people remembering why they loved this as youngsters- its people doing the promotion- because it brings back good memories.
And people are reminded of the fact that he destroyed the borders between "black" and "white" music etc......

Whatever happened with not making a tribute to Thriller on the Grammy show ( it is rather peculiar, no way of denying that!)the fact that it was ignored (?) almost makes it more significant, in a strange way? Its like there was a big hole in the story, and in a way, that makes the whole story sound fake.
I don`t know if that makes any sense, but that how I feel.
Like someone tells you a story, and the part that is obviusly missing, is the one thing you keep thinking about:unsure:

very good analogy :mello:

1) Sony-BMG/Legacy/Epic really do the promotion, what is great;

2) Michael Jackson was pure classic when he did not appear on Grammies; since this is not project with new material, I personally not even really much disappointed. The less public see real Jackson in action, the more it will feel hunger. With this, Michael maybe will be able to appear on Grammies next year if he will release new album.

And, if Grammy's bosses thought they would "punish" Michael when cancelled "T25" tributes, then they were mistaken, because:
-- Michael does not like covers, remixes and re-releases as whole phenomenon, so on his sole wish none of that would ever appear or happen. However, he understands that for commercial and marketing reasons all those things can be needed so he endures is, but not much more than that.
-- quality of Grammy show may have suffered much more than it could have sense.

Rasta Pasta, can you post the pics that msn.com has on MJ? I can't seem to click on the link that goes to the next picture. Thanks.

BTW, Access Hollywood is going to do something on Neverland. I saw this last night and TSCM made a post about it on the MJ Expose thread. The words that they used to describe NL were "desolate", "abandon". Now, let's not forget that it is the MEDIA and SBPD that made sure that MJ would not live in NL anymore and I find it very interesting that AH is doing this crap when Thriller 25 comes out today. Blah.

ET just did a nice little segment on Thriller 25 with a snippet of an interview with Quincy Jones.
All day today i've been seeing the Thriller 25 commercial or hearing his songs on the radio or on television. I'm so happy for him

exactly!!

if this is true.. I can also see why Michael didn't go thru with the 2Seas deal... I can not see.. how 2Seas could be doing all what Sony is doing and has planned for T25...

oh by the way.. listen to the 1st podcast episode..

and thanks MsMo for posting such good Sony/ATV business news..

KA DAMN CHING.. ALL OVER THE PLACE, MJ

Oh yeah, I agree with you on that, Rasta and Sugababe. When I was watching the Grammys or Shammys, I was thinking about the CA-CHING that MJ was getting. HEEEEYYYY!

Ok, I watched Extra and they talked about MJ in their "Rumor Control" segment. They said that Thriller 25 is one of the most antiscipated album of the new year. :)

Access Hollywood talked about Thriller 25 and how it was Billy Bush's idea to re-release Thriller in a remixed format. They talked to Quincy and I forgot what he said. That new video that MJ did was from the NRJ thingy a few weeks ago. They are calling it "new" but in the fan communities, it is not. I think that video is posted on the MJ official website. They talked to John Landis about the Thriller video and how it was almost destroyed. However, I forgot the story. Maybe TSCM can hook you guys up with what John Landis said. ;) They talked about NL and it was positive, believe it or not. They compared the time they went to NL in 2004 (AH was invited to come to NL before the trial started. I rememeber seeing it and it touched me during that time because it is his house and how great it is and happy those people were.) to NL in 2008. There are changes in how NL looked in 2004 and in 2008. You have to see it to know what I am talking about. Overall, I was sad about it because it is MJ's home, but it is what it is.

Ok, when I went out to get Thriller 25 today (I had a day off from work), I went to CVS and Rite Aid to buy things. Now, as usual, I skim through those ragazines like People, Us Weekly, In Touch and OK. As I was looking at them EVERY issue that I looked at had the pictures of the children! I was like, "DAMN". Let me break it down - People: They showed Prince Michael and Paris Katherine and asked "Where Blanket?" Us Weekly: showed the children and said that (from a source) that Prince Michael "loves to read" and that Paris Katherine "is a true lady". In Touch had a two page article about the children. They had a body expect, get this, that "studied" the pictures of the revealed children and they said that Prince Michael and Paris Katherine looked really happy. Then, the body expert said that Blanket's smile was restaint! WHAT?! LOL! La Toya, according to the magazine, told them some things about the children. Very nice and sweet. They did a little thing on Debbie but y'all know my ass is NOT interested. I didn't bother reading the garbage she says in general, "good" or bad. Anyway, OK magazine (I bought it. I know, I know, I was in a hurry.) pg. 88 and it said (the heading) "It's 10pm: Do you know who these children are?" Then they answered, "We bet you didn't guess they belonged to" and then they said the WJ, you know that nickname they call MJ. Anyway, they were mostly positive. Not trashing the children and not questioning if MJ is the father. You know, like the regular BS that these types of tabloids would do.

BTW, thanks RASTA!! (re: posting the pics from msn.com)

Did you happen to catch Michael Jackson's appearance at Sunday night's Grammy Awards? Yeah, we didn't either. While the rumors were coming on hot and heavy, the reclusive pop legend didn't surface at the show — and that certainly didn't help the ceremony, which could have used some more pizzazz, or the promotional efforts behind the 25th anniversary edition of *****'s landmark album, Thriller.

The LP might be older than you are, but it's pretty rare to see a reissue loaded with as much contemporary appeal as this one. Kanye West, Will.I.Am, Akon and Fergie all contributed in various capacities for the birthday gift, with Chris Brown, Nick Cannon and Imogen Heap all participating in a related 40-episode podcast series called Thrillercast (snag the widget for it right here).
For a release as big as this — oh, and did we mention Thriller is the top-selling album of all time? — it only makes sense that there would be a single to hype it. Well, there is one indeed: a new version of "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' " that features 'Kon, Will and, of course, Mr. Jackson.

"He's a genius," Akon told MTV News last month about working with the icon. "Just to be in the same room [with him], I felt everything I wanted to accomplish in life has been achieved. That aura ... that's how incredible that aura is. We about to shake the world up, man."

Thriller 25 has a few more silver bars too, including a Kanye-produced remix of "Billie Jean"; Will.I.Am's reworkings of "The Girl Is Mine" and "P.Y.T."; Fergie's version of "Beat It"; an outtake from the original Thriller sessions called "For All Time"; "Someone in the Dark"; "Carousel"; and the original "Billie Jean" demo. To boot, there's a DVD encompassing the related Thriller short films, Jackson's Emmy-nominated performance of "Billie Jean" during the "Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever" TV special and more.

Now that's what you call a reissue. As for what else is in store for this week, seeing as how it's almost Valentine's Day and all, we're bringing the 411 to you as a series of couples. After all, we heart having fun in New Releases.

looks like everything is positive for the most part...

Creepy

MJ must be doing something right ;)

Thanks for those reviews and thanks Bee for that rundown of what was said on those shows and what was in the magazines.
