Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary - Estate Announcement Page 66

I usually don't like and don't care for fanmade remixes, but his remixes are really good (not for official release, of course). But that is probably because he's always using unreleased vocals. And leaking of that stuff, even in this remixed form is on the border of illegal and wrong. I'm wondering how he acquired all those multitracks..
I constantly keep saying that but u know what?....im thinking he is from the estate or got fired or something. no way in hell someone has that many multis. I appreciate it though because we may never have heard unreleased vocals etc... I just heard a solo version of state of shock with just Michael's vocals (couldve kept it that way imo) but i love what he does with them but...how on earth as u said does he have so many?!

how on earth as u said does he have so many?!

All multitracks came from infamous Sony hack from 2011. So even if he bought them from the hackers and paid huge amounts of money for them, they are still stolen. That's why I have mixed emotions about these types of leaks.

It's the 'right' font isn't it? They've used that font before, I'm sure. Not proof of course.

No, it's not the font for me. Just the sentences/wording. Writing style of those slogans sound fanmade/cheap/unofficial. Don't know the right word in English how to explain it..

I 4got all about that....but like i said had they not been stolen we may have never heard nor thought they existed. The estate isn't obviously gonna do anything with it. Imo since we aren't getting nothing for otw other than spikes doc. Nick is the only person we look to for "official" release remixes. I say official because they're authentic & we know its his voice & compositions. I doubt he paid alot of money for them. Its not like he's gaining anything from them but l.o.v.e for others who dont have/never heard of parts in the track

A few things are happening here, older generation fans are being overlooked in favour of kids, minimal effort is being made because their seeing out this current contract before they sign a new deal for X amount of years and continue to exploite the artist and his fans. I would imagine when this current 10 (or however many) project deal ends, they'll resign and start selling MJ mugs, toothbrushes, lunch boxes, toilet seat covers, duvet and curtain sets etc. When money is always the prime goal the art and artist suffers. I mean tell me I'm dreaming? A piece of chalk and a plastic wall?? Atleast put all the demos released thus far in there rightful home and include GOTF and ICHI along with Sunset Driver. Put extended versions on there.

And Ive also been trying to buy Bad25 Spike Lee Joint for the best part of 2 years! Why are they advertising something they don't even sell?? Honestly, if they cared any less it wouldn't make much of a difference at this point. Is there even one person in that unorganisation that's a fan of the artist their working for?? Their entire reign thus far brings in to question 'do they care at all about this artists legacy? I'll give them credit for Bad25 and Xscape deluxe edition to a certain degree but overall it's been pretty poor in terms of quality, content and value. But the figures will state otherwise and that's what matters to them above all else.

I own OTW on Vinyl, Cassette, original CD and Special Edition, and now in order to own the documentary I need to buy it again. What's also slightly troubling is that they seem to know their pushing fans way too much with statements like "we understand some fans won't be happy" says it all. And before I'm told to "stop complaining" "calm down" "don't buy it" their not putting a gun to my head" I'm not even upset by their bastardising of MJ anymore, I'm saying all of this in a very relaxed and philosophical mood. It is sad though when I look at my music collection and measure the worlds biggest selling artist next to lesser selling artists and realise how incredibly well those other artists are represented in comparison to how utterly cheaply MJ is represented.

You've just said what I've been saying this whole thread. I agree 100% with you! I get the same flacc for feelin the same way you do. My collection is huge & i have multiple versions of every...EVERY album & song! Why go & buy the album for new pics & a piece of damn chalk...smh. "they dont care about us"!

I didn't know that about John Legend? Wasn't he in Bahrain or wherever with MJ when Tyson Beckford challenged MJ to a dance off? It irritates me sometimes how so many d**chebags got to hang with MJ while people that have never talked smack about him never got to meet the guy.

IF ANYTHING ON BAD25 DOC WAS THAT THOSE NEW PPL ASKING STUPID QUESTIONS, "who was Annie?" etc. ... THAT WAS THE ONLY THING PPL COMPLAINED ABOUT. JUSTIN BEIBER ETC. NOT EVEN BRUNO MARS BUT THE WEEKND?? LEE DANIELS?? KOBE!??? WTF ... FOR OTW!?? SMH

Not that they have much to do with OTW, but Mark Ronson and Kobe Bryant knew MJ on a personal level. Kobe in particular has some pretty cool stories about MJ taking him under his wing as his mentor? And in terms of Lee Daniels and The Weekend, it sounds like they're going to focus on Michael's black historical/cultural significance, which is pretty relevant to the documentary if you're looking at it from outside just the musical side of things?

Yesterday when reading the statement I was perplexed. Today I am mad at the estate for seeing us as dumb individuals who are buying anything they bring out.

To be fair, not that I think we're actually dumb at all, but I can see why the estate would see us that way. There's a poll on the Archives FB right now and you can vote yes or no to buying this product despite how p*ssed people are about it. So far, almost everyone has clicked yes, including people who have left comments saying "I hate the estate blah blah I don't want to buy it blah blah but I will (grudgingly.)" Why? If people don't want to encourage the Estate to s**t all over fan opinions and MJ's name, why buy their product? Download it? Stream it? Trade it? I don't know? I mean, I don't want to encourage people to steal, and I don't want to take anything away from Spike cause I know he probably worked super hard at this and he's done a lot for MJ's Legacy, but if people don't want to keep putting pennies in the Estate's pocket, then just ... well ... don't?

They should hire Nick to do all the remixes. I'm listening to his Don't Stop Til You Get Enough mix & omfg! Idk if he has a lot of multis or what, but man it sounds so good. Should be on this rerelease!

Can you imagine if the estate actually brought a genuine MJ fan on board who knew what he was doing? They'd lose their s**t.

I think the estate is teaching us 'demanding fans' a lesson. They're seriously messing with us.

I laughed when I read the chalk bit. I imagine The estate sees us as big demanding babies, so they figured, "ah f**k, shutup, have some chalk, draw your feelings." Lol. This is why I'm going to Brad's seminar in LA in June. Maybe this whiney baby will even bring my own chalk to get Brad to sign (kidding, kind of :p)

I would imagine when this current 10 (or however many) project deal ends, they'll resign and start selling MJ mugs, toothbrushes, lunch boxes, toilet seat covers, duvet and curtain sets etc.

I just had an image of pulling MJ by the trousers when opening my blinds, having just brushed with MJ, sipping coffee from my MJ mug, packing my sandwich in my MJ lunchbox, and having just had a mor... nevermind ;) For an artist who cared so deeply about being overexposed, it's like the estate took everything he was against and made it their personal mission to do the opposite. I mean, I get it, they are a business and they're here to make money, but geez, have a little integrity for the artist.

In the USA Dangerous was reissued on vinyl in November!

I wish I had known that. I just bought a Greek 91 vinyl pressing for around $50.

No, that's not why you got the "flacc" for...

I actually agree with a lot of things aazzaabb said, so what you said was not the problem on contrary what you claim, but how you said it.

I'm wondering if there is another marketing ploy to this..........perhaps the chalk in each pack comes in different colours so you can collect the set .......................:D

Respect, would love to read your thoughts on this. I think you posted some earlier but would love some more. I know I do this to myself though, I seem to constantly fall into the trap of setting myself up for a truly great release full of demos, unreleased, extended, concerts, original pressings remastered, only to be massively disappointed time and again. I mean these albums changed music and culture yet they get extremely shoddy treatment.

TinnyandOdd, you cracked me up! :D

If it's worth re-releasing far more obscure and far less important and iconic albums than MJ's with quality treatment then I don't know how on Earth it isn't worth to put a bit more effort into re-releasing Off The Wall, even if it isn't expected to sell a lot. I doubt McCartney's Pipes of Peace re-release was a huge seller, but they still gave it a respectful treatment. Off The Wall is a so much more important album in pop music history. It's not a chalk that it deserves as "bonus material". That thing is so ridiculous that it's almost insulting IMO. As if they think MJ fans are infantile teen boppers or something. Unless we misunderstand something about this whole chalk thing. LOL.

And it shouldn't even be expensive. I mean throwing all the existing demos (including the formerly unreleased ones like ICHI and GOTF) on a CD doesn't take much, you don't have to pay some producer to remix them, but it would make the whole thing look so much better.

Well, I just did.

I want that GOTF demo so bad. :p It would have been a good opportunity for us to get it. A pity we won't.

MJ’s memory will live on forever. @MichaelJackson’s ‘Off The Wall’ album will be reissued. http://trib.al/TTbWaeC

Re releasing re releasing so what ? just release the documentary if there is no unreleased tracks

You guys are funny  I can see people being disappointed about the lack of new material attached to this project. There was also talk at some point of how different things would be if Michael were here now. I don't think it would have made much of a difference really since folks weren't too pleased about the numerous album colors, re-issues and greatest hits packages even before 2009. And that is quite reasonable and fair an observation to be made. There is little point, other than the thirst for profit, to make people spend their hard-earned money on the same product over and over again.

Returning to the OTW release - I trust Spike's documentary will ease some of the fears people have and I hope projects in the future will please both new fans and the "old guard" (if y'all pardon the expression and don't find it offensive). Expecting to please everyone is of course nothing short of lunacy. Constructive criticism is always useful for anyone and I hope the Estate will take note. It was after all one of Michael's major purposes in life to make happy as many people as possible.

Oh, and Tinny - I already have a MJ mug, a preview of a special edition; it'll soon hit the stores worldwide as well. Oh wait, that's only Papa Smurf :p

Sorry for the silly sense of humor everyone. *ducks out of thread*

For me its easy, torrent the doc, watch then delete - Job done........ I now have no interest in anything post Michael, why I hear you say, well for one very huge reason - he is not here to be involved in it, never will a bunch of suits and lawyers replace or even try to transcend the talent Michael possessed when giving us and the world his master pieces.

I'm not gonna bother with it at all...not even gonna download it. I have zero interest in documentaries

Truth, the doc isn't gonna make any money at all. These releases are going back downhill.

I agree-I was thinking about all those Invincible covers and the Ultimate Album that had demos I'd die for, but I owned every other single song already many times over. I do realize they have to make their money back at least but it seems like there could be a better way.

And I rather like "old guard" instead of just "old". LOL.

Where is this Facebook Archive site-I'll say no-and why-I desperately want to own the doc, but I don't want to buy my 5th copy of "Off the Wall" to do it. I've already left 2 messages on Spike's facebook and on the MichaelJackson.com site begging them to put the physical copy of BAD 25 back on sale.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

 Looks like he dodged a bullet (girlfriend from hell)...
Sheila-go over to the "rare pictures" thread-the rest of the set is posted there-and Michael is looking properly "broken up" with-LOL-it looks like foreshadowing of "She's Out of My Life."

The Triumph Tour was performed by the brothers as a whole but a great number of songs performed were from OTW, featuring every song that reached the top 10 on the charts

but there may be another reason why we may never get to see that footage

Indeed. Triumph supported OTW as Victory supported Thriller. I can only think of one reason we may never see the footage and it is not particularly acceptable in my view.

MJ doesn't have anything anymore. And it is his fault that all this is happening. As he said multiple times he wasn't well organised in that way. His archiving sucked! He obviously didn't care that much about all that material because he probably thought that it had no true value. Don't forget about his "friends" and family holding much unreleased material. It really isn't that much of Estate's fault.

Bad 25 came out with 6 unreleased demos + unreleased version of IJCSLY. And it flopped. Xscape with just 2 more tracks was a worldwide success.

???

It is the Estate's responsibility to archive Michael's work, not Michael. Bad25 failed because of packaging agreed upon by Estate/Sony among other poor decisions made by Estate/Sony for the Bad25 project. Xscape succeeded because it seems Estate/Sony learned from those poor decisions. Unfortunately, Estate/Sony are doomed to repeat their errors with this lazy effort for the OTW project. If it was not for Lee's documentary, absolutely nothing would have been done to laud OTW as it should be lauded.

It is illogical that Jones would attempt to prevent anything MJ related as they share a musical legacy.

It is illogical that any Jackson brother would attempt to prevent anything MJ related as they share a musical legacy and blood.

The executors do not share a musical legacy with Michael and one in particular has a distaste for members of the Jackson family. Maybe both have a distaste for Jones who may very well be successful in his lawsuit.

When this contract is over, they'll sign a new one. Nothing will change.

Unfortunately, you are most likely correct. I personally would have no issue if Estate/Sony did not release another dreadful product from their partnership. My desire for the release of Michael's art in a quality format outweighs all of this which allows for what may be considered foolish hope and foolhardy posthumous purchases.
