Photos from a photoshoot by Reggie Garcia in Mar 1978 are apparently included:

Reggie Garcia's work as a freelance photographer in Hollywood durng the 1970s brought some very interesting days for the college student, but none more rewarding than the day he spent with Michael Jackson. Garcia got the call of a lifetime to photograph Michael Jackson and his brothers during a video shoot at Sunset Gower Studios in March 1978.

He's now sharing 13 of his remarkable images in a book he titled "My Day With Michael Jackson." Most of Garcia's photos are black and white, but he did use color film for some photos. Some of the images captured Michael with brothers Marlon, Tito, Randy and Jackie. The Jacksons were in the middle of their "Goin' Places" tour at the time.

Garcia took advantage of downtime during the video shoot to photograph Michael alone on black and white film. Several remarkable frames are of Michael sitting in a director's chair near large mirrors that Garcia knew would help create memorable images.

One striking photograph is of Michael Jackson standing in front of a large wardrobe mirror nearly a decade before he recorded "Man in the Mirror."

Garcia's camera captured a 19-year-old Michael Jackson in 1978, just before his stardom would grow exponentially. Michael would soon perform as the Scarecrow in "The Wiz" film, where he would meet producer Quincy Jones.

Jones, who would produce three huge albums for him, starting the next year with "Off The Wall."

Michael Jackson was an easy subject to work with, Reggie Garcia says about his day photographing the singer. Garcia asked Jackson to pose as he was reading a break-up letter while he snapped away. The result is a remarkable series of images of Michael just before his career began another phase with his "Off The Wall" album.

Director Spike Lee will use several of Garcia's photos to illustrate his documentary "Michael Jackson's Journey from Motown to Off the Wall," which premieres January 2016 at the Sundance Film Festival.

A Day With Michael Jackson
Paperback – November 27, 2015
by Reginald Garcia (Author)

Reginald Garcia had a special day in 1978 when he had the opportunity to meet, in person, Michael Jackson, the King of Pop. This book are Reggie's reflections - through the written word and the lens of his camera - of meeting such a wonderful, caring, and considerate man. His experience, best captured through the musings and the photos that follow, give insight into a day in the life of Michael Jackson. These pictures are a remembrance of one of the greatest performers the world has ever known. The author spent the entire day shooting pictures on-stage, in the dressing room, with and without the Jackson brothers. Michael was only 19 years old at the time. So 3 photos in book never published, 1 B/W (Cover) and 2 Color. Spike Lee put 5 of the B/W photos from the book into his documentary "Michael Jackson's Journey from Motown To Off The Wall" and will be at the Sundance Film Festival Jan. 15, 2016 what an honor. Photo's 8.5 x 11 size, a must see.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Gorgeous pic of Michael!

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

So it seems it has the Estate's full support.

This nor Bad25 could be made without the support of the Estate and Sony. The documentaries rely heavily on Michael's likeness and music. Lee has publicly said he was allowed access to footage by the Estate. No surprise here.

Hopefully extras will be allowed on the OTW DVD and it will be sold appropriately to the public.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

He looks pretty happy to be reading a "break up" letter. Did somebody just break up with him or Was he the one breaking up with somebody??

From the estate about OTT

Hello MJFAM:

We know that for months, you have been waiting patiently for official news about the new documentary about Michael Jackson directed by Spike Lee.

The announcement that you have been waiting for is coming today but you are the first to know! We’re happy to share with you that on February 26, the Estate of Michael Jackson and Sony Legacy Recordings will release a special CD/DVD and CD/Blu-ray edition of Off The Wall. The package will include Michael’s revolutionary album in its original form and the new documentary Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall, directed by Spike Lee. Furthermore, the documentary will make its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2016, and its world television premiere on SHOWTIME on Friday, February 5th at 9 P.M. ET/PT on-air, on demand and over the internet. Following its premiere on SHOWTIME, it will be broadcast in other territories around the world and those air-dates will be announced by the local broadcaster in each market.

For all of you who were hoping for a television broadcast of the documentary - the Estate heard you. For those of you ecstatic to introduce Off The Wall to a new generation of fans, the Estate heard you.

We would like to re-interate that the album included in the package is a re-issue of the original album – there is no additional music or remixes on the CD or any “bonus” material with the documentary. We are sure some will be disappointed that there is not extra material, but as everyone knows, this album was early in Michael’s career. He did not write or record the number of songs for this album as he did for later releases nor did he do any filming using his own camera crews of the making of his short films or other events. Without a wealth of material in the archives, the Estate and Sony decided to take a different approach with this release – strip it down and keep it simple and allow everyone to celebrate the album that started it all with a fun, specially designed, collectible package that holds both the album as originally released along with this special documentary and gives fans a chance to get creative with Michael’s original concept for the album artwork. (You’ll see when you get it!)

Best,
Alicia

^^ Oh shit! I'm excited! I really hope that this is going to be a good documentary. I hope a lot of people will buy the OTW album, maybe it can re-chart again :D Can't wait!

The part about film sounds feasible, but it is just not true that there are no unreleased songs from this era. There might not be as many as in later years, but there are still some. There are also demos of songs that did make the album. I heard a fantastic I Can't Help It demo at Brad Sundberg's seminar, for instance. Heck, they could at the very least have added the demos that were previously released on the special edition and the This Is It soundtrack album. The extended remixes of Burn This Disco Out, Get On The Floor and Off The Wall that have surfaced show that they could have included extended and/or alternate mixes as well. There are also the original album mixes that were replaced on later pressings. On the video front, there is of course footage from the last leg of the Destiny Tour and the Triumph Tour that could have been used.

These are all things that would perfectly fit on a release like this and do not really fit elsewhere. Only re-releasing the original album without any extras is a huge misstep, imo. What is the incentive for people to buy this, especially when the documentary is airing on tv and available on demand online? Fans already own this album in multiple versions.

They really could have done a lot more to make this exciting and to properly celebrate Off The Wall.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Excited? For what? The E$tate has nothing done... Spike Lee has produced the thing by his own. I will never buy one more thing with MJs Name. The E$tate is such a ***** NOTHING really NOTHING good stuffs they had ever released. Now no Demos no Outtakes, u must pay Brad Sundberg $$$$ on Seminars to hear the Demos auf I Cant Help it etc.... THANK YOU ESTATE. MJ is history for me! Thanks Estate!

That is just not true. Maybe Estate is not in the possession of those recordings. Maybe The Jacksons are holding the unreleased tracks from that era and earlier. I understand that BUT they could have put demos/alternative takes and early versions of already released songs. Like already released demos of DSTYGE, WDAN & SOOML.

To me the Estate says lots of bullshit... A little concert of the OTW era that s too much asking? Ho no wait... They don't have any materials. Spike Lee have access to concerts footage and they shows us only little clip, just like the Bad25th documentary and APOM vidéo...

Calm your tits, guys! Jeez. The documentary isn't even out yet and you guys already start to bash the Estate. I know some of us are disappointed that there is no new material, but maybe the documentary is going to be awesome.

Do re releases that contain bonus tracks not count towards sales of the original album? Remember it been discussed years back.. just thinking out loud as to why they refuse to add extras.

Its a good way to up sales figure presumng you cant buy the the two things seperatly (can you?) Unfortunatly though that means fans having to spend more money than is necessary if you have to buy the complete package. Nice money maker and sales upper but not very respectful

- documentary will make its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2016
Good

-world television premiere on SHOWTIME on Friday, February 5th at 9 P.M. ET/PT on-air, on demand and over the internet.
Good

-it will be broadcast in other territories around the world and those air-dates will be announced by the local broadcaster in each market.
Good, I'm sure either or both BBC and Sky Arts will show it

-For those of you ecstatic to introduce Off The Wall to a new generation of fans, the Estate heard you.
Thank you, thats what I want, introduce MJ to next generations:clapping:

-gives fans a chance to get creative with Michael’s original concept for the album artwork. (You’ll see when you get it!)
I wonder what is that?

Everything Spike Lee has is provided to him by the Estate. Also having some songs or even snippets of songs in HD does not necessarily mean that they have full concert. Some songs or snippets of the songs are usually recorded for TV and documentary purposes. Also even if they do have a full concert in that quality that does not mean that they have the rights to release it.

Off The Wall: Michael Jackson's Original Album And The Documentary "Michael Jackson's Journey From Motown To Off The Wall" Set For Release As A CD/DVD Bundle On February 26, 2016
JACKSON'S OFF THE WALL "INVENTED MODERN POP AS WE KNOW IT"

NEW YORK, Jan. 7, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- On February 26, during Black History Month, the Estate of Michael Jackson and Sony Legacy Recordings will release exclusive CD/DVD and CD/Blu Ray editions of Michael Jackson's revolutionary 1979 recording, Off The Wall. The package will include the original version of the album bundled with the new documentary Michael Jackson's Journey from Motown to Off the Wall, directed by Spike Lee. The documentary will make its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2016, and its world television premiere on SHOWTIME on Friday, February 5th at 9 P.M. ET/PT on-air, on demand and over the internet. After its premiere on SHOWTIME, it will be broadcast in territories around the world.

THE ALBUM – The importance of Michael Jackson's Off the Wall cannot be overstated. Recorded when he was just 20 years old, the album heralded Michael's stunning emancipation as a singular musical force and creative visionary. It smashed the ceiling on record sales for black artists, ushering in an exciting new era of R&B-to-pop crossover airplay, chart, marketing and sales trends not seen before in modern pop music. It's the record that "invented modern pop as we know it," wrote Rolling Stone. For fellow black artists of the day, Michael served as an illuminating inspiration.

To Black America, Off The Wall transcended music and entertainment altogether. The success of the album marked a level of national and international achievement that conjured pride in a culture that as late as the end of the 1970s was still fighting for the kind of social acceptance that Michael's album received. Because of Off the Wall's indelible influence, 21st century artists as disparate as Beyonce, Pharrell, Kendrick Lamar and The Weeknd all have a blueprint they turned to for creating their superstardom.

Written by Michael Jackson, the first single from Off The Wall, "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough", was Michael's first Grammy and first single to hit #1 in the U.S. and internationally as a solo artist. With the singles "Rock With You", "Off the Wall" and "She's Out of My Life" Jackson became the first solo artist in history to have four singles from the same album peak inside the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. The album was an enormous commercial success; as of 2014 it is certified eight times platinum in the United States and has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time.

The Music: "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough"; "Rock With You", "Workin' Day and Night"; "Get on the Floor"; "Off the Wall"; "Girlfriend"; "She's Out of My Life"; "I Can't Help It"; " It's the Falling in Love"; "Burn This Disco Out".

THE DOCUMENTARY – Produced by Spike Lee, John Branca and John McClain. For Michael Jackson's Journey from Motown to Off the Wall, director Spike Lee assembles a wealth of archival footage, including material from Michael's personal archive, interviews with contemporary talents and family members, and Michael's own words and image to create this insightful chronicle from the star's early rise to fame through the release of this seminal album. A look at a chapter of his career that is rarely examined, Michael Jackson's Journey from Motown to Off the Wall allows audiences to travel with Michael as he gets his start at Motown, strikes a new path with CBS Records, and forges a relationship with legendary producer Quincy Jones. An illuminated portrait emerges of how an earnest, passionate, hard-working boy would become the "King of Pop."

Partial list of interviews: Lee Daniels; The Weeknd; Pharrell Williams; Misty Copeland, Kobe Bryant; Mark Ronson; John Legend; Questlove; Katherine Jackson; Joe Jackson, Marlon Jackson, Jackie Jackie L.A. Reid and more.

Well I'm not happy about no bonus songs.. I mean like really? But I'm very pleased with the rest of it.

just thinking out loud as to why they refuse to add extras.

Actually, they never said they refused to release it. They just said they don't have any material in their possession. Which might be true. All Off The Wall demos and outtakes written by MJ were recorded in his home studio at Hayvenhurst. Also a lot of those songs were written/co-written for The Jacksons albums. So I believe a lot of those recordings are not even in the hands of the Estate! And you can just forget that the family will hand over those songs.

And for the demos of already released songs.. Demos of MJ penned songs were released by MJ. SOOML demo was released on This Is It. And the majority of other songs were written by Rod Temperton who is not in good relations with the Estate (remember that he refused to give them permission to release the third verse of Best Of Joy!). So it is possible that he refused to give them permission for this release also. It is sad. But it's really not The Estate's fault only. There is a lot of money hungry parties here. So I guess they just realised that there is just not enough unreleased material that is available to them for inclusion on this re-release, so they just decided to re-release the original album with the documentary.

No they did not say that in that fashion. This is what they said

Why are they lying like this? They're trying to chalk it up due to the fact that it was his first album and he did not record many songs. Maybe he did not record as many songs as he did for Invincible but there's still enough songs to fill up a disc. Just as you stated, his demos from hayvenhurst, Going to rio, LITTLE SUSIE DEMO! Can't help it demo, SOOML demo, DSTYGE & WDAN demos. Early versions of songs, extended cuts. That's a really lame excuse by the estate. Another missed opportunity by the Estate.

^^Aren't those demos leaked already?

This has got to be the laziest MJ posthumous release I've ever heard of. They don't even care anymore if the fans are happy (but when have they ever?). No special features to anything but just a re-release of a pretty common album with a documentary. Yippy skippy. I'll just buy the documentary on DVD as a standalone instead of with the album.

^^Aren't those demos leaked already?

SOOML, DSTYGE & WDAN are the only demos officially released. Can't help it leaked last year but not in it's original form. But that's not the point i wanna make. The point is if the estate would have come out and said "we don't want to release material because most of it is on the internet anyways" then I would not be so harsh, even though there is much stuff michael recorded in hayvenhurst just watch the 93 deposition, but they act like there is no material from this era other than that that ended up on the CD which is completely untrue.
Besides there can be so much more stuff than just demos! Extended versions are also great! Michael recorded songs over 6 minutes!

I'm still excited to see the documentary but I can't help but be disappointed that there's no extra's at all.. too bad, I had high hopes of hearing some new demo's and seeing Michael in the studio.. :(
Maybe it's true that the Estate doesn't own that material but then just say 'it's not in our possession' and not 'it doesn't exist' cause we all know it does.
