Sony/ATV’s “Musical Notes” #18
A fortnightly newsletter highlighting some of the many classic songs in the Sony/ATV Music Publishing catalog
From Alan Warner, Creative Consultant

Boop-Boop-A-Doop, It’s Betty!
One of American cinema’s favorite early cartoon characters was the sexy, shimmy-dancing Betty Boop who captivated audiences in the 1930’s.
The Betty Boop song is just one of a host of Sony/ATV compositions which appear in our recommended list of Children’s Songs…songs for kids of all ages. (The list is in our latest catalog newsletter).
You’ll also find favorites featured in hit cartoon movies such as Neil Diamond’s I’M A BELIEVER which was used so memorably in the first “Shrek” film, as well as recent compositions recorded for Razor & Tie’s chart-busting “Kidz Bop Kids” series of albums including their version of K.T. Tunstall’s song “Black Horse And The Cherry Tree”.

STORIES BEHIND CLASSIC Sony/ATV SONGS 2:
TWIST AND SHOUT (Bert Berns/Phil Medley)
Hit versions:
THE ISLEY BROTHERS (Wand/Global: 1962)
US #2 R&B, 17 Pop, UK #42 (in ’63)
BRIAN POOLE & THE TREMELOES (UK Decca/Universal: 1963)
UK #4
THE BEATLES (Tollie/EMI: 1964)
US #2 Pop (Capitol/EMI: 1986 re-issue) US #23 Pop
SALT-N-PEPA (Next Plateau/Universal: 1989)
US #45 R&B, UK #4 (in ’88)
CHAKA DEMUS AND PLIERS (Mango/Universal: 1993) UK #1
Famed songwriter/producer Bert Berns wrote “Twist And Shout” with fellow Brill Building songsmith Phil Medley and pitched it to Atlantic Records where Jerry Wexler and a young Phil Spector recorded it with a vocal group called The Top Notes. The arrangement was however not how Bert had envisaged it and after the Atlantic single disappeared without trace, he took the song to The Isley Brothers and produced their version himself. The result was an instant classic and a song which Liverpool groups such as The Beatles and The Searchers adopted.
*Beatle historical note:
Pictured above is the first-ever Beatles EP; released in July ’63, it actually appeared on the UK singles chart. The boys often performed “Twist And Shout” on radio, TV and in concert; it was one of the songs included in their Ed Sullivan Show appearance in 1964 and when they performed at the Hollywood Bowl the following year.

Adding to Rasta's "MJ Business News":
Now Rasta here's 2 questions for you (or anybody else who might know). Does this sound like BRAND NEW income for Sony/ATV? To this point, publishing royalties have not been collected in these EMERGING Asian markets?

Leona Lewis tops U.S. album chart
Wed Apr 16, 4:32 PM ET
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - New pop sensation Leona Lewis debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. album chart this week, the first British woman to achieve this feat, her record label said on Wednesday.

Just three weeks ago, the 23-year-old winner of British talent show "X Factor" rewrote the history books when her song "Bleeding Love" hit No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart.
It was the first time a British female solo artist had topped the chart since Kim Wilde went to No. 1 in 1987 with a cover of the Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On."
"Bleeding Love" is from the album "Spirit," which sold 205,000 copies this week in the United States.
Simon Cowell, a record executive who groomed Lewis and appeared as a judge on "X Factor," called the achievement "simply incredible.
"This is the hardest market to crack and for her debut album to go in at number 1 is unbelievable," he said in a statement.
The Daily Variety trade publication said "Spirit" ranks as the biggest-selling debut by a female artist since former "American Idol" champ Carrie Underwood's "Some Hearts" debuted at No. 2 with 314,500 copies in November 2005.
Lewis won "X Factor" in 2006, securing a contract with Cowell's Syco Records, which partnered on the project with New York-based J Records.
"Spirit" debuted at No. 1 in the UK last November, while "Bleeding Love" was Britain's biggest-selling single last year.
J Records is a unit of Sony BMG Music Entertainment, a joint venture between Sony Corp and Bertelsmann AG.

The Dalai Lama, left, looks on as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, of South Africa, does
an impromptu dance move after remarking that his wireless microphone made him
feel like pop star Michael Jackson, during an event Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at the
University of Washington in Seattle. The event took place on the final day of a five-day
visit by the Dalai Lama to Seattle centered around the theme of "Seeds of Compassion."

"Billboard.biz reported that Sony/ATV has authorized Sony BMG Music Entertainment to collect publishing royalties for them in the EMERGING markets of China, Hong Kong, Singapore, India and others covered by the deal."
Apparently, Sony BMG already has this same type of deal with Universal Music Publishing Group. Sony BMG has a system in place for collecting royalties in these Asian countries, and Universal and now Sony/ATV will also be using Sony BMG's collection system.
Now Rasta here's 2 questions for you (or anybody else who might know). Does this sound like BRAND NEW income for Sony/ATV? To this point, publishing royalties have not been collected in these EMERGING Asian markets?
Can you make the MJ connection from this article about Leona Lewis -
Here is a clue:

the irony is that Simon Cowell is not the only one making money off every Idol winner worldwide............
so does Michael! ................. ...
thanks to lesliemjhu.
Taken from my blog:
Another Settled Case!
Michael Jackson settled another court case, one of his last ones!
On April 14, 2008 Berstein, Fox, Whitman, Goldman and Sloan asked for a dismissal on the case they brought againts Jackson back in 2006.
Jackson's lawyer did so in the counter suit case.
With this surprising move Jackson has left with a very handful of court cases!
Can we see Tutu´s impromptu dance on youtube?
I´ve always thought his Holiness the Dalai Lama and Michael would have fun together... But I dunno whether they´ve ever met each other.
