OWINGSVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A mural of pop singer Michael Jackson painted by students at an eastern Kentucky middle school has been halted after complaints from a local pastor.

The mural was the latest of about a dozen that have been painted in the hallways at Bath County Middle School. Visual arts teacher Lorraine Leadingham says a visit by an artist to her class prompted the start of a mural of the pop music icon, who died June 25.

WTVQ-TV in Lexington reports that Owingsville First Church of God Pastor Lowell Rice heard about the mural at his church. Rice approached the school officials to complain about the mural, questioning whether Jackson is an “appropriate role model.”

Leadingham says midway through the painting, her principal told her to stop. She says she doesn’t understand why the painting was nixed.

Even in death, even in Bath County, Michael Jackson is still a controversial figure. Or rather, a controversial painting.

Bath County Middle School teacher Lorraine Leadingham teaches visual arts. Over the last four years, her students have painted a dozen murals on hallway walls. She told ABC 36 News an artist's visit in August led to a classroom discussion about a painting of Michael Jackson, which the students wanted to add to the hallways.

The work began about five weeks ago. Shortly after that, local Pastor Lowell Rice approached Bath School Board Chairman B.A. Franklin and voiced his displeasure about the painting. He also wrote the school principal as well as superintendent Nancy Hutchinson.

Rice said while he heard about the painting from students who went to the Owinsgville First Church of God.

"If they want their children to become like Michael Jackson, if he's an appropriate role model, if we want his behaviors to be ones our young people mirror, then put his picture up there," Rice said.

Leadingham said midway through the painting, her principal told her to stop. Thursday, she told school officials ABC 36 News was coming to Bath Middle for a "Cool in Schools" feature on the murals. The next day, Michael Jackson, whose first mega-selling album was entitled "Off The Wall," was off the wall at Bath Middle.

Leadingham said she doesn't agree with or understand the decision.

"At our last school dance, the majority of the music requested by the kids was Michael Jackson's music, we have a cheerleading squad that's doing their routines to Michael Jackson's music, and our high school band plays his music at the ball game," she said.

Neither Superintendent Hutchinson nor Bath Middle's principal returned calls from ABC 36 News.

What are you talking about? I have not even read the article yet.

I just wished that people stop putting such irrelevant articles in this forum. I know I can just ignore it but I find that many users have been posting such articles like your above in this thread. To be honest, it ruins the whole vibe of the forum for me. I'm sorry if I offended you. That was not my intention.

And for the record, I am a damn PROUD MICHAEL JACKSON FAN, thank you very much!

Sorry, It sounds stupid I know.....

but I'm really scared it has something to do with the allegations again. (sigh)

I just dont like bad news... It's nothing personal..... Okay? ^_^

It's sad. I wish the whole world could see Michael as we do. He is a great role model, an ambassador of love.

Well, I wish I knew the Pastor's address so I could send him some information to educate him why he should be absolutely honored to have a mural of Michael Jackson.

The problem is folks are still harboring under mass misinformation about the gifted one. I'd love to help open the Pastor's eyes. I wouldn't make any mention or defenses about the molestation nonsense, but would herald Michael's humongous contributions to society as a whole.

1. Like him being the single largest donor in 34 years to an aids, leukemia foundation.

2. Like literally thousands of disadvantage children having the time of their lives at Neverland for free because Michael built it to bring a little magic to their lives.

3. Like his work ethic was to give everything he had to bring joy to others.

4. Like he treated all people with respect and kindness.

5. Like despite abuse, racism, health issues, persecution, he never stopped striving to be the best and give his best.

etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

Michael was a great man. And I'd love to enlighten the pastor.

It's this whole child molestation charges that still linger's in these narrow minded folks. Despite the fact he was aquitted...

He's a better role model then most in the industry today. Don't even get me started

Well, I assume they're going to put it up then.

What a terrible, terrible role model! Isn't the message in Michael's songs pretty much EXACTLY what the church teaches us? Let me provide you with just one of many examples:

How many people will have to die before we will take a stand
How many children will have to cry, before we do all we can
If sending your love is all you can give
To help one live

How many times can we turn our heads
And pretend we cannot see
Healing the wounds of our broken earth
We are one global family
Just sending your prayers
Is something you feel
Helping one heal

Brother to brother, lay down our fears and reach out and make a pact
Show him the love that is in our hearts, let us bring salvation back
Just sending your love has the power to heal
So let's all give

Say the words, I'll lay 'em down for you
Just call my name, I am your friend
See then why do they keep teaching us
Such hate and cruelty

What have I got that I can give?

Now, isn't this exactly what this pastor is teaching children every day in his church? To give? To love your neighbour? To do what you can to heal the world? So, uh, what's this pastor complaining about? I guess he would rather a mural with faces like 50 Cent and Eminem. Maybe they might be better role models

There's got to be some way to contact him via email or snail mail. We can definitely send positive info on MJ to the school principle or other school officials or at least the teacher who wants the mural done.

Considering how Michael was treated in the press, unless someone looks beyond the headlines, they don't genuinely know about him. These folks really are ignorant to the truth. We've got it on our side. We should make them aware of it or remind them of it.
Michael was acquitted.

There are all these wonderful stories on the net about Michael of how he was an inspiration and helped others. We should get them to this school so they know, too. The school and their community would be lucky to have children of the character and caliber of Michael Jackson.

If there is an email address of the school/church we should email all the info we have

Re: The Daily News Oct 7

I don't know if this had already been talked about or is in the Enough is Enough section. But I just read this article in my MJ google alerts that students from a middle school in Kentucky were painting a mural of Andy Warhol paintings and Michael Jackson's famed Warhol portrait was one of those chosen to be part of the mural. When parents got wind of this, they started to complain to the school because they thought it was inappropriate because of the child molestation charges. The kids have already started to paint it and it looked about 60% done and now they aren't going to finish it and it is being covered up by wooden boards. :(

The art teacher had said this mural project had been going on for years and other Warhol portraits included Marilyn Monroe.

One parent said that he did not want MJ's portrait there because he did not agree that children should look up to him because of the molestation charges.

You can read it here:

The comments are really tasteless and these people sound like they have been brainwashed by Peter King. It's just so frustrating that a wonderful man like Michael can't be honored because two kids were manipulated by their greedy parents.

Claims should NOT keep people from doing things. And this man went through the system and was cleared. If this parent is going to judge everyone who is lied on, then I guess she will not want no one.

Peter King did not brainswash no one (there was a backlash against him. More people was mad at him than who supported him). I hope these kids paint the MJ. And remember, Michael is HONORED EVERYDAY BY MILLIONS of people even before he died. SO MJ is getting his due do not be fooled by the FEW people who talk trash.

Yes, exactly.. It sounds like the teacher & the school kids and perhaps some of the community know better.. it's so hypocritical among other things... I feel bad for the kids and the ones who know better that have a man of God be so narrow minded. The kids even said that their shoocl dances play MJ's music and all,but then they can't do a mural. I want Michael's message & truth to be known to those who really need be shown in this case the pastor :(

I can't find anywhere to contact. I really would in a nice way like to send some info. to them about the real Michael

Agreed. Also inform them that atleast make a opinion about someone based on facts and reading learning about a person instead of ignorance closed minded & hypocritical judgements. I certainly feel that those teenagers are let down and the teacher.. I would want them to know they have a right as Americans (they live in USA to freedom and to know they have a right to choose to think All humans, who live & breath anywhere, have a right to choose for their selves. teaching ignorance is still going on today in 2009 almost 2010 amazing.

Hmm. . . you may be right. Racism is far from extinct in this country.

Michael always did think that racism was at the root of some of the problems he had to deal with.
