Hey guys, this is my first thread on mjjcom since moving from mjnewsonline. I was just wondering if anyone has the source that has will.i.am saying that the new album will sound like Off The Wall for todays generation as i have seen it quoted alot but i have never actualy seen proof myself except for in wiki which we all know is not a reliable source, can anyone confirm if this is true or have a source to prove it or does anyone know if this was just made up. Mods plz move this if you think it needs moving.

I don't know if there is an exact quote but Will.i.am refers to it conceptually in the Access Hollywood report that Billy Bush makes with Will.i.am and Michael from the studio in Scotland. I think that is where it originated. Maybe someone here has time to find you the link to it.

Jerkins said a similar thing before Vince was released and look how that turned out - nothing at all like OTW

Not at all. I happen to like Invincible very much and am proud of the way MJ takes different route with his albums. I think it is such a shame that fans talk down such a beautiful album. With fans like these, who needs tabloids. You know what's funny, some of my most suffisticated nieces , when they come to my house, they always ask for music from the Invinsible album, never any others, The young teenagers love invincibe, esp Butterflies.

Mj should not be asked to reproduce Off the Wall. He has done it already. He has everyone in the industry chasing after it. Why reinvent the wheel.
He needs to grow and explore. At his stage now, he shouldn,t be chasing his tail. He has already laid the foundation for every other artist to follow. He needs to make music for himself now. He has earned it. If fans want to follow him where he goes, then all are welcome, if not, let them go to the next person who want to do off the wall. Personally, if I want OTW, I put on off the wall. End of story.

All Michael said is that he wants music with "great melodies." In an interview conducted with Rolling Stone in November/December 2006 and published in the February 8, 2007 issue, will.i.am commented that: "I want it to sound like Off the Wall for today. Right now, though, dude is still killing everybody vocally." These thoughts were also echoed during the Access Hollywood interview which aired at the beginning of November 2006.

it would really be something to hear his pure voice again- Michael singing- really singing like he did when he was with his brothers.

thanks so much. you got the interview where will.i.am talks about "using real instruments" and this being "the best music you will have heard in a long time" or something along these lines?

there are some interview on youtume try to check there. :)

booo all this OTW for today crap lol. It STILL probably wont sound like OTW for today cuz OTW was in the past! That kills MJ creatively. MJ should be going forward, not backwards.

Hell I'd love for MJ to make Dangerous 2008, new jack swing throw backs and all, but again, thats looking backwards instead of forwards...experimenting and innovating like MJ always does requires NOT trying to recreate something he did years ago.

I think when people hear the OTW reference they automatically think about the types of songs on that album and think of it as a step back. I don't sincerely believe Will, MJ or anyone wants to recreate those songs, per se. I interpret the OTW reference in terms of "feel" and "vibe". The album had a certain vibe that few have captured in bits and pieces (Ne-yo, Usher and even JT to name a few) but none have been able to do it in total. I think the closest person to recreate the vibe of OTW was Justin Timberlake's first album Justified. And that album was very successful. Most of those songs could have easily been sung by Michael, making them 10 times better, imo.

I think it's possible for Michael to make modern and/or innovative music with the vibe of something from the past. Alicia Keys does it very well...oldtime soul music with a modern twist? It feels like yesterday but is very much today and new.

btw...Off the Wall ROCKS!! :punk:Do not fear the Wall.

*runs from thread before I'm pelted with tomatoes*

Will.i.am said 'off the wall' for today in the sence that the music is VERY melodic. It has a strong rhythem. He's said that the sound that Michael is making will either make a big impact or be ignored because it's different then the music out right now. Michael is a risk taker.

hopefully it won't be ignored

I think the difference between new jack swing and some of the songs on OTW is that new jack swing had a distinct sound that pigeon-holes it to a certain time, whereas you can play certain songs from OTW as well as Dangerous (those without the new jack sound) and they would still sound fresh and unbound by the year they came out. They're timeless. It's easy to see that when Michael's music from days past gets repeatedly sampled in current music. And those songs become hits.

^ It wont.. Don't worry.. Michael cannot be ignored even when he wants to.. :)

Yes, feel-good melodic music. I'd guess the innovativeness might come in the form of some new types of beats underneath those melodies? All I know is I can't wait to hear it, whatever it is. Patiently waiting. :D

couldn't agree more, well said :):):)

He's not reproducing anything.. Will.i.am said they are feel good dance tracks with a strong melodic feel.. That is the simularity to Off The Wall.

That does not mean re-create. Will.i.am also said that he wants to move on. That Michael does not want to focus on what he's been through and wants to just make great music..

Also listen to the instramentals that Will.i.am introduced to Michael as he says 'Livin Off The Wall, them kinda strings'. It does not sound anything like Off The Wall. (No Mike did not use those instramentals, I know) But the OFF THE WALL term is used for freely, not litaraly.

well MJ has always made melodic songs, that's what he's known for. It's not like he stopped making melodic songs and has to 'get back' to that.

They need to stop saying that "Off the Wall" for today stuff and just do something great without referring back to a past album, JMHO.

On invincible's fast songs there was no melody whatsoever, just a bunch of noise and sound effects

Well yeah most of the album was overproduced, however I do think "You Rock My World" had a great melody and was a step in the right direction. If MJ can come up with something like that for the new album, except even better, then he should be alright.

Lets not jump the gun here. We don't know what the album will sound like so it's not fair to go making assumptions. No one here know's if the new album will sound like a modern day OTW or whatever, so I really don't see the need for complaining about something no one has even heard. Pretty pointless if you ask me.
