Panini America Makes History with Michael Jackson-Worn Memorabilia Trading Cards

They say clothes don’t make the man. But these aren’t just any clothes and this isn’t just any man.
Sometimes, under extraordinary circumstances, clothes do make the man. They make him more collectible, more memorable, and perhaps even more touchable than he’s ever been.

The man in this case is, well, “The Man” – Michael Jackson. As for the history-making clothes, they were worn by the King of Pop himself from 1971 through 1974 during many memorable performances, including “The Flip Wilson Show,” “American Bandstand,” “Soul Train,” and televised specials anchored by such luminaries as Bob Hope and Diana Ross.
Leading trading card manufacturer Panini America purchased the history-soaked pieces of sartorial splendor at auction two years ago — and cut them up.
As a result, Jackson fans and collectors everywhere will have the unique opportunity to own pieces of Jackson when the company’s Official Michael Jackson Trading Card Set hits stores next week.
“We’re thrilled to be able to partner with the Jackson estate in an official capacity to honor Michael’s memory and his legendary career with this truly unique trading card set,” said Panini America CEO Mark Warsop. “We’ve been working diligently for more than two years to bring this set to market, and we’re confident that the inclusion of Jackson-worn memorabilia will make this a product unlike any other we’ve ever produced.”
Below you’ll find a stunning gallery of the Jackson memorabilia cards randomly inserted into the set, along with the corresponding auction description of the respective piece of clothing used.
The Official Michael Jackson Trading Card Set will be available starting next week at Target stores nationwide and at the Panini America Online Store.
See the links after the gallery for additional coverage of this groundbreaking set.

I wonder how much promotion this will get in stores, if any..

There was a lot of hype last year, but after the release date got pushed back by a year it died down. I haven't seen any news articles on this, and only MJ related websites report on this at all now. Anyhoo, I did pre-order a 24 pack box since I wouldn't mind owning a clothing swatch ;)

This date might be for real because my credit card was charged this time and Blowout cards (where I ordered from) no longer has this listed as a pre-sale.

As much as I would like to own a piece of MJ clothing, and this my be the only way I'll ever get it, I just can't help but think it's a pity that somebody deliberately cut up (i.e. destroyed) MJ stage costumes.

Just watched the video of them opening the first box of cards and going throuh some packs. Definitely got me excited lol. Maybe I will give it a shot after all :)..

I've ordered a hobby box and can't wait to receive it!! I'm hoping and praying to find a costume swatch in my hobby box :woohoo: I know it's a small chance, but a girl can dream :cheeky:

For those interested in getting a box,the price is already raised for a box from the pre-sale price on several sites.

Does anyone know what the card dimensions are? Is it the standard 2.5 by 3.5 inches ?

I was just reading this thread. Did I get it right that they cut up some of Michael's stage customs and spreaded them over packages of cards?? If it that is so, then it's sick.

I loved Panini cards as a kid (as any kid growing up in the 80's I think) and had so many collections. If they had them of Michael back then in my country I would have defenitely gotten them.

But now I'm passing the opportunity. Cutting up his clothes for a commercial purpose crosses way to many boundaries for me.

EDIT: I'm not trying to say you shouldn't collect. This is just my feelings. For everyone who is collecting. Have fun!

I agree this is sad...if this is a very successful venture, then it will only encourage others to do the same ie buy up clothing at auction to cut into pieces... I supose the Estate has the veto on this getting out of hand, as they won't want too many people licensed to use Michael's name / likeness, but even so.....there are always unscrupulous people out there.

Does no one else find it extremely disrespectful to CUT UP Michael's old clothes and sell the scraps?

Well, there are different ways of looking at it. I mean I definitely understand what your saying. But almost all of these costumes appear to be from the Jackson 5 era. Not to devalue them or anything, but I think given just how many there were, it's not really that much of a loss. After all, you can't keep every piece of clothing he had, and most of the unique ones are perserved or on display anyway. I think it's a nice gesture for the fans. I mean it's not like they were cutting up his billie jean jacket or his thriller costume or something. Now that would be atrocious. I think they went with pieces that were memorable but not necessarily significant in terms of their cultural value. Just a thought..

I don't agree with these memorabilia cards including original clothing however from the youtube video posted here, they are already made and they must have already been given the rights to the clothing. I just don't understand how that could have happened. The clothing should belong to his children so that they could decide what to do with items that depict his legacy.

By the time these children grow up, there'll be none of Michael's clothing left for them.

Don't you guys think you're over-reacting a bit? Michael had hundreds if not thousands of different costumes and clothing. How many did they cut up, and what was their cultural significance? I'm not defending these corporations because obviously we all know that money is always behind these projects. But from an objective point of view, it's actually not that big of a deal. And they obviously got the estate's approval to do something like this. Plus, Michael's legacy lives on and is well-preserved in his music, his short-films, his concert performances, and many of the iconic costumes he wore. So just because Michael wore something during his 50-year life time doesnt suddenly mean it's sacred. Especially the really old stuff which wasn't really as culturally significant as his other wardrobe pieces.

I don't think some members are over-reacting, there are only so many cards that will have a piece of clothing within them so only a certain few fans will enjoy owning a small piece of clothing that was worn by Michael Jackson. So many more would enjoy viewing a whole piece of clothing..rather than a small section that could possibly not even be identified within the costume. These items of clothing could later have been apart of something much bigger than packets of cards that some people will discard in a few years time.

I find it to be EXTREMELY disrespectful that Michael's clothing is being cut-up! I see nothing really wrong with selling trading cards with Michael's image, and celebrating his different eras. His children are minors now, but in the future, they might have WANTED some of these items for a museum or collection? Not sure if they were even consulted about this? (there is no indication that they were. Were they? In a legal sense, there is nothing they can do about any of these decisions, but I'd sure feel more comfortable about it if I KNEW that they thought it was ok.)

Panini purchased these outfits at auction so I don't have a problem with them doing what they want with them. MJ has thousands of costumes so I don't expect for every single one to be perserved.

YES.It IS disrespectful. But it means we can get close to Michael when so many of us unfortunately never met him.Just my opinion

one of the most ridiculous things ive ever heard. :mello:

I guess I see your point. I just felt that there are so many hundreds of costumes, that using a few of them for this project, wasn't really a big deal. But like you said, if these peices were to have gone up in a museum for example for all the fans to enjoy, I would definitely go with that.

You're absolutely right if you look from a cultural significance point of view. Then these shirts don't mean as much. There's probably way better known J5 memorabilia out there. I look at it more from a respect point of view. They have a beautifull set of cards that lots of fans will want. Panini is a respected company and brand. But then they buy shirts to cut them up. And the only reason is that they know that every fan would like something that has belonged to Michael. So they'll sell more, fans will buy more. And they cash in. If they had put in 1 golden pieces of paper and the person who finds it wins a shirt it would sound different. I still wouldn't agree, but it's better then cutting Michael's things up. I find it all pretty dispicable.

But luckily we can always agree that we disagree :)

I definintely see what you're saying. But at the same time, them making money while making the fans happy, isnt really a bad thing. That's how businesses work. But I definitely agree that it wasn't necessary and that if the estate had put their resources into building a museum that housed all of these memorabilia, it would have been way cooler and more respectul for both Michael and the fans..
