New Album Question? Can MJ trying to be to perfect sometimes be a bad thing.

Michael does not take "TOO LONG" on an album. Mike takes as long as he wants and needs. All his previous albums have been of the highest quality and well worth the time we waited for them. He is not on anyone's time schedule apart from his own. He might feel like going out for lunch one day, or going to the movies, or just watching cartoons or having a sleep in and a friggen bubble bath for crying out loud. The producers, musicians or engineers may not be available ALL the time. The studio might be booked certain days. We dont KNOW that he is working on this album every second of the day. If he is combining being a parent, having his own person life AND making an album then its no wonder its taking so long.. and more power to him!

Right on damien. Tell it like it is. And like I mentioned earlier, part of the challange IS getting what he hears in his mind in to reality. That takes time, especially for someone like Michael who has to make it happen by singing the parts to his musicians until they play what it is he hears.

As far as I know perfectionist usually bother themselves the most unless they are adults and can deal with knowing they'll never be satisfied with themselves.

As Michael was always in his very own skin and can't slip it, I'd say he did wonderfully before and he will again!

There were several pr tendencies before... at times of oxygen coffin etc. we got fooled with some influence from Michaels management also.

Compared to that not knowing a thing doesn't bother me personally too much.

I'm pretty much a person telling ppl about my work usually also: when it's ready, it's ready and you'll know and that's early enough.
So I can give that to Michael easily also.
Just have some faith ppl, please that's really all you need.

l don't agree with you Invincible was a perfect album just like Thriller and bad... but the new generation is not perfect.

What people don't get about "Thriller" and "Bad" also is that, while the recording process took 7 or 8 months itself, Michael had been working on the actual albums themselves for years, writing songs, picking songs, etc...

Sometimes when we try to hard...we lose what has always been there..!

^^^IMO there are NO other artists just as talented as Michael Jackson. If there were, then there would be more "Michael Jackson's"

David Bowie
Paul McCartney
George Michael
Prince
The Moody Blues
U2
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
The Rolling Stones
Queen

....

You get the point. All of the above artists are legendary, and are just as talented musically as Michael Jackson. And THEY keep their fans in the loop. That's all I was saying.

Sometimes I wonder about MJ fans. Michael Jackson is a legend, but he's not the only one.

Youre defnitely right babebemine. Mike seems to be obsessed with being this great philosopher of music who understands the formulae for the perfect song... whereas he seems to forgot that at the heart of the music there should be a feeling of freedom and passion, rather than a formulae.... and that music is about doing what feels right.
something that scared me was when he said "I look to put music under the microscope and manipulate the character of it"

It shouldn't scare you...it's given you all of his great music thus far.

His "formula" has obviously worked for him in the past, so it shouldn't fail him now. Tried and true! :D

The man's a genius!

James Brown would sing parts to his musicians and didn't take a long time to make a record. Back then a lot of acts put out 2 or 3 albums a year. Prince recorded so fast that Warners didn't want to release most of the material, and this was one of his gripes with them.

The invincible up tempo tracks to me just seemed way over produced and like he was trying to hard. Especially Unbreakable and Heartbreaker. These are tracks that die hard MJ fans liked because die hard fans pretty much like whatever there favorite artist puts out, but those tracks were not very well liked by the average music fan. I remember Big Boy on Power 106 in LA saying they seemed over produced. They really liked songs like Butterflies, Break Of Dawn and Heaven can wait. These are the tracks r&b stations were playing.

Id like to see MJ get back to that feelin good singing style on his dance tracks and the beats not be so over produced. Just keep the beat simple with a great melody and smooth vocals. I don't know if it's his spending way to much time trying to perfect the songs or not. Just keep it simple.

I want that Off The Wall flava on the dance tracks vocally with the catchy melodies.

Geez... how I hate that word "overproduced"... doesn't really make any sense whatsoever! ;)

no doubt. i think people need to realise that each respected artist in this business is there for doing their own thing. i believe there's no viable criteria for comparisons nor competition when it comes to art.

Patrick, 'overproduced' is a silly term i agree but there's a certain feel that many fans pick up on when trying to describe certain tracks in Invincible. i personally think Mike was trying too hard with creating unique digital sounds with both Riley and Jerkins. another thing is the overcompression and loudness from the mastering stage, something which surprised me seeing as how much Mike and Sony spent on the project.

Michael's trouble in making music has always been getting musicians, sound engineers, mixers, etc... to create what it is he hears in his head. That's why he takes so long, that's why he works so hard, because he's trying to do precisley what you said, take a song he hears off the top of his head and make it something real, something tangible. Getting that sound in to reality, especially when you don't play instruments or read or write music, at least not when actually creating, can be, I imagine, an extremely difficult process. That's what takes so long with Michael. He's even said that songs certain songs he released weren't what he heard exactly in his mind, but he had to settle because of pressure from the label or whatever. He takes his time because he want's it to be as it is in his head.

Well, he does also use studio equipment (drum machines, etc) to duplicate the sounds that he hears in his head, too.

But yeah, he's not like Prince or something where he's a one-man band lol!! He has to collaborate with other people to bring his ideas to life...like you said this takes time.

i agree with you. i think if you just go with the flow and not over think it, the best really comes out.

LOL, at least you realize it's a silly term! I feel "overproduced" is a term people use when they feel something isn't quite right/to their liking and they can't quite put a finger to it... so voila... it's overproduced... and it makes them sound like they know what they are talking about! LOL :cheeky:

But the whole thing you mention is kinda Michael's dillemma... some want him to be cutting edge and innovative.... and I feel you can only reach that by going digital, by going away from real instruments and create sounds sounds unheard of before and some people want him to make a Off the Wall Part 2 with real instruments... and when he does one thing, people say it's overproduced and when he does the other people say he plays it safe and it's lame! Damned if you do and damned if you don't!

I wouldn't want to be in his position making music!

he's done that extensively before with Bad and, more successfully, with Dangerous.

Stevie done it way before and help make him a legend.

'going digital' can be done in a good manner and a not-so-good way. both can be unique but i feel Mike just didn't hit it (i think that's also a reason for the overwhelming damnation of the album). it's a shame because during the 2001 web Q&A interview he seemed quite excited with trying out different tweaks to get unique sounds. but those 5-6 tracks were just too industrial for my taste.

Well I do think that when you take too much time to work on something (and by too much time I mean years) it doesn't add to the quality of the album.
I think that because when you look back at albums over the years (and especially the ones that are named 'timeless' and are remembered even to this day) they never took years to be made. So that shows that you don't have to work so long on songs to make them 'perfect'
I think Michael should just enjoy making music again and not worry about is it perfect enough? Cause when you can hear that the artist actually liked making the album it gives it a great vibe already imo.

yeah he tends to think too much on it IMO. alot of it has to do with the standards that he set which ain't never gonna be matched, but also of the High quality and sometimes while you always think about a Benchmark album you have to just go with the flow and let nature take it's course.

i think because he takes so much time in between releases and also because of him working with who is hot at the moment and by the time the project comes out it sounds dated, not saying his stuff but the Producer of momen the works with.

i think in this day and age he can do and release whatever he wants and nowdays his Genius is well placed in stone so musically he can just let his hair down and not dwell on it.
