Two of Michael Jackson's three children-his beautiful daughter Paris, and handsome older son Prince Michael-accepted an award for him at this year's Grammy celebration. Whether it was a classy move on the part of the Grammy Gods, or brash exploitation of the Gloved One's loved ones, I'll leave for others to determine. Of course, an argument can be made that they are, in fact, Jacksons; and wowing a worldwide audience is naturally in their blood, so to speak. On the other hand, whether genetics is a factor or not, exposing the children to a curious world of onlookers may be moving them along too far too fast, especially after their Daddy's relatively recent death. Furthermore, given the fact that the rigors of showbiz robbed a tender-aged Michael Jackson of his own childhood, it is highly unlikely that the King of Pop would have exposed his Dashing Prince and Precious Princess to a voyeuristic global village. Whatever the case, a growing number of people firmly believe Michael Jackson's legacy has been-and is being-illegally hijacked. They believe a conspiracy is afoot.
Although behind the scenes plans have been in the works to charge Dr. Conrad Murray, Michael's physician, with involuntary manslaughter for some time now, questions like these from a concerned fan persist: "How is the Michael Jackson investigation going? Do you think those investigating know of the truth that Michael was...murdered? Or at least have an idea that he was? And do you think they are investigating his death as if it were a murder?" Many believe that charging Murray should be the tip of the iceberg. They're convinced that powerful transnational forces conspired not only to murdered Michael, but are now making untold millions in profit dollars in the post-Jackson era. Since a conspiracy implies organization, the perpetrators are perceived by many fans to be organized criminals. Collusion between various parties-even criminal organizations-is indeed a serious charge.
If, in fact, investigators are proceeding as if an extravagant conspiracy is involved, it would explain why it has taken so long, and also may well suggest that more arrests are in the offing. Still, the public is usually in the dark when it comes to the intricacies of clandestine criminal conspiracies. As one authoritative work puts it: "The disadvantage of a conspiracy includes the long-term commitment to gather evidence, which is likely to be manpower-intensive. In major investigations, extensive surveillance is conducted and testimony of witnesses needs to be verified and corroborated, which often requires overtime and manpower. Multiple venues often pose political and logistical problems." And, of course, not just any law enforcement officer can effectively conduct an investigation. The same work reveals: "The investigator must be well trained in [specialized] methods and also be allowed time and resources to conduct such complex and long term cases."
There are two types of criminal conspiracies, ongoing and chain. As its name implies, an ongoing conspiracy is one that exists simultaneously while it is being investigated. A chain conspiracy is when all co-conspirators are connected, but only certain ones interact with certain others. This effectively provides layers of protection for key figures behind criminal activities-particularly those who hide behind legitimate businesses. Still, prosecutors are enamored with conspiracy cases as these relate to organized criminal activity. Why? "Conspiracy cases allow prosecution of leaders of organized crime groups even when they attempt to insulate themselves with subordinates, or when they remain in a foreign country, never entering the United States where the objective of the conspiracy is reached." Here are another 10 other reasons (there are more) why prosecutors favor conspiracy charges:
1. Conspirators don't have to know each other.
2. Each is responsible for the actions of the others.
3. Each is an agent for each other.
4. Conspirators don't have to know the actions of others.
5. Any action that carries out the objective of the conspiracy is an overt act.
6. Overt acts don't have to be criminal acts.
7. Overt acts need not be known by all participants.
8. Any act or statement by one conspirator can be used against all.
9. A statute of limitations applies and varies between states.
10. Evidence against one defendant is evidence against all.
Perhaps the above may help Michael Jackson fans, and others, understand why certain investigations take so long. If Michael Jackson's death is in fact the result of an elaborate ongoing conspiracy, then this would explain seeming delays. Intriguingly, the Patriot Act, legislation that remains a cause for concern on the part of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), is an invaluable tool in conspiracy cases. In any event, if Michael Jackson's legacy has been and is being hijacked due to a conspiracy, we're in for a long court battle. Fire up your DVRs.
