JACKSON STEPS OUT:

Early reports show Sony Legacy's 25th anniversary re-release of Michael Jackson's deluxe Thriller package is overperforming, with a first-week sales prognosis that could put it in the 80-90k range, which would seemingly be good enough for a Top 5 bow. Props to John Ingrassia and his Commercial Music Group for a job well-done. (2/12p)

Way the go, MJ. I am so happy that it is doing very well. :)

I agree cinnamon, because I felt the same way. I was so against this rehash of Thriller. It went over and beyond my expectations. I was thinking maybe 5 or 6 thousand copies would've moved in the US, so 80-90,000 is exceptional for a 25 year old album

Me too and I also wasn't expecting it to sell anymore than 10,000 or debut in the top 5 so this is a great suprise. Seeing the positive reaction to Thriller 25 makes me think that with the right songs and promotion, Michael could probably have a good comeback with the new album.

I have been saying this a few times now, but I think its genious to use the celebration of Thriller to make people ready for new music^_^.
Makes people remember, question all the BS thats been said, makes people more willing to focus on the music etc.....

Thanks for the news!!!:D

Heading for a #1 Debut in US?

HITS DAILY

JACKING THE CHARTS: It looks like Brushfire/Universal Republic’s Jack Johnson will get another week on top of the HITS Building Album Sales chart next week, as Sleep Through the Static appears on target to sell more than 135k, based on one-day sales reports from retailers now surfing in Kansas. Still, it's not out of the question that the #1 slot could be in reach for Jackson’s 25th anniversary Thriller package or Universal Republic’s Amy Winehouse, depending on trends, while J Grammy winner Alicia Keys’ As I Am continues strong with another 100k, give or take. That would give Monte Lipman’s label two of the Top 5. Other Grammy titles experiencing sales boosts include Album of the Year winner Herbie Hancock’s Joni Mitchell tribute on Verve, up to 35k from 5k last week, and RCA/RMG’s Rock winners Foo Fighters up to 30k from 13k. The market was up 11% vs. last week, down 14% vs. same week last year and now already down 13% year-to-date. (2/13p)

Wouldn't that be craaaaazy if Thriller debuted at #1? That would really be historic.

I think it will be #4 or #5.. T25 just can't sell that much, just can't, EVERY journalist would write about that for week or two if that happened and that would be HUGE pr for Michael, but I'm pretty sure it can't reach that high sells.

THEY GLOVE HIM, THEY REALLY GLOVE HIM: Michael Jackson's 25th anniversary Thriller reissue on Sony Legacy is selling even better than expected, with a projected first-week total of 120k that should easily place it in next week's Top 5. The new package includes the original nine songs, five tracks remixed with will.i.am, Akon, Fergie and Kanye West, a ballad, "For All Time," that was left off the original, and a DVD featuring the three classic videos ("Beat It," "Billie Jean," "Thriller") and a clip of the King of Pop moon-walking for the first time on the Motown 25th anniversary show. Props to John Ingrassia and his Commercial Music Group for a job well done on this historic package. (2/13p)

I can't believe it could sell 120 000 copies right away! No way.. If it will, Michael really got me surprised in 6 years or something!! That's a HUGE surprise!

"Thriller 25" can even sell few millions this year (like three million, for instance, or even more depending on how things will go).

Sony-BMG produced probably no less than 1 million copies on "Thriller 25" to fill distribution chains. If in the first week "T25" will sell like 300 thousand copies worldwide, this will mean that wholesale figure will be possibly 1.5 million globally just in couple weeks.

damn i would be over the moon if Mike is number 1 here in the states with a rerelease
i think he can definitely do it

The 2001 Edition of Thriller along with 3 other versions of Thriller with two of them in the top 25 are in the top 100 at amazon.com, OTW, BAD, and Dangerous and Number Ones are all in the top 1000, Michael is selling a ton of albums all around right now.

Depending on how things will go, already now it can be surely said that Michael will sell like 3.5-6 million solo albums this year not releasing new material.

Usually, Jackson sells like up to 2.5 million solo albums per year not doing anything at all. That is why in this decade Michael already wholesold:

2000-2005:

OTW: 3m
T: 6m
B: 1m
D: 2m
H-P,P&F-BI: HB and HC: m4 (2m each)
BOTDF/HITM: 1m
HoVI: 3m
I: 11m
#1s: 8m
others (including Motown/Universal): 4m
singles: 1m

overall: 44 million records wholesold;

now, 2006 and 2007 added like 4.5 million to that and we have about 48 million to date. To the end of this year, sales will reach 52-56 million for current decade -- without any new album released this year I mean.

Just for comparison: in 1980s Michael sold 80 million solo albums (Motown included; approximation), in 1990s about 95 million albums.

If Jackson will release album with new material then sales for this decade may reach like 70-85 million.

Thanks for the news and a very happy birthday to Junior!
Such great news regarding thriller 25 sales. I ll tell you guys at HMV Bond Street London today there were only a few copies left of Thriller 25...the guys there said its flying off the shelves and nearly sold out!!!

THIS IS BLOODY GREAT NEWS!!!! Rock on Michael.

In Ebony Mag, it's stated that 54 million copies of Thriller have sold in the US. Now, I wonder why noone is talking about that. Is it because Thriller hasn't been certified by RIAA? your thoughts.

Guinness people confirmed that before certifying "Thriller" with 104 million sales they requested sales data from RIAA and IFPI. Usually, "Thriller" wholesale would be like 63 million to date, but the theory is that Guinness people added older retail sales figure for "Thriller" for the world from IFPI to RIAA's estimation (though their business is USA only). This could be reason why both "Thriller" and overall sales increased almost twice during that certification.

However, there is possibility that whole lot of cheaper versions of albums sold in less rich countries than USA were finally taken into account -- for all like twenty five years of sales.

There is nothing else besides those two theories yet; no official explanation was received. Sony-BMG avoids now publishing any concrete sales figures for "Thriller", the more so overall sales. Only Guinness did this but they are not legally and financially responsible for being accurate or not. The same is with Michael's PR people, when they write press-releases. However, please everyone take notice that it was Guinness people who brought re-certified figures, not Jackson's staff and the more so not Michael himself. So whenever Guinness tries now to say they got information from Jackson's people it contradicts to its direct answer to earlier query on this.

MIJAC MOONWALKS FROM GRAMMY APPEARANCE?: Rep for the entertainer said the segment 'was too last minute.'

(February 13, 2008)

*Michael Jackson's scheduled Grammy appearance that never happened is being blamed on a last minute "panic attack," according to the New York Daily News' Rush & Malloy.

The song-and-dance number was to include will.i.am, Fergie and possibly Akon and Kanye West performing their re-tooled singles from Michael Jackson's new "Thriller 25" CD.

Rumor had it that Jackson was originally supposed to perform during the segment to commemorate the 25th anniversary of his "Thriller" album. This rumor was followed up by reports that the segment would be scrapped altogether because Jackson did not want to participate.
By Friday of last week, there were reports that producers offered to keep the segment only if Jackson agreed to at least walk on stage and wave. Needless to say, none of these scenarios happened during Sunday's telecast.
The Daily News quotes a Jackson rep who explained: "It was too last-minute. All the elements didn't come together."

'Thriller' at 25: Still Can't Beat It

Though a flawed masterwork, a new anniversary edition reminds us how well the best of Michael Jackson's seminal album holds up a quarter century later (even if the bonus tracks are mostly Bad)
michael-jackson_l.jpg

MICHAEL JACKSON Thriller was a collection of songs that cohered as the statement of a young artist proclaiming his freedom, writes Ken Tucker

By now, it's simply assumed that Michael Jackson's Thriller is some kind of masterpiece, its legacy sullied only by the private-life shenanigans-or-worse of its principal creator. But Epic/Legacy's release of a 25th-anniversary edition of Thriller — tricked out with five remixes, an unreleased track, and a DVD — is a good time to place this creation in its proper art-historical context. When it was released in November 1982, Thriller initially seemed an extension of 1979's Off the Wall. Here was another solo album from a young man trying to gracefully separate himself from the family act that made him a star, produced once again by Quincy Jones, as a mixture of hits-plus-filler that characterized the then-dominant pop-music delivery system: the LP.

It soon became apparent, however, that Thriller was something unique. Its first single, the goofy-sweet Paul McCartney duet ''The Girl Is Mine,'' was a safe choice, but the second single, ''Billie Jean,'' exploded everything around it. Its driving funk beat and atypically aggressive, fascinatingly obscure lyrics — which found Michael vehemently denying some woman was his lover — lent ''Billie Jean'' an urgency that only became more intense when Jackson used it on the March 1983 TV special Motown 25 to unveil his signature dance moves, including the moonwalk.

That performance is included here on DVD, plus the three long-form music videos for ''Billie Jean,'' ''Beat It,'' and ''Thriller.'' The shock and awe that a human being could inspire navigating a stage with such effortless yet almost supernatural command (not for nothing did legends Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly congratulate Michael on his dancing) vaulted Jackson and Thriller to a new level of prominence. Songs such as ''Beat It,'' with its stinging hard-rock guitar solo by Eddie Van Halen, and ''Wanna Be Startin' Somethin','' instantly one of the greatest party songs ever, were no-brainer hits, but Michael's sudden pop culture pervasiveness carried even a weaker song like ''P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)'' into the top 10.

Here's the thing: Thriller isn't a perfect creation. Quick, can you hum ''The Lady in My Life,'' the album's hookless closer? Didn't think so. The core of Thriller's music was executed by members of Toto, the ultimate L.A. session-hack band (remember their hits ''Hold the Line'' and ''Africa''?), in arrangements that sometimes required Michael's masterfully expressive vocals to mask their mere slickness. And if you ignore the hype and look around at other 1982 releases, Thriller is arguably not even the most-sustained quality album of that year: I could make strong arguments for George Clinton's Computer Games (come on, ''Atomic Dog'' alone influenced more hip-hop than any Michael song ever did), Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska, and, yes, Marshall Crenshaw.

Largely due to its staggering business figures — more than 100 million copies sold — its longtime ''world's best-selling album'' tag, and media domination, Thriller transcended mere musical achievement. In a way that is unthinkable now in a landscape that doesn't view the album as its primary medium of expression, Thriller was a collection of songs that cohered as the statement of a young artist proclaiming his freedom, a boy grown into manhood as a compleat entertainer — singer, songwriter, performer. (Director John Landis brought out the best in Michael's rebellious, angry side in the ''Thriller'' video.)

The thing to celebrate about Thriller's 25th-anniversary release is the pleasure still to be taken from its best songs, and the opportunity to, for at least a few moments, put aside all the tabloid controversy that has since engulfed an undeniably gifted artist. Because, to paraphrase one of the album's lyrics, when it comes to Jackson's Thriller phenomenon, tenderoni you've got to be.

...AND THE 25TH-ANNIVERSARY EDITION OF THRILLER'S NOT-SO-THRILLING EXTRAS, TRACK BY TRACK
''The Girl Is Mine 2008'' A remix with will.i.am, who raps, ''She like the way I rock.'' Over and over. D+
''P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) 2008'' Will.i.am again, remixing the drum parts to update yet dilute the original's already-slim charms. D
''Wanna Be Startin 'Somethin' 2008'' Akon doing his best to complement Jackson's vocal, and as such, a bit of unexpectedly charming modesty sells this remix. B
''Beat It 2008'' Oh, good Lord — few things suggest how out of touch Michael and his advisers have become than enlisting Fergie to caterwaul in the background. Still upstaged by Eddie Van Halen's for-the-ages guitar solo. D
''Billie Jean 2008'' Did guest Kanye West think Jackson's greatest Thriller achievement would be helped by remixing some leftover ''Golddigger'' stutter-beats and sluggishly rapping ''Yeah, unh, unh'' a few times? Really, Kanye... D
''For All Time'' A previously unreleased Thriller-session song, this pretty ballad is sung in Jackson's pensive ''Ben''-era tenor. B

That article was kind of interesting. I haven't been reading most of them because they just go on and on about how great "Thriller" was and make it seem like it was Michael at his best. You get kind of tired of hearing that after a while, so at least this article had some interesting comments, some I agree with, some I don't.

Strangely enough, the only remix I sort of like was the one with Akon, and only really because of Michael's 15 second vocal in the middle, lol. "For All Time" is a great song though and I would give it an A. The rest sucked big booty, lol.

So who said Michael is washed up again? Talk about having egg on your face. If it reaches the top five, I'm not gonna shut up about this to all the haters, lol.

You know I have dissed Michael for putting out this album because I just didn't see the point in re-releasing a 25 year old album, but I have to say that I'm happy to see that it seems to be doing well especially in the U.S. People are always talking about how he's washed up here and has no fans left in America so this is good to see. Maybe if people are willing to buy Thriller 25 they'll be willing to buy the new album as well so this is a good sign.

and this is exactly why the whole project from the beginning was

GENIUS.......

The news is amazing. Just imagine if T25 debuts on the top of the Billboard charts?! WOWSERS!!!

The Daily News quotes a Jackson rep who explained: "It was too last-minute. All the elements didn't come together."

That does not mean that he had a "panic attack".

Ok, y'all, I am watching AH right now and they are talking to Janet. She is gonna talk about Mike and might have revealed something that she is not suppose to about Mike. I wonder what it could be.

reading the great news on T25...

this is what I call the

VINDICATION ERA............

to have a major corp's like Sony full backing after the hell he went thru speaks volume...

Ok, so what happened - Janet was given a copy of T25 by Shawn Robinson and she said that she did not get a copy of the CD. She also added (she was joking) that she did not get her share of the earning from the mega selling CD. As we all know, Janet is on PYT and she finally told the story on how she got the chance to sing in the song. When she was going to tell it, she was like, "I do not think that I should tell the story". Anyway, she said that all of these girls come over to sing the song. Then, these girls were told to leave except Janet. So, they decided to let Janet sing the song. That is the story on how she got a chance to sing that "na na na" part. LOL. I tried to understand how that was a secret but it was.

Michael Jackson Pushes Telecom Over 2 Million
Thursday, 14 February 2008, 12:41 pm
Press Release: Telecom New Zealand

Michael Jackson Pushes Telecom Over 2 Million

Telecom’s Music Store hit 2 million tracks this week with the addition of Michael Jackson’s 25th Anniversary edition of the Thriller album.

The milestone gives Telecom customers access to New Zealand’s most extensive mobile catalogue of tracks for download to mobile.

David Craig, Telecom’s GM of Marketing says the vast range of tracks reflects the growing demand for access to music anywhere, anytime.

“One of the key benefits for customers downloading from the Telecom Music Store is accessibility. Our customers don’t have to be tied to a PC or need to connect. If they hear a tune they like playing somewhere; it can be theirs with the push of a button,” he says.

Telecom Music Store’s substantial catalogue has tracks available for purchase including chart hits, a back catalogue full of hits of different genres, and classic releases from 60s & 70s.

Recently upgraded, the Telecom Music Store now cross references purchases customers make with other music they may like to try.

“Telecom is committed to offering a great music service to New Zealanders - the best range of music content available for customers we possibly can,” says Mr Craig.
