MJ was a Sex God -- While Media Pretends Not to Notice

Here's another straight guy post. I'm 21 and have grown up with Micheal. I have always thought that he oozed a type of sexuality that women couldn't resist. Just look at videos like TWYMMF, he gets a girl thats "out of his league" and shows her that he is worth it. I have always thought he was a model for those of us who are not like other guys. So, you would have to be blind not to see that Micheal is sexy. If I were female, I don't think I could resist :)

YES! I completely agree! As a straight guy, I completely agree.

Omigosh, I'm so glad to see I'm not the only one with this (very real) dilemma...

i know what you mean.

Glad to see i'm not the only one either!

Ladies, I think our best bet is finding a man who's a fan of the guy. A fan in more ways than one if you know what I mean. Just liking "Thriller" isn't gonna cut it anymore for me, lol!

This is a very interesting question. I've been curious about this same thing. You always hear how he was such a childhood heartthrob in the teen magazines, but what about into his teens? And then 80s and 90s?

As y'all can see, I'm very interested in the media treatment (and dismissal) of Michael's striking sexual charisma. If y'all find anything, post your links here. Thanks!

Meanwhile, it's been awesome reading your own impressions of the guy.

I think the women here have been especially fascinated to hear from those of you straight men who've been kind enough to give your take on MJ's sexuality -- I wonder if any of you used his style or moves? Did it work? :) And how about you GLBTs?

Bo

I've read through my parents old articles regarding Michael and found some on the internet as well, and to be honest the media never seemed to portray michael as sexy, not even during the thriller era. He seemed too much of a boy for them at that time, and they kept talking about his childish and androgynous looks. I think they speculated even back then that he might be gay or asexual.
His fans however, and females in general, seemed to view him in an entirely different light, they always have and always will :) Why? well.. let's just say it becomes ridiculously obvious that he is neither gay nor asexual once you see him perform... it's just something the media chooses to ignore.

Funny, I was just wondering about that the other day.

Has Michael ever made the best dress list? Or the sexiest man?

Apparently not.

The lamestream media is so ingorant and out of touch with what people like. They have their own agenda and just stick to it. I bet not many media people have seen Michael's DVDs and youtubes.

How can this not be the sexiest man that ever lived?

Bo_G, awesome post. You are so eloquent and perfectly convey this issue that I have pondered before yet never articulated.
I just cannot understand why people are so uncomfortable with him being considered sexy.

Michael is absolutely a sex god, he was so sexy and he knew how to show it! :naughty:
It annoys me that the media can't see that because they try to give everyone this weird image of Michael which is not true, but hey that's the media and nothing in the media is true!
But Michael was definitly sexy.
I think the shyness and the humbleness made him sexy but also the animal he was on stage made him sexy

*TEARS* thanks for that youtube video it was HEAVEN looking at Mj face in close up! i MISS HIM SO MUCH! *tears*

Thanks to Michael Jackson, with his physical beauty and also his amazing personality, morals, values and beliefs, I now have what some may call "too high" of a standard for men.

To me, none can compare. And since Michael was somewhat of an "ideal" for me, I can't seem to find anyone close to that caliber. His looks (before and after surgeries) were gorgeous beyond words to me. His morals are hard to find in young men these days as well.

Thanks a lot Michael....

Nice to know I'm not the only one here! We're in trouble.....LOL

I hear you, but much as I love and admire MJ's artistry, I honestly would vastly prefer to have a regular, nonsuperstar man around. Truly. Expecting one's partner to be similar to one of the most photographed and lusted-for humans in history, who spent a fortune on his face and clothes, who surrounded himself with famous "spiritual advisors," who pal'd around with Nelson Mandela, the Clintons and Princess Di, seems a bit too much pressure on a potential mate, and oneself, don't you think? :)

I find the real world more of a turn-on than the fantasy world. I'm happy with a partner who's simply picked up a little wisdom about people (maybe from threads like this :) ), who've realized they will find their partner more, well, passionate, if they're kindhearted, understanding, and romantic, mixed with just a little swagger and style -- and are willing to get on the dancefloor!

Personally, I am completely attracted to the sartorial flair of Michael's clothes! They scream taste and individuality. I'm a sucker for a man in a suit and his are always made to perfection but never look like something that promotes conformity.

Also, I love Michael's pushing of established gender lines when it comes to aesthetics. It annoys me when some people try to downplay his use of make up or clothing that could be considered feminine, like it's a bad thing. It's not a bad thing, it's creative! And it just goes to show, if it looks good - it looks good! Doesn't matter if "society" would tell you that your gender isn't "supposed" to wear a woman's jacket or cosmetics. And if Michael's use of these affects combined with his strong sense of his own sexuality as a straight male empowered some within the LGBT community to be more comfortable within their own selves then that is a good thing IMO. Michael's confidence oozes from his fashion "risk taking".

I also think it's hilarious how the mainstream media ignores the crotch grabbing as some kind of quirk or "eccenticity" and doesnt acknowledge it for the absolute lady tease that it is! haha. I think the reason the media will not label Michael sexy is because it's a huge backflip on what they've told us are acceptable sexy "traits" such as men with bulky arms, ripped stomachs, and ken doll faces and women with barbie doll proportions. Anyone who appears to subvert those two ideals gets shafted into the "odd" or "acquired taste" catergory. And as a result, the mainstream think it's weird to find those people appealing. It's silly, but many people are too insecure to go against the grain.

I think you've hit on one of the keys to the puzzle here, Nivea, when you say "Once you see him perform." I truly believe many journalists were reacting only to photos, interviews, and other press reports, and were therefore missing the biggest part of Michael -- his performances. Because Michael put so much of himself into these, any journalist is obligated ti review his performances over the years to understand the man. Not just the part of him that loved a carousel ride, for god's sake:doh: Yet this obvious bit of homework wasn't done. His performances are 100% proof the man's not asexual, and whose sexuality was of a very adult, not childlike, nature.

Such journalists are like the 3 blind men touching an elephant, trying to understand what they were encountering, one feeling the hide, another the trunk, another a leg -- none had the slightest picture of the whole creature.

I would argue, though, that his performances don't necessarily indicate whether or not he was gay. That's in part why he was beloved by many in the gay community. But I do think he was straight because a) he said so, and b) no credible evidence of gay affairs has emerged, while there's much evidence of his interest in women (his Presley marriage, the Shmuley and Glenda tapes, etc.)

Cosign.

I also believe the crotch-grabbing was for men as well as women -- didn't you men find that this made you think about your own male organs, and how these would respond while being strutted so sexily around lusting onlookers? (Mind you, I think only superstars on stage can get away with this :) )

(Mods: I'm going to try to keep this thread within good taste, say PG-rated -- let me know if I need to tone it down).

Yeah, that part became so evident in TII movie when the woman choreographer was teaching the dancers the crotch grab and they were wearing sweat pants and they were grabbing their genitals in all kind of wrong ways. I was like eeeeuuuuuh yuk!

Only Michael can get away with it.

lol !!

Yeah, it's true. This is a pretty interesting point. I have a hard time watching anyone else do it; on anyone else it seems too crude.

yeah i guess. guys these days lack moral intelligence (where im from anyway). why dont they like to read history books and why dont they admire the same philosphers that i do? all they're into is porn and ortotune music

Journalists and critics remain strikingly uncomfortable noting the sexual aspect of MJ's charisma for so many fans. MJ remained an object of lust worldwide to his last day; the media continues to ignore this 800-pound gorilla in the room.

Here's a comment I just posted at the Denver Post:

OH...you said it beautifully. I remember watching that Diane Sawyer interview with a solo Lisa when Diane asked Lisa with an aghast tone, "what were you thinking in marrying Michael Jackson?" Diane just made it seem so astounding that someone would want to marry him.

I remembered yelling at the screen, tell her the truth. Tell her because Michael is the sexiest finest thing walking in a pair of gold pants!

The question is: How could any woman not want that beautiful face close to theirs, you crazy butt journalist.

LOL. God, what a horrible scene that was. Sawyer saying "Michael Jackson?! Michael JACKSON??!!!" As I've said elsewhere, she's used to grilling world leaders, and hinted strongly at her resentment for being assigned this entertainment story. I think it likely Sawyer, like many journalists, simply had NO IDEA MJ was a sex idol for millions; she knew only the Peter Pan side, and failed to do her homework her because she didn't take it seriously. You can see how this happened -- media always left out the sex idol angle. YouTube is pretty recent, and most people didn't get to see him live.

Lisa Marie, not used to facing such a high-powered journalist, caved under such bullying and intimidation. Just horrible. And damaging. I have little doubt, especially now, that Lisa Marie cringes to recall this.

Thanks for bringing this up. It was seeing this interview for the first time recently that I developed my whole interest in this topic.

YES, exactly, yes!
I thought the same thing during that part of the film.
Whenever anyone impersonates Michael in dance too, the crotch grab always comes across a little...graphic.

Somehow Michael is still the only one who can do it right.

Yeah, the first time I saw that interview I remember feeling confused and angry at Lisa Marie.
It was so painfully obvious that she was caving and trying to avoid the public thinking she was "gross" for being attracted to him.
I found it uncomfortable to watch.
I would have had respect for her if she had just said "YES. I was sexually attracted to him. Because he was SEXY. Period" and just stuck to what she thought.
But to say "yeah, I was attracted to him at the time..." (read: I know, I know! What was I thinking?! How terrible) , just to distance herself from the mess the media was portraying him to be at the time? Not classy.

I'm so fascinated by this topic. I find myself half-hoping that I am assigned a paper for a class dealing with sexuality in America, just so I can have an excuse to devoting my time to researching it, haha.

Oh yes Lisa's reaction upset me too. Diane was a b**** for even asking the question like that in the first place, but Lisa should have been brave enough to say that she did in fact find Michael sexy and was attracted to him instead of acting embarrassed and ashamed. Sometimes I can see where Lisa is coming from and I don't always think she was wrong for some of the things she said, but I couldn't get on her side with that one. I hated how she handled that.

Plenty of women find/found MJ attractive though. It's not just about looks with me eventhough i've always thought Michael was beautiful and besides his personality, he has a certain sexiness and charisma about him that i've always been attracted too. I've always found him attractive, always.

It's really deep, isn't it? I's a large and intriguing story that has fallen in the cracks, which leaves an opening for us. It has significant broader implications for media and social critique. I think if folks help pitch in with a little research here and there, we'd quickly accumulate enough material for a decent article on this subject in a respectable magazine. But if it just makes it into a major blog that gets linked to, I'd be happy. I just don't have the time to do most of the research just now, so consider yourself assigned! Co-authors are also welcome, and credit given to all! (Though I'll probably chicken out and use a pseudonym if I publish).
