What did you expect them to do? This is exactly the type of half-assed effort I would expect from the estate by now.

Michael Jackson's short film for "Black or White" was the first of nine short films produced for recordings from Dangerous, Michael's fourth album as an adult solo performer. As a single, "Black or White" was an international sensation, topping the charts in 20 countries in 1991 and 1992, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.


"Black or White" was certified Gold and Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America on January 6, 1992. The song was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance - Male in 1993. Both "Black or White" and its follow-up "Remember the Time" received BMI Urban Awards in 1993 for being two of the most performed songs of the year.


The ambitious "Black or White" short film again found Michael pushing the boundaries of the "music video" as art form. An extended prologue stars Macaulay Culkin as a boy whose father (George Wendt) is angered by the playing of loud rock music after bedtime. After being admonished for "wasting your time with this garbage," Culkin vengefully plugs a guitar into an enormous speaker, blasting his father out of the house and across the globe, still sitting in his easy chair.


The main body of the "Black or White" short film reflects the song's lyrical plea for racial and cultural unity. Michael is seen on the plains of Africa, the Vasquez Rocks in California, and outside traditional Russian architecture, singing and dancing with African tribesmen, Thai women, Native Americans, an Odissi dancer from India and a troupe of Hopak dancers.


At the song's bridge, Michael triumphantly walks through fiery images of war and injustice before the mid-song rap by L.T.B. is lip-synched by Culkin. Michael sings the final chorus from the Statue of Liberty's torch while other world landmarksloom in the background. The song closes with a lip-synched performance by people of various races, one face morphing into another seamlessly using computer-controlled special effects called "feature-based morphing." This scene marked the first use of this technology outside of a major motion picture. (A young Tyra Banks is among the people in this scene.)


The final scene of the extended version of this short film features a black panther walking off the set and onto an empty city street, morphing intoMichael, who engages in a cathartic dance sequence with no musical accompaniment. As a storefront explodes around him, Michael morphs back into a panther, and an animated end tag shows Bart Simpson watching the short film.

Black Panther is such an epic video. I can't believe so many people got their panties in a twist and found it offensive. There is nothing wrong with that video. It's a masterpiece in every form.
 
^ Well I think you and I both know Michael was trying to be thought provoking and controversial.. It was the piece he played, and played it well... He knew VH1,BET, MTV were going to play it. it was no 'innocent' like he played after! he was smart.
 
Um, maybe the fact that he turns into a BLACK PANTHER has something to do with it?! That and he is fondling himself (!) constantly all throughout it (the last few minutes). Which is all cool and good with me (the fondling that is, eh, ha, ha! :) )! But many people find that to be offensive...or at least use to. It was and dare I say still is shocking! One almost wonders how and why he was able to get away with it?! It does play into the stereotype of the black man who cannot express and or articulate his thoughts using dialogue and instead chooses to resort to violence. So it is kind of a racist film.
 
Michael always tosses in sexual innuendos into his work.. we're not gonna pretend he doesn't do that are we? From the crotch grabbing, thrusting, humping the ground, moaning, 'jerk off' signals with his hands... He def. put it out there
 
I can't even begin to fathom why the Black Panther segment was edited out. For me, that's the highlight of the video by far. Watching Michael just go wild for a few minutes is out of this world.

I think VH1, BET, MTV would have played it prime time anyway, but with this little calculated scandal, the whole thing became news beyond the music media nieche. The perfect start for a comeback.

The Panther segment is great, but it's way too long for the daily rotation on music TV with that long outro with no music. Same reason why long album versions of songs always get edited for singles / radio play into 3-4 minutes.


Interesting btw, that they uploaded the original version of the video without the post-scandal added graffiti ("KKK" etc) on the glas he's smashing. Was this version also included on the last DVD releases?

Yes, on Vision.
 
Lets not also forget that Michael knew that a lot of focus would be on his skin color.. Especially being the first video with basically no 'color'.. A Song called Black Or White!! Lets totally give them something else to talk about, go full throttle and shock everyone while at it.
 
^ Michael was always cutting edge.. from the 80's with Claymation to the morphing... he saw something new, and tried to see how far he could push it.
 
Could Michael's statement on the Black or White video be considered 'an apology'?

I think he's referring to the statement Michael released in 1991 shortly after the backlash saying that he was upset that it offended anyone and that it wasn't his intention.
