MJ was a Sex God -- While Media Pretends Not to Notice

Michael was very sensual, and when he danced...so hot...so press is just stupid-platonic?Michael always asked to be respected and loved, but let's not ignore that he was sexy and sweet in the same time-VERY NICE COMBINATION!

Agreed! I am 27 and I think Michael is the sexiest man I've ever laid my eyes on! I mean damn! even when I was 3 years old I was so mesmerized by him... he's just got "it".

I'm 22 and when I was 4 I put my eyes on him for the first time (as I can remember) and I thought he was beautiful really. It was during Black or White video world premiere. He seemed so powerful and confident - these are attributes of sexiness.

I agree.
Before, around the 80's and early 90's, did magazines do that sort of "the sexiest" lists?. If they did, did they include Michael?.

I have a little treat for you guys!
Here are the scans of a Brazillian teen magazine from the early 90's. Actually, the mag is from 1993, when Michael toured here with his Dangerous Tour.

Right on the cover Michael is placed among the "Hotties" (= Gatos).

querida93_capa.jpg

The article about Michael starts like this:

"Black or White - We don't care! We want more than Michael's voice!"

querida93_2.jpg

In the red box in the bottom of the page it says that Querida magazine did a research to find out why MJ thrilled his fans so much and concludes: "It's proved: it's much more than music, the fans drools over the megastar singular moves."

And when we turn the page we have an ranking interesting ranking:

querida93.jpg

Clockwise:> The first text on the left top corner says: "Talk about Michael's intimacy! That's girls' #1 fantasy! And they make an observation: 'It has to be at MJ's mansion, of course!"

Second Text: "In the second place, one of his trademark moves, shaking his head" Sorry but I can't translate this really well, but this is the head move he does repeatedly on Dirty Diana video.

Third text: "The wizard of Pop's booty - The super sexy hip moves conquered third place in our reaserch."

Fourth Text: "The voice is great but gets way behind those little 'Aows' he does on stage. They get fourth place in the fans opinion."

Fifth Text: "Everything he sings becomes a hit. But the song Black or White is michaelmaniacs favorite."

Sixth text: "Ooohh! Whe he thrusts. That's the idol's best performance chosen by the majority of girls."

Seventh text: "Now, the biggest dream of all fans is to dance with him, anywhere: on the street, on the moon, at the concert, with a lot of power"

ps. If there's another Brazillian fan on this thread, please help me improve this translation. I had to left out a lot of slangs. Lol

As a post-postscriptum i'm gonna add this scan here: an advertisement of the concert. It was annouced as the Concert of The Century!

Ani_geleia, you are AWESOME! For the scans, the translation, everything!

I knew that SOMEWHERE, sometime, in print there HAD to be more recognition that Michael Jackson's appeal included breathtaking sexual charisma!

To folks new to this thread, we're discussing how the "Prevailing Media Narrative" about MJ, in order to perpetuate their mythical image of MJ, omitted any references to his sex appeal. It's an underappreciated angle of the poor journalism on MJ.

You'll still see this today in their coverage of This Is It -- they'll rave about how wonderful it is... and carefully not mention his Billie Jean performance. And we all know why... :) I've found ONE reference in TII reviews to his sexiness. One. If you find more... drop us a link!

We're also interested in seeing examples of where the media DID acknowledge this. (Plus it's fun!) How was this handled internationally? How did it change over the years?

If you've got examples stowed in a box somewhere, dig 'em out! Give us links if you see anything online!

AMAzing, ani_geleia... too cool :clapping:

I don't know if this was posted, but this person kind of says it.

If you haven't seen the documentary, here's some advice in viewing it: don't look away. Even the most informed Jackson devotee thinks they are mesmerized simply by the man's trademark gestures--the kicks, spins and moonwalk emulated by a multitude of Jackson impersonators--when they are actually seduced by Jackson's entrancing subtlety.
It's the instinctive physical attitude and sexy rhythm that occurs in the nanosecond when Jackson's body is on its way from one show-stopping move to the next; the stuff you'll miss if you blink (or as I did during “This Is It,” try to take notes). Indeed, it is his funky subtlety that turns impassioned, joyful, physical expression into sheer magic, and during “This Is It,” many of the film's best moments are Jackson's sublime subtlety--the kind of groovy mini moves that had Jackson fans taping his televised performances over the years so they could relish the man's swaggering mettle over and again.

This was fantastic!

It's posted upthread, so sadly it doesn't affect our grand total of f*ckin' two (did I say one before? Obviously I can't count; I've posted two stories).

(In this thread I curse a little more. I need somewhere to vent! Plus it's a racier thread, probably should have a PG rating in the title. Hope it's oK with folks. I don't think we've ventured into R territory yet, but you never know... )

Bummer. I'll keep looking and post as I find.

Ok, This person likes Michael from the past but still notices his sexuality.

http://www.boston.com/ae/music/articles/2009/07/02/before_mtv_jackson8217s_style_was_pure_seduction/

Michael Jackson once leaned against a lamppost, and the lamppost, doing the only sensible thing a lamppost should do upon contact with a megastar, lit up. So did the pavement when kissed by the soles of his wingtip shoes. In hindsight, the only word for this is sex. But I was 7. And at 7, you don’t know why you respond to something. You just do. Billie Jean was not Jackson’s lover, but Jackson was the most seductive man alive.

...
With kaleidoscopic action projected behind him, he looks so happy, a fact that is compounded once one Jackson becomes a synchronized three. By today’s standards, this is public-access stuff, but of the most seductive caliber. He’s. Dancing. Just. For. Me.
...
Watching him in both videos is all the more poignant knowing that by 1987 he would be all grabby, staccato gyrations. Jackson never danced with quite the same unshowy fluidity or teasing seduction. When this man says we can ride that boogie, no is not an option.

And this one that I have seen in other threads:

http://www.latimes.com/features/image/la-ig-diary1-2009nov01,0,1286606.story

The morning of the film's premiere, Bergman pulled out snapshots of Jackson trying on clothes at his house, and called him her "supermodel" because he fit into anything, including women's clothes. She emphasized his sex appeal ("He's sooooooo sexxxy!"), which comes into focus in the film for the first time in a long time, despite Jackson's surgerized face.

The Boston.com story by Wesley Morris -- a great find! Interesting that both this and the euroweb story were written by black men, who I think are both heterosexual, but they don't really say. I think black men are particularly angry at MJ's treatment and feel especially motivated to point out what we're saying here.

So that makes THREE for This Is It. Not four, I'm afraid. You've found the other of the two I'd already posted. -_-

I picked up on that as well. I kept looking at their names and they definitely sounded male to me. Didn't know they were black though.:D

Sorry...Well, I'll keep chugging along. I found one that talked about MJ as being their first crush and an interracial one at that. But all they mentioned in terms of sexuality is that Mike used "sensual words" in the movie. I think I threw the article out. I will have to find that link again.

Ani_geleia: THANK YOU for posting those scans, they're amazing! I immediately saved them to my computer. I'm thinking of writing about gender & sex in the media for an independent study and using MJ as my subject, and I have been looking for examples of his appeal in Latin America so this is fantastic! Yay!

Was this posted?
I was reading this GQ article online and a couple of parts were interesting to me:

"....Or to hear him tell less prepackaged anecdotes, such as the one about a beautiful black girl who froze in the aisle and pissed all down her legs after spotting him on a plane, or the blond girl who kissed him in an airport and, when he didn't respond, asked, "What's wrong, you fag?" He grows tired of reminding people, "There's a reason why I was created male. I'm not a girl." He leaves the reason unspoken."

"Michael is sweaty and strutting. "Thank you.… Oh, you're beautiful.… Thank you," he says, almost slurring with sexiness. You can tell he's worked out all his nerves on the Jackson 5 songs. Now he owns the space as if it were the inside of his cage. Millions upon millions of eyes."

(This one is totally unrelated to the issue at hand, but I just thought it was so touching I had to post it: "He sings and beatboxes the little things he hears, the parts. Where do they come from? Above. He claims to drop to his knees and thank Jehovah after he snatches one. His voice coach tells the story of Michael one day raising his hands in the air during practice and starting to mutter. The coach, Seth Riggs, decides to leave him alone. When he comes back half an hour later, it's to Michael whispering, "Thank you for my talent.")

Here's the full article:
http://www.gq.com/entertainment/cel...-john-jeremiah-sullivan-tribute?currentPage=1

Be warned, it's not all niceties and there's some tabloid rumor nestled in there too...

I actually saw this magazine in the store, but the title was "When Michael Was Cool", and as soon as I read that I dropped it and walked away annoyed, hah.

Anyway, just something a little different at least.
It really is a challenge to find any published articles that even allude to his sex appeal.

Re: MJ is Hot Stuff!

They probably do assume it ended after thriller... But actually, from what I've observed, it's the post thriller era that most women seem to be attracted to! and not so much the thriller era itself.

I mean the fans just seemed to go crazier and crazier for him as the years went by.

Nivea,
You are quite correct. I think that many young people seem to focus on the media or Hollywood's version of what sexy is. I've watched many videos and tapes of Michael from his teenage years to his mature adulthood. He had different variations of sexy. But I find that he was at his most sexy in the later part of his adulthood. You had a man that was more self-assured. He was very intelligent and cultured. MJ was so creative and talented. He knew just how to say or do the right things that drove women wild! I love the fact that he still had the shy, childlike quality but still was this mature sexy adult man. He had great respect for women, especially his mother, which is sorely lackly in a lot of men today. Here was a man who loved and adored his children with all his heart. All those things make a man sexy, not merely just his physical appearance. HE WAS AND WILL ALWAYS BE THE KING OF "POP". I leave the quotes to interpretation! LOL

I'd read that article, but must have thrown it down before I saw the part about "slurring with sexiness." I'll never forget that phrase, and have vowed to slur with sexiness at least once this weekend.

I think your topic is going to make you famous. OK, well, it will definitely get you some credit hours, then a refereed journal article, then a few magazine interviews. May I ask... is this thread your inspiration? I'd be so touched... Come one folks, let's help her with her research...

AMEN! AMEN! All different variations of sexy...And what the man could do for a pair of reading glasses is insane!

lol!

See what we're sayin' here? MATURITY is sexy. He was a kid at times... he was mature at times. These millions of people could NOT have found him so sexy if he were a child sexually...

I'm with ya'll -- my feelings about him were sisterly until after Thriller and then... not so much...

I don't know if I ever thought of him in a sisterly manner. Admittedly, my thoughts were rather pure in my youth...but as I got older, purity took a hike!

Haha, yes I liked that phrasing. Pretty accurate.
In another part of that article he describes Michael's voice as "purring".

To answer your question, it's something that I've been really thinking about since about July, but this thread really inspired me! So thanks for that. :)

Also, about the reading glasses - YES.

It's funny, watching Moonwalker as a little girl I used to wish he was my best friend or big brother because he was so brave and kind caring for those kinds in the film......but yeah, then I saw the panther dance sequence of "Black or White" years later and any sisterly feelings I might have had before were HISTORY.

And Thanks for the excerpts of GQ magazine. Now I'm gonnna read the whole article, because the tittle kinda let me down.

I was thinking about something else on this matter. I think people nowadays confund vulgarity with sexiness. You see women showing off their huge boobs and men exercising their muscles and forgetting to exercise their manners.
It's a misunderstanding of the word 'sexy', I guess. It doesn't mean showing off a well sculpted body or making sexual gestures. It's something beyond that. i think these clichés to make someone look sexy is just ACTING sexy, nor BEING sexy.

I agree very much. But... how does crotch-grabbing fit into this? :)

You'll still see this today in their coverage of This Is It -- they'll rave about how wonderful it is... and carefully not mention his Billie Jean performance. And we all know why... :) I've found ONE reference in TII reviews to his sexiness. One. If you find more... drop us a link!

this Billie Jean ... this Billie Jean made me :swoon::woohoo::wub: :blushing:

Michael Jackson is SEXY! people may say whatever they want, but he has this sexual charisma that not many has. He doesn't have to walk undressed or does provocative videos to be sexy. and well sometimes he does things --- that made you :stretcher

actually looking so innocent works only for him.

I agree very much. But... how does crotch-grabbing fit into this? :)

I don't think crotch-grabbing is always a sexual gesture. At least, it's not a cliché sexual gesture. Maybe it's just my opinion, but I don't see Billie Jean performance as sexy or maybe I got used to MJ's crotch-grabbing. Haha NOT. I didn't get used to it. I mean, Black or White's panther sequence or Come Together or Dangerous speak for themselves.

However, on Bad short film it is a challenge to the viewer. He starts 'Your butt is mine' (Who on Earth starts a song like this?!) and then he goes 'Gonna tell you right / Just show your face in broad daylight' and immediately grabs his crotch. To me it is the same as asking 'Are you a man or not?' (Ok, this is sexy. You caught me. :S)

But then like I said before, sexiness is all about confidence and when Michael performs he breathes confidence. :D
