After spending close to 30 years in the music industry music and selling more than 100 million albums worldwide Janet Jackson is reportedly done recording albums. According to her former boyfriend, producer Jermaine Dupri, Janet says recording an album just isn't worth the time anymore and plans to focus on her acting career.

"Last time I heard she really didn't want to do an album. She wanted to just do singles every once in a while," Dupri said, mentioning their recent collaboration on the track 'Nothing' for the 'Why Did I Get Married Too?' soundtrack. "She's looked at the marketplace – albums are not really doing what they usually do when you put all this budget out there. Janet is just trying to figure out her landscape."

As far as concentrating on her acting career Dupri says, "Janet's cool. She has a lot of work going on that's keeping her in the right direction. The movie [Why Did I Get Married Too] came out, which is the biggest Tyler Perry movie he has had thus far. It looks like her star power as an actress is still there. And she's about to do another movie, 'For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf' with Mariah Carey, Kerry Washington and Whoopi Goldberg. They will be shooting that in June. And then she's performing at the Essence Festival."

In other news, Janet Jackson has a book due out in the fall titled 'True You' that addresses her struggles with staying fit.

Yeah, albums in general don't sell what they used to, but I'm sure the fact her last albums (even her hits album) have flopped helped make her mind up. If she was still having album success, she wouldn't be considering giving up.

Agreed. Someone said the record companies weren't really interested. She was supposed to go in studio this spring & have a new album released at the same time as her book...but not happening.

She had that deal w/ her 1st label A&M but her greatest hits tanked so badly...added to her last 3 albums sale.

The industry will never be the same...but some record co are still making a profit.

Good she is concentrating on acting...Music died last June 25th.

sad news... im a huge janet fan... but i agree music died when mj left

After Invincible, didnt MJ say on the Get Music Interview that he probably wouldnt do an album again? He said that they don't sell well and that singles are the best bet. (Not quoting him of course.)

But do people buy singles anymore? I didnt think they sold well either. I used to get them when tapes were out, but not anymore.

Homegirl knows what time it is, she certainly can't afford to have ANOTHER flop.

At least she has something to fall back on. Her next move should be to try and carry a film by herself and not be part of an ensemble cast. If Beyonce can carry a film by herself, Janet should be able to do so as well. Even if she has to produce it herself.

Yes. itunes.

We are moving into a "singles" era...just like back in the '50s & '60s.

They don't even release CD singles here in the U.S. anymore like they did in the 90's. I used to like buying those since I'm a big fan of remixes.

She will not release more albums because Janet's albums do not sell. Other artists are still releasing CDs with great success.

I know I'll be attacked here but that's my opinion.

Actually it's something obvious.

well it's a reasonable decision if this is true there is no point in clinging desperately to a (music) career that's no longer existing

She never said she won't be recording an album ever again she just said she's not recording one RIGHT NOW.

I did not say that because of the press. I said it because Janet did not announce a new album and also because of weak sales of her previous work.

Moreover, Janet has announced a movie.

FALSE.
Janet never said this!
She's still going to do music but she's not prepared for an album yet.

This is a lie, Janet hasn't even got an album coming out and yet shes had three songs in the last year (make me, heartbeatlove, Nothing) Janets far from done, acctually I think she wants to come back really big like the Janet of the 90's I would LOVE that

True but some ppl make it somehow. Look at Lady Gaga. Her albums The Fame and The Fame Monster have sold around 10 million combined in two years. I think The Fame sold around 8 million and The Fame Monster around 2 million. Thats massive these days. Thats the numbers you saw in early 2000's.

yeah the fame did great compared to many albums sales nowadays, is lady gaga album the 2nd debut album of all time b/c in book of records whitney houston has the biggest debut album of all time with over 14 million copies

and it you can understand with anyone who don't have the record success like they use to lay low on makin albumbs b/c the record company and the artist are investing a bid invest in making this project and the sales from doesn't exceed on the amount you use to make it

I loved her in the 80s but if she can't do better than the last few flops maybe she should hang it up.

The only reason why her albums have flopped is because her last few albums have all sounded the same and they are all about sex.

Get more creative, Jan!

Yes it been have I mean just to get it striangt, Janet has been 1 of my idols since 10 years old. Thats when I started listen to Janet's music ever since... I don't kown why she can be foucs on acting than her music? maybe she need A 10-year-brake...

It weird because Eminem, Jay Z, and Evanescence came out with albums in the past 2 years, and they sold in the millions. Despite this poor economy and what's going on in music sales. Look at Lady Gaga. Both her albums sold multi platinum as well as Rhianna and Mariah's Emancipation of...album. So I can't really buy that the market is bad and no one buys albums anymore. Itunes and Amazon's MP3 stores are doing very well.

Janet's best of album didn't sell much in the Itunes/amazon stores either. It's the fact that people are not really interested in Janet as a singer anymore. It's just that.

Her acting career is better. Hope she continues that instead.

Are you serious? Janet has sold over 100 million albums worldwide, making her one of the highest selling music artists of all time. Her real success comes from music, not acting, she also loves music too much to stop. She might just be taking a little break to gather new material and come back in a bigger way.

The reason she wasn't sold as much as she used to is partly because her music has been as good and partly because she doesn't promote it a whole bunch like others do. Also, a part of it might be that stupid Super Bowl thing, which really isn't a big deal, especially when you see how female artists today prance around in nothing.

Music is in her blood, she can only stop for so long:)

WHAT???

Do you have idea of the number of appearances she made? The number of magazine covers???

She was everywhere.

Other artists sell a lot more with far fewer appearances.

Which means the music was shite. I used to adore 80's & 90's Janet but it speaks volumes the number of fans that have deserted her.

She'll always go down as one of my favourite artists of all time, but in truth she's done nothing of note in 15 years. And that's a hell of a long time in the music world.

I agree.... Im glad she came to her senses and just stopped making music. All the music shes has made after Velvet Robe has been crap... Janet use to be different and set apart from the rest and now it seems as if shes trying to be like everybody else with conforming with the times... I miss the Rhythm Nation Janet. The Janet that wasnt afraid to be covered up from head to toe and still be sexy and the Janet that song about political issues... Shes making the right move as far as Im concern because more of the crap music will damage her legacy more and she doesnt need that.

Well, I don't really recall seeing her a whole lot, maybe I just missed them. All I know is the artists who are selling more albums than her are the ones who basically just cave in to making an appearance to EVERY television show/event possible, which IMO is not a good thing because it overexposes them, they become boring very quickly. I really do think that's a part of it..There are so many artists, today who make such mediocre music, yet it sells.

She will continue in music, but like I said earlier, she will probably take time to gather great material to sing and come back with a great album.

I hope Janet doesn't quit making albums. But she would have to change the subject matter. Her last three or four albums were full of risque' to somewhat risque' themes and people are tired of it now. This could be a major reason for her slump in sales. She could do a "Rhythm Nation Reloaded" type of album and that could put her back on top of the charts where she belongs. But she'd need to seriously cut back on the bedroom songs.
