Even in her later years she subbed for Pavarotti at the last minute, when he became sick. Aretha has recorded gospel, jazz, soul, funk, rock, disco, New Jack Swing, showtunes, house music, adult contemporary, etc. and even hip hop influenced songs with Lauryn Hill & André 3000. Aretha began in gospel because her father was a well known preacher named C.L. Franklin. He had some sermon records too. My grandmother had some of his albums & singles. On the singles he was singing, instead of preaching

@BuffaloBill87 aweome video! Such high quality image, makes me mad that MJ doesn't have the same. Awesome versions as well, I take it the full concerts can be found on YouTube? I think I've seen parts of that 68 comeback special on BBC once. Cool set up as well!

In terms of performances, I would definitely recommend the 68’ special. It is fantastic. The That’s The Way It Is documentary also contains some wonderful stuff.

In terms of albums: Elvis Presley, Elvis, How Great Thou Art and From Elvis In Memphis.

Yes! All of this is ringing various bells in my head. Not real strong bc I was never hugely into The Clash. Certainly by Sandinista I was off the radar.

Just checked out Randy's 'Nightline'. Was never that into her although she has a great voice. Just not madly interesting to me at the time. Anyway, checked the personnel for the song:

David Williams - guitar
Nathan East - bass
Steve Lukather - rhythm guitar

You probably knew all of this but it was new to me. Blew me away!

Also, really enjoyed the song. Very happy!

So defending Michael as being the King of Pop is (rightfully, obviously) expected, but slandering Queen of Soul Aretha and calling her "overrated" is perfectly fine? 🤔

I know this is a Michael Jackson fan forum, and not an Aretha Franklin one, but come now, we gotta respect the fellow Motown greats always. And of course she could've pulled off Earth Song if she wanted to, what an odd, nonsensical question.

I know tastes are subjective, not the point. My point is that Aretha is the Queen of Soul, just as much as Michael is the King of Pop. No contest, no question.

That was me 🙂

Yes her voice was overrated in my opinion, not someone who I would regard as the GOAT.

I'm not saying her voice wasn't good, it was great for that matter but I do think there have been better singers.

In terms of overall star quality, music , entertainment, performances etc MJ blows her out of the water.

Just about any artist can sing any song. Lyrics are just poems set to music. A singer doesn't have to do a clone of another version of a song, they can do something different to it. Listen to the original I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor, then listen to the 1996 remake by Chantay Savage. It doesn't even sound like the same song. The salsa version (Yo Viviré) by Celia Cruz is different too. The Chris Cornell Billie Jean has a different arrangement, but the Phil Collins You Can't Hurry Love is an exact replica of The Supremes' version. On Youtube there are singers & bands doing opera style, metal, country, etc. versions of Cardi B songs. :) Plus there is the band Postmodern Jukebox who do covers of hits in different old styles, usually in a 1940s swing jazz style.
 
I can’t believe they also left out Steve Perry from Journey. Steve has one of the most beautiful voices in all of rock history imo. I even rate Steve Perry higher than Freddie Mercury and I adore Freddie.
 
Branca did a Tik Tik on this. He really said “I’m gonna destroy everybody who is hateful or negative towards Michael”…first the AMA’s now Rolling Stone. Lol.

Elvis should be much higher…obviously Michael as well.
And Bob Dylan in top 20,come on…he is/was a great songwriter but the man cant sing.
Regarding Elvis,maybe the jury also listened to some of the poor 60s movie songs or live 1977 ones…its the only way to explain the 17th place.
The list is indeed a joke.
 
Yeah i’m a big Dylan fan but to have him in a list about vocalists doesn’t feel right. He can sell a song especially in the 60s it was great but no he doesn’t belong in there.
