Are there any videos of Michael full on bodypopping like people do in hip-hop these days, I know he does waving in This Is It but wondering if there are anymore? :D.

Stranger in Moscow is bodypopping with his own style, and I know he also does waving in several Billie Jean performances along with robotics...

...but I'd like to see some popping from him :D.

I have actually seen him doing bodypopping in some 1970's videos. Of course, it was not identified as the same thing. He would spin and do something like a split on the floor. Michael was very innovative.

The Jacksons Variety Show I guess? :).

Would you have a link?

No it was not on that show, although he may have done some there. I have some videos at the house that compile different performances of Michael and the J5. They are not official releases more like people putting footage together and selling them at cultural street fairs. I do not know how to put it on the computer, unfortunately.

would be nice to see some videos of michael doing that because i cant think of any:no:

What does "bodypopping" mean?
sorry, English is not my native language....

I could take a guess, but I might be wrong. Do you guys mean poppin' and lockin"?

If so PCR it is similar to what Rerun from What's Happening is known for. It is a kind of dance. Chris Brown does it in a segment of his new video Yeah! 3Xs.

MJ and his brothers were doing it on their variety show on one episode. I'll fiind the link if that is what you are talking about :)

Dancing Machine Michael doing "The Robot"

Higher Quality performance of Dancing Machine:

-Michael Jackson when he danced he had a flow and naturally moved like poppin' & lockin' he was a base for that type of dance & movement.

Michael Jackson poppin' & lockin'

Edit:

In the mid - late 70's poppin' & lockin' was the dance that was developing.. and I would say Michael merged right into that being a dancer already and Michael did "The Wiz" in 77' released in 78' so even his character in that movie is alot like poppin' & lockin'. The 'jerky' & "stiff" movements & the flow of the movements Mike showed us in this performance of the Scare Crow. Also studying the other characters, too. A video montage below, but it don't show some scenes I'm speaking of,but if you have a sense of dance or are a dancer you'd know how I mean.

I know he could do it full on. I think that Michael just loved different dance so much that he incorparted many dances into one and put his own stamp on it. But if you watch the above and below video clips you can see just how aware and able poppin & lockin came to Michael naturally.. You could see in your mind him do it in full force by watching the clips.

Other video clips:

"Smooth Criminal" is a great example of poppin' & lockin' When he comes down the 'stairs' and the dance break are obvious examples although it's through-out the video.

"Remember The Time" Dance Break @ 6:15 - King Tutting

"Ghosts" has some wonderful poppin' & lockin'

"2 Bad" from "Ghosts"

"This Is It" rehersals good example of poppin' & lockin'

The way I think is that if it wasn't for people like Michael Jackson, people like Chris Brown, Usher, Justin Timberlake etc. wouldn't have the classic 'robotic' moves and 'The Slide Glide' etc. Of course there's the old school break dancers that was on shows like Soul Train etc. whom I can't name them right now,my mind is failing me right at the moment) who influenced poppin' & lockin' known later as break dancing.. And, Michael was right there helping pioneer this dance back in the 70's and through-out his career. I can always see poppin' & lockin' through-out most all of Michael's short films & perfomances. I admire dance very much. I am a dancer myself. a little tid-bit about myself.

By the way, can anyone explain how Mike (while he was with the Jackson 5) can spin so fast and not get entangled with the microphone's cords? He would have to transfer the mic from one hand to the other but he did not seem to be doing that. He seemed to defy physics and up to now this is a mystery to me.

^^Have no idea.

souldreamer, you got the ones I was thinking of. I actually youtubed MJ and Popping & locking and they came out with a lot of videos on this. They had quite a few coomparing his and Chris Brown's moves, as well.

It shows how much Chris orrowed from MJ and how much MJ owns him.

Thats a good one. He would spin around in one direction and have the cord wrap around his thighs as he spins, and he knew exactly when to stop reverse the direction in which he was spinning to untangle himself gracefully. As we say---What A Man!!!!!!!!!

He talked about spinning on his way to taking his little brother to school before they moved to LA, so he was spinning from an early age. I guess after beginning so young and practicing constantly, you become an expert.

I heard Debbie Allen saying that Michael would always be knocking on her door and asking her to help him with his spins. She would tell him to go away because his spins were better than that Russian ballet dancer (I cannot remember the name begins with B).

Yeah we was thinking of some of the same videos! I tried to find the video clips that I could think of and others that gave examples through my point of view anyway. But yeah.. I agree with you.

I remember it was like 2007,maybe and my niece she was then 12 or 13 yrs. old and she was talking about Chris Brown,Usher etc.. She was searching youtube videos to learn dance moves & some was the side glide etc. and I told her well you've gotta know who Michael Jackson is right? If it wasn't for people like Michael than there wouldn't be people like Chris Brown & Usher. I showed her some youtube videos of Mike to refresh her memory and she was just like "Wow!" She's been a fan of Michael Jackson 'hardcore' every since then.

I admire & respect dance so much. I think from posts I've seem from you before that you seem to like dance alot too,if my memeory serves me correctly.

It's always a good thing that younger artists pay respect to Michael.

Although, sometimes you just gotta keep respect to the orginal thing.

Well I've never personally been in that situation holding a mic while dancing and singing at that,so I am not sure how Michael perfected that. The only thing that I could add would be that Michael had been doing it since such a young age and since he was obviously so gifted in dance & performance that maybe it was something he just developed, and eventually just mastered. Sometimes there's just those 'things' that one can 'just do' and they somehow just know that they can do it. I know how you mean because I've seen performances of Michael with the mic cord and though "Wow" - cus it did seem like he would not make that spin or move and get tangled up and perhaps fall..but he didn't.

Here's one of those performances where I've thought that:

Yes.. I remember her saying this too. It's the Russian Dancer Mikhail Nikolaevich Baryshnikov

Edit*
I found it. It was the 20/20 special from 2009. Debbie Allen speaking on Michael @ 2:05

WOW!! Is all I can say! Those video's are just...eugh there are no words!!

Mindblowing!

I love the way he was adding more 'pop and lock' dance in HIStory at the end of Billie Jean, around 9:25 is my favourite, with MJ smoking his imaginary cigarette , HIStory will always be my favourite tour

I was intrigued and watched a lot of Jackson 5 videos and I thought about that too, looking for evidence of that cord wrapped around him and there was no cord! Which means it did not wrap around him at all (or maybe my eyes were deceiving me even though I was called "eagle eyes" when I did proofreading). I understand Mike was interested in magic so maybe he was doing some optical illusions. If anyone can explain this, he/she should get the Nobel Prize for Physics.
