The students laughed as they watched a 12-year-old Michael Jackson belt out the lyrics to “I Want You Back” on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Oehler said that performance, and the success of Motown artists, was important in bringing the changes of the civil rights movements to fruition years after segregation was outlawed. “A lot of African American artists had to work very hard to get on TV still in the 1970s. It was hard to break that color barrier on TV,” she said. “And (Jackson’s) just one year older than most of you guys at that point, and yet he’s singing fantastically ... There’s a way we can relate to that, when we see a star on TV who looks like us, we think that anything’s possible. And that meant a lot to African Americans watching at home.”

No one's ever accused me of being a dancer before. The only time I'd ever danced—before going on this show—I ended up in the hospital. I was doing the Michael Jackson dance from "Thiller" when I was 11, spun around and fell face-first on a speaker in my house. I was bleeding between the eyes. Then a 19-year-old private just out of school, the memories of the day he entered Baghdad are etched in his mind.
"It was a shock," said the darkly tanned, smiling-faced Sanchez, who now boasts the rank of staff sergeant and has a squad of 11 troops under his command.
"The birds (helicopters) were blowing up vehicles and buildings as we were walking down the road. The Iraqis were preoccupied with looting. We saw a forklift driving down the road with chandeliers on it. It was a crazy time."
Later, once Iraqis realised Saddam had been toppled, the invading troops were treated as heroes.
