Rolling Stones are a DISGRACE!!!

In her heyday, I could see her pulling that off. I guess you’re mostly thinking about the ad libs? Those are very much gospel, after all, with the call and respond choir (which, by the way, are The Andraé Crouch Choir!), and Aretha lived and breathed gospel.
Even in her later years she subbed for Pavarotti at the last minute, when he became sick. Aretha has recorded gospel, jazz, soul, funk, rock, disco, New Jack Swing, showtunes, house music, adult contemporary, etc. and even hip hop influenced songs with Lauryn Hill & André 3000. Aretha began in gospel because her father was a well known preacher named C.L. Franklin. He had some sermon records too. My grandmother had some of his albums & singles. On the singles he was singing, instead of preaching

Could Aretha sing Earth Song?
Sure she can.

Amen to this! :)

@zinniabooklover @DuranDuran I have just added "sparkle to my list, Aretha Franklin album written and produced by Curtis Mayfield.

@BuffaloBill87 aweome video! Such high quality image, makes me mad that MJ doesn't have the same. Awesome versions as well, I take it the full concerts can be found on YouTube? I think I've seen parts of that 68 comeback special on BBC once. Cool set up as well!

@BuffaloBill87 you seem to have some knowledge about Elvis music. Is there anything in particular you would recommend? He made so many recordings I don’t know where to start. I’m obviously very familiar with his dozens of hits.
In terms of performances, I would definitely recommend the 68’ special. It is fantastic. The That’s The Way It Is documentary also contains some wonderful stuff.

In terms of albums: Elvis Presley, Elvis, How Great Thou Art and From Elvis In Memphis.

Ok, I got completely lost in some partly related search and made a brain spaghetti, but you know, all the roads lead to something Michaeel-Jackson-related (I know a forum where all the roads used to lead to Invincible... well that's a little hardcore...).
😲

Talking of Strummer and Brel, I thought of the cover of My Legionnaire by Édith Piaf by the Clash. Well, no by the Clash but it's on Ellen Foley's album Spirit Of St. Louis. Clash members wrote and played almost all the songs on the album (including casual Clash violonist Tymon Dogg). Ellen Foley also sings Hitsville UK on the Clash Sandinista! album, which is a "Motown inspired" tune. So in a sense, I see Spirit Of St. Louis as an extension to Sandinita! *. Ellen Foley was Mick Jones girlfriend back then. He wrote Should I Stay Or Should I Go? after their relationship.
Yes! All of this is ringing various bells in my head. Not real strong bc I was never hugely into The Clash. Certainly by Sandinista I was off the radar.

Ellen Foley is also famous for being one of Meat Loaf's vocalists ( Paradise By The Dashboard Light , album version ). I thought that she had done more with him but I'm not sure. And just because I like to link random stuff right now, yesterday after checking the Foo Fighter (previously talked about in this thread), I checked Jimmy Ruffin
Jimmy Ruffin - ❤️

who also in my artists-to-check list and I need something lighter in my ears... and I thought... that guy sounds like he could be an influence to Meat Loaf (just an hypothesis)... Talking about Meaf Loaf, it's also the same guy who did the Bat Out Hell II and The Very Best Of Meat Loaf and the Jacksons Victory cover (and also a bunch of metal covers including 4 from Sepultura).
I actually made a search on Foley after thinking of My Legionnaire because I had a vague memory that she was related to one of the Jackson brothers... Not sure at all, may be wrong... She was actually on an album by Joe Jackson
Gah! Never liked Joe Jackson.

(NOT the Jacksons' father but the singer) which only makes such a search more difficult.

What I stumbled uponthen is that she has a version of Nightline/Nite Line on her album Another Breath (1983) : https://mljs.evilnickname.org/ellenfoley/nightline.html

So according to this page and to Discogs, there was not 1 version of Nite Line released by another artist in 1983 but actually 3:
- Randy Crawford (the one people usually refer to)
Just checked out Randy's 'Nightline'. Was never that into her although she has a great voice. Just not madly interesting to me at the time. Anyway, checked the personnel for the song:

David Williams - guitar
Nathan East - bass
Steve Lukather - rhythm guitar

You probably knew all of this but it was new to me. Blew me away!

Also, really enjoyed the song. Very happy!

So defending Michael as being the King of Pop is (rightfully, obviously) expected, but slandering Queen of Soul Aretha and calling her "overrated" is perfectly fine? 🤔

I know this is a Michael Jackson fan forum, and not an Aretha Franklin one, but come now, we gotta respect the fellow Motown greats always. And of course she could've pulled off Earth Song if she wanted to, what an odd, nonsensical question.

I know tastes are subjective, not the point. My point is that Aretha is the Queen of Soul, just as much as Michael is the King of Pop. No contest, no question.

That was me 🙂

Yes her voice was overrated in my opinion, not someone who I would regard as the GOAT.

I'm not saying her voice wasn't good, it was great for that matter but I do think there have been better singers.

In terms of overall star quality, music , entertainment, performances etc MJ blows her out of the water.

Just about any artist can sing any song. Lyrics are just poems set to music. A singer doesn't have to do a clone of another version of a song, they can do something different to it. Listen to the original I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor, then listen to the 1996 remake by Chantay Savage. It doesn't even sound like the same song. The salsa version (Yo Viviré) by Celia Cruz is different too. The Chris Cornell Billie Jean has a different arrangement, but the Phil Collins You Can't Hurry Love is an exact replica of The Supremes' version. On Youtube there are singers & bands doing opera style, metal, country, etc. versions of Cardi B songs. :) Plus there is the band Postmodern Jukebox who do covers of hits in different old styles, usually in a 1940s swing jazz style.

I can’t believe they also left out Steve Perry from Journey. Steve has one of the most beautiful voices in all of rock history imo. I even rate Steve Perry higher than Freddie Mercury and I adore Freddie.

Branca did a Tik Tik on this. He really said “I’m gonna destroy everybody who is hateful or negative towards Michael”…first the AMA’s now Rolling Stone. Lol.

Aretha never was on Motown. But that’s beside your point, which I wholeheartedly agree with! Respect.
Pffff man, what a brainfart on my part. 🤣 I clearly don't know my music history! I really should've known better than that. Goodness LOL. I should stop assuming "soul = Motown"... for real. Please forgive me about that, I'm actually legit a bit embarrassed. 😳😬 Glad you agree regardless though!!

Stax, Atlantic, King, Philadelphia ...

Aretha was with Columbia for a while.

Mm, you've broken my Elvis moment. I want to go and immerse myself in all of this ... so much gorgeousness ... :)

Thankfully I now know you're way too nice to slam me on the head with a chair, lol. I guess now we're equal with our "silly moments", too.😅🤣

The title of this thread should be changed to "Rolling Stone (no 's') IS a DISGRACE!!!" I thought members of the band were saying things about Michael. The magazine 'Rolling Stone' is singular. There is no 's'.
That would not surprise me either if that ever happens. The state of shock sessions with Jagger were quite cold between the two or so I have heard.

Elvis had it all especially the looks but his voice was stunning, so powerful at times.

Freddie amazing too, can't believe he never made the top 10.

The whole list is a joke.
Agree with everything.
Elvis should be much higher…obviously Michael as well.
And Bob Dylan in top 20,come on…he is/was a great songwriter but the man cant sing.
Regarding Elvis, maybe the jury also listened to some of the poor 60s movie songs or live 1977 ones…its the only way to explain the 17th place.
The list is indeed a joke.

Yeah i’m a big Dylan fan but to have him in a list about vocalists doesn’t feel right. He can sell a song especially in the 60s it was great but no he doesn’t belong in there.

They wrote in the ranking description that it's not all about the voice but about overall fame, influence, legacy, talent etc. So the title is misleading and the criteria are very hazy.

So yes, I think Bob Dylan belongs in there.
