Michael jackson - jackson to be honoured as official american legend

Good job. Res.

Instead of some of you guys poo pooing the idea and spreading all sorts of negativity about it, why don't you sit in front of your computer and send letters to the people that will make this thing happen? The house of reps!

You can't say definitively that it won't happen. You should at least try. Michael would say....

Don't let no body turn ya round.....

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee may have trouble keeping the promise she made at Michael Jackson's public memorial for a House resolution that "forever" honors the late pop star.
Jackson Lee, a Texas Democrat, took the stage Tuesday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and hoisted a framed copy of the resolution, embossed with a gold seal. The measure will be debated on the House floor, she said.
For that framed, embossed resolution to be completely legit, it must first get past some opposition.
Rep. Peter King, a New York Republican who called Jackson a "pervert, child molester, pedophile" in a video he posted on YouTube this week, vowed Tuesday to do "whatever I have to do" to oppose honoring Jackson.
Without mentioning King by name, Jackson Lee noted at the memorial that Michael Jackson was acquitted of child molestation charges. She blasted critics who "don't understand the hearts of entertainers" and "don't know how they heal the world on behalf of America."
"We understand the Constitution. We understand laws and we know people are innocent until proven otherwise. That is what the Constitution stands for," Jackson Lee said, clutching the framed resolution in front of her shiny white suit.
Her legislation, House Resolution 600, lists several charitable acts by Michael Jackson over his long career and proclaims him as an American legend, musical icon and world humanitarian. He is, Jackson Lee said, "someone who will be honored forever and forever and forever and forever and forever."
In the House, non-controversial resolutions honoring a person who has died or carried out a noteworthy accomplishment normally move quickly from committee to the House floor and then pass on a voice vote. The Michael Jackson resolution, introduced June 26, is awaiting action in the House Foreign Affairs Committee, of which Jackson Lee is a member and King is not.
An opponent could ask for a recorded vote, which then requires a two-thirds majority for passage. So far, Jackson Lee's resolution has just one co-sponsor, Rep. Diane Watson, D-Calif.
Jackson Lee hosted a 2004 meeting in her Capitol Hill office that brought Michael Jackson together with ambassadors to the U.S. from African countries. At the time, Jackson was considering a tour to raise money to fight AIDS. However, he was also facing child molestation charges and was unable to leave the country without court permission.
Even so, Jackson was greeted by screams, applause and flashing cameras.
Jackson also visited Iraq veterans at Walter Reed Hospital while in Washington.

Not trying to be negative, just trying to keep it real.

Ok...so if it passes...what happens? Why do you need a bill to honor a person? We already honor him...

If it passes, his children or other family members will be presented with a plaque and it will be made public by the media. Then you will see things like streets and buildings are whatever being named after him. You may see this anyway. But when people are honored by the government, you see it happening more often.

and I won't be surprised if he is nominted again for a Nobel Peace Prize and if a national holiday is not purposed to honor him.... if not here in the US... maybe in another country...

I read that Brazil is making a statue to honor him...that report was in a recent Billboard article.

Correct me if i'm wrong... but if it passes don't americans HAVE to honour him no matter what they think?

I think having such a resolution would also be helpful in trying to promote other memorials (i.e. Neverland as Graceland or some kind of Michael Jackson museum, etc.).It would show that there is popular support, not just a bunch of crazy fans.

Fantastic if it happens, a shame he had to wait until he had died, but whatever happens, he was an American Legend in the hearts of millions worldwide.

Yes, Nobel Peace Prize. I was thinking about that too.

This would be amazing!!!

Michaels Thriller album is already in the Library of Congress Nation Recording Registry...now it is TIME to honor the MAN!!

That Peter King is going DOWN!!..evil bastard

Hardball with Chris Matthews is about to discuss the resolution now. They showed Peter King's video and Sheila Jackson Lee's announcement of her resolution.

She has one co-sponsor. They said it probably make it to the floor. They say it is up to Nancy Pelosi. A house aide said they didn't think it would come to the floor this week or at all. Doesn't look too good.

Here, in Romania, they want to create "Michael's Way" in the biggest park in the capital :) It's a project sponsored by MTV, ProFM, Sony and Nokia. I hope this will be done! (and I have a feeling it will become a meeting place for MJ fans, lol)

He is being honoured all over the world, this bill REALLY should pass!!!!

Many have said it before, but I think many USA politicians are blinded by their jealousy of Michael. They're suppose to be the ones that make a difference and make a change, but here's this pop star who made a bigger difference than they could ever hope to make.

I just wanna ask all these political f*ckheads something:
Were you there in my darkest hour? In my deepest despair? Did you care?
Have you visited children that are sick and dying because you really wanted to give them a moment of peace and rest before they passed from this world?
Do you show compassion to the homeless?
Do you send food out to the voters who work tireless to get you votes?
Do you open your home for the tired, sick, dying, and heart broken without asking anything in return?
Do you truly care what happens to everyone in this world without any thought to yourself and your needs?

The answer to all of those is HELL TO THE F*CKIN NO
Bunch of righteous, stuck up assholes.

I don't see this happening. Congress is mostly "good 'ol boy" types. They would approve someone like John Wayne, but not Mike.

If they'd approve of John Wayne, would they just gloss over the fact that he was a cross dresser? They don't want to come out and say it, but they'd celebrate anyone as long as they're not an extremely famous black man.

:clapping:

One day I pray that these people will grow to appreciate and understand just how important an artist is to world peace. A politician can capture a person's imagination. Can capture their minds and even occasionally tug their hearts. But an artist has the ability to do all that and--more importantly--touch a person's soul.

Politicians just do not understand how detached we are from them and they are making most of our decisions. WE phucking pay for their food, home, and occasional indiscretions. WE would have paid for King's sex change. WE paid for Mr Feelgood to go bang his Argentinian soul mate. WE PAY FOR THAT SHNIT!

And I want a say in who MY country honors. In the 1920s, because of prejudice and ignorance, we drove a beautiful soul out of this country and refuse to honor her humanitarianism and the global impact she had to this day. That was Josephine Baker--the woman who built the bridge for Michael to have global appeal. And now-because of that same ignorance--we are about to phucking do it AGAIN!!!!

I need to go breathe...

Well you have Elvis, who was a Jackie Wilson impersonator. George Washington is a hero when he had a bad record as a general. Columbus "discovered" America when Africans & Chinese came here hundreds of years before him. Americans celebrate stealing land and genocide aka Thanksgiving. But I don't think it's John Wayne's race per se. It's unlikely Ozzy Osbourne, John Lennon, Elton John, Andy Worhol, or Madonna would get approved either.

politicians are disgusting
:(

I would say this to Sheila Lee, let her withdraw it and get people who love Michael to honour Michael and give him the Award.

Let the Black Caucus and NAACP present Michael with that honour.

That would be outstanding to create an award specially for Michael Jackson jointly by NAACP and the Black Caucus as an African American legend.

That has much more punch to it rather than trying to involve haters to honour Michael.
