Look who’s trying to get a piece of that glove
Take the glossed out jheri curls, high-pitched anthems, screeching fans in tears (and a few carried out on a gurney at shows in far away lands), and you got the cult of Michael Jackson. Twenty-five years ago, Thriller became crack for pop-loving 80s babies. Now those babies are grown, and many have went on to have their own successful career…with Jackson’s style smeared all over it. In celebration of this week’s reissue of Thriller, VIBE.com looks at our top five favorite ***** copycats.

5. Omarion

Besides starting their careers before they reached Roller-coaster height, O and MJ have always placed special attention on their two-stepping tricks. To make up for callow vocals, Omarion relies heavily on impressive mini-Mike impersonations. However, while he breaks a sweat straining for the attention of an older audience, Michael transitions seamlessly within a fan base ranging from 6 to 60. Note to Omarion -- being just a PYT doesn’t always cut it.

4. Chris Brown
Let’s be honest: Chris Brown is Michael Jackson on crack – a red-bulled, back-flipping, screen-cheesin’ Michael Jackson. From music videos to live performances, C. Breezy never fails to throw in a tribute to his idol. For a young’n in the game, it’s a smart move that’s done him well. All that’s left now is crossing the border of obsession to transgression.

3. Ne-Yo
Three words: Because of You. The draping harmonies, the tilted fedora, the pelvic thrust, it’s blatantly clear who Ne-Yo’s main influence is. While others stick to pure imitation, Ne-Yo opts to explore the middle ground between himself and *****. The results have proven to be effective, separating Ne-Yo from the duplicators. When MJ’s requesting your contribution to his album, you know hours of perfecting Beat It adlibs has truly paid off.

2. Justin Timberlake
Reppin’ the lighter side of MJ fever, Justin’s Future Sex/Love Sounds blessed him with six top twenty hits from a single album, a feat only achieved once by Jackson himself. With sweet soprano drawls and fancy fly footwork soaked with *****’s juice, Justin has led the most identical career to that of his inspiration. The former boy-band front man turned international sex god has showed no limits in his like for Mike. If MJ himself hasn’t noticed, Janet certainly has.

1. Usher
As arguably the father of our generation's pop princes, it’s only right that Usher be deemed the son of King Jackson. With about 40 million albums sold worldwide, Ursh has successfully converted the hype of MJ fame into a grandiose self-made empire. During the Confessions craze of ‘04, some even double-dared to say that Usher had replaced Michael as the greatest entertainer of all time. With a collabo due out later this year, father and son will put history to the test and raise the bar of pop notoriety. Copy that.

Since never. Usher said he and T-Pain and Michael might do a song for his album, but he said nothing had happened and it was said that Usher really meant that he and T-Pain would be sampling one of Michael's songs, lol.

They're just all a bunch of wanna be's who are keeping the stage warm until Michael decides to step back on.

I thought Usher said that he asked Michael and he's still waiting to see if Michael is up for the collabo

yeah thats exactly what he said. no mention of sampling anything. he clearly said he wants mj to feature and if mikes up for it, it will happen.

Yeah right, lol.
NOBODY said jack sh!t about sampling a Jackson song. Usher said he wanted to do a collabo with MJ and the song might feature T-Pain.
Don't get it twisted.

Hollaback.

The voice of reason. :)

Usher said that he would like to work with MJ on his new cd. I hope that happens.

The list was on point and funny. LOL.

Lol, you guys are so defensive. There was talk, I remember clearly, of it being a sample. I didn't say that's what it was, I said there was talk of that being more likely, and there was. Nothing was ever confirmed either. I'm just repeating what I remember reading. Either way, Usher doesn't deserve to be on the same record as Michael. His ass will get outsung in a bad way.

Usher is actually the only person out that deserves a spot on MJ cd. Who else do you consider as worthy? Usher has earned his way by hard work and dedication. Michael is nearly 50 and Usher is his generation's Michael Jackson.

(cough) Uh, no.

The next Michael Jackson will be more original that THAT. lol (not trying to get into a not original/original debate...but lets just say Usher is gonna have to do more than he's doing to be the MJ of this generation lol)

Man, people are taking this list too seriously. The list was on point.

People say that certain artists are "The MJ of Today", or "The MJ of their generation", well that's simply not true. The artists who are said to be the MJ's of today are just copying/ripping off of Michael, so in essence they're really closer to impersonators rather than MJ's of today. There's only one Michael Jackson, and the reason why he is so great is because he's not only extremely talented but INNOVATIVE! Michael's dance steps were all for the most part original (with the exception of his James Brown moves), and all of his music videos were original too, instead of today's artists just copying his singing, dancing, and music video styles. In order for someone to TRULY be called "The Michael Jackson of their generation", they have to not only be extremely talented in both singing and dance, but also INNOVATIVE and ORIGINAL, making music no one has ever heard before, dancing in ways unimaginable, making incredible original music videos that no one has ever seen before, that kind of stuff. From what I've seen, NO ONE has done this, therefore NO ONE in the music industry today has yet to be called "The next/new Michael Jackson" in my books, what they should be called is simply just "Michael Jackson fans", or "Michael Jackson understudies".

In short, there is no new King of Pop. Whether there will be someone as talented and innovative as Michael in the future remains to be seen.

Usher isn't the Michael Jackson of his generation, he isn't remotely talented enough to even be mentioned along side Michael. Plus the era of superstars is dead and gone. Consider Michael the last. Usher is a poor man's Michael Jackson with minimal talent as both a singer and a dancer and very little musical talent in terms of composing and writing, if any. Michael's kind of talent has only ever come along once, there's never been a world class singer and dancer at the same time before or since Michael. That's more then just rare, that's like a miracle. Usher's more talented then a lot of these imitators, I'll give him that, but overall, he's weak and not even as good as Bobby Brown.

Agreed! Usher, CB, Omarion, etc. have talent but they are NOT the new MJ! Someone stated that "Michael is the last of the great song and dance men..." and I believe that. It may be many, many years before someone half as magnificent as MJ comes along.

Michael Jackson is the definition of real super talented mega star!!
His career low is considered others' career peak.
He's phenomenal, magnificent, magical.
He's the kind of artist who'd only come once in 500years.

Exactly! So true. I really did like the article though. the person who wrote it obviously knows that they are all imitators but they could never compete with the real thing. I mean, I like that they do want to imitate him because everyone knows that's what they are doing, and it looks good for Michael. It's flattering to him that he's so good, people want to imitate him. But no one can ever take his place.
