Beyonce doesn't have to break any of Madonna's records to be crowned the Queen of Pop. I don't recall Madonna breaking MJ's for example. But if you want to get technical, Beyonce already had more cumulative weeks at #1 than Madonna, more Grammys, she's on her way to have written more #1s than Madonna, and she propelled a group to becoming the biggest selling girl group of all time. Not to mention she's only 27 and she's about to pass Madonna on Forbes in the coming years.
Sales figures and chart statistics are part of the equation when it comes to these things I guess, but they don't prove everything. How much an artist has contributed from an artistic perspective also plays a part - ultimately even the bigger part. There are lots of songs throughout history that were big hits but haven't stood the test of time and on the other hand there have been songs that were only minor hits at the time that nevertheless have entered the collective consciousness. Statistics are for sports, they don't say much about the quality of an artists work. Say, Fabian or Pat Boone used to have many more and much bigger hits than say, Chuck Berry. Yet Chuck Berry's work is now regarded as classic while nobody talks about Fabian or Pat Boone anymore - and if they do it's usually as the punchline to a joke.

Madonna doesn't have singing talent at all!
She will never be asked to sing at the Metropolitan Opera, but she has worked hard and has improved a lot over the years. I agree that she's not a great singer, but her voice is adequate for what she's doing.

Just wondering if anyone will be buying Madonna's "Celebration"- a two disc set spanning her entire career + two new tracks this September??? It's her last album with Warner Brothers before she moves on to Live Nation. I personally am (duh). I love the cover. :)

what a great cover, beautiful,I want this to :wild:

Miss Janet Jackson all the way.

But if you wanna go with commercial success and medial attention.. yes, its Madonna.

But pop for me is just more than singing. It involves dancing too and Madonna is "just a singer". Janet Jackson brought dance to the pop-scene and she made it fun. Her music videos were awesome. Kids danced to her music. Madonna rose to fame being controversial with the help of her music videos (like a prayer/like a virgin), lyrics and stage act.

Janet had fun dance videos. She is the female-version of what Mike were to pop-industry in regards of MUSIC VIDEOS.

I dont have any opinion about Madonna as an artist cuz I dont care for her (dont like, nor dislike her or her music). But one thing.. Im starting to get tired of Madonna. No offence but personally I don't think Madonna could every lay low and just quit making records for a while, at least for no longer than 4 years, and that's why we see her all the friggin time in the media. Madonna has to keep making albums featuring the star of the day just to keep people talking about her (justin, kanye and timbaland). Everyday there's something new about her. I dont like that.. you want that exictment thing. You want to wait for your idols next move, but please, let the wait be longer than four months.

Carole King, Olivia Newton John, Dusty Springfield, Tracy Chapman, Tori Amos, Wilson Phillips, Carly Simon, & many more sang pop and didn't dance or made dance music. Dancing has nothing to do with making & performing music. Going by your logic Ciara must be a better artist than Aretha Franklin because Ciara can dance and Aretha can't.

I changed my mind. Janet for sure!! I dont care...we all have different views.

Why did you even go? You're clearly biased and with an agenda. I'm not even inclined to believe you went at all. I'm not trying to be rude but you brush off Madonna with every single sentiment to leave your mouth/keyboard (lol). Madonna's fans very with age just as Michael's does. They come in many different colors, shapes, and sizes. Both young and old can and do appreciate Madonna. I have been to and watched concerts of Madonna's on Youtube and I can gaurantee you that the crowd isn't boring. Everyone sings along and goes crazy the moment she steps on stage. If you did indeed go and you didn't enjoy it, it was due to the attitude in which you attended the event.

Sure, it's your opinion but I have every right to comment on it. No disrespect.

Wow, wow, wow!
I can't believe your reaction!
First of all, I went to the concert because it's Madonna!! She's 'a legend' it might be the only time she comes to Belgium so I just had to be there!
Second of all, I was not biased! I went to the concert, hoping I'd have a great time, what else would you expect from a Madonna concert?! I'm just saying that it wasn't at all what I expected it to be,... Very few people were dancing and I'm not the type of person who starts dancing on my own. And if I didn't dance at a concert, I can't say I had a great time. She was an hour late and I saw several people leave before the concert was over.... that's just the thruth.

I didn't mean to offend you or Madonna, I still think she's the queen of pop and that why I voted for her in the poll.

If she'd come to Belgium again, maybe I'd go again and hope for a better audience.... Maybe this was just 1 not-so-outstanding concert of her tour:scratch:.

I'm not the only one you know, I searched the internet and came around this thread, http://forums.rockwerchter.be/tm.asp?m=225375&mpage=17 it's all in Dutch but maybe you know someone who you trust who can translate some of the comments for you. There are several people who had the same opinion. She had great mixes of her own classic songs but the audience was just really dull...

It's a shame I always have to defend myself like this on this board:mello:

Um. I think we need to define what makes someone a POP artist.. I dont see any of the ones you mentioned there as a pop artist. Maybe Olivia Newton John.

Personally I have a vision of a pop artist as someone who dances, sings and puts on a great mind-blowing show. Think Michael Jackson :p.. that's my vision of a pop artist.

And I didnt mean that JUST because someones can dance but not sing so well, that makes the person a pop star.

Damn its hard to explain because everyone has their own understanding of what makes someone a pop artist.

Madonna sings, dances, and puts on mind blowing shows. Her concerts are always a spectacle and very dance oriented. Especially her current Sticky & Sweet tour. You may think she can't dance or sing (which is rubbish but to each their own) but no one can deny she does does do those things and often. Just because she doesn't dance like a Jackson doesn't mean she can't dance at all (she received a dance scholarship and is classically trained btw). Enough with the comparisons. Madonna dances like Madonna and her tours have inspired so many other artists (even Janet whose Velvet Rope tour is a carbon copy of Madonna's Girlie Show)). Madonna is the one who really set the precedent for what a concert is supposed to be like when it comes to female entertainers.

It's all good. You don't have to defend yourself. You stated your opinion as did I. No hard feelings.

Pop just means what is "popular" on Top 40 radio, nothing else. Pop can mean anything from Johnny Mathis, Def Leppard, OutKast, Tone Loc, Prince, Madonna, Bee Gees, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Phil Collins, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, Lawrence Welk, Duran Duran, Blondie, Bon Jovi, Debbie Gibson, The Eagles, Donny Osmond, the Lennon Sisters, Simon & Garfunkel, Gloria Estefan, or anybody who is popular in the mainstream. Dancing has nothing to do with it. James Brown sings and dances but he's funk or R&B. Gene Kelly sings and dances but sings show tunes. Jackie Wilson sings and dances but is soul music. New Order, Kraftwerk, Pet Shop Boys, and Depeche Mode make dance music but don't dance themselves. Pink Floyd puts on a big production for their concerts but are a rock band.

Poor Madonna... just does its job and is always so much criticized as Michael has always been criticized for life. She will always be an eternal debate especially if the discussion is Madonna x Michael.

So true! People just can't get enough of talking smack about the both of them, and they probably never will.

Exactly! Madonna gets plenty of **** for her private life as any Madonna fan knows. She's the Queen - period.

Oh trust me, people have talked all kinds of shit about how Madonna has lived her private life. Also... there are MANY people who do not care for Michael's music at all. Of course... now more people do.

From this very topic we can tell that Madonna always generates heated debate. Even adopting children is a huge controversy (and that's a shame).

Janet is my favorite female Artist of all time. However, hands down the Queen of popular music is Madonna. Nobody can argue a fact. She has achieved and influenced every other female pop act around, set the benchmark etc..

:)

Madonna is!
Even though I like Janet more and think that Mariah, Whitney, Christina and Beyonce are better singers than Madde.

If we're going based off of popularity, sales and controversy then Madonna takes the title. But if we're going based off of influence on the industry/pop culture and talent- Janet.

Madonna is a smart lady. She brought upon herself!
As well as MJ! I just don't think he expected it to escalate to where he would become a monster in people's eyes.

The King and Queen of whoring for propaganda

How I love this picture. The two were perfect, beautiful and glamorous. I am imagining the despair of paparazzi to get the best angle of the two, the despair of the press to get them talking. They simply stole the show together that day.:wild::clapping:

Ain't that the truth. Tongues still wag to this day about that historic night.
