resize_image.php

Sony/ATV’s “Musical Notes” #14
A fortnightly newsletter highlighting some of the many classic songs in the Sony/ATV Music Publishing catalog.

From Alan Warner, Creative Consultant

*****************

“By the time we got to Woodstock
We were half a million strong
And everywhere was a song and celebration”

Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock” was the first Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young hit single following CS&N’s debut charters: “Marrakesh Express” and “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes”. Read about these and some of the other earth-shattering compositions by David, Stephen and Graham who together left us indelible memories of their stunning three-part harmonies.

*****************

Songs by CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH

In the 1960’s, the term ‘supergroup’ was used to describe bands made up of superstar members of different rock groups. Crosby, Stills & Nash were the quintessential example of such a collaboration, each of whom had carved out illustrious careers before joining forces in the summer of 1968: David Crosby formerly of the Californian folk rock group The Byrds, Stephen Stills of the equally legendary west coast country rock band Buffalo Springfield and Graham Nash who was a founder member of the hit- laden British pop/rock group The Hollies.

Joined later by an equally celebrated fourth member – Neil Young (also formerly of Buffalo Springfield) – they became a major success: their soaring, ethereal vocal harmonies and acoustic accompaniment instantly capturing the attention of audiences worldwide.

The debut self-titled Crosby, Stills & Nash LP in 1969 was particularly powerful introducing their trademark sound and another highspot was the first Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young collaboration titled “Déjà Vu” a year later. Later, Crosby & Nash released both solo and duo albums and the following selection of the large catalog of C, S & N compositions controlled by Sony/ATV gives an overview of highlights from their individual songwriting contained in the albums released by the various aggregations.

The themes of their songs range from political statements to wistful romantic tales. Here are a group of highlights from their three catalogs with some selected lyric extracts:

Musicnotes' digital sales growth exceeds 30 percent this year

Madison-based Musicnotes Inc., a provider of downloadable sheet music and guitar tablature, said it has sold nearly 500,000 downloads so far in 2008 and generated sales of approximately $3 million, representing digital sales growth of more than 30 percent through early May.

Chairman and CFO Tim Reiland said the economic slowdown does not seem to be impacting Musicnotes' business activity.

"If anything, we have seen our growth accelerate over the past several weeks," he said in an announcement Monday.

Since the site's launch in late 1999, www.musicnotes.com has sold almost 4 million downloads to more than 1.2 million customers. Musicnotes, Inc. offers an online catalog of nearly 80,000 digital sheet music titles, built on content agreements with Alfred Publishing, EMI Music Publishing, Sony/ATV Publishing, BMG/Universal, Disney Music Publishing, peermusic, Word Music, EMI Christian, Bug Music and many others.

Rasta, thanks for the news regarding "downloadable sheet music".

It never ceases to amaze me, just how many ways music publisher's can earn money.

The Music Industry and her laws/process are complex, and extremely interesting...

Jackson party tickets are a sell-out

TICKETS for a party being organised to welcome the family of Michael Jackson to North Devon sold out within days of going on sale.

Just hours after news of the special evening at the Durrant House Hotel, Northam, was revealed in the Gazette , 160 VIP table seats were sold via the event website www.mjjparty.com. By Thursday evening, 80 seated tickets had been bought by fans. And by Saturday afternoon, 30 remaining standing-only tickets were snapped up by fans hoping to catch a glimpse of their idols at the event on Sunday, June 8.

Fans from all over the UK and Europe will be descending on North Devon for the event in aid of the North Devon Hospice, with Jackson followers from as far afield as Switzerland, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands and Germany among the lucky few to have got their hands on tickets.

"I can safely say that it's been the busiest week of my life," said organiser, 18-year-old North Devon College student George Warren.

"The response has been amazing. Within hours of the Gazette coming out and the website going live, fans started discussing the event on on-line forums.

"I've been fielding a lot of questions from people wanting to know more about the event: how they can get to North Devon; where they can stay; and will Michael be coming!

"I'm really pleased that roughly 50 per cent of the tickets have been bought by local people in North Devon though - and that is thanks to the coverage in the Gazette.

"It should be a great event and I'm really looking forward to it."

George, from Barnstaple, added that since news of the event broke, he had been inundated by requests from performers, desperate to appear at the event.

The four-hour show will feature some of the biggest names in the Michael Jackson tribute circuit and former Jackson Five member Tito Jackson has confirmed that he, and "other Jackson family members" will be in attendance.

I Like The Feelin' You're
Givin' Me
Just Hold Me Baby And I'm
In Ecstasy
- Michael Jackson, The Way You Make Me Feel

Today on Oprah, Oprah mentioned that only two people who made her nerveous. Guess who is one of those people. MICHAEL JACKSON in his 93 interview. I remember her saying that even after the 1993 interview show pieace when she said she looked him in the eye and ask if he was nervous and he said "no". Oprah also said she got dry mouth. That mean she must have been real nervous. I remember some people were upset that Barbara Walters (and some said Barbara was upset as well) did not get the "BIG" interview. Remember Oprah was still somewhat new to the game in 1993.

Ain't it funny how she would just bring up his name like that. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the BEGINNING of her "trying" to woo him to her stage. I believe Barbara Walters would love to have another opportunity to sit down with him also, before she retires for good.

When it comes to Michael Jackson they ALL know what time it is!

Barbara Walters was livid.. that she didn't get that big interivew...

its was the highest viewed interview in the world and the highest in the US until Monica Lewinsky interview...

it was live world-wide.. I remember.. I watched it in London...live

This interview is what gave Oprah her swagger.. it set her up for life for TV...

If I remember correctly.. Michael had a choice in who he would do the interview with.. and he entertained Oprah and her crew.. at least a whole week b4 the interview was done...

That is the reason I have always believed that Oprah behaves towards MJ the way she does, cause she Knows he did her a big favour that she cannot repay and she hates that. I am glad she was nervous. it shes how much bigger MJ is than her.

Oprah is an entertainment icon and a billionaire. I don't think she worries about what Jackson thinks. She is very powerful and can drive sells of books and music through an appearance on her show. She is so powerful that her endorsement may carry Barack Obama straight to the White House. In his comeback bid, Jackson should be well advised to do a sit down with Oprah before the release of his next record.

Oprah did not start out being an billionaire or an icon...

that interview with Michael back in 1993.. catapoled her into that realm..
make no mistake...

If I had the power to advise Michael I would tell him to steer clear of an ungrateful woman who was willing to stick the knife in him when he needed help the most. A woman who by the virtue of the power she weilds, used that power to assist a da to railroad an innocent man.

Please mJ, stay away from that woman, she means you no good. 'The higher the monkey climbs, is the more he's explosed', goes the old saying.
I will never forgive that woman for what she did to Michael. I do not care how much money she has in the bank, it does not phase me.

Amen to this. I don't care how much she help sell albums, no way should MJ go anywhere near that woman again.

Wheel and come again!

No way in hell should Michael Joseph Jackson step one foot on the Oprah Winfrey show! I could'nt care less how much more albums he could sell by appearing. The woman has alluded that she believes he's a paedophille, why on earth should he even want to be on her show? Michael Jackson is no sell out!!!!

Yeah, that's why she was stumbling all over her words at the beggining. "Don't get me wrong... I was dead wrong", lol.

Michael created the plateform for Oprah to become the name and the influence that she is. He was such a huge star at the time that interview was conducted, that his fame and power rubbed off on her fat ass and helped catipult her to the top. If she hadn't landed that interview, Oprah most likely wouldn't be the "icon" she is today. Before that interview, nobody outside of the United States even knew who she was. He gave her that opportunity and she repayed him by talking all kinds of smack about him and belittleing him on her show, at the same time encouraging her guests to do the same. Ungrateful cow.

Honestly, the only talk show that I'd feel perfectly comfortable seeing Michael appear on at this point would be Ellen DeGeneres' show. Ellen would make the interview fun and enjoyable, and she's shown nothing but love for the entire Jackson family (always dancing to MJ and Janet's music, etc). There's no doubt that Oprah would ask Michael all of the most personal and controversial questions from 1993 through present, all of the questions that Michael has answered repeatedly and that he's expressed a strong desire not to talk about.

I wish that Michael would just put together his own two-hour documentary strictly about his musical genius and the way he creates songs and then sell it to the highest network bidder. That way, there's no way for it to go wrong and the public would see the so often neglected, yet unsurpassed MUSICAL side of him.

I think it would be amazing if there was a way for him to do a documentary like that but if it had to be an interview then it should be with a true fan not someone just out for their 15 minutes and what they think people wanna hear. So many interviews I long for more because they just re-hash crap we know forward and backward. If the man is gonna give someone his time then they could at least ask something new, something the musicians wanna hear, something the fans never heard and something Michael would enjoy sharing  Ok, done dreaming

Well, I think at this point, Michael should NOT do any more interview unless it is about his music. Nothing else. He does NOT have to justify anything to anyone (and if anyone think he does need to talk about his life needs to get a life of their own). Michael is one of those artist now that you either love him or you don't and NO interview is going to change people mind either way. I think people who love Michael are going to continue to love him no matter what anyone say, and haters are going to hate unless they look within thier own hearts and grow up.

Oprah disappeared when Mr.Jackson truly needed his so called friends...I find it extremely interesting that after all this time, all of a sudden she tells her followers that she was nervous in the interview..?

What does she want..???

Mr.Jackson "KNOWS" who are true to him...and should stay away from those who "USE" is name/stature for their own personal gain!

Absolutely. I don't even know why anyone should ask after all he has been through with the media. We know all there is to know already. He doesn't need to say anymore, and certainly not to the media. Those people could have killed his poor mother or leave his children fatherless. No more interview MJ.

Let the church say amen:clapping:

To think he won't get put in front of an interviewer again at some point is silly lol. It's just a part of the business. He'll need to be out there and marketable. But any interview or appearance should be focused and not re-hash the negative or redundant. Everyone already knows about the trial, anything in the past really - focus on the current and future is what is needed

Michael didn't do any interviews for years until he did Oprah. I think she said it herself. I do not believe MJ is doing any interview anytime soo. I think he will give statements just like he did on the french NRL or he will have the camera's watch him work like Access Hollywood, but he will not speak to the media in a way that he began to do. I believe he has totally lost faith in the media and I can't say that I blame him.

I think he will give statements just like he did on the french NRL or he will have the camera's watch him work like Access Hollywood, but he will not speak to the media in a way that he began to do. I believe he has totally lost faith in the media and I can't say that I blame him.

Actually, he did, it's just that they weren't considered "major". He phoned Barbara Walters (I think) during the Bad Era, made comments and press conferences during Thriller and Victory, was interviewed on the set of Beat It, appeared in Quincy Jones specials, and he was interviewed on the Bad Tour by Molly Meldrum. Also, he allowed access and spoke during a segment for E! with Mary Hart. The interviews and comments were short, but they were interviews nonetheless. The most major one he ever did was Oprah and then Martin Bashir (90 minutes and 2 hours). But he didn't not do interviews for years before, it's just that they weren't as long as the Oprah one. :)

EDIT: He also did several interviews for magazines in those years too.

No one can blame him for mis-trusting the media. I think Access Hollywood was a baby step back into it all though. That was focused and clearly about what MJ wanted to share and just enough to keep him marketable. He'll do more of that I should think

Mag interviews are great too.

Apparentely michael doesnt care about her power or billion , if he does he would have accepted the interview she asked him to do during the trial but he rejected it .

Oprah didnt make michael , but michael boosted her carreer .He doesnt need her for his career , what would he do in her crappy show ? michael just need to do good music , not being in touch with such fake people .

Did Oprah really ask Michael to do an interview during his trial? I have never heard that. What I did love about Michael was the the fact after the verdict, Michael and his family walked out of court and did not talk to NO ONE. The media hated that and I LOVED it.
