Re: Why I Believe Dangerous 25 Should Happen
I feel as though your vision of a Dangerous25 is unrealistic.
You suggest a box set featuring unreleased songs and a full concert despite the fact that the very same thing has already been released for an album that has a stronger cultural and historical value (i.e., Bad25) and failed on the charts and surely lost Sony a substantial amount of money.
Bad and Off the Wall are widely considered among the greatest pop albums ever crafted and will draw media and fan attention based on the names alone. They are a staple of pop music in ways Dangerous very well may never be.
Sony first and foremost is a business and will take whatever steps necessary to make worth out of their $250 million contract with the Estate. This is where Xscape and Michael come in -- two albums that set the precedent for sales and are almost guaranteed success stories (at least if those two are to be taken as benchmarks).
Put that up against Bad25, a wide-spanning collection of various packages and special editions that fell off the worldwide charts in 2-3 weeks.
It's also quite telling that the Off the Wall special edition had no demos or previously unheard tracks and only included the Spike Lee documentary (most likely to cushion the blow assuming the reissue came and went without notice, which it mostly did).
I fully agree that Dangerous deserves its moment in the spotlight. However, there is a fine line between "desires" and "reality," and what most of us want out of a Dangerous25 is entirely improbable. It could almost be guaranteed that it won't do half the business and would be a waste of money.
I'm certainly annoying people with my pessimism, but on a daily basis this board gives off such optimism that there will be such spectacular celebratory packages for Dangerous, and this excitement can quickly turn into anger if it isn't met exactly (which it won't).
At most, expect another Off the Wall reissue with a remastered cut of the album and some sort of bonus disc (maybe new tracks or demos). At least, expect absolutely nothing.
