Fall Out Boy To Enter Studio Soon, But Michael Jackson Cover Could Delay Them A Bit

'We are back in limbo, especially with 'Beat It' taking on a life of its own,' bassist Pete Wentz tells MTV News.

By James Montgomery

You would think, given recent events, that Fall Out Boy would be shying away from making grand proclamations. (Well, other than the "I do" kind.)

Generally, that's just not the FOB way (unless one of them is getting married to Ashlee Simpson). Despite the whole Antarctic fiasco, they're at it again, this time telling MTV News that they're planning to spend their summer vacation working on a new album, the follow-up to last year's Infinity on High and their third studio effort in less than three years.

"It was sort of a plan of ours to downplay the fact we are recording a new record soon. Not that we don't care or don't want people to know, but I think we were a little swamped with the press surrounding Infinity on High," guitarist Joe Trohman wrote in an e-mail. "So we wanted to slightly scale that aspect back, make it somewhat more of a surprise so that people would all of a sudden get hit with our new record one of these days.

"As far as when/where we are going to record, the 'when' will be sometime in the next couple of months, the 'where' will be in the Los Angeles/ Burbank [California] area, but we have not chosen an exact date to start preproduction and we have not chosen a studio," he continued. "We have talked about revisiting Ocean Studios in Burbank, where we did From Under the Cork Tree, but honestly, we haven't locked anything down. ... As far as a release date? No f---ing clue."

Trohman added that while the band hasn't decided on a producer for the project, Neil Avron, who worked on both Infinity and Cork Tree, "would be present during the sessions."

Though the band has yet to record a single note, the follow-up to Infinity already has a fairly long — and factually spotty — history. The album was first reported to be heavily influenced by folk music, reports the band spent much of last year trying to live down. It was then described by bassist Pete Wentz as being inspired by the "distorted, awesome riffs" of Oasis. So what's the latest take on how it will sound?

"We've said time and time again that we derive our songs from many different sources. Have you ever heard Patrick [Stump] sing? There's the bulk of the R&B right there. Folk? I think that was more of a lyricism aspect, though there is something musically reminiscent in some of the demos," Trohman wrote. "The riffs I've sent to Patrick have had somewhat of an Iggy Pop feel, as he's an obsession of mine. Others [have a] somewhat Smiths-y/ late-'70s-to-early-'80s Manchester sound."

Of course, FOB's summer plans could very well have changed by the time you read this. In a separate e-mail to MTV News, Wentz admitted that Fall Out Boy fully intend to hit the studio in June or July, but things could be different now, given the success of their cover of Michael Jackson's "Beat It," which has quickly become a mainstay in the iTunes top 10. Seems they're now planning to promote that (Wentz said they'll shoot a video for the track next week) rather than gearing up to enter the studio. (See how the MTV News staff recently got to make our own Michael Jackson videos in the Newsroom blog.)

"It's been an interesting back-and-forth. Before Chile, we weren't sure when we were going to record. Then during the process, we felt a new energy and planned for the summer," Wentz wrote. "Now we are back in limbo, especially with 'Beat It' kind of taking on a life of its own. There's a part of us that just wants to go to another country and lay something down and see how it goes, but right now we are just kind of on autopilot trying to figure out the next move."

Wentz did go on to say that FOB still hope to have a new album in stores by "late fall," and he added that they have plenty of songs ready to go, though it's still too early to talk about them in any great detail, lest we have a repeat of the whole "folk" thing.

"It's so interesting how whatever comment you make about new music becomes the 'set-in-stone' description of your new music. ... It's too early to tell what it will sound like, but my only guess would be a progression again," he wrote. "Also, it's so early that we don't really have any names for the songs. They all have joke titles like 'MC Hammer and Ms. Piggy Bank.' "

In other FOB album news, Roots drummer Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson told Billboard.com this week that his band's forthcoming album, Rising Down, would not, as has been previously reported, include the track "Birthday Girl," which features Stump. The song just didn't fit with the rest of the set,?uestlove said.

Thanks Rasta. All them popstars should just let MJ write their songs for then. They'd be a winner all the time. I hope they give MJ the credit he deserves cause fall out song is no better than MJ's.

man the sony atv company is getting paid.....of coarse the media would never report it...you never hear of Michael the businessman

there is talk show called the Michael Baisen show.. that features the song BAD as his intro.. since he is called THE BAD BOY OF RADIO.. and during the show he plays the intro to Thriller when there are small ADs about the show.. during the show time...(hope that makes sense)..

he also featured T25 during the week of its release.. and put J5 music in the mix to new rap songs.. and one mix he had CANT LET HER GET AWAY.. from Dangerous.. as soon as I heard that.. I took out my Dangerous Cd..

nice !

Gwyneth Paltrow: J@CKO 2.0?

If only Moses could part the pap sea, his mama wouldn't have to go to extremes to keep him under wraps.

Gwyneth Paltrow tried to block her oddly-named kids' faces in NY yesterday -- and they were not pleased.

I think the paps werent pleased as they couldnt see her kids. MJs not the only one who doesnt want his kids exposed to their BS.

Since when is Moses an odd name?

It's utter nonsense when they connect this type of identity protection exclusively to Jackson since other celebrities covered their children in public long before he started reproducing:

Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley
Rosie O'Donnell
Madonna

I still haven't seen Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's kids.

Anyway...
Thanks for the news! What a brilliant business man Jackson is. I wanna be him when I grow up! :)

Just find this article...

MICHAEL JACKSON THRILLER SURPRISE

It’s hard to believe that it’s 25 years since Michael Jackson’s Thriller album was released and went on to become the world’s biggest selling album of all time. It’s hard to believe that the super-star singer is a local resident here and after a three-month stay at the Palms has settled down in a rental near Wayne Newton’s estate.

No—he hasn’t left town per my gossip guru friend Norm Clarke.
In fact, there’s even a remote possibility he may turn up tonight (THURS) disguised as himself amongst a slew of Michael Jackson impersonators on hand for Tao’s anniversary celebration of his new Thriller 25th anniversary album release. The nightclub at The Venetian has encouraged Michael Jackson look-alikes to show up in costume with special surprise guests—and it’s just possible the real Michael could be hidden amongst the doubles and nobody would ever guess! The Tao event has the blessing of Michael’s record company and the Jackson family—so it’s anybody’s guess as to who and how many will show!

I know this is going to create a lot of attacks but it is a report in a legitimate paper. I know I worried when Michael went off to Bahrain and seemingly entered into a contract so soon after the end of the trail. You could not expect him to be in a good mental state at that time. Hopefully he is in a better place mentally now. By recent reports he is. Also, if it turned out that after signing, Michael's creative license was compromised, he may have had good reason to believe the consequences of breaching the contract would be the lesser of two evils. We just don't know.

I have lunch with a friend, Dutch film producer PJ Sandwick who wants me to sign the soundtrack to his movie, which is in edit. I love doing film soundtracks, among others we did was Crash which was hugely successful.

It’s nice being offered projects. That’s what happened when the Sheikh Abdullah of Bahrain approached me in 2005 to do the Michael Jackson comeback. I went to meet Michael and turned it down at first as I thought he had too much baggage. But I eventually agreed. Michael’s an extraordinarily intelligent man, but sadly his moral health is far worse than one could imagine. He ran off and reneged on his contract and now there’s a court case.

Every great artist I’ve ever met is slightly difficult. Space, for example, were just great, so quirky, but a difficult bunch of bastards. From Liverpool, they hated everyone and sadly they self-imploded as a consequence.

dont see why they would be attacks we all know theres a lawsuit about it. like you said who knows the facts. it wasnt exactly a great time for mj.

Well, that's his take on it. He has the right to call it as he sees it. We all know that there was a deal and that MJ backed out, and that can be construed as immoral by some. However, we don't know what MJ's reasons were. They may have been completely legitimate. Or he just came to his senses and realised that he is, after all, Michael Jackson and should not resort to releasing his albums on some unknown middle easten label. Whatever happened, I'm glad he backed out of that deal. He may have to pay for it, but I'm sure it'll be worth it in the end. He'd be much better off with professionals like Sony/BMG.

Adding to your thoughts:

As I recall, a few months ago, Prince Abdullah was interviewed (I can't remember the name of the newspaper) and he said that the lawsuit in question is "business", it has nothing to do with Michael personally. The Prince went on to say that "Michael is still a DEAR friend of his." He added that "Michael is the nicest person he ever met and nothing like the media makes him out to be."

you mean....all those songs in the sony ATV...Rihanna...Jordin Sparks...all of them. the money are paid to Michael? NICE!!

as Kenny Rogers said...you have to know when to fold them...and in business sometimes you have to take a loss.. especially if you know you will gain later and that gain is greater than your loss...

with the t25.. I will say Michael has already gained on his lost..

and the fact that Guy didn't want to work for Michael in the 1st place.. that's worrying.. from where I stand Michael would have been owed like a slave on that deal..

Glad he didn't go thru with it...

That frogman called guy is very rude. I think he is now sorry that the deal didn't work. I am glad MJ didn't go ahead with the rotten deal anyway. I can imaginge frog, I mean guy, made extra demand in exchange for working with MJ, maybe using the threat that nobody else will work with MJ. How wrong was he then, now he is regretting it. He has gone further than the Sheik in his criticism of MJ. In reality, no deal should have been made with mj in so short of time after his trial, esp when he was only there to recover from his ordeal.

Ditto........

Yeah, Michael backed out, but it wasn't because he has low morals, it was because he made a mistake, made a bad deal at and vulnderable moment, realized it, and backed out. Sure, it wasn't the right thing to do business wise, but it wasn't done with malice on Michael's part, nothing is. He backed out because he knew he'd made a mistake, etc...
