Jermaine Jackson’s Management Announce Comeback On Day Of Michael Jackson’s Funeral

The "is Jermaine a good guy or a bad guy" convos go around and around. Here are some facts. The song Word to the Badd was one of most vicious verbal attacks that one person has made against another, family member or not. Jermaine knew perfectly well that Michael did not intentionally change his skin-color, but yet attacked him anyway. The jealousy in the song is obvious.

Michael basically begged Jermaine not to release the song, for both their sakes, and they had a confrontation. Contrary to popular mythology, I don't think they actually came to blows over it in the Havenhurst driveway! Jermaine released the song anyway. As Michael had warned him, it torpedoed his career, what there was of it at that time. I believe the song largely destroyed Jermaine's fan-base. Some MJ fans also bought Jermaine records, as a correlary to Michael. Jermaine's career took a nose-dive, after that and Jermaine dropped out of sight.

There is no indication that I've ever seen that Jermaine and Michael reconciled after that. If there is, I surely haven't heard of it. Yes, Jermaine was at the trial. Good for him. He should have been. Michael did the MSG concerts with his brothers (part of it) as a kindness to them, but that was it. Over the years, Jermaine sometimes made noises about a J-5 reunion concert or tour, and Michael then would have to issue a statement denying it. That happened many times.

Jermaine has repeatedy said lately, that he was "Michael's voice and his backbone." NO, he wasn't. Michael had his OWN "voice and backbone."

With that said, and regardless, we must not call Jermaine names on this board. Name-calling and attacks are against the rules of the board, and diminish us as human-beings. We can have opinions, but respect is still the rule here.

Word to the Badd, by Jermaine Jackson

What up yo,
word to the badd
Reconstructed
Been abducted
Don’t know who you are
They may love you
they don’t know you
Lonely superstar
never think about who you love
only think about number one
You forget about where you started from
You only think about what you want
don’t care about how it’s done
you only think about you, your throne
Be it right or be it wrong

It ain’t about your world
It ain’t about the things that you do
If you don’t care, I don’t care
Cause you keep thinkin’ ’bout you
It ain’t about you takin’ my pie
You been takin’ for a long time

If you don’t care, I don’t care
If you keep
Well I ain’t thinkin’ ’bout you
What up yo, word to the badd
Once you were made
You changed your shade
Was your color wrong?

Could not turn back
It’s a known fact
You were too far gone
You know I tried to be there for you
Like a brother I care for you
It didn’t matter you always play me off
You only care about what you want
You don’t care about how it’s done
You only think about you, your throne
Be it right or wrong
It ain’t about your world
It ain’t about the things that you do
If you don’t care, I don’t care
Cause you keep thinkin’ ’bout you
It ain’t about you takin’ my pie
You been takin’ for a long time

If you don’t care, I don’t care
If you keep
Well I ain’t thinkin’ ’bout you
Oh no no, I ain’t thinkin’ ’bout you
Oh no
What up yo, word to the badd
Thinkin’ about that pie that you’ve been takin’ from me
From a brother to another brother hard to believe

Lost and don’t know it yet you still show it
Givin’ seems to be harder than it is to receive
The glass has gotten shady, time to make it clearer,
Clean it up and lets start with the Man in the mirror.
Theres sadness there brother, aint no mistaken it,
Get a grip cause youre not far from breakin it.
Thinkin about the time when we used to be close,
It shouldnt be past tense, cause nobody knows,
What the future may hold, what tomorrow might bring,
Its not guaranteed that youll be spreading your wings
But meanwhile, I continue to smile, cause in the back of my head,
I know you’re still a child

You say that your a man, but that will never be.

An early version of "Word to the Badd!" leaked out and received radio play. It was written in criticism of brother Michael Jackson when the two brothers were on bad terms. The lyrics were rewritten for the album version, making the song about an unnamed former romantic interest instead. (source: wikipedia)

So basically the "diss version" wasn't released intentionally. At least, that's what I'm reading between the lines..

We'll have to disagree on this. Jermaine himself released the song as a single. I know. I was around then, pre-Youtube and "leaks." There was such a huge back-lash against Jermaine when the song was first released, that it was redone for the album.

I stand (slightly) corrected. The song was released to radio stations, but not commecially as a single. I do recall that there was such HUGE negativity toward it that it was reworked for the album. The album was a flop. I think any success Jermaine had had was due to carry-over from MJ fans. That largely ended, to this day, after the Word to the Badd attack.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jermaine_Jackson

In 1991 a pre-commercial release version of his song "Word to the Badd!!" (from the L.A. & Babyface-produced album You Said,) was released to radio stations. In that version he criticized his brother Michael. Michael confronted Jermaine and the two brothers discussed the issue, with Michael asking for the song to be withdrawn from airplay. Jermaine refused, but reworked the lyrics for final release, making the song instead about a former lover. Several other singles were released from this album, which was the second album to appear on the newly-formed LaFace Records label, including "You Said, You Said," and "I Dream, I Dream." However, the album turned out to be a commercial failure. Jermaine was soon dropped from his record label and remains unsigned to any label.

So it might have been leaked to radio stations, not intentionally released. Either way, I can't hate Jermaine. No one knows what happened between them except the brothers themselves. I agree the lyrics are very harsh but people often say mean things when they are in anger but later regret.

I don't recall that there was ever a public apology. Maybe? Anyone? If so, I sure don't remember it!

The song produced a tremendous backlash, that's certain. Jermaine lost his record label and never got another.

I assume you know the meaning of "to leak". And you might have noticed I used a form of possibility in that sentence.

Writing this song was surely a foolish thing to do but you can't nail Jermaine down on this stupid incident forever.

I am 99.99999999% certain it was intentionally released to radio stations all over the country. I'm on the other side of the continent from California, and I heard it here. If a "leak," then really, it was a FLOOD.

We will have to agree-to-disagree, and move on. . . . Some of you are better people than I am, to be able to let this "incident" go? I can't and it forever affected my impression of Jermaine and his character. Events since Michael's death have only confirmed that. I'm sorry, but I just can't get over the immense pain that song must have caused Michael, and he did NOT need that. I NEVER heard any sort of apology from Jermaine, so if the song was released in the heat-of-the-moment, when that moment was over he could have said, "I'm sorry," in a public way? That might have changed people's impressions of Jermaine? If he "regretted it," he never really said. Michael deserved an apology at least as public as the song was. Instead, Jermaine's career went down the toilet. Virtue is as virtue does?

For YEARS, Jermaine tried to pressure Michael into performing with the "J-4" again, by releasing statements about a "come-back" concert or tour. And for YEARS, Michael denied it. Must have made him very weary. The only ones "coming back" would have been "the J-4." Michael never left.

There were two brothers who did Michael very, very wrong, IMHO. But, I've never heard of a hateful word or deed toward Michael from the others. They are all individuals. Some are ok in my eyes, and some are NOT.

Moving right along . . . . .

Vic

:)

It's not easy when you friend fails you.
But, when family member betrays you, it’s very hard.
I know from my own experience…..
You forgive but never forget. It haunts you all you life. That relationship is never the same as used to be.

My dear, actions speak louder than words!

This is TOTALLY correct. It was released.. . not leaked, at the time of the release of Black or White. The play-time went to Black or White. My understanding is that Michael TRIED to tell Jermaine that the release of that hateful song would have the result of trashing Jermaine's career. He didn't listen. Jermaine only had a fan-base because of Michael. When he released that vicious song, his career was over. Look up the definition of karma?

Dunno if Michael and Jermaine had an actual fist-fight in the driveway of Havenhurst? That WAS the rumor at the time. MJ was smaller, but had studied martial arts. Do the math? (I'd kinda like to have been there to have SEEN that, if it happened?)

Carry on,

Vic

yep. mj ensured that if they played word to the b that they could NOT play black or white...which would u chose? mike jack or his brother?

and 'rumor' was mj broke his damn nose...i believe it. wouldn't be the first time

Soso, as you know, there is the "official" and the "unofficial" version of this story. The official version goes, Michael was steamed, drove to Havenhurst HIMSELF (as driver, and he was NOT a good driver. . LOL), and had a "chat" with Jermaine IN the house, with Katherine mediating. She basically failed at that, and Jermaine said he WAS releasing the record. The unofficial version also has Michael driving to the house, and, as observed by neighbors, ejecting himself from his car like a lighting bolt-strike, YELLING. In this unofficial version, he and Jermaine "met" in the driveway of Havenhurst. Michael said ("said?") to Jermaine, "#$%^&*())(*&^%$#l" and they came to blows. Jermaine was bigger, but NOT more determined, and he went DOWN. So much for Michael's mild nature? Ha ha ha ha.

Soso, is that your impression, too?

Carry on,

Vic

lol... glad it's over. glad mj is at peace. wish jermaine could stop chasing a ghost. sit down and mourn his brother. b/c he does love him but priorities and ego's get in the way

I just read about that part in is ex-wife's book. I couldn't believe his nerve :bugeyed the way he treated MJ back in those days! and poor MJ he cried...Latoya said the same things about Jermaine, my opinion on him is now changed completely, I'm just sorry it took me so long to learn these things

Some may despise me after this post but I read ten pages of hate and cannot believe how some of you are so judgmental and well hurtful. It's stunning that Michael didn't teach you all more about love and forgiveness.

Jermaine long made up with Michael and did explain that many many years ago. John Lennon did a song against Paul McCartney who cares. Should the records have come out? Maybe not but artists express themselves through music. Jermaine has done nothing but be loving about Michael since 1993. Once his brothers back was against the wall he was there. All this hate over a song and a fake report.

You really think a book by an ex wife is gonna be true? It was so obviously tabloid, it's a horrid book that makes the Jackson's out to be anti semetic a--holes. I'm sorry but I love the Jacksons and those who don't relize how popular the others were or how much they all mattered simply have not studied the Jacksons pre Thriller. I love Jermaine despite his failings and you know what Michael (who was a very good man) made bad choices too. Of course not anything criminal, but still bad choices. Michael and all his brothers have my admiration as artists and as people. I bet all these Jermaine haters never even listened to one of his fine albums and maybe not even to an original J5 one.

I like jermaine too but that doesn't take away the fact that he was a jerk to his brother and jealous as hell. yes he had a good voice what does that have to do with his character? the moment he realized he has no career he never stopped bugging MJ about a "reunion" driving him insane for the last 10-15 years. he's flat broke now and can't even take care of his own kids that tells you a lot about what he achieved in life
