Janet Jackson, Royal Albert Hall, London

A Jackson who's still a real thriller

Watching Janet Jackson play such a prestigious venue, one that conveys a sense of intimacy despite its size, is a pleasure in itself. That she appeared more or less on time brought a welcome change to the usual practice of most A-list artists. Squeezed into a corset-style white suit with heels that constricted her movements somewhat, the 45-year-old Jackson performed classics such as "What Have You Done for Me Lately" and "You Want This" that had the audience on their feet. Despite the presence of a band, she relied on a backing track for the dance numbers to help her through, something a younger Janet would not have needed. Indeed, this tour is very much a look back to her past successes with an accompanying "best of" album. Her dance troupe was limited in size by a stage smaller than those of the many arenas in which she has played in the past. She went off stage briefly, presumably to catch her breath, during which time we were shown video clips of her acting career from Different Strokes when a child to the recent Why Did I Get Married.

When she returned, she sat on a stool to sing a succession of ballads including "Let's Wait Awhile" and "Again", the highlight of the show's first half since her voice was more audible and still in fine form.

After a 20-minute interval, her band played snippets of Jackson hits over a slide show of glossy cover shots, which although stunning, went on too long. However, now dressed in casual jeans, trainers and black vest, she was more like the Janet we know and love, able to dance more freely. She launched into "Escapade" and "That's The Way Love Goes" and the energy levels cranked up a notch.

Inevitably, there was the inclusion of her late brother, Michael, in her set by way of the official video of "Scream", a duet she recorded with him back in 1995 against which she sang her part, disappointingly cut short. The warm atmosphere created by her loyal following was improved further for "Rhythm Nation" and her fans were treated to "Together Again" as an encore that included a touching tribute to Michael by way of a backdrop of childhood images of the pair. Janet Jackson may be past her best but retains that Jackson star quality.

Singer Janet Jackson spoke out about her brother's love for Dublin at last night's Irish concert.

The What Have You Done For Me Lately? songstress played Dublin's Grand Canal Theatre last night, and just before she left the stage thanked the crowd for making her brother Michael Jackson feel so welcome and happy while he visited Ireland.

The 45-year-old sung her way through a string of hits with some impressive dance routines and outfits.

Her encore also included clips of her brother Michael. The Thriller star passed away on the 25th of June 2009.

Michael visited Ireland on several occasions. His sold out concerts in Cork's Páirc Uí Chaoimh in 1988 are still fondly remembered and the country went into Jackson mode when the legend visited the village of Rosemount, Co. Westmeath in 2006.

Speaking to Access Holywood in 2006 Michael said: "Ireland has inspired me to make a great album. I have never given up on making music."

Michael was reportedly spotted house-hunting in Cork.

Janet's next 2 shows are in Monte Carlo I believe, very intimate with just 1,500, both shows have been sold out for some time now.

Her arms kinda look flabby, seems like she's on her way of gaining weight again, kinda feel sorry for her, it seems like she's never able to hold onto a certain weight (like many of us) for too long. But knowing she's the yo yo dieting queen, she'll probably slim down soon afterwards as always

Flabby? Her arms aren't flabby at all, they are defined and muscular if anything like most of the media has observed. Not very noticeable in those pics but she is most definitely not gaining weight at all, she is much smaller than she has been in years, according to her trainer, her 'signature abs' are back and judging from her physique when I saw her I would definitely believe it.

Hey!! Calm down!
Janet looks great for me always and this is her life , her body ;)
She doing amazing music and it should be important to us not how she looks .
I love this pic and videos;)

Well, I'm not sure about that maybe it's the angle in the pics, but that is how they appear to me, which is strange cuz the rest of her body seems to be just right. :dunno:

They do look like they have a bit of meat on there, but I wouldn't call them flabby. I think she looks better with a little bit of meat on them then to be too defined.

Really why? I did hear she didn't use the costumes like she did in London. She was amazing in London though. But my only complaint is the show was quite short.

Yeah show was very short but one of many reasons i didn't enjoy it.

Show was supposed to start at 8...Janet arrived onstage at almost 9

The tribute to Michael was blink and you miss it.Would it have really have been so bad to at least let us hear him sing a few lines? And no Scream dance?

Far too many videos in the show.

This gig was a big deal to her Irish fans as she had never played here before...Janet says during the show it has been 15 years since she toured Europe and even longer since she performed here...Yeah Janet alot longer than 15 years...try never!

All through this gig i had the impression Janet wanted to play her set list as quick as humanely possible. Why so many medleys?

We had to sit through the entire video of Let's Wait A While before Janet came on...40 mins later Janet performs Let's Wait A While...good song...not THAT good!

Alot of the show was mimed and the band played at what sometimes felt like 3 times louder than Janet was singing.

I really wanted to like this more than i did.On the plus side she looked incredible!

She normally does start late, she waits for everyone to get to their seats, at least that's what we were told on the Sunday show when she was late.

I have to agree with the Scream dance, it would have been better if it was included, but I think there was enough of MJ, his whole verse was included.

It's a simple mistake about her performing there, maybe she meant a performance she did in Ireland? Either way I can't see why that would be a big deal.

Again I agree with the medleys, they are put together nicely, but she misses out a lot of the songs.

I think she had a good amount of live singing in the shows along with a backing track, but miming has never been something that's bothered me, when you are a performer who dances a lot.

Anyway, I found a picture of the event Janet will be playing at in Monte Carlo. It is a black tie event which includes a dinner before the show, an odd choice for a concert, but here's the pic:

This tour is about reconnecting with the fans and nothing else. You go to see HER the person perform...your not going for a perfect elaborate show. That's what a lot of people dont seem to understand about this tour. U will never get to see or probably any other major star like her that up close and personal (hence the friggen name if the tour).

Yes it seemed short and blah blah, but she gives u her all when she hits the stage and that's all that matters on the night. Not how long u have to wait for her..why moan about that? Ur there for the night anyway...it's an experience not a trip to the supermarket.

And the flabby comment? I saw her live less then a week ago and she is more beautiful, perfect and healthily proportioned than any picture could ever show.

Dont judge!! Open your mind! Think how michael would have!!

Maybe Britney or Amy winehouse is more up your street. Half Assesed ugly singers who don't even care..
Or maybe beyonce or rihanna warbling away through their mediocre filler album tracks is more your thing.

I would rather camp out side the hall for days, wait hours in the hall for only 2 minutes of Janet Jackson, the legend the icon, the original, rather than sit through a whole dull concert of these others I choose to mention above.

Lol

Funny, you don't seem to care for anyone saying anything negative about Janet but you're all for doing the same to other artists? double standard much?

Yes, Janet has had absolutely no success at all, just because she hasn't met her usual standards, does not mean she has not had success. Even her last tour saw similar numbers big acts like Beyonce was seeing in terms of attendance.

It's always the same with the same people, also @dublinproud, I'm sorry you felt that way.

Guys, take your negativity OUT of here. It's not welcome. If you dislike someone so much, then go punch a pillow or something! Honestly, where do you get off hating on people like that? It's not okay. This is a thread for us who love Janet, not only for her music but for her personality and her struggles. Don't come in here and antagonise for attention.

Whoever commented on Janet's weight, you're entitled to your opinion but it hurts me when people who don't know her write things like that. To me, it's comparable when people comment on Michael's plastic surgery in a negative light. Janet has struggled all her life with her weight, its caused her to go through depression and back several times and if you read her book, she still honestly doesn't think she's attractive in many ways. So I think we should hold our tongues and let her be the weight she wants to be, and to me she's beautiful no matter what. She's had a life long hardship with her weight, the least we can do is support her.

who is belittling Dublinproud? there's nothing wrong with what they said, but what I see as usual is some haters is turing into a negative a belittling Janet for it ( and the persone wasn't even trying to negative)

Yeah the audience does the same for Janet, it proves with her having platinum albums and her yet to have a studio album since control to not be a top 3 debut, she's so forgotten.... Get real, if you're gonna be a hater, you should at least admit to it. Like calling her an old woman, obviously MJ was an 'old man' then if Janet is an old woman at 45.... You're arguments are just childish!

OK. Thread is open again. I don't know why that had to be done. If you cannot stand Janet. then there is no need for you to ceom in a thread about her tour. We already said time and agan to stop coming in a trhead to talk about family member's past actions when it is unrelated.

I am going to give the thread another chance because it is not fair to those who want to have a civilized conversation about her tour to close this thread. It does not mean that you have to like everything about the tour. But at least have something to contribute besides hate. Please.

Thank you! :flowers:

Thank you ginvid, things got way out of hand back there. But it's simple, this is a thread for Janet's tour, if you don't like Janet what reason do you have to come in.

Thank you Ginvid! All we want to do is talk about her tour, which is what the thread title refers to anyway. Just one thread where we can get excited! Haha!
