11th Feb, 2008: MJ News and Mentionings

Ok peeps as mello1 and LJ have already stated, please stick to the topic on this thread (news topics). If you want to discuss Grammy's there is a thread for that. For those who are disappointed about MJ not showing up or performing honestly there is nothing anyone can do about that. MJ never said that he was going to be there or perform so no need to bash him.

As for those that believe that MJ is over/should retire etc frankly if that's how someone really feels about MJ then find another artist that fits your expectations etc. No need to disrespect MJ and/or his fans. Please also read the forum rules on these matters.

Thanx for the news L.J. :flowers:

Thanks for the news( the NEWS that is....):)

Just wanted to mention that my fav music program celebrated Thriller 25 today, great comments and showed clips from the videos, mentioned Michael as the true legend he is, and all in all a very, very good thing to watch.
This is a fairly "serious" program, focusing on both mainstream and less known artists, movies, art, books etc.....( and not one that is possible to buy promotion in, its a commercial free channel;))
There was two very well known music critics, both Michael fans ( one had met him when he was in Oslo in 92).
Me happy!!:D Very good promotion................

Cher mentions MJ:

http://www.accesshollywood.com/article/8360/More-With-Cher:-Singer-Talks-Looking-Hot-At-61/

"What is your memory of having Michael on the 'Sonny and Cher Show?'" Billy asked.

"He was just this little sweet boy, very timid," she said.

"Did you think when looking at him, 'This guy could have the biggest selling album of all time?'" Billy asked.

"I didn't think about it but he so talented I mean it didn't surprise me," she said.

Thanks TSCM. I like Cher, even though she talked smack before, she's since made up for it by saying nice things about Michael. She said she knew he was innocent when the trial ended, etc... And she's super talented, so I don't hold what she said too much against her. Maybe she was just having a bad day, lol.

In the article on the first page it says: 'Akon goes out on a limb with "Wanna Be Startin' Something," with light-fingered faux-vibraphone runs and the addition of a new vocal track from Jackson'.

Can somebody confirm that this are really new vocals by michael starting at 1.43 minute?

If they are, I don't like them so much. Akon's voice sounds better than MJ's. :( I thought they used MJ's vocals for the demo he did for this song.

Akon's voice sounds better then Michael's? Come on! lol, yeah, they're new, and Michael's voice sounds amazing. He hasn't lost any of that youthful quality. He's in his vocal prime, his voice is tops.

Well I think his voice sounds like an old demo, it doesn't fit with the rest of the song at least, but maybe that's because michael only sings like 5 seconds.

The vocals on Wannabestartingsomethin 2008 are new as well as some on For all time!

Most of the music I buy is very old. I hardly ever buy new music and I am usually disappointed in new music, so yes. I play old music, from 50's through to 80's. I love the 70's music very much. So yes. I do listen to MJ more now and I work to classical music.:D

I didn't mean "new" like "modern" or something like that. I meant something that's new for you. So the old can be new if you hear it for the first time but it's stupid to listen like 30-50 same songs year after year and find nothing you have not heard before. But I'd like to hear that from Michael because then technically NO ONE has heard it before. I like to see also other people's reactions and reviews and things like that, how Michael moves the world. He doesn't move it with 25 year old songs anymore.

Yeah I saw that aswell! It was awesome, I sat with a grin on my face during the whole thing. [Quickly changed the channel after though,]

Songs are not outdated until they are forgotten. I didn't say anything about "outdating".. But not any album's songs sound the same after you have listened them 1000 times. So in your mind they are outdated even thou they would be classics all over the world. That's why you need music that's new to you.

oh, btw thanks for the news. L.J love you. :flowers:

aww welcome :)

funny how I went to bed... and then I woke up and was like  my news thread is really long!! everyone must like my news  oooorrr MJ did something whilst I was asleep!!

Gloved one memories

some childhood memories grow foggy with time, but the impact of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” cuts through the haze like a switchblade.
When the title single was released in 1984, I was 4 years old - an impressionable child of the newfound MTV generation.
The debut of the “Thriller” video was a family event, and Michael had me hypnotized with his slick moves and dancing zombie army.

For my fifth birthday, I received my very own silver boombox and a cassette copy of the album. Little did my parents know what they had started.
I went through at least five copies of the tape due to my incessant playing of “Billie Jean” and “Beat It.” My parents became experts at manually winding the tape back after I had mangled it from overuse.
But it wasn’t enough for me just to listen or watch Jackson perform his hits. I, too, wanted to moonwalk, spin and lead a group of neighborhood toughs - or better, the undead - in an epic dance display. I held private recitals in the living room for my grandfather, who would patiently watch as I flailed my arms and legs to an abstract beat of my own creation.
If I had only been a few years older perhaps my efforts would have mirrored Jennifer Garner’s “Thriller” dance scene in “13 Going on 30” or the Filipino inmates moving en masse on YouTube.
As time went on, I just couldn’t shake my “Thriller” obsession.
A grade school friend shared my love of Jackson’s macabre masterpiece, and we habitually watched a VHS tape of “Thriller” whenever we were together.
By now my daily regime of “Thriller” has subsided. But, true confession, I still bust out a few joyful moves when one of those iconic songs is on the jukebox or played at a friend’s wedding. To this day, nothing compares to the magic of that album. After 25 years, “Thriller” is still thrilling.

CD Review: Thriller 25, by Michael Jackson

Why mess with a good thing? Really.
Michael Jackson's Thriller is one of the biggest albums in music history. It spent 37 weeks at No. 1. It's sold more than 104 million copies around the world. It won seven Grammy Awards. And seven of the nine songs on the album reached the Top 10.

So you have to wonder who thought it would be a good idea to enlist will.i.am, Fergie, Akon and Kanye West to put their sticky fingers into the mix and "update" songs that have stood the test of time very well on their own.
This 25th anniversary edition includes all the original, unadulterated songs, plus one previously unreleased Thriller classic and five new versions of songs that really should have just been left alone.
There is nothing about Billie Jean that demands re-interpretation or re-mixing. It is a superb song with dramatic beats and a building tension that make it far more original than the vast majority of the material recorded by the guests on the anniversary edition (with the exception of Kanye West).
The frenetic drums, horns and back-up singers on Wanna Be Startin' Something are more fun to listen to than anything I've heard recently (even if the synths and drum machine are dated).
And Thriller - ah, Thriller. It's the song that inspired 1,500 Filipino inmates to work together and choreograph a dance routine in their orange jumpsuits - the video of which has been viewed nearly 12 million times on YouTube.
Thankfully, no one had the gall to re-interpret the title track.
But will.i.am makes a mess of The Girl is Mine with the addition of dirty drums, some messy guitar and an unbelievably irritating rap refrain of "She mine, she mine, she mine. She like the way I rock."
The Black Eyed Peas co-founder then messed around with P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing). He does the already-weak song no favours by adding some contemporary drums and a few new and sleazy lyrics.
Next up, Akon tackles Wanna Be Startin' Something. It's the best of the five re-mixes, but that's not saying a whole lot. He takes on the lead vocals - trying to imitate or complement Jackson's voice - and adds a fresh-sounding club beat while maintaining the song's original flavour.
Fergie re-doing Beat It sounds like a recording of a Shakira-wannabe singing karaoke to the classic '80s tune. It's terrible.
And Kanye West, who normally does such good work, contributes little more than a deeper bass line and a few of his signature uh unhs to the classic tune, Billie Jean. Maybe he felt guilty tampering with something that didn't need it and held back.
The album's final song is perhaps the biggest reason for checking out the new edition. For All Time is a saccharin - in a sweet '80s kind of way - ballad that was recorded for Thriller. It's a better tune than The Lady in My Life - the forgettable song that rounds out the original - but it didn't make the cut.
I'm happy to have an excuse to put Thriller back on my stereo. I still love the majority of the originals and won't refuse the opportunity to be whisked back to my innocent, jelly-shoe wearing days.
But for the preservation of my high opinion of the original, I wish will.i.am, Fergie, Akon and Kanye had just beat it.

Michael Jackson Thanks Fans in Video
Feb. 11, 2008, 6:30 PM EST
Michael Jackson appeared in a video to thank fans for the success of "Thriller," the landmark record the reclusive singer is marking with a 25th anniversary edition.
Jackson will release the new version of the blockbuster album Tuesday, featuring new collaborations with Kanye West, Akon, Fergie and will.i.am.
"It's hard to believe that 25 years ago Quincy Jones and I embarked on an album named `Thriller,'" Jackson said in a video message to fans released Monday by his record company, Sony-BMG.
It was not immediately clear exactly when Jackson had made the video, or where it was recorded. He also hinted that he's not through recording music.
"There is still much for to come for Michael Jackson," he said. "My passion for music has never stopped. ... It's my hope that `Thriller' continues to live on for each new generation to discover."
Jackson, 49, soared to superstardom after releasing "Thriller" in November 1982. The instant classic spawned the hits "Billie Jean," "Beat It" and — of course — "Thriller," and introduced the moonwalk to legions of fans all around the world.
"To be able to say that `Thriller' still holds the record as the biggest selling album of all time is just mind-blowing. I have you, my fans, throughout the world to thank for this achievement," said Jackson, who has sold more than 750 million albums worldwide.
Jackson — whose previous disc, 2001's "Invincible," failed to produce any "Thriller"-level hits — seemed poised for a career comeback after years of avoiding the spotlight (including a period of self-imposed exile in Bahrain following his acquittal in 2005 on child molestation charges.).

Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' turns 25

BY GLENN GAMBOA |glenn.gamboa@newsday.com February 12, 2008
It should be a no-brainer.

Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the biggest-selling album in music history by reworking several of its best-known hits with today's hottest singers and producers should really be a sure thing.

And it would be - if it didn't involve Michael Jackson.

However, with the high-profile reissue of "Thriller" (Epic) on Tuesday, it appears the King of Pop is ready to recapture his crown, after his acquittal of child molestation charges in 2005 and years of unusual behavior that has eroded his once-mighty fan base.

To attempt this comeback, Jackson has enlisted help from some of today's biggest stars. Kanye West reworked "Billie Jean." Fergie added her vocals to "Beat It." Black Eyed Peas' will.i.am remixed "P.Y.T." and "The Girl Is Mine," replacing Paul McCartney's vocals with his own. And Akon tackled "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" with Jackson, who re-recorded his vocals for the new version. (The "Thriller" reissue also features "For All Time," an outtake from the original album's recording sessions that Jackson recently completed and remixed.)

Stimulating moves

Jackson has also lined up loads of celebrity testimonials to the power of "Thriller" that will be rolled out online in weekly podcasts on iTunes and his Web site (michael jackson.com) for the next 40 weeks starting today. The series will include interviews with everyone fromChris Brown to rapper DMC to choreographers from "So You Think You Can Dance" that will cover how "Thriller" influenced their careers and their personal lives.

"Whether you was a guy or a girl, you were caught up in the Michael Jackson frenzy - period,"Wyclef Jean says in one of them.

Mary J. Blige says in another, "It was 'Billie Jean' that did it. That was the first time you see Michael dance - see Michael, not as the Jackson Five, but as Michael Jackson, dance. Oh my gosh, it was electrifying."

By focusing on "Thriller," music's biggest commercial success, Jackson seems to be hoping fans will remember how much they once liked him. After all, there are an awful lot of people who loved "Thriller."

Originally released on Nov.30, 1982, "Thriller" is the biggest-selling album in the world, with more than 104 million copies sold. (The Eagles' "Greatest Hits" package is the biggest-selling album in America, with sales of more than 29 million, about 2 million more than "Thriller," though that gap could narrow with this release.)

"Thriller" originally spent 37 weeks at No. 1, a total of 80 consecutive weeks in the Top 10. It's also the only album in American history to be the bestselling album for two years. Seven of the album's nine songs hit the Billboard Top 10 - with "Billie Jean" and "Beat It" both reaching No. 1.

At the 1984 Grammys, Jackson landed a record-setting 12 nominations and won a record-setting eight awards, including album of the year for "Thriller" and record of the year for "Beat It."

Beating down the door

Perhaps more important, though, Jackson's work on "Thriller" broke the race barrier on MTV, kicking open the door for African-American artists on the channel. Jackson told Ebony magazine recently that MTV's rejection of his music videos inspired him to make "Thriller" even stronger.

"They said they don't play [black artists]," Jackson said. "It broke my heart, but at the same time it lit something. I was saying to myself, 'I have to do something where they ... I just refuse to be ignored. So yeah, 'Billie Jean,' they said, 'We won't play it.' But when they played it, it set the all-time record. Then they were asking me for everything we had. They were knocking our door down."

Given all the controversies surrounding Jackson in recent years, the music industry isn't exactly knocking his door down at the moment, though that may be changing, with artists inspired by him leading the way.

For years, hip-hop's finest, from Missy Elliott to De La Soul, have given Jackson his props in interviews. One of this year's hottest up-and-coming rappers Rhymefest has even issued an underground mixtape "Man in the Mirror," filled with Rhymefest and friends, includingGhostface Killah and Talib Kweli, rhyming over Jackson's music.

Moonwalking everywhere

Jackson's influence moves beyond hip-hop as well. One of last year's best-received hits, the Grammy-nominated "D.A.N.C.E." from French dance-pop duo Justice was essentially career advice for Jackson. "Do the D.A.N.C.E. ... stick to the B.E.A.T., get ready to ignite," goes the song's chorus. "You were such a P.Y.T., catching all the lights. Just easy asA.B.C., that's how you make it right."

Perhaps Jackson is taking that advice. Though nothing has been announced, there are rumors of a Jackson Five reunion tour this year. There is also talk about a TV special saluting "Thriller," where Jackson will re-enact his classic performance on the "Motown 25" special where he introduced the world to the Moonwalk. And, of course, Jackson has been working on a new album - reportedly with will.i.am, Rodney Jerkins and Ne-Yo, among others - that could be released late this year.

Will all this work? It's hard to predict, but, either way, the answer will become clearer today once the reissued "Thriller" goes on sale.

Nine songs are all it took

in this age of 70-minute CDs and one-hit albums, the accomplishments of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" will be nearly impossible to duplicate, both artistically and commercially.

Nine songs. That's it. And nearly all of them megahits that changed the way popular music sounded.

Here's what each "Thriller" song had to offer:

"Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'." The album's longest song, it was the bridge between the disco of "Off the Wall" and Jackson's new interests, including a bit of world music with the phrase "mamase mamasa mamakosa" from African saxophonist Manu Dibango.

"Baby Be Mine." One of the two songs never released as a single, even though its Stevie Wonder-influenced R&B could certainly have held its own on the charts. It's the closest thing to filler on "Thriller."

"The Girl Is Mine." The duet with Paul McCartney was a watershed cultural moment, an unlikely combination of music's two biggest stars that had to be the album's first single even though it wasn't all that representative of what would follow. The spoken word bit where Jackson says, "I'm a lover, not a fighter," remains as strange sounding today as it did when it first came out.

"Thriller." Forever linked with the most ambitious and most successful video of the time, "Thriller" sounded ambitious, even beforeVincent Price's memorable cameo, as it tried to link scary movie imagery to dance music.

"Beat It." Teaming up with rocker Eddie Van Halen was another surprise up Jackson's sleeve, almost as shocking as the roaring guitar riffs that make up the backbone of this dance pop song. Throw in the iconic West-Side-Story-ish video and it's unstoppable.

"Billie Jean." Though he was already 24 when it was released, "Billie Jean" marked Jackson's entry into songs with more mature themes - in this case, scheming stalkers who use outside forces to hurt his reputation. Its dark theme was offset by the groove that inspired Jackson to perfect "The Moonwalk" dance move.

"Human Nature." With all the emphasis on Jackson's other talents, his singing often gets overlooked. On "Human Nature," it's his delivery that makes the middling ballad, written by Toto's Jeff Porcaro, really take off.

"P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)." Up-tempo and breathy, "P.Y.T." is the inspiration for countless dance pop songs - not just from his sister, Janet, who contributes background vocals on the song, but all the way through to Britney Spears and Rihanna.

"The Lady in My Life." The other song not released as a single, it has held up quite well as a soul ballad, free from the distinctive forward-thinking marks of the rest of the "Thriller" songs.

His moves bust out all over the place

Michael Jackson's extended dance break in the "Thriller" video has turned out to be just as iconic, if not more so, than the album. Movies incorporate the moves into their plot, and homemade videos of people imitating Jackson's dramatic choreography regularly pop up on the YouTube most-viewed list.

Here are some recent favorites:

Jennifer Garner from "13 Going on 30" (2004): Garner's character Jenna saves a boring work party by busting out the "Thriller" moves and corrals a club full of stuffy execs into a big line dance.

The Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center inmates (2007): The warden of the Filipino prison decided to require inmates to perform the "Thriller" dance as a way to make them exercise regularly. The resulting video, which features more than 1,500 inmates performing the dance, became an Internet sensation.

Naomi Campbell and the dancing SoBe Life Water lizards (2008): The theme of this commercial, which debuted at this year's Super Bowl, is, essentially, drinking SoBe Life Water makes you want to do the "Thriller" dance, which Campbell and the computer-generated lizards do.

Cast of "Thriller Live" on the London Tube (2008): To drum up interest in "Thriller Live," a touring revue featuring songs of Michael Jackson and the Jackson Five, cast members pretend to spontaneously break into the "Thriller" routine on a moving train and then return to their seats as if it was unplanned. The stunt (and the commuters' reactions) gets posted on YouTube and draws worldwide attention.

25 'Thriller' facts

Thriller," the biggest-selling album ever, wasn't the only Michael Jackson work released in November 1982. A few weeks before it was set to hit stores, MCA Records released an album of Jackson reading the story of "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial" and performing the original song "Someone in the Dark." The album promotion, which featured posters of Jackson and E.T. looking very friendly, angered CBS Records, which felt it was stealing the thunder from "Thriller." Lawsuits ensued. Both albums ended up winning Grammys the following year.

"Thriller's" phenomenal success led to a breaking down of traditional racial barriers on FM radio at the time. New York's WPLJ, a "white" station, played Jackson's "Beat It" because of Eddie Van Halen's appearance on it. The song caused a wave of protests from some listeners who didn't want "black" music on their station. MTV also had a reputation for favoring white performers at the time, and its heavy rotation of Jackson videos helped alleviate the criticism.

The music video of "Thriller" played in a Westwood theater for one week in 1983 to qualify for an Oscar nomination. It opened for Disney's "Fantasia," much to the dismay of unsuspecting parents.

After the success of the "Thriller" video, a Hollywood production company began serious work on turning "Billie Jean" into a feature film. (In 1985, Helen Slater starred in the teenage drama "The Legend of Billie Jean," although there is no connection.)

In 1984, the National Coalition on Television Violence classified more than half of 200 MTV videos surveyed as too violent, including the videos for Jackson's "Thriller" and "Say, Say, Say." Dr. Thomas Radecki, chairman of the coalition, was quoted as saying, "It's not hard to imagine young viewers after seeing 'Thriller' saying, 'Gee, if Michael Jackson can terrorize his girlfriend, why can't I do it too?' "

Brooke Shields was Jackson's date to the 1984 Grammys, when he won eight awards.

"Thriller" video makeup artist Rick Baker already had an Oscar on his resume. He won the award for best makeup in 1981 -- the first time the award was handed out -- for his work on "An American Werewolf in London."

Baker actually appears in the video: He's the zombie seen stumbling out of the mausoleum.

Dance choreographer Michael Peters also had a role as a zombie in "Thriller," and shared a Tony Award with Michael Bennett for his choreography work on Broadway's "Dreamgirls." Before his death in 1994, he was an advocate of adding a choreography category to the Academy Awards.

Jackson's girlfriend in the video, Ola Ray, was Playboy magazine's Miss June in 1980, telling the publication that her favorite entertainers were "Michael Jackson, Donna Summer, Ben Vereen, Emry Thomas." She also listed her turn-ons as "music, men, dancing and romancing, health and nature" and turnoffs as "waiting for something that never comes."

Just as Van Halen's guitar solo begins in "Beat It," there's a noise that sounds like someone knocking on a door. According to rock 'n' roll myth, the knock is someone walking into Van Halen's studio. Another story claims it's simply the sound of Van Halen knocking on his own guitar.

"Thriller's" opening cut, "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," is also the longest track on the album, clocking in at over six minutes. The radio version, however, is about two minutes shorter.

The movie theater seen in the beginning of the video was also seen in director John Landis' "The Kentucky Fried Movie." The posters seen in the theater are for the movie "Schlock," also directed by Landis.

Jackson's disclaimer at the beginning of the video, in which he discounts any belief in the occult, was prompted by his status as a Jehovah's Witness at the time.

The 1988 movie "Return of the Living Dead Part II" features a zombie dressed as Michael Jackson.

Forrest J. Ackerman, creator of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine, can be seen sitting behind Jackson in the theater at the beginning of the video.

The video that popularized Jackson's "Moonwalk," 1983's "Billie Jean," was directed by Steve Barron, but it may not be the clip he's best known for. That would be the live-action comic book treatment he gave to A-ha's "Take on Me."

The song "Thriller" was originally titled "Starlight."

Producer Quincy Jones wanted "Billie Jean" to be titled "Not My Lover," so people wouldn't think the song was about Billie Jean King.

Real gang members were brought it to be extras in the "Beat It" video.

Although "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' " was one of the biggest singles off "Thriller," no video was ever made for the song.

The man who wrote the song "Thriller," Rod Temperton, also wrote songs for Boyz II Men, Herbie Hancock, Karen Carpenter and Michael McDonald.

The "Thriller" album has sold more than 104 million copies.

At the height of the song's popularity, MTV would run the 14-minute "Thriller" video twice an hour.

25 years later, Jackson's 'Thriller' remains the one to beat

Michael Jackson thrilled the world 25 years ago with Thriller, and he's ready to do it again, this time with help from some friends.
He celebrates the lasting success of his masterpiece with the release today of Thriller 25, an expanded anniversary version of the nine-song original that includes seven bonus tracks. Among them: remakes featuring collaborations with Akon, will.i.am and Fergie, and updated vocals and production by Jackson. Kanye West contributes a remix, Billie Jean 2008. The set closes with For All Time, a song recorded but not finished during the 1982 Thriller sessions.
Also included is a bonus DVD with the Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean videos and Jackson's Emmy-nominated performance of Billie Jean from the NBC special Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever.
The set comes in three versions: one with original cover art, one with a new "zombie" cover and a deluxe edition with a booklet.
Thriller sold more than 27 million copies in the USA, and Jackson earned a record-setting eight Grammys and 12 nominations in 1984. The album transformed pop music with its groundbreaking videos and an unprecedented seven top 10 singles.

Producer Quincy Jones says he's amazed the songs are still club staples.
"I'm astounded by it," Jones says. "I just went around the world — Cambodia, China, Brazil, Africa — and at (midnight), they're playing Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' or Billie Jean. It blows my mind that a record stands up that long."
Fledgling MTV, which until Thriller hadn't played videos by black artists, took off once Billie Jean and Beat It hit the airwaves. "Michael and MTV rode each other to glory," Jones says.
Then came the 14-minute Thriller video. "That defined the standards for video."
Will.i.am, who produced new versions of Beat It, The Girl Is Mine and P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing), says the album inspired him as a youngster.
"It was the first time you saw things that were happening in the ghettos, and kids in the suburbs were copying it," he says. "It was like Broadway fused with street performance, and his wardrobe was fly. He made it possible to be yourself, and be free, and just do you."
The new album is part of a year-long celebration. Legacy Recordings today launches a 40-episode Thrillercast podcast available through iTunes, Zune, RSS and michaeljackson.com, featuring celebrities talking about hearing the original album. Also, XM Satellite Radio will launch a new channel, XM Thriller, dedicated to Jackson's music, which airs in March.

Has any one tried going to the www.michaeljackson.com website? I tried to go on there and it directed me to the Epic main page. Did anyone get that also?

Hmm.... I can't get on the site at all right now. It never loads and I get a "Page not found" message.

Either they are updating the site becuz the CD officially drops in the USA tomorrow, it's been hacked by losers, or the site has temporarily crashed from lots of interest/hits. There's a 4th option but yeah, not going to go there. :ermm:
