The Discussion of MJ's Unreleased Tracks

If I were to guess, I'd say he has a handful of unreleased material.....More than 5 but less than 10 including finished and unfinished.
Of course I would love to hear them, but not holding my breath thinking they are anything great.

If that was official, it would be on every major website.

I would also be in tears.
I agree. But there isnt an album worth of album quality songs unfortunately. There are a lot of songs but non are hit potential level. Chicago 1945 is a perfect example, it’s a decent song, but I can’t see it being a hit.

We haven't even heard Buffalo Bill yet, and you say this?

I see that mindset. But three important things to remember:

1. We don’t know what’s left. It seems like every year we find out about another song title, or learn that a long-discussed song has more vocals than we once thought (e.g., “Tomboy,” “Make or Break”).
2. We don’t know what’s a hit and what isn’t. I remember thinking that “Love Never Felt So Good” as the lead single was the dumbest possible idea (based on the demo) and that the remix of “A Place With No Name” would explode on the charts. I was wrong on both counts.
3. Hits aren’t the only consideration. Of course the estate needs to focus on commercial return, but personally, I’m here for the music. I don’t need charts (though I’d love to see it), I just wanna jam.

Obviously this is all speculation, but there’s no consistency among MJ’s collaborators regarding how much material is left. Until we get a final answer, I’m keeping the faith.

(I truly did not mean to make two Dangerous puns while typing this, please don’t yell at me)

That’s fair. My only hope for an album would be the 80s material. I could see an album like this:

Producers:
Brody Brown
Mark Ronson
Max Martin

*solo version
  1. Eaten Alive*
  2. Buffalo Bill
  3. Make or Break
  4. Throwing Your Life Away
  5. Joy
  6. Tomboy
  7. Hot Street
  8. Turning Me Off
  9. Chicago 1945
  10. Dream Away
We will have to see what the estate ends up doing. The best possible time to release an album would be early 2026 right after the biopic comes out and MJ fever is at a peak.

If I'm not mistaken, Prince said that they were looking through the vault while putting the biopic together. If there’s not an accompanying album of new music (which I doubt), I think we’ll get at least one new track.

My best guess is he was talking about music for the soundtrack, not a studio album. The only unreleased material I can see working for the biopic are Neverland Landing and Make a Wish for the Neverland scenes.

Good songs but I’ll pass on those producers. We need people who worked WITH Michael on projects. Yes, his core team is no longer with us (Quincy, Rod, John and Bruce) but we still have Matt, Brad, Brad, Greg and Michael that can assist with production as they know him best

Well knowing the estate they will get new contemporary producers, so I listed the 3 I’d choose.

Of course because they’re not willing to work with his collaborators so they’ll go to people they know they can low ball instead of the people that’s holding on to the music.

So it was confirmed that „Tomboy“ and „Make or Break“ are in a releasable state? No demo/mumbling vocals?

Lovin' You and Who Do You Know weren't "hits", yet I enjoy these songs and listen to them quite a bit.

As far as Tomboy, I didn't make it and was not fully completed. - John Barnes

Make or Break was a song written by Michael and myself. It was never fully finished. There was a demo incomplete vocal. There is a partial lyric as well. It was the third piece of music I created using the Synclavier. I like its potential as a song. - John Barnes

I actually thought Timbaland did well with the songs he worked on.
It's not a rare project for sure. It's very much at the forefront of MJs catalogue; gets plays, accrues stats and charts for MJ. AllMusic.com has it as one of his "best" albums, a little anecdote there, along with Off The Wall through Dangerous and Ben. So it, just does the job music is supposed to; be heard.

Joe Vogel has heard them both and stated that they both have full vocals. It’s possible that John was either mistaken or (more likely) that “not fully completed/incomplete” just means “we didn’t finish the music.”

I think they have different definitions of full vocals.

Full vocals for Joe might mean mumbles throughout the song with no empty spaces but since John Barnes personally worked on the song, I’d take his word before Joe.

Joe has always been very specific when discussing vocal completion. He only says “full vocals” when the song has everything it needs. Not saying John is mistaken, but him saying “Tomboy” wasn’t finished and that “Make or Break” had an incomplete demo vocal (in my opinion) is more open to interpretation than Joe’s comments.

Make or Break is probably my most wanted unreleased track, 1985 dance track with full vocals that has been praised by multiple people and John Barnes himself said MJ wished he put it on bad. Hope to hear it one day
