Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary - Estate Announcement Page 66

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

I thought it was a master stroke on Spikes part to include the Ebony interview in Bad25. I hope he does the same on OTW with the Sylvia Chase interview.

Oh yes you are talking now i love that interview. I do not want interview of ppls who has nothing to do with OTW please.

We make still see it nice Christmas gift.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Not that it really matters but when Michael said Motown 25 was pretty much spontaneous I think it's pretty obvious it was not.. I believe he stated that to build the performance as in.. (The most famous performance of all time was spontaneous and was THAT good).. For hype I believe. His spontaneous movements are different than what he showed that night.

Regarding Off The Wall Documentary we are at 36 years since the album release... I hope to get something soon! not wait til the 40th anniversary.. and why we have not gotten a triumph concert released is beyond me... When Mike was around it was my guess that it was his perfectionism not being happy with them enough to release... That's what I tried telling myself, but there are things to "fix" that.. We did get the Dangerous concert and he was confident enough to do it live on HBO. so there goes that...

I would love a box set of each era.. 1. album 2. concert supporting that album 3. documentary surrounding album.. Even toss in a cool booklet and packaging THAT I would wait in line for

In the bold i would love to see this too would be nice.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

anybody been able to contact Richard about this?

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

for his 70th birthday they should release a box set, white & gold.. the only title being 'Michael Jackson' contents filled with studio albums in 7.1 DTS including unreleased tracks for each era & 2002-2009 outtakes. Concert Blu-Rays, definitive short film collection with making of's, uncut studio footage + 'This Is It: The Experience' featuring every song rehearsed plus discussions etc.! just an idea.

In a year 2028 (his 70th) there is no blu-rays, box sets etc:D

I don't know what do we have in 14 years time, but while we are waiting, could you ask Spike Lee when OTW documentary is out. My patience is running thin:yes:

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Because everything will be streamed online by then :)

14 years is a long time, so streaming could be thing in the past too:)

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

I am so disappointed with Sony! Last week, the beatles released a reissue of "1" with a bonus blu ray of all the beatles videos and bonus videos most previously unreleased!! All restored from the original negatives and all remixed in 5.1 surround sound from the original multitracks!!

What do us Mj fans get??
NOTHING!!!!

Wake up Sony!!!! Michael is a legendary artist and his work is not being treated as it should be!!!! We get shitty remixes that nobody cares about and videos nor remastered or remixed in any way!!!

Michaels short films need to be remastered a d remixed into 5.1 and put in blu ray!!!
Every other record company is putting you to shame with their standard of product!!!! Just look at the beatles reissues, or the rolling stones reissues.... I could do a better job at delivering a better product to the mj fan than you. Shame on you Sony!!! I hope Mjs family see sense and set up their own company and distribute michaels music that way. I am so angry that we are not getting anything this year!!!
This is not me being selfish!!! It would ha e been the perfect year for a HISTORY reissue. Or Off The Wall. You really dropped the ball AGAIN!!!!!!
Since Mj died, sub par products. It seems you dont give a damn about his legacy. I am done with Sony.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Its coming but no word when:timer:

Snippet from Spike's recent interview:

What's next for you?

We were working overtime [on Chi-raq]. On the side, I'm finishing a documentary on the making of Michael Jackson's Off the Wall album, for the Michael Jackson estate and Sony Records. I already did Bad 25, and hopefully the estate will ask me to come back and do Thriller, and then I'll complete the trilogy.

Nice. So it IS Estate's project after all. Interesting. And I hope this will be much much better than Bad 25. Hopefully no poor VHS clips in this one, no unrelated questions about whereabouts of the people being interviewed when MJ died and no Bieber and co.

I do remember writing this wish somewhere on this board!

I truly hope Lee will be allowed to do so because OTW, Thriller, and Bad are a trilogy of works under the Jackson/Jones collaboration and they need to be documented appropriately!

Best news I heard today! I will continue to wish the Thriller documentary and Lee as the filmmaker for it into existence!!!

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

So still no word on this yet ?

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

So there's an example of an artist's music videos being restored in HD from the negatives now!

That's very interesting. Anyone have any more info about the Beatles project? I dare say for an artist as visual as MJ then it is surely more appropriate that his works are given this treatment. I have been praying for a blu-ray collection of the videos for years now.

They'e showing commercials for it now-guess it's for Christmas ideas-but it looks really good. I've read a couple of interviews today with Paul also promoting it.

YES!!! With any luck, after that trilogy is done, he will be asked to do "Dangerous/HIStory/Invincible." I think he'd be the one to delve into the darker side of that music and the personal interpretations. And he has a personal link to it with 'They Don't Care About Us'. I think he would do an excellent job. Truly loved BAD 25-just wish it were longer.

I know he loves the Jackson 5, Jacksons, and Quincy albums-I wonder how he feels about the later work and if he'd do it.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

It they released it like Bad 25 (music and documentary), we would have to wait 4 more years to 40th anniversary of OTT, but if it is stand alone, we might get it sooner.
What comes to Thriller stuff, 2017 is 35th anniversary of Thriller, so if there is something coming out then, its better be on the works already.

OnirMJ, there are some valid points in Paulshorty1983’s post. I would say that it is not simply Sony but, a Sony/Estate collaboration that is causing the frustration. Hopefully this partnership will terminate with some stellar offerings to the purchasing public.

With regards to this thread, I stated previously that I am concerned with how Lee’s OTW documentary will be promoted and distributed to the public. While there was some success for Lee’s Bad25, Sony/Estate did fail Lee (and in turn Michael) in how the DVD was sold (and continues to be sold) and how it was released in various formats instead of a standard option globally. Example: theatrical release in one region that was earlier than the U.S. theatrical release and television airing.

I wished for Blu-Ray and received Vision.

The Beatles re-issue is simply amazing. Consistently offering stellar products to the public. Below are just two items; there are many more online.

The Beatles‘ bestselling best-of collection, The Beatles 1, is getting the deluxe reissue treatment this fall.
Due in stores Nov. 6, the newly expanded Beatles 1 makes a number of changes to the original release, chief among them the addition of dozens of promotional videos — all newly restored, many being made commercially available for the first time. According to a press release, “An 18-person team of film and video technicians and restoration artists was assembled by Apple Corps to undertake painstaking frame-by-frame cleaning, color-grading, digital enhancement and new edits that took months of dedicated, ’round-the-clock work to accomplish.”

On the audio front, fans can look forward to hearing new stereo mixes of the album, which collects 27 of the band’s biggest hits, as well as mixes in 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS HD surround audio.

The reissue will be available in a variety of configurations, including single-disc CD, DVD, and Blu-ray versions, as well as CD/DVD and CD/Blu-ray combo packs and a two-LP vinyl edition. Die-hard fans will also have the chance to spring for The Beatles 1+, a deluxe package that adds a bonus DVD or Blu-ray featuring alternate versions of many videos as well as “an expanded 124-page illustrated hardcover book which includes ‘an appreciation’ of The Beatles’ groundbreaking films and videos by music journalist and author Mark Ellen and extensive, detailed track/video annotation by music historian and author Richard Havers.”

The Beatles “1” was originally released in 2000 and quickly became the fastest selling album of all time. Featuring 27 of the band’s most significant singles, all of which reached #1 in the US or UK charts, this brand new 2DVD/CD set represents the ultimate collectors edition of The Beatles “1”, featuring all 27 tracks on CD, all 27 promo videos on DVD1, and an additional 23 videos on DVD2, including alternate versions, as well as rarely seen and newly restored films and videos.

All the videos have been beautifully restored up to 4K resolution by a team of film and video technicians and restoration artists who have undertaken painstaking frame-by-frame cleaning, colour-grading, digital enhancement and new edits that took months of dedicated, ‘round-the-clock work to accomplish.

This stunning 2DVD/CD set boasts an expanded 124-page illustrated hardcover book, and also includes exclusive audio commentary and filmed introductions by Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr respectively. 1+ also features fantastic new stereo and 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS HD surround audio mixes by Giles Martin and Sam Okell at Abbey Road Studios.

CD/DVD1 songs and videos include: Love Me Do, I Want To Hold Your Hand, Can’t Buy Me Love, I Feel Fine, Ticket To Ride, Yesterday, Day Tripper, We Can Work It Out, Paperback Writer, Penny Lane, All You Need Is Love, Hey Jude, Something, Come Together, and more!

DVD2 videos include: Twist & Shout, Please Please Me, Rain, Strawberry Fields Forever, A Day In The Life, Hey Bulldog, and Free As A Bird.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

I have been following the release of the new Beatles collection quite closely (haven't got my hands on it yet, might do so around Christmas!) and they've done a REALLY good job with it.

Some of the much earlier material that was performed on television is understandably not the best of quality (but its the early 60s, give 'em a break) but some of the more later material that was shot on film looks absolutely GORGEOUS. Case in points:

What I also really admire is that they released a whole short documentary on the restoration process for the film, like this one on how they repaired and restored the film/tape elements that the videos were sourced from:

I've seen unboxing videos of the deluxe edition which contains a really nice hardcover book, and Beatles fans and critics alike have been singing praises about the booklet, which gives a great amount of information about each and every video included in the set. There's also a CD of the '1' album, all the songs have been remixed and from my brief listen on the iTunes Store, they've done a great job with the remixing process (for the record, I mean actually gone into the original multitracks and altered the mix of the vocals/instruments, not bring in a DJ hahah).

I don't necessarily feel I should criticise the Estate just yet because for all we know, they may be working on a project like this right now... but if they haven't, I'd be very disappointed. Once again The Beatles have set the bar; a bar I'd very much like to see Michael Jackson's Estate meet.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Well, let's not forget that the Beatles has not got this kind treatment until about the mid '90s either. Hopefully Michael's Estate will get there with time too.

it may be better if this documentary isn't even made because it will probably be watered down to such a degree it won't really capture the essence of how great Michael Jackson actually was then

I believe the opposite. OTW deserves to be lauded and Thriller, all the more so.

There are fans who did not experience Michaelmania/Thrillermania and a documentary would be a grand way for those fans to have a feel for the time period. Lee also brings a refreshing respective as he lived through it. I believe Lee would be a grand choice for this task. He is campaigning to complete the trilogy. The fact that he realizes a trilogy of sorts exists is encouraging to me.

YES!!! With any luck, after that trilogy is done, he will be asked to do "Dangerous/HIStory/Invincible." Personally, I will be fine if Lee is allowed to complete the Jackson/Jones collaboration and no more. I know Lee did work with Michael after Thriller for Get On The Bus and he was quite appreciative of that. I personally cannot speak to his appreciation of the later works as opposed to the earlier works. I am unsure it matters actually.

Yeah. I was going to include in my post originally (must've deleted it somewhere) that Beatles fans had actually be asking for a collection like this for many, many years. They waited a good deal of time too but the end result was worth it.

Not that I'm saying the Estate can take forever and a day because while I'm really happy to wait (being a patient guy), I really really hope that the Estate have plans for this sort of project. :p.

Tbh I don't think that's a valid excuse for them to use. Especially in this day and age where technology is at its highest point and there have been multiple artists, may I add legendary artists, that has had this same kind of treatment. They only need to do a quick google search to see what kind of methods and approaches they could be talking with these anniversary albums.
