Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary - Estate Announcement Page 66

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Maybe off-topic however; I always thought the packaging of greatest hits with disc 2 was brilliant. It truly did capture Michael's history up to that time. Without the first disc, the second disc loses context.

It also introduced many people to Michael's work, like me :D

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Given what had occurred however it did feel a little...insecure? Is that the right word? Like controversial new material could only be insured against the blockbusters.

I believe History was always a greatest hits project. I believe it was Michael who decided to include new songs if I am not mistaken.

Michael and his team were planning a greatest hits for 1990 so it's not like the greatest hits happened because of what happened in 1993.

But in the context of the time it did feel a little like that.

I am agreeing History was always to be a greatest hit project. What I am stating is brilliant was the choice to include a full disc of original songs. Disc one is complete with established hits from the artists while disc two delves into the thoughts and feelings of the artist through his art. That shows courage because Michael could have simply added two (or more or less) pop songs about nothing instead of a full disc about his own thoughts and feelings at a particularly trying time.

This ain't about HIStory, I'm hoping something good happens for Off The Wall this year...

I think you've missed my point. But as Zakk points out, we are derailing the thread.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

I thought HIStory was about reclaiming his popularity because of the charges in 93. I have red that this was the reason for doing the greatest hits part.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

must be some sort of announcement fairly soon regarding this?

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

^^ Other MJ albums have been reissued it seems. Good find.

Barbee0715, I believe the Estate attempts their best to not include footage they do not own. I do not know how much of that list you posted they would not own and thus, have to purchase for use. I do not know if Bad25 participated in film festivals. I do know it had a theatrical releases. I do not know why the Bad25 DVD did not include extras (unfortunately). I can only reason the Estate not owning footage.

Is the BAD25 documentary still available for sale? if so, where can I get a copy?

Well, it's my opinion that the Estate should negotiate with outside owners of footage (like all documentarians have to do) to get the best possible footage of the background material possible. And yes, it was screened at film festivals-I followed it and read the reviews as Spike did the rounds.

It's available for streaming through ITunes and you can also purchase it here on DVD and Blue Ray:

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

I wonder if this documentary is going to be released on August as OTW was released August 1979, or if Spike waits until OTW 40 which is 2019, or maybe it is stand alone documentary and not tied to any other releases?

One of my favourite MJ pics. But does anyone know what he's holding?

Chalk holder with chalk inside. Teachers used them so they didn't get chalk all over their fingers. (and clothes)

Honestly everytime i see this picture, I imagine him holding a flip phone (even though they obviously weren't invented for another 20-25 years). Can totally see it making a great ad actually :p

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

What I would like to know is when and why he re-took his cover shot. Was it for the cd version or what??

Oh! Good point. I assumed this was from the original sessions. But his hair is clearly different.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Barbee0715, ChrisC, Michael's hair was not the only change.

Well they never used it for the album artwork so I'm assuming it was just so they had additional material for promotion and stuff?

EDIT: I just realised you might be talking about the 2001 Special Edition artwork, with everyone talking about that photo up there I assumed you were too :p

They probably took it sometime after, because he obviously was no longer rocking the giant fro anymore.
But I dont know where they used the photo or why originally. Maybe it was for a magazine photo shoot or something?

Maybe he wasn't satisfied with the original cover. At the time of the release he probably was but when the album was re-released he didn't like the cover anymore. I don't like the 2001 cover art so I'm glad they are using the original again for this year's re-release.

Off the Wall is the sexiest album of all time
Michael Jackson's early-career release is sure to get you in the groove

In the last 20 years I’ve had more exposure to Michael Jackson as a cultural punchline than as a musician. What some people seem to forget is that before he was a mega star, before he was a smooth criminal, before he was a controversial figure, and before he became a joke, he was simply an amazing musician. My pick for sexiest album of all time looks past all that controversy — even past Thriller. My pick for the sexiest album of all time is Michael Jackson’s 1979 release, Off the Wall.

All things considered, this album is great simply due to its sheer production value and talent. Not only did Jackson have a solid team of musicians backing him on it, he also had none other than famed producer Quincy Jones manning the board. The resulting album is a combination of disco, funk, R&B, soft rock, and jazz that just grooves. Aside from excellent production and musicianship, the songs are well crafted. Jackson sings a selection of numbers written by himself, Stevie Wonder, Rod Temperton, and Paul McCartney.

One standout track is “Girlfriend,” a Paul McCartney-penned slow jam propelled by a bouncy bass and some classic analog synth work from before the days of MIDI. The song is nowhere near as good as any of McCartney’s other post-Beatles work, either as a solo artist or with Wings, but as one of the more mellow tracks, it stands out here.

“It’s the Falling in Love” is probably the hottest “filler” track on the album that didn’t become a hit. This is classic disco, except the song is actually good. No disrespect to Diana Ross, but disco doesn’t have the greatest longevity — I suggest you enjoy it in small doses of well-written pop songs.

Finally, the real work of art here is the album’s sexiest song: “Rock with You.” This track was a massive hit for Michael Jackson, and it stands out as one of the best cuts on the album, rivaled only by “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough.” “Rock with You” regularly appears on the Michael Jackson greatest hits and compilation albums that continue to be released posthumously. I won’t argue that this song is better than “Thriller,” “Bad,” “Beat It,” or any of the other hits that Jackson has enjoyed throughout his career, but this may be one of his best-crafted songs: solid groove, great hook, sexy all around.

The sexiness of this album might not be apparent upon first listen, but the combination of disco and R&B provides the perfect amount of groove for any kind of loving. This is the kind of music that demands you move as you listen.

For bonus points, play this record on vinyl, or better yet eight-track tape, for some really sophisticated romancing. Remember to stretch properly before and after, and always hydrate regularly.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

^^I adamantly agreed with this statement without reading the article first.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

I really wish the Estate would do something regarding Off the Wall. That album very obviously inspired a lot of current artists and it could be introduced to the younger generations.

Me too! I always saw flip phone.

Was way before CDs. I think he did it as his 'image' changed in 1980.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

I remember reading somewhere during the time of the 2001 special editions that MJ wasn't happy with the cover for OTW, so it was changed. I don't know if that's true or not but that's what I read.
