Billie Jean- American Idol

I hate it when others perform MJ songs...I prefer the original and I don't want to change that!
It didn't change much though. It was just slowed down. I didn't like when they called it Ghris Connel's version though. It was almost as if he was getting credit for the song. I hope he doesn't get payed for it.:)

He won't get paid for it, he didn't write it only Michael gets paid for it he wrote it no matter how many people want to call Michael names like molester and pedophile on AI sites and praise Chris those ignorant asswipes don't know Michael is the one getting all of that money. The only money Chris can make is if they download his album and again Michael makes money off of that too since as i have said he wrote BJ so Chris has to pay him too!

David Cook Does Chris Cornell Doing Michael Jackson

by Paul Cashmere - March 26 2008

He performing songs from the year they were born, David Cook chose Michael Jackson's 'Billie Jean' for this week's American Idol but sang the more recent Chris Cornell arrangement of the song.

It is unlikely the judges picked the lift as a Paula, Simon or Randy have probably never been anywhere near anything as musical as Cornell, yet alone Soundgarden.

He also fooled the TV critics. A Baltimore Sun writer said that, "he is definitely making it his own". "It doesn't seem to have much in common with the original," they published. That's because it was the CHRIS CORNELL version you doofus.

Simon was equally fooled. "That was brave. It could have either been insane or amazing," he said in judging. "I have to tell you, it was amazing". Yes Simon, it was amazing because it was the CHRIS CORNELL version you idiot.

American Idol is down to the top 10. Australia's Michael Johns is still in the running.

American Idol: David Cook Introduces a "Billie Jean" Many of Us Didn't Know

Wednesday March 26, 2008

davidcook.jpg
Yes, those were the classic words to Michael Jackson's legendary "Billie Jean" coming out of the mouth of American Idol finalist David Cook as we moved into the battle of the top 10. However, it was a version stripped bare of the original recording's mammoth bass line and glossy production. It was easily the most surprising performance of the night, and, I would expect, it generated a new appreciation for the versatility of the song "Billie Jean."

The inspiration for this Michael Jackson cover? It's a version of "Billie Jean" by Chris Cornell, former leader of grunge legends Soundgarden and currently lead vocalist for Audioslave. His take on "Billie Jean" is featured on the solo album Carry On which was released less than a year ago in June 2007. Critical comments on the Cornell cover of "Billie Jean" ranged widely from those who felt that it was a fascinating way to interpret the song to others who were much less kind. The American Idol judges were amazed and impressed by David Cook's presentation of a performance of "Billie Jean" inspired by Chris Cornell. What do you think? Compare the performances side by side below.

Tom Joyner was just talking about this. Sybil and J Anthony Brown said it was great. It was a bold move. Billie Jean is a classic that has a life of its own with Michael, so for this guy to change it and make it good was a bold move.

What I wanna know is what did Simons say?

Did he say his usual, "that was better than the original" stuff when someone covers a Michael song?
I never heard Simon say this. I heard Paul say it one time. Simon was hard on the guy in the first season when he did PYT. To do a Michael song, you are judge more harsh because many people try to see you in the same way they do Michael. So this guy did good if what everyone is saying is true.

thats one clever dude... rips off a less known version of a BIG song, and everyone thinks he made the original his own.. when in fact he just copied someone else that no-one knows about

yeah i agree. Dave wasn't that special although I think he sung it better than Chris. LOL

its nothing special

he just wants to be like CHRIS CORNELL rather than MICHAEL JACKSON

take a look

I do not know about that. They had to pick a song that came out the year they were born. Billie Jean came out the year this guy was born and that was why he picked it. Michael is been given props at least from what I am hearing just morning. ANd people on one show were pointing out that the other guy sung it that way first so it is not so much a new version but that still does not undermind how good this guy from AI did last night.

I think this version is going to take off in the rock world just like Beat ot is big now too. |Go Michael. What a fantastic song. Is there any song better than Billie Jean?

Thanks, Shannon, for moving my post. :flowers:

I think both Chris Cornell and David Cook do excellent singing
on the rock-style version of Billie Jean.
I think Michael Jackson would approve.

Why do i like Dave's version waaay more than Chris Cornell's?

That was HOT! Loved it! I'd buy it in a SECOND.

Digression: Syesha didn't impress me. Hard to tackle Gladys...and she was no were neaaaarrr close lol And she doesn't have stage presence to me lol

Better than Chris Connel's version. Cook's nailed it. Michael is so nodding with approval.

This's what AI kept me on my toes - to see MJ songs covered well.
American Dance crew has T 25 theme, yet to see it on AI.

I watched 3 versions of Chris Cornell's cover on youtube last night. They were good, but I agree with the opinions that David's was better.

I thought the end note was pretty awesome

THAT note is what made David's cover stand out above Chris'. That's what made his version slightly different. I LOVED that part. I feel like if he was allowed to sing a bit longer he really would have rocked that song out...better than Chris, not to diss Chris, but David's was a bit more exciting. Maybe it was becuz it was shorter. I dunno, but it was awesome to me.

i think someone already metioned in thsi thread he's getting paid he wrote the song!

Absolutely! No matter who sings it, Michael's getting paid and exposure.

I do not know about that. They had to pick a song that came out the year they were born. Billie Jean came out the year this guy was born and that was why he picked it. I completely missed the beginning where they said it was Chris' version. I wasn't watching tv til I heard someone sing the word Billie Jean. That's when I looked up and realized David was singing MJ's song. Somehow I missed hearing Chris' version altho I do remember seeing threads about it. But in comparison, I still feel David's cover had more oomph! With that last note, he took it to a level Chris didn't get to....altho his rock version was impressive as well.

hmmm! ok.. ya I did not know.. Figures.. lol!

I was thinking it was his own rendition.

I saw that performance last night and i gotta say that guys sang it amazingly..and made it his own. Its about time someone sings a song of michaels...I was really happy to watch this...hes been one of my favs from the bunch for a while.

Yeah I saw him singing this last night too, great performance. I hope more people sing Michael songs. :)

the thing about AI is that all Pop radio talks about the show the morning after... so Michael's name was said on every radio station that covers AI performances this morning

I hate it when others perform MJ songs...I prefer the original and I don't want to change that!

me too.......sorry, I think for songs like Billie Jean, nothing will ever be better than the original, and it just feels wrong to listen to others.....my opinion.
I need that base line and hardcore vocals!!!!

Of course nothing compares to the original...
I thought he did a really good job with that version of it.

It'$ ALL GOOD for Michael no matter, especially since it was performed well.

Saw it on youtube, it was good, very good actually, but I'd rather see Mike doing it any day.

AW: Re: Billie Jean- American Idol

Comments from the judges:

Randy: Dawg, check it out! David, I gotta say, I think you are the most original, bold contestant we've ever had. That performance tonight, you might win the whole lot! Hot! Blazing molten hot!

Paula: I'm blown away. I gotta tell you how smart you are. How brave, willing you are to stretch the boundaries.

Simon: David, that was brave. It could have been insane or amazing. It was amazing.
LOL, how was he being original and brave?? He covered Chris Cornell for christ's sake... nothing original or brave about that!

Wow, I should have read on, before commenting! Yeah! Paul is totally right in his comment!

Re: AW: Re: Billie Jean- American Idol

A war has broken out on Utube between the chris Connel fans and the David fans.

David Cook's cover was AWESOME!!! I loved it. I just loved it.

Also, why are some people mentioning that they are glad that David was not trying to sound like MJ? That was never his intention. He was making the song his own and it was great!! Go David. I was hyped when he hit that high note!!!

As for the haters hating on Mike, whatever. Mike is getting paid for the song so that is all that matters. I did not hear Chris Connell's version of "Billie Jean" and I am not planning on to. LOL. David's version was great.

Digression: Syesha didn't impress me. Hard to tackle Gladys...and she was no were neaaaarrr close lol And she doesn't have stage presence to me lol

She was not trying to tackle Gladys. She was trying to make the song her own and her performance was one of the best of the night. I thought her performance was great.

Yeah Syesha was one of the best of the night...but not the best that SHE'S done, certainly. I don't think she delivered that song with enough power...and in general the PERFORMER, stage presence, SOMETHING has been lacking lol Like jordin sparks. She can sing the roof off, but...does nothing for me. She sounds nice but thats about it lol

Chris Cornell's voice is AMAAAAAAAAAAZING!!!...(not the guy singing on American Idol for those who don't know, but the guy who made that version of Billie Jean).

As for David Cook's voice (dude on American idol)? He sounds waaaay too much like Daughtry (from last season or whatever). Yaaaaaaaawn.

I really don't like this interpretation (Chris Cornell's whole composition) of Billie Jean...it's so boring and drawn out.

But props to them both for trying! :D

huh...thats probably why I like David's voice then. Cuz it sounds like Daughtry...I love Daughtry

The arrangement though is interesting. I like the fact that it's BLUES-esque. That's kinda cool.
