Thriller Musical, Lyric Theatre, London
Is it a musical? Is it just a juke-box compilation show? Do we expect narrative complexity in our new musical theatre? Is there a life for pop music within the proscenium arch beyond Mamma Mia!? Or shall we resort to revivals of Sondheim and hope for the best from Andrew Lloyd Webber? All of these thoughts go racing through your mind – well, actually, they don't – when sitting through this immensely enjoyable compilation of the Michael Jackson catalogue. Somehow Jackson, and his sibling quintet, passed me by, as they happened, but now I'm suddenly all grooved up on the Jackson Five and the high points of Michael's best-selling discs. This is great stuff.
It makes you want to move around in your seat. I did do that and nearly got arrested for moving around in the seat right next to me. Not my fault. We had to get up and get down in an audience participation re-tread of "Shake Your Body", and some of us did. Others resisted. One irate critic even berated the great Tito Jackson (the bass player) for turning up late at his own show. What else was he supposed to do? We thought Janet might show, but she didn't. We made do instead with a whole host of television celebs, Vanessa Feltz as well as Girls Aloud and actors from Hollyoaks. And then we all had to join in a number called "Get On the Floor". Enough said. It's a shame that Gary Lloyd's production has no theatrical justification whatsoever, but the presentation is so enjoyably theatrical that the objection disintegrates. There's a wonderful catalogue of late Motown, blues and early indie rock that covers a whole era of pop music at its best.
It's all laid down with tremendous funk and fusion of lights, sound and dance moves. The onstage musicians under John Maher supply great backing for the company numbers and the fantastic solo contributions of Ricko Baird as the "Thriller" doppelgänger, Ben Foster and John Moabi as the Jackson singers, Denise Pearson as the soul mamma of Motown, and cute Kieran Alleyne as the sly, devilish little *****. There's an excruciating speech towards the end invoking JFK, Nelson Mandela and Barack Obama. This is followed by an "Earth Song" with everyone dressed in white. The show is worth seeing all the same.

Last year producers held open auditions to find a young actor to play the musical legend on stage. Tito, who said he was "very excited" about seeing the show, signed autographs outside the Lyric Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue. He had to be black or mixed race boy with "an excellent unbroken pop/rock voice with a high range". Singers were required to perform Ben, I Want You Back, or I'll Be There. The show has already been seen in Germany, Holland and Scandinavia and travelled on three UK tours. The Jackson 5 The Jackson 5 had hits with ABC and I Want You Back Michael Jackson himself is not involved in the musical, but Sony, which owns his back catalogue, is supporting the show. There has been speculation that The Jackson 5, who last performed together in 2001, will be reuniting next year with the former King of Pop among them. However, the 50-year-old star, best known for hits such as Bad and Smooth Criminal, has denied the rumours. Last month he issued a statement, that said he "no plans to record or tour" with his siblings.

LaToya told fellow contestants on UK reality TV series 'Celebrity Big Brother': "Michael still owns Neverland. He hasn't been there in about six years - not since the trial. "He says he never wants to see it again. He doesn't want to be there. The memories are so awful." Last November, following a series of refinancing loans, 50-year-old Michael transferred ownership of Neverland to Scamore Valley Ranch Company LLC. The company is a joint venture between Michael - represented by attorney L. Londell McMillan - and an affiliate of billionaire Thomas Barrack's investment company, Colony Capital LLC. Only hours after kicking off the Australian leg of his "HIStory" World Tour on November 14, 1996 Michael married Debbie Rowe in a civil ceremony in his presidential suite at the Sheraton-on-the-Park Hotel in Sydney. Michael's gold costume was designed by Gianni Versace who already designed some clothes for Michael for his "Dangerous" tour. Michael's two "HIStory" concerts in Munich, Germany on July 4 + 6, 1997 at Olympic Stadium were recorded. The concert [containing footage of both shows] was televised by German TV-channel SAT. 1 and later in many other countries.
There were 160 people working on the Michael Jackson "HIStory" World Tour. In every city another 200 professional stage hands and 200 security officers are hired locally. The logistics for such a huge show require an almost military-style organisation! In any given week, three different stages are either up, going up or coming down. Moving the custom designed steel and scaffolding requires 7 trucks per stage each weighing 200 tons which takes 3 days to build, 24 hour to set up the elements of the show [backline, lights, sound, band gear, pyro, video] and 24 hours to de-rig. Once built, the set weighs 550 tons. A further 22 trucks carry the backline, sound, lights, rigging, video, pyrotechnics and band gear. That's a total of 43 trucks carrying 1'200 tons of equipment!
Michael wanted a theatrical look to this show, while maintaining the technology of the 90's, so the lighting is made up of the latest in technological advancements but the lights hang in a traditionally theatrical way. The lighting is designed specifically to give a very white light. Most theatrical lighting is warm or yellowish by comparison, on this set the light is 'daylight level' or 5600 degrees kelvin."
