Jackson's IMMORTAL tour to thrill Chinese fans

Official Chinese tour news:

http://china.org.cn/arts/2013-05/07/content_28752173.htm

The Estate of Michael Jackson and Cirque du Soleil will bring Michael Jackson The IMMORTAL World Tour to Shanghai's iconic Mercedes-Benz Arena from August 15 to 18, it was announced today.

AEG Live Asia will host this electrifying, once-in-a-lifetime production. As a riveting fusion of visuals, dance, music, and fantasy, The IMMORTAL World Tour will immerse audiences in the story of one of the 20th century's defining artists.

Written and directed by long time Michael Jackson collaborator, Jamie King, this show contextualizes Michael's artistic legacy in the tradition of the legendary Cirque du Soleil. Created for the enjoyment of lifelong fans as well as those experiencing Michael's creative genius for the first time, the show captures the essence, soul and inspiration of the King of Pop, celebrating a talent that transcends generations.

During his storied career, Michael Jackson enjoyed a special relationship with the people of China. He was one of the first western music artists to be embraced by the Chinese mass public when the country was only first reopening to the world in the early 1980s; and Chinese fans continue to share their love for his genius with the millions of Michael Jackson fans across the world.

Although an icon in China, Michael never had an opportunity to perform live on the Chinese mainland during his lifetime. Now, thanks to the Estate of Michael Jackson and Cirque du Soleil, the IMMORTAL World Tour will bring a legend back to the stage and gives thousands a chance to enjoy the music of this creative genius in Shanghai.

The IMMORTAL World Tour brings the audience through a fantastical world, where they discover Michael's inspiration and the wellspring of his creativity. Through a series of scenes, the secrets of Michael's inner world are unlocked, from his love of music and dance, fairy tales and magic, to the fragile beauty of nature.

The underpinnings of The IMMORTAL World Tour are Michael Jackson's powerful, inspirational music and lyrics -- the driving force behind the show -- brought to life with extraordinary power and breathless intensity. Through unforgettable performances Michael Jackson The IMMORTAL World Tour underscores Michael's global messages of love, peace and unity.

The production is woven together by more than 35 of Michael's songs including classics such as Beat It, Billie Jean, and Earth Song, alongside popular hits from the Jackson 5 era. The musical component of the show was fashioned by Musical Designer Kevin Antunes and Musical Director Greg Phillinganes, who worked with Michael for over 25 years.

Using mash-ups, remixes and new arrangements, The IMMORTAL World Tour brings a breathtaking array of material to the stage, incorporating elements from his many artistic periods. The result is a complete soundscape, assembled from hours of recordings and unreleased material. The audience will hear Michael's fingers click and his feet stamp, creating an engaging and intimate experience.

Michael's beautiful, rich voice dominates the mix, and soars over the playing of a live band. The stellar on-stage band includes Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett, who played drums for Michael for 30 years, as well as a host of musicians that enjoyed a close, personal relationship with the star.

"It starts with the music," says Director Jamie King. "Michael's voice is what drives the show. I have the opportunity to carry on Michael's legacy, to take all that energy – all that he was and was going to be – and build it into this production. Our goal is not to simply cover Michael, but to take his music to a whole new level. "

In paying tribute to Michael's legacy, Jamie King has also utilized dance choreography, video projections, and creative storylines that evoke his phenomenal music and peerless stagecraft. Video projections integrate footage of Michael's on-stage performances, making his presence an almost-palpable part of the show. The set and costumes are masterpieces of conceptual design, bringing together iconic styles and objects from Michael's life, immersing the audience completely in his remarkable story.

"Michael Jackson is an artist that left an indelible mark on the history of pop music," said Adam Wilkes, Senior Vice President of AEG Live Asia. "Just years after his passing, fans in Shanghai will have their best ever opportunity to experience the magic of seeing Michael on stage. This multi-media spectacular embodies the spirit of his music, and celebrates his legacy for his Chinese fans. No performance of this type has ever before been seen on a Shanghai stage, and no show will ever come as close to recreating the golden age of the undisputed King of Pop."

WORKING on Cirque du Soleil's extravagant Michael Jackson stage tribute was a "bittersweet experience" for Jackson's long-time collaborator, Travis Payne.

"Not a day went by without me really missing him," says the Emmy-nominated choreographer. "I had never gone through a Michael Jackson process without him. That was very tough at times. But the end result was worth it."

Payne was reunited with costume designer Zaldy Goco, drummer Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett and many other members of Jackson's creative team for The Immortal World Tour, an arena show inspired by the pop star's music.

"There have been many productions since Michael's passing to celebrate him but none with so many of us coming together," says Payne.

"I really think that's why it works. For many of us, the last time we worked together was with Michael. I certainly hope he would be proud of what we have done."

Payne says Jackson was a long-time fan of Cirque du Soleil and had always intended to work with the company which has its headquarters in Montreal.

"The opportunity just never presented itself," says the choreographer, who sees Cirque and Jackson's shared appreciation of fantasy, escapism and sheer scale as an excellent fit.

Michael Jackson never did anything by halves. Cirque has a similarly healthy appreciation of extraordinary production values - which explains why four jumbo jets are required to carry the cast, crew, costumes and props. (In Europe, the production travelled in 38 trucks.)
The tour even carries its own washing machines and driers to take proper care of more than 250 costumes (the dancers haveup to eight changes).

Among the props is a giant, 1.8m white spangled glove and a pair of 2.4m-long penny loafers.

At the core of the show, however, is Jackson's music. Cirque has unprecedented access to Jackson's master tapes.

More than 35 songs - including Dangerous, Thriller, Beat It, They Don't Care About Us, Man In the Mirror, Don't Stop Till You Get Enough and Billie Jean - are interpreted by acrobats, contortionists, dancers and musicians.

The stripped-back vocal track is so pristine, you can hear Jackson snap his fingers and stomp his feet.

The tour, has now been on the road for 18 months. It has been so successful, a second show, MJ1, is opening in Las Vegas this weekend.

Payne, also known for his work with Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Madonna, collaborated with Jackson for more than 15 years.
The choreographer worked on the This Is It tour at the time of the singer's death, and was recently called to give evidence in a civil hearing concerning Jackson's death.

The experience brought back painful memories. Payne sees The Immortal World Tour as an opportunity to recast Jackson as more than a tragic figure.

"All great artists have a certain amount of tragedy - that's where the art comes from," he says.

"But with Michael it has been so polarising. There has been so much speculation about him over the years, because he was such a private person.

"I feel like we have gotten so far away from his art in past years, now we can just return to the great songs and the great imagery and the great ideas that endure."

Having said that, he says the tour is more than a faithful "tribute show".

"You really can't do a Michael Jackson show without Michael Jackson," says Payne. "This is our interpretation of what he would have done. What we have learned from him - personally and through his work. To translate that into new experiences."
