I had posted this in the Paul Anka thread, but someone kindly suggested that I start a new thread for increased visibility.

I don't know about you guys, but this morning's headline from the AFP (Agence France presse) really bothers me.

Michael Jackson 'stole' new song tape: songwriter

We MUST take action. I do want to support the estate but I am not willing to give my money to Anka (for insulting Michael and calling him a thief) or to McClain (for insulting MJ's legacy as a songwriter to cover up his own incompetency).

What do you guys think if, instead of buying the "this is it" soundtrack we buy the "number ones" album? (you can gift it to someone, if you already have the CD)

it would accomplish 2 things:

1) it would help #1s remain the best seller in the US (Taylor Swift is trailing MJ by only 86K, and she is re-releasing her album in November. With the re-release, she will definitely outsell MJ before the end of the year and take the #1 seller title for 2009)

2) Paul Anka would not be getting our money. He is getting 50% publishing rights (rightfully so)....but do you really want to give your hard earned cash to that jerk after he called MJ a thief? I don't...I really really don't.

McClain will also receive $$ for finishing the song, and after insulting MJ's legacy, I do not want to honor him by buying this particular song. He should know better...he did not have to belittle MJ to cover his and Branca's mistake. That is UNACCEPTABLE from a co-executor of the estate.

At first, I did give McClain the benefit of the doubt, but it has been 12 hours and that headline on TMZ.COM still hasn't been rectified.

Most fans want to support MJ's estate ...we can still do so without that jerk Anka profiting from it anymore than he should.

We cannot do anything about the song appearing at the end credit of the movie, but the payment is usually a one-time fee to the copyright owner.

Bottom line, Anka thinks he hit the jackpot and that ****es me off. He did not have to go to TMZ to call MJ a thief...MJ is not here to defend himself, but we the fans are.

Let's call for a group boycott of the "this is it" CD...and instead buy "Number ones". We can give the press an advance warning (with the assistance of the Legacy Project), so they don't question fans support for MJ's posthumously released work.

I know we have tons of issues with Sony, but they did not insult MJ's memory in this particular case.

Can we all organize this, together?

Please answer to this post simply with "YAY" to boycott the "this is is" CD and purchase "Number ones" instead....or "NAY", if you disagree with the action call.

I will take a count and I will provide the data to the Legacy Project group if they need to use the information in their press release, or in their communication with the estate & Sony.

thank you

I'm still on the fence with this one - I already have 2 sets of #1's, will most definitely buy another one ....

...but I was looking forward to having the 36 page booklet included in the CD. :(

Maybe we can write/fax John Branca & McClain & tell them to do a better job next time at Branca's office?

Re: contacting Branca...I already brought that to the legacy project.

As for the 36-page booklet, i too was looking forward to getting my hands on it...but the last 12 hours have shown me that i don't need this kind of things at the expense of MJ's legacy.

Are we sure Paul Anka called Michael a "thief"? I haven't read all 30-something pages of the other thread, so I'm not up to date with what's going on. Did he use that term? I mean, the quotes are coming from TMZ after all. I'm not sure I believe it just yet.

too late!!! This Is It is already number 1 everywhere on the Amazon charts

Looks like Anka changed his tune or else TMZ was embelishing

'New' Michael Jackson song mystery resolved, Anka gets share

The Michael Jackson song "This Is It," released Monday, was co-written and recorded in 1983 with singer-songwriter Paul Anka, Anka and the Jackson estate confirmed Monday afternoon. Interest has been running high in "This Is It" -- the song, the two-disc album and the movie.

Jackson's estate and Sony Music Entertainment did not realize this history when they picked the song out of boxes of tapes in their archives, leading to a big surprise Monday when Anka called them, Anka said.

Jackson, who became busy with the success of his "Thriller" album, never finished the duet recording that was intended for Anka's "Walk a Fine Line" album, Anka said.

Latin hip-hop singer Safire recorded and released the song in 1990 -- under the title "I Never Heard," Anka said.

"Somebody just innocently found this tape and did not know somebody recorded it with him," Anka said.

Estate spokesman James Bates acknowledged to CNN that the "song was written with the legendary Paul Anka."
"We picked the song because the lyrics were appropriate given the name Michael gave his tour," Bates said.
It was just a coincidence that the song's first words were the same as Jackson's last planned tour, Anka said.
Monday's release of the lilting love song was part of the promotion for the Sony movie "Michael Jackson's This Is It," which comes out in two weeks.

Anka said it was "an honest mistake" that the estate's special administrators quickly resolved Monday.
"They realized the mistake," Anka said "They apologized and they've given me rightfully what I own. It's 50-50, right down the middle."

Rob Stringer, chairman of Sony's Columbia/Epic Label Group, was quoted in The New York Times on Sunday as saying he did not know the origins of the song.

Anka, who is heard playing piano on the song, said producers did a beautiful job of completing it.
Backing vocals from Jackson's brothers and orchestration were added to the spare voice and piano track recorded 26 years ago in Anka's studio.

The original version, with just Jackson and Anka, will be included in the two-disc soundtrack, along with the orchestral version, Sony said.

The orchestral version will play at the close of the film, which will feature Jackson's career highlights and last rehearsals,

The CD will be released on October 27, coincidental with the debut of the movie.

^^ Well he should have waited before he ran his mouth off to TMZ. He was STILL talking to TMZ even when he was negotiating with the estate. He went on a nice ego trip... eff him.

Not going anywhere near the TII album... this just gives me more reason to boycott it.

Did you watch the video on TMZ?

YES HE SAID MJ STOLE...He specifically SAID Michael STOLE...And that is the word press around the world are using to report this debacle.

Some fans need a chill pill and need to stop forcing fans to not take part in keeping Michael's legacy alive. Cause as a fan, I plan to do just that for the rest of my life.

I plan on buying Michaels song ie the TII Album
Paul Anka is co writer and deserves his cut
just as if Anka released it Mj would have to get half

I like the song (not real happy with the symphony version but its growing on me)
and the Album is supporting MJ's estate _

Too much DRAMA

Hun.. do you think Anka's rants are keeping his legacy alive? Michael is now being labelled as a thief. Anka bragged about the estate kissing his ass, then he bragged that they said his song writing skills are better than Michaels (which I doubt they did). This is who your money's going to.

His legacy is more than just CD sales and topping charts. His name is being dragged through the mud and fans have a right to be outraged.

I don't think anyone's arguing whether or not he's entitled to get his cut. But the way he went about things today was just wrong wrong wrong. He could have just contacted the estate and sorted things out.. he didn't have to insult Michael (and his estate) so publicly.

I'm buying the soundtrack. MJ has brought so much joy and happiness to my life, it's only fair that I do my part to support his estate and his children. I owe him that. Who cares what Paul Anka says? His comments will be forgotten by tomorrow.

I already bought the soundtrack and honestly I want to do my part too in supporting the estate as much as I can for Michael and for his children. As for those who are trying to get money off of Michael..there always has been and there always will be. I believe now that whenever one of MJ's new, unheard singles come out there's going to be someone who says they wrote it or do something to where they get money off of it but if we were to not buy certain MJ items because someone was trying to get money off of it , than geez we'd never be able to buy anything MJ related again.

Whatever is the case, I'm gonna boycott it anyway. There's nothing new in it.

Paul Anka is just a footnote in MJ's epic legacy. If it wasn't for this controversy, Paul Anka's name wouldn't have crossed over to the 21st century.
