THE gentle buzz of a helicopter is not an unusual sound to folk living in Appledore. But it wasn't only the yellow Search and Rescue Sea King that was swooping low over the rooftops last week.

After news that the family of pop legend Michael Jackson were renting a home in the village was revealed in the Gazette on Wednesday morning, the sleepy seaside community very quickly went on to hit the headlines worldwide.

By Wednesday afternoon, three helicopters - dispatched by news editors to get aerial shots of the superstars' new pad - had been spotted by locals eager to know what all the fuss was about.

The Gazette spoke to villagers to find out what they though about the Jackson Five-famed family's arrival next month.

Neil Hocking, who spent Wednesday selling his family's famous ice cream on the village quayside, said he had first heard what he thought was a helicopter while making ice cream in his factory that morning.

"By the time I got down to the Quay, there were three helicopters circling around," he said.

"They kept holding back and waiting for the mist to clear, but seemed to be focusing on an area just behind St Mary's Church.

"A bit later, a photographer from the Daily Mail asked me to pose with a giant ice cream and took a picture of me in the van, looking up Meeting Street."

Soon-to-be Jacksons' neighbours Nick Pearce and Veronica Sharrock, whose homes are just across the road from the celebrities' rental, were quite matter-of-fact about the new arrivals.

"It's fine, I don't mind at all. We will welcome them as neighbours," said Mrs Sharrock. "But we might get a lot of people coming to have a look.

"I don't know if it will be quite what they are used to. They say they want somewhere quiet, but I don't think they will be used to it being as quiet as it is here. But it seems that it will be just temporary until they find a permanent home."

Mr Pearce said he didn't think the Jacksons' arrival would affect them too much, although there might be a few newspaper people around when they were moving in.

"We don't expect to see much of them," he said.

"We moved down here from another part of the country ourselves and have fitted into the village. But if people like the Jacksons can do so is another matter. I don't know if, in the long term, you could expect them to fit into village life. Their world is so removed from ours.

"As a United fan I would be much more excited if it was Paul Scholes, Bobby Charlton or Eric Cantona," he added.

Mayor of Northam and Appledore resident Andrew Eastman said: "Visitors like this are always welcomed to Appledore. We have had celebrities here before and people have taken it in their stride. It is good that they appreciate the village and our tranquil way of life. They are going to create a lot of interest, but we know it is only temporary, before the build their own home in Croyde.

"I do appreciate there are concerns from some residents. But, like it or not, the Jacksons are coming to Appledore and we cannot stop them. We have already had some feedback with people coming to see where the house is and we hope it will not develop into hordes of people.

"But I would like to think that nothing but good will come from this and that it will put Appledore on the map.

Prosperity

"If they are to do a reality show this will again put Appledore in the limelight and if people do come and see our beautiful village I would like to think they will enjoy their stay, visit the local pubs and have an ice cream - and, who knows, what may come of it? It may bring a bit of prosperity."

Graham and Alison Stone of the Beaver Inn thought the Jacksons' arrival could provide the village with a boost.

"It will certainly put Appledore on the map, if it is not there already," said Graham. "It will bring the stargazers to Appledore and, hopefully, they will leave with an appreciation of all the things the area has to offer and why high profile people like this want to live in this part of the world.

"There is currently a lot of talk about people emigrating and looking for greener pastures overseas. But why, when we have all this on our doorstep?"

Alison said she would be delighted if the Jacksons wanted to join their West Quay Fundraisers group and help raise money for local charities.

Claude Bottger and Jane Tanton of the village fish and chip shop were also welcoming.

"They can have their first fish and chips free," said Claude.

"Absolutely brilliant for the village. I think it will do Appledore the world of good," he said.

"I would love to see them do a gig on a big trailer in the car park as a welcome to the village."

Appledore businessman Chris Ommaney said he at one time owned the house the Jacksons were moving into.

But his reaction to the new residents was guarded - a "mixed blessing," he said.

"Whether this will be good or bad, we will not know until they arrive. They may bring a lot of fans, getting in the way and misbehaving, and bodyguards and police are bound to be here. But whether they will also bring benefits to Appledore, I just don't know. If they want to come and stay in my hotel, I will welcome them."

At the local Co-op store, supervisor Henrietta Ballard, a Jackson fan, said: "I can't believe that they are actually coming to Appledore. It would be amazing if I could meet Michael Jackson. But I don't expect that I will even see him."

Michelle Piper of The Look hairdressers, said some clients had thought when the story broke that it was an April Fools joke.

"It is all so surreal that it is difficult to comment," she said.

"But if the Jacksons want a base here, I hope they will like it.

I don't expect it will affect my trade. But if any of them want to come and try my new beauty room, they will be welcome.

STRIP away all the controversy and Michael Jackson remains one of the most influential musical artsts of the past 30 years.

And it is this fact that lies at the heart of Thriller Live, a show which pays tribute to the former King of Pop and also delves into the back catalogue of his early days as frontman with The Jackson 5.

Created by renowned Michael Jackson biographer Adrian Grant, Thriller Live is a full budget mega-show that takes the audience on a journey through the music of the legendary entertainer.

This year is especially significant as it is the 25th anniversary year of the world’s biggest selling album Thriller.

In 2008 the critical and commercial hit production sees not only a brand new 43-date tour with even more amazing choreography, dancers, an amazing band and production.

Day 120 : What the media don't show about Michael Jackson the business man –

EPIC INSTRUMENTALS

Mercury Rev - "The Dark Is Rising"

This symphonic track is taken from Mercury Rev’s 2001 album ‘All Is Dream’ and is a complete aesthetic victory. From the volcanic strings at the opening to the swelling chorus, you can’t get more epic than this. Hard to think the band may not have been; in the late 80s the band broke up and core conspirator Jonathan Donahue was playing guitar with The Flaming Lips but with a growing label interest Mercury Rev reformed and thus we became blessed with tracks like “The Dark Is Rising”.

Alan Silvestri - "Forest Gump Suite"

For those who think epic instrumentals need to be filled with orchestral eruptions and ominous pounding brass, enter Alan Silvestri's Oscar nominated score for Forest Gump. The “Forest Gump Suite” runs through all of the various emotions of different film themes. Gentle and understated it plays like a story; at parts incredibly intimate and engaging and at others it's filled with more wistful and far-away feeling. Bittersweet in sound, it’s heroic not in the grandiose way but instead a poetic tune for the underdog.

Manic Street Preachers - "Motorcycle Emptiness" (Stealth Sonic Orchestra Remix)

This is one of our favourite instrumentals. Remixed by Appllo-440 under their alternative name Stealth Sonic Orchestra, this version of “Motorcycle Emptiness” is executed in an optimistic and crisp classical style. The cord structure for this track and the title were actually taken from the earlier Manic Street Preachers song called "Go, Buzz Baby Go".

Ian Brown - "F.E.A.R" (UNKLE Remix)

UNKLE's remix of "F.E.A.R" is the standout track on Ian Brown’s album of remixes 'Remixes Of The Spheres'. The urgency of the driving beats combined with the majestic strings, bongos and deep dub bass create an inspired listening experience of you guessed it…. epic proportions.

Cherry Ghost - "People Help The People"

So much of the attention bestowed on indie groups can end up focused on image that occasionally song writing skills can be overlooked. Not so is the case with Cherry Ghost, another Manchester outfit. Taken from their debut album 'Thirst For Romance'', "People Help The People" is a simply stunning track. Look out for the gliding, wailing 70s-esque guitar midway through.

Tony Hatch Orchestra - "Beautiful In The Rain"

With the sound of rain pattering in the background and a sad trumpet kicking this tune off, "Beautiful In The Rain" starts off sounding melancholic. However after this a jazzy brass played with a Latin rhythm comes in and the sound grows more hopeful and bright, at parts even sounding idealistic. Yet like a properly chaperoned experience, it drops you off to the heavy hearted spot where you began to let you know the story has ended.

Mint Royale - "Miles and Miles"

Taken from Mint Royale's inspired second album 'Dancehall Places', the cinematic and dreamy "Miles and Miles" would fit comfortably on an Orbital or Moby album. Such is the memorable quality of this track that even if you haven’t heard it before you will insist you recognise it.

I am reading parts of that article regarding the Jacksons supposely moving to Devon and it bothers me. There is no confirmation of the Jacksons moving there and people are basically beliving it. I mean, how stupid can people be? Has anyone even asked if it was true? They are just basing their rumors on some person who claims they know the family. Pathetic.

Thanks for the news Rastsa. The Jacksons need to come out and deny this nonsense before the whole village get their hopes up and be left disappointed. I am pleased that they are very welcoming though.

Is all this talk of Devon about what Matt Fiddes said? At least we know he does know Michael and Tito. Doesn't mean it'll happen though.

There is no evidence that he knows Michael. He was an unpaid bodyguard for MJ for 2 days. Body guards get close to MJ all the time. They hangout in the same room. it doesn't make them friends. There is no evidence that he has been in contact with MJ since then, but he has obviously endearded himself to MJ's brothers, maybe with the intenion to get closer to Michael. All he needs to tell the brothers is that he is a friend of michaels and they would buy it cause they see pictures of him standing next to Michael. This is easily done. He has been using the Jackson name ever since.

That is what Matt Fiddles thinks. He claims these things but he cannot prove these things. A friend of Michael's does not need to waste their time making up stories about him in the press for attention. Matt Fiddles created this mess about the Jacksons leaving America to live in some remote place and he needs to come forward and tell the truth. The Jacksons do not need to do anything.

 totally agree with you Bee, shows you only with Michael because he is so private that anybody can claim some connection and they write about it no other celeb has that cause most other celebs desperately whore out themselves constantly

Slacker Announces Major Publishing Agreements

By Eliot Van Buskirk April 08, 2008 | 10:18:17 AMCategories: Digital Music News

Slacker, makers of an eponymous portable interactive radio player that debuted earlier this year, have announced the publishing agreements that make their service possible. All four major publishing houses have signed on to the service (EMI,Sony/ATV, Universal and Warner/Chappell).
The agreements, signed before Slacker debuted, allow the device users to play, rate and navigate cached internet radio stations and allow users of the premium version of the service to save songs for later playback without paying an extra fee, as is required by other music subscription services.

"By working with the publishers, we can offer a radio experience that is more personalized and - for the first time - completely portable," said Dennis Mudd, CEO of Slacker. "These new partnerships give Slacker customers the freedom to customize personal radio stations to their style and take them wherever they go."

The heads of the various publishing houses were understandably enthusiastic about the fact that Slacker licensed the music beforehand, rather than launching the feature first and dealing with the legal fallout second.

David Renzer, Chairman & CEO, Universal Music Publishing Group: "People who love music want to discover new artists, listen to their favorites and take their songs with them wherever they go. Credit to Slacker for making sure they secured the proper rights before launching and we look forward to distributing royalty checks from Slacker to our UMPG songwriters."

Martin Bandier, Chairman and CEO of Sony/ATV Music Publishing: "The multi-tiered format of this new digital service creates a potentially rewarding user experience. We are happy to agree to license a business where our writers get paid, and move the industry forward in legal song streaming and delivery in the digital space."

Dave Johnson, CEO of Warner/Chappell Music: "Today's music delivery options are evolving rapidly and interactive Internet radio services have the potential to be a promising new business. Slacker's personalized service provides the kind of interactivity and portability that consumers demand and it offers an ideal platform for us to distribute our talented roster of artists, songwriters and producers."

Rasta, thanks for the Slacker-Sony/ATV update.

I was reading about it on Billboard yesterday and it just confirmed how well these music publishers are doing. There are so many NEW ways for music publishers to get their catalog's out there now. Every time you turn around, there is a brand new way to display music. At this point, the money coming in to these publishing houses must be MASSIVE.

I don't know how far in the future MJ was looking when he got involved with music publishing, but the REWARDS have most likely surpassed his initial projection. Go Mike, is all I can say. LOL!

you are welcome!

you made a great point..

now, since Michael was coming from the Berry Gordy & Paul Mc Cartney school about publishing..I think he knew it would be profitable.. and I think he knew long ago.. he did not want to spent his whole life touring...so he did make buying publishing "part of his script".. as Jessie Jackson mentioned...

I like the fact that Michael is earning enormous amounts of money without it ever being front page news.. in order for the naysayers and haters to make a scandal out of it...and have no clue about it...

I am loving that...

think about it...how else could an artist with huge dailyl/monthly/yearly expenses.. maintain his life, his kids life, his family's life, 40+ employees lives, the people who use to steal from him life, lawyers lives with the many lawsuits.. for years without doing a tour or upteen album releases ..to general incoming...???

we can debate to death whether Michael has good business sense ..especially if you argue those "he's broke" stories..

but,

I know his publishing ownership (both Mijac and Sony/ATV) make millions for him everyday..and I don't need a Forbers PR list.. to prove this..

and .. if all the major music labels are doing what ever it takes to get into and maintain .. their publishing business.. you can bet .. there is nough
chaching $$$ being made

Amen, Rasta, amen. MJ is doing a Smokey Robinson on us. Smokey made more money writng songs than performing them himself.

LOL! Who would have EVER thought that Mike had his land working for him like that. When homeboy made that ANNOUNCEMENT, there were more than a few people caught off guard.

You just can't sleep on Michael Jackson, he has proven that time and time again.

OH and Rasta, I agree with everything you said. Holla!

In Switch to MP3, Wal-Mart Loses Sony BMG, Warner Songs

uthored by Mark Hefflinger on April 9, 2008 - 8:54am.
Los Angeles - Following the switch to MP3 format at retail giant Wal-Mart's digital music store, songs from artists on major labels Sony (NYSE: SNE) BMG and Warner Music (NYSE: WMG) have disappeared from the site, Digital Music News reported. Wal-Mart announced last August that it would migrate from Windows Media Audio to the unprotected MP3 format, saying at the time that EMI and Universal Music were on board.

But the Wal-Mart MP3 store is currently void of tracks from popular artists including Madonna, Britney Spears and Michael Jackson -- or any other artists on Sony BMG or Warner Music -- save for tracks on compilations or karaoke versions.

The new incarnation of Wal-Mart's digital music store also only supports Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser.

A source close to the situation told Digital Music News that the labels were to blame, "for demanding onerous concessions in exchange for DRM-free licensing approvals."

I don't think that Matt Fiddes even claimed that the entire Jackson family, including Michael, would be moving to Devon. At first, he was quoted as saying that Tito was moving there. Then if grew to Tito and the brothers, now it is the whole family!

The media doing what they do best. Embellish.
