Fulham Football club to get statue of MJ

football supporters near a statue of mj. not a good idea

That covers a lot of ground though. Football supporters aren't a group of people, a large ammount of the country are football fans.

It should be fine considering it is outside their ground.

Some of you can be just as ignorant towards other things as people can be about MJ, lead by example. You can't expect others to educate themselves on certain subjects before opening their mouths, if you arent doing it yourself. I see it a lot here. You know when they generalise us as weird obsessives? Same thing as you're doing.

This is great, but I think it would be better outside the o2 arena not a football stadium.

The whole point it is being built there is because Mohammed Al Fayed was Michael's friend and he owns Fulham football club. It's not a case of them wanting to build a statue of MJ and they have just decided to put it there.

You are right though, a statue outside the 02 would be cool.

not being sterotpyical or anything lol but think of thick ignorant idots who read tabloids ontop of the thug racist hoolligan element that follow football teams.

There will always be haters, tabloids and hooligans out there. You can't let these bad elements control your life. You have to keep doing what you believe is right.

In this case Al Fayed decided he wanted to honor his friend outside his own stadium. It is clear to me Al Fayed doesn't live in fear of the scum in society instead he does what he thinks is right from his heart. I think it's a wonderful gesture and I am very happy for Michael. :D

I also feel like that maybe is not the right place ?

Rio Ferdinand tweeted

Michael jackson statue outside fulham FC? I'm a huge jackson fan but why?! Surely there's a long list of players who deserve a statue b4 jackson

and before you hate on him, He is genuine when he says he loved mj.

I actually agree with Rio Ferdinand. I love Michael to pieces. But, I also agree there are many great great great football players who deserve to have a statue in the football club.

It's a nice gesture of Al Fayed. I know he means well.

It would of been fantastic if Al-Fayed still owned Harrods and the statue was in Harrods............

And Harrods is probably the best shop in the World (that's if you can afford the stuff)!!!!!

I'm with Elusive on this one. Anyone who knows me I'm a H.U.G.E. football fan, I've been an active home & away supporter of for past 4 years (as well as supporting them for 20 years). But...I'd question this whole idea on a number of levels.

No matter what football has its share of idiotic people who would do anything once the beer goggles are on. Why have a statue of a singer over a past (possibly legendary) football player of the club? (This is me with my football brain switched on before you shoot me!)

On the positive side. I've cycled past Craven Cottage twice on the Thames Bridges Bike Ride and it has really great views of the Thames so that would be a nice place to have it.

EDIT: Just remembered they've already got a statue of Johnny Haynes outside the ground.

There was an article about this in the Metro newspaper but they kept on calling him the Prince of Pop

^^^ I hope they at least respect it. I know some people will not agree or like it. But hopefully they'll understand this. MJ is truly a legend & he did help people being a humanitarian he was. Maybe Rio F. was right that an athlete should be there but its a tribute to honor MJ by his genuine friend. Hopefully they can monitor the statue if its being vandalized or disrespecting.

Bad idea - this statue is situated in the Hammersmith End of the ground where all the
die-hard Fulham Boys sit and they are rightly not happy that the chairman and reps have gone over their heads with the decision to unveil the statue, when the fans themselves had to pay for a statue of club legend Johnny Haynes to be commissioned.

This statue should be sited in a more neutral location which had connections to Michael so fans can visit it, like the O2 - Mike saw the second half of one match at Craven Cottage more than 10 years ago which hardly constitutes a solid connection to either the club or its supporters.

Whilst I think either the o2 or maybe even The Lyric or Hyde Park near the Peter Pan statue etc, I am happy that at last the UK will have an MJ statue.

I am looking forward to seeing what the statue will be like. I hope nothing happens to it, and hopefully it will not be easy to vandalise if you know what I mean? Like it's possible someone will think it's hilarious to place a traffic cone on his head which can easily and quickly be removed, but made in a way that is not so easy to graffiti on/break etc.

Anyone going to the unveiling? Me and Motsey will definitely be there.

Al Fayed, who was a close friend of Jackson, commissioned a statue in memory of the pop icon following his death in 2009.

The Fulham chief originally planned to erect it outside his Harrods store, but following the sale of the Knightsbridge landmark, he decided it should be situated at Craven Cottage.

The statue, depicting Jackson in one of his most iconic poses, will stand on the banks of the River Thames, adjacent to the stadium's Riverside and Hammersmith stands.

The statue will be unveiled on Sunday 3rd April before the Cottagers' home game against Blackpool.

Jackson did visit Craven Cottage as a guest of Al Fayed, who told his club's official website: "Michael Jackson was truly a legend, a term used too often in this modern world saturated in the hyperbole surrounding celebrity.

"He was my friend, a man with whom I shared many happy memories and who died a tragic and untimely death.

"He left behind a legacy of music so vast it takes one's breath away; from a precocious talent to an ingenuity and groundbreaking modernity that shall never be repeated.

"It shall often be imitated, but it will never be replicated.

"Michael Jackson was, and shall always remain, one of a kind.

"I hope that many fans of his will visit the statue at the Cottage from far and wide, and that Fulham fans will appreciate seeing the finest performer in the world in and amongst them, the finest fans in the world."

I know this may seem petty, but are u not supposed to state ur sorce when copying and pasting from another site? As ur post is word for word the same report from the Independent http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...-to-erect-michael-jackson-statue-2243773.html

Anyways, sorry, back to the subject. THIS IS F-ING AWESOME!!! I CAN'T WAIT, SO GONNA BE THERE. Just a shame they don't erect it a bit down the road outside the greatest team in the countries stadium =P

O2’s a better place. There's a real connection there.
Harrods is the other option, such an iconic landmark synonymous with the King of Pop.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><o:p></o:p>

I have to say i kinda agree with rio (and that's very hard for me to say as i hate him and Man U) I mean, while i feel MJ should have a statue in every country. As a football fan as well, i feel that, like Liverpool and other teams, u should only erect statues of ur legendary players outside the stadiums. As others have said, The O2 is probably the best place, or maybe even Wembley Stadium. I mean, i know its not the same one as MJ played at, but he set bare records there and if the o2 is in there, a place he barely even visited, let alone performed at, then wembley should be on the cards too. Unfortunately, Harrods is of the cards due to al fayed selling it.

Hughes defends Jackson statue

Mark Hughes has insisted Fulham chairman Mohamed Al Fayed had earned the right to erect a statue of Michael Jackson at Craven Cottage.

Al Fayed, a close friend of the late performer, has caused controversy after announcing he had decided to place the tribute to Jackson outside the Cottagers' stadium.

The statue was commissioned following Jackson's death in June 2009 and was due to be erected at Harrods before Al Fayed sold the Knightsbridge store.

The decision to relocate it to Craven Cottage is likely to divide opinion, with statues at football grounds generally reserved for club legends.

Jackson's links to Fulham are tenuous to say the least - he watched a game there as a guest of Al Fayed in 1999 - while the singer was also dogged by controversy during his lifetime.

But Cottagers boss Hughes refused to criticise Al Fayed, saying: "In fairness to the chairman, he's fully supported this club for a long time now, put in something like £200million. And if he wants to make that gesture to somebody who he knew personally then who am I to pass comment on it."

bit of a silly idea in my opinion, have it placed in a meaningful place like the o2 or somewere....ignorant football fans will just ruin it!

This has caused massive debate understandably but Al Fayed comissioned the statue so he can put it where he likes. Would I prefer it to be somewhere else, of course, but he can put it where he likes.

i guess rio isnt aware of mjs friendship with mo.and orignally it was gonna go in harrods b4 he sold it. anyway the petitions have already started to stop the statue. i guess mo fayed got what he wanted interms of publicity but at whos expense as normal.

I wrote Mr Fayed a message thanking him for wanting to honor Michael with such a beautiful tribute . Sometimes fans are so selfish and self- centered. It not about them. Its about Mr Fayed personal friendship with Michael and he should be able to honor Michael in a way he see fit. We have no right to tell him where or how he should pay tribute to his own friend. I find the fan petition rude myself. Its the heart and motive of ones action that is important. Some fans ignored and disrespected the Love and devotion in this tribute. It went completly over theirr heads. I wish fans whould think before they act.

I wish I could be there to see the statue of Michael when its unveiled
Of you attend Please take lots of pictures for us :)

I did the sorry thing of reading through piles of threads on Fulham fan boards both on the official site and fans site. They are royally pissed by this and I fear that they'll either tear it down or deface it beyond recognition. There were only one or two people actually defending MJ and his character which was even sadder :(

I may be going to the stadium this Sunday so I'll post pics if I do go.

Your forgetting that Football now is very much policed and monitored
Anyone caught defacing the statue would face criminal charges i'm sure

not only that there is strict strict rules against hooligans in english premier league football today.. I mean most of em are banned for a longer period of time..
thats why we dont see so much trouble on the arenas now a days..

Why do people keep saying they should build it outside the 02?

Mohammed Al Fayed owns Fulham football club, it makes no sense for him to want to build it outside the 02.

It is not a case off.....'I want to build a statue of Michael Jackson, where can I put it'. It is being built for the fact that he want's a status of MJ outside his home ground.

And I go to football matches all the time, in fact I went to watch Liverpool at Anfield last night. Football hooliganism is quite rare nowadays, ESPECIALLY at someones home ground.

as much as i think the football ground isn't the best place for it, i still think its an awesome idea and should happen. But once again, this once proud fan community is doing everything in its power to kill mj's lagacy with him..... There are certain "fans" petioning to get it scrapped http://www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/movemichaelsstatue I mean, seriously, do these ppl not want future generations to know who MJ is? Fucking idiots are begining to piss me off!
