Michael Jackson News:

Michael Jackson
Thriller

[25th Anniversary Edition]

(Epic/Legacy)
First Appeared in The Music Box, March 2008, Volume 15, #3
Written by John Metzger
Sun March 30, 2008, 12:45 PM CDT

Twenty-five years after it was issued, Michael Jackson’s Thriller has become even more difficult to assess. By dangling babies over railings, putting himself in the position of being accused of child molestation — a charge that, incidentally, never was proven — and routinely altering his facial appearance, Jackson, of course, hardly has helped his cause. Although individuals certainly have every right to decide for themselves whether or not to purchase his albums and contribute further to his bank account, it is important for critics to separate Jackson’s actions from his art. If it is heard with a clear head, Thriller not only remains a certifiable classic but it also has retained both its charm and its relevance.
There’s no denying the fact that Thriller was an immediate phenomenon in popular culture. It truly did not matter whether or not one was a fan of Jackson’s post-disco dance grooves. In 1982 — as well as the years that followed — his songs weren’t just impossible to avoid, they also were impossible to resist. Even the debut of his videos turned into events that — like The Beatles’ appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show — were not to be missed. There are only three outings in music history that succeeded in placing seven tracks in Billboard’s Top 10, and Thriller came first. It’s no wonder, then, that the set continues to have the distinction of being the best-selling album of all time.

Nevertheless, listening to Thriller today is an odd experience, especially for those who weren’t necessarily fans of Jackson’s solo work but nonetheless lived through his kingly reign over the pop charts. On the one hand, the music is stuck in time, forever tied to an era from long ago, so much so that Jackson’s Human Nature sounds like the entire impetus for Howard Jones’ solo career. Simultaneously, though, the songs themselves feel strangely contemporary. Although different beats and textures have been applied to the hit singles that have emerged since 1982, pop music itself — particularly the dance-friendly kind — hasn’t really evolved, at least not in ways that are nearly as appealing and compelling as Thriller.
Consider this: With Thriller, Jackson resurrected disco by making an album that brought together a cast that included Paul McCartney, Eddie Van Halen, actor Vincent Price, members of Toto, and producer Quincy Jones. In spite of its seemingly hodgepodge construction, the resulting effort actually felt cohesive and complete. By delving into gang warfare (Beat It) and commenting on a then-recent paternity suit against him (Billie Jean), Jackson dealt with big issues, too, which is something pop music frequently has struggled to accomplish in a meaningful fashion. In tying unshakeable melodies to thumping bass lines (Wanna Be Startin’ Something) and a writhing electric guitar lead (Beat It), Jackson turned Thriller into an album that was universally acceptable, yet also phenomenally good. He even dared to slip an ode to The Beatles into the title tune as well as to highlight it by having Paul McCartney sing with him on the preceding track The Girl Is Mine.
In the wake of Thriller’s enormous success, everyone from Justin Timberlake to Britney Spears to Usher has attempted to put their own stamp upon Jackson’s work, but the results — even those by Jackson himself — largely have sounded like carbon-copy clones or, worse, as if they had been manufactured from synthetic components. Therefore, it ought not to be a surprise that the well-meaning remakes of the album’s songs by contemporary artists such as Fergie and Kanye West — which are tacked onto the conclusion of the 25th anniversary edition of Thriller — fail miserably. Akon, at least, had the wisdom to alter the flow of Wanna Be Startin’ Something, but his version still pales in comparison to the original. This, of course, is an illuminating statement about what Jackson achieved as well as about the decline of pop music in general.
As an added bonus, the newly minted version of Thriller also compiles the short films that Jackson made for Beat It, Billie Jean, and the title track. Wonderfully conceived and expertly choreographed, they continue to provide insight into Jackson’s showmanship, though it’s equally true that they haven’t aged nearly as well as the music itself. In the end, Thriller might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but even those who hate the sounds that typically emanate from nightclubs have to admit that Jackson left a very big imprint upon popular culture, one that has proven to be rather difficult — if not impossible — to recreate, let alone supplant.

Gordon Ramsay won the best TV show prize for ``Kitchen Nightmares'' in the Observer Food Monthly awards despite provoking criticism in the Australian parliament because of the amount of swearing it contains.
Times are tough for restaurants on both sides of the Atlantic if the latest Waiter Rant is anything to go by.
Kitchen Rat revealed the whereabouts of pop superstar Michael Jackson last summer, which was in a UK hotel closer to home than you might think.
And Silverbrow on Food got all protective of Gordon Ramsay Holdings chef Marcus Wareing.

Funky summer ahead Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Nicks coming to zoo

By RYAN E. SMITH
BLADE STAFF WRITER

Next up will be Weird Al Yankovic on July 6. He has ruled the world of song parodies since his first LP in the early '80s, mocking everything from rap to rock. Some of the two-time Grammy winner's more notable efforts include "Eat It," a send-up of Michael Jackson's smash, "Beat It," and more recently, "White & Nerdy," inspired by Chamillionaire's "Ridin'•"

AXEMAN IS HOPPIN' MAD

HE’S celebrated for his rock ’n’ roll antics but Slash is also partial to a wee bit of hip-hop.

The leather-clad strummer even collaborated with rapper Snoop Dogg, 36, recently.

Slash explained: “I played a show with Snoop which was so cool, a real treat. We also hooked up with the Black Eyed Peas.

“A lot of people wouldn’t expect me to play guitar with those guys but there’s something about the rhythms in pop and rap music that is really fun to play with.”

Slash also provided Michael Jackson, 49, with a few solos over the years but he’s ruled out any more ***** guest spots – for now.

He added: “I was with Will.i.am, who remixed Thriller recently but he said Michael wasn’t recording any new material soon."

'80s dance transports crowd to decade of excess'

I half expected the dance to be mobbed with over-enthused high school students and deadbeat 30-somethings desperate to relive "the glory days" of their youths. I was partially correct in my assumption but also surprised by the number of UNC students present.

"If I could have grown up during the '80s just by wishing it, I'd be there faster than you could peg your jeans," said East Chapel Hill High School student Annie Cate.

The dancing was far different than what one would see at any club today. The crowd was bopping, jumping, break dancing and moonwalking to everything the DJs spun.

Michael Jackson songs were some of the most requested. Either he was the best artist of the decade, or everyone wanted to act like zombies and choreograph their own slightly intoxicated versions of "Thriller."

Though some of the night's songs wouldn't be found on a "Totally Awesome '80s!" compilation, the DJs spun a mix most everyone seemed to sing along to.

Jams from Blondie, Cyndi Lauper, Rick Springfield and The Police were more favorites.

"I'm not just here because of the hot college girls," said Scott Morris, a Chapel Hill High School student. "I've grown up listening to '80s music because of my parents."

But the dance wasn't only about the music. It was also about the culture of the '80s.

Michael Jackson HIStory:

1983 - Michael Jackson's "Beat It" short film premiered on MTV.

1994 - Smith-Hemion Productions filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court against the Jackson 5 for misrepresenting their ability to draw a crowd and therefore breached their contract.

2004 - It was announced that Michael Jackson was promoting the idea of staging a concert tour in Africa to help raise money to fight AIDS. At the time a California court still had possession of his passport due to child molestation charges against him in that state. Jackson met with the members of the Congressional Black Caucus and was present at a new conference announcing his potential involvement in a tour of Africa.

Millar mulling 'Moonwalk'

After receiving a quick lesson and some serious prompting from former center fielder Corey Patterson, Orioles first baseman Kevin Millar broke into Ray Lewis' pre-game dance during last year's introductions before the home opener -- though it wasn't an exact duplicate of the routine made famous by the Ravens' linebacker.

So what does he have in store for fans today?

"I'm going to have to either repeat that dance, maybe fine-tune it, maybe have him help me if he's in town, or maybe do like a 'Moonwalk,' maybe a Michael Jackson-type thing," Millar said. "We'll see what happens. I'll have something for you guys."

Students groove for a cause

By Meghan Michael

The sounds of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and Britney Spears's "Hit Me Baby One More Time" could be heard through Lower Campus as they drifted out the doors of the Flynn Recreation Complex on Saturday. Inside, volunteers danced the day and night away in the sixth annual Dance Marathon, which raised money to support the Franciscan Hospital for Children.

Tradition takes stage at ODU as step teams stomp it up

By Kristin Davis
The Virginian-Pilot
© March 31, 2008
NORFOLK
Deidre Cooperwood was exhausted when it was all over, but exhilarated, too, because the crowd did what she hoped it would do.
They reacted.
They shouted and clapped and lifted their arms. They let out a cheer when Cooperwood and the six other women on her team plucked off their hats and tossed them, and when they pulled glitter out of their pockets and let it float to the stage.
The response, Cooperwood said, is the best part of stepping. That, and watching an initial idea evolve into a dramatic performance.
Cooperwood's team was one of six that performed at Old Dominion University on Sunday in the first stop on the Boost Mobile Stomping on the Yard national step show tour. Local fraternity and sorority step teams challenge each other at colleges and universities across the United States for a chance to win $2,000 and compete at a national level.
Stepping is a tradition among many African American fraternal organizations, said Aarik Mickens-Dessaso, an ODU student who helped organize Sunday's event.
"In Africa, it was a form of communication," he said. "Now it's a form of unity. It's a form of expressing yourself."
It's also complex, incorporating footwork, clapping, shouting, theatrics and, in some cases, acrobatics.
The Untouchables of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity in Baltimore had all of that, including a dark, flower-covered coffin and a "preacher" who turned into a tights-wearing superhero who battled Spider-Man.
It got a lot of laughs from the audience.
Cooperwood's team, the Theta Rho chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, traveled to ODU from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. The group has been together for about a year, she said. They came up with a theme for Sunday's performance during a brainstorming session two weeks ago and have practiced almost every day since.

The idea: Celebrate the 25th anniversary of Michael Jackson's "Thriller," an album touted as the best-selling album of all time, as well as a revolutionary video.
Stepping wasn't always so elaborate, said Alana Johnson of the Theta Rho chapter from VCU. It was just a lot of footwork and clapping.
But the goal now is to tell a whole story, as Jackson did in his video.
They came onto the stage, kind of quiet at first, dancing rather than stomping. Then the hats came off and the stepping started - loud, reverberating, a music of its own. In "Thriller" fashion, the women became zombies, stepping and then standing still, bodies limp from the waist up, singing, shouting, collapsing, crawling, getting up again.
Then they became dancing, head-tossing girls again before stepping off the stage.

Fiona Phillips: 'I've worked my butt off to get where I am today'

Heather loves GMTV's Fiona Phillips, as do Dave and Gordon. And now she even has a radio show. Sophie Morris reports

Phillips was poached for the GMTV launch from Sky News, where she had worked for three years, rising to entertainment editor. Shortly after arriving in Los Angeles as GMTV's correspondent there she was jolted out of bed in 1994 by an earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale. She had to find her way through the darkness and the sirens and put a news package together. Around the same time she not only got the scoop that Michael Jackson was facing allegations of child abuse, but also managed to steal an interview with his family from NBC, by sneaking into the studio and pretending she was from the American network, and recording the encounter as an exclusive for GMTV.

Mother reveals soap hunk's secrets

The doting mum went on to talk about his love of performing as a child. She said: "When he was five, me and my mum took him to Tenerife and he was a natural at karaoke.
"One minute he was singing Michael Jackson's Black Or White, the next he was wandering through the audience and giving everyone high-fives."
Lynda added: "He was once in a Robin Hood panto wearing green tights, a green hat and a green tunic. One of his friends in the audience shouted, 'Fountain's got tights on!' But Chris just turned around, patted his bum and carried on."

Stones' music resonates throughout Scorsese films

Bill Goodykoontz
The Arizona Republic
Mar. 30, 2008 12:00 AM

Q: You've long made movies about music. (Scorsese was an editor on Woodstock and directed The Last Waltz, No Direction Home and Michael Jackson's video for Bad; he also oversaw and directed an episode of The Blues for PBS.) Why is making music films so important to you?

A: They more than re-energize me. The re-create me, my energy, when I'm making the other films. They give me a kind of creative satisfaction, working with the music, that inspires me for my other films.

I don't believe that Michael isn't doing anything as far a new album. If that article is going to use that hated Michael nickname. They'll make it a point to be nasty about him all the way through. Why would there be all this talk of who's working with him if nothing was being done?

you're welcome :flowers:

I enjoyed the Scorsese interview and the 80's dance article :p MJ "most requested" Yeah baby!!!

gotta love how every statement about -mj working has a 500 page thread about it. But when slash... who is not only more reliable than all those random people saying they're working with, but also whose source is none other than the person who is supposed to be producing the new album... says MJ is NOT working on new material, everyone ignores it.

Shame on you MJ for lying.

I'm NOT ignoring it, and I am also not gonna take a "one-liner" from Slash and try to equate it as MJ not working on new music.

First of all, Slash's "quote" CONTRADICTS everything Will.I.Am has said in the past. It also CONTRADICTS the long list of folks who have "claimed" they are also working with MJ on new music. Are all of those folks LIARS also?

Lastly, Ne-Yo has been talking about new MJ music for the last several months and he wasn't talking about the Thriller 25 project, because Ne-Yo is not on the T-25 project.

Ne-Yo is one of those cat's that continues to say: "I can't say anything about MJ's new project, he'll kill me." Well if there is NO new music, what's the big secret. LOL!

In the latest issue (Nr. 14) of German Bravo magazine you can find a very cool Thriller 25 poster :flowers:

The magazine is available at least in Europe.

Maybe Michael isn't recordning new material anytime soon because he's already finished with the new one and he's in a state of mixing etc, filming video, so in that case he's not recording anytime soon.:D

well he didn't say that.. he said Will.i.am said Michael isn't releasing anything new anytime soon

He did not say that. "He said MJ wasn't RECORDING any new material soon."

That could mean a bunch of things. "Maybe" MJ is not recording any new material, because he already has enough new material.

The reporter's question could have been alluding to whether or not Slash might be on MJ's new project. ONE LINE from a conversation, cannot, and usually does not tell the entire story.

We have ALL been members of these fansites to know that by now.

Michaels working on an album... just stop!!

Michael has been in the studio since 2006.. What do you think he was doing??

Thriller 25 was just worked on in November of last year.. THAT'S IT.. Aside from working on FOR ALL TIMES in October of 2007.

What u think Michael just chose not do work on an album any more because Slash said someone else said something?? please!!

Will.i.am said RIGHT BEFORE THRILLER 25 came out.. Just a couple weeks prior and said that Michael is releasing Thriller 25 then they are working on a new full album to be released after that.. What else do you need??

Slash could have said that for any reason..

He mis understood

He just said it wrong

Just keeping in hush hush

He was told he's not working on anything because Michael does not need him for any projects and will.i.am was too uncomfertable to say so..

ANYTHING..

It was not untill Thriller 25 talk came out that Michael decided to keep his new album a secret.. Before he was just telling people to not talk detales.. Now he's trying to make it look even more secretive.. It's all a plan..

:( is this a April's fool joke?????

Oh the drama.

Maybe Michael isn't recordning new material anytime soon because he's already finished with the new one and he's in a state of mixing etc, filming video, so in that case he's not recording anytime soon.:D

^^ That sounds like a possibility, too.^_^

Or maybe Will's statement to Slash was like when you're interested in a job position but the job isn't necessarily interested in hiring you? That line sounds similar to "we're not accepting any new applications at this time" or "The position's already been filled" (even tho it really hasn't). It's just a nice way to send ppl you're not interested in working with on their merry way.

I think it's interesting how some ppl were quick to take that statement and insinuate that Michael's been lying all this time. All you have to do is think about everything else others have said and you couldn't possibly come to that conclusion. So shame on you. Then again, it's always the same folks ready to attack him over every little statement or thing without knowing all the facts (not that those facts are any of their business anyway). If you honestly think he's a lying bastard and believe new music isn't coming ever, then what's the point of being here tracking his every move? Makes no sense...at least, to me. You obviously believe SOMETHING is happening.
But I guess there's nothing like a good ish stirring to get a discussion/debate going, eh? Works like a charm.

Come on, Michael! ^_^

Thanks to all for posting the news and updates.

I posted 2 more videos about MJ's album.. The new ones added have RED text over it..

1 vid: talks about what MJ is looking for in his new album

2 Vid: About working with Michael 3 songs, that they sound 'pretty amazing' etc..

P.S. STAFF: it did that posting the video two times thing again???

so there are 4 videos of the same 2 videos on the page

Thanks you for the news LJ.

Honestly, some of you are almost adamant that Michael Jackson turns out to be a big disappointment, a recepient of your frustrations whatever they maybe that you amplify the yes, ONE LINERS and rather ambiguous quotations (which may or maynlot be quoted properly) into a finger wagging excuse. Yes, Michael has over the years not delivered on his promises but a line up of artists, producers as well as Michael Jackosn himself enthusiatically claiming to be recording, writing new material need not be dimissed as lies.

get a hold of yourselves...we've had enough evidence ala access hollywood, WMA red carpet comments, will.i.am, NRJ awards speech, neyo, kanye comments to at least understand that Michael IS indeed very much involved ina creative process involving new material. So, please stop sounding like broken records because it is the same names that are whining at every opportunity and no it isn't being a fan that doesn't think Michael can do no wrong..don't go that road.
