^ I agree on what you said almost everything but the part you wrote "something that is popular is never going to be really artistic." Michael is one the few exceptions of being a such a mainstream entertainer that is considered an Artist in all the extension of the word, even none MJ fans believe he's created true works of art.

I really wish all of you are right about Gaga, she hasn't earned the right to be eternal musically talking, she thinks through her lyrics, her actions and behavior has something to say and stand for but most of it are so laughable and questionable. She doesn't reach the level of being inspiring or a role model yet.
It really got me angry when the moron media started to call her "the new Michael Jackson" and we all know he's a way beyond, he was already eternal before 2009.

^I was talking in the context of this day and age. Michael's music spanned across decades, and this discussion is about today's artists, which Michael obviously does not fit in with. My comments in my previous post are relevant to this day and age, and in the context of our times, artistic things are seldom, if ever, popular.

Yes, I think gaga is the most overrated musician of modern times. People seem to have some sort of amnesia over all the acts she's blatantly and shamelessly copied. Then of course, more bothersome, are all the lies she tells to get people to buy into her whole "artistic and misunderstood" persona, which is a total fabrication. She claims she was teased in school for being/dressing different, etc. and that she's struggled real hard when she's naught but a poor little rich girl who went to the same school as the Hilton sisters, and by all evidence was fairly popular, "normal," and well-liked in High School. She even made an appearance on some MTV show [obviously staged too lol, although comically so] complaining over some food she ordered. Oh and curiously enough she was dressed normal at the show, and in all the old photographs there are of her--you could have picked her off the Jersey Shore cast. She also seems fairly friendly towards Paris Hilton, who was fairly well-liked in school, despite claiming she didn't hang out with all the "popular" girls. If she really was bullied in school, like I was for pretty much my entire stay in The System, there would be no sum of money sufficient enough to justify pretending to be on civil terms with one of the people who either bullied you or did nothing to help you cope with it/stop it. Yet the disgust is obviously not there, for all she claims the alleged bullying affected her... Weird, huh.

Her parents also love her from the looks of it and her father even offered to pay for her apartment while she was pursuing her act. Therefore, she had everything in the world she could possibly have, every luxury and privilege at a time in this country's history when houses were being foreclosed left and right, and people were losing their livelihoods, etc. Nothing in her life was f-cked up like, say, Eminem's life, where he really had it tough being raised by a single [and psycho, it seems] mother in a really sh-t part of the country, and really being teased in school for being an odd duck, and then of course the fact he did not exactly fit in with his preferred genre of music--THAT is an uphill battle. (Of course Michael also had several uphill battles and was also from a poor dysfunctional family in a bad part of the country, and had to really struggle and work hard for what he wanted).

So I really don't see where she's getting all her misunderstood and struggling crap from, and why everyone laps it all up like it's the gospel when an examination of her life proves everything false.

Her lyrics are also shallow and without artistic quality, even going as far back as her pre-Gaga work. Some of them are cute, but they're juvenile and the reality of who she is really fails to live up to what she claims she is, hence overrated.

I think it's shallow of the media to compare her to Michael simply because he dressed in an unusual way and she [like others] does the same in a now lame and beat-to-death attempt to get people's attention. Musically, they can't even begin to be compared--Michael was a genius and had great vision and artistry. Gaga is of average vocal talent and at least can play an instrument, but others (such as Evanescence lead singer Amy Lee) leave her in the dust as far as vocal talent, lyric quality, and instrument performance are concerned. They're just not as popular because they don't sing catchy music about boys or partying.

I'm not denying Gaga has talent--she does, and she deserves to have a record deal. What I have a problem with is this inflated image she, the media, and her dumb fans have of her. It's laughable, really...but it is also starting to fade, and fast. Her singles are no longer selling because she's doing the same trick over and over again, and it's getting boring even for the so-called "little monsters." Only the really die-hard ones support her flop after flop, but what she needs is the support of the general public if she wants to keep spending money the way she does.

What I would suggest is for her to finally drop the dumb act no one with an IQ above 70 believes, and to go back to where she came from, which is the whole ballad song/piano playing combo. That's what she does best, and if she can really pen down some sincere lyrics instead of all that pseudo-rebellious/artistic crap she insists on putting out, I think she could make a good place for herself in a more permanent way.

It's obvious from her dwindling sales something needs to change, and fast. Those who don't evolve get left behind.

As for the others, they're not as overrated as Gaga is. They've been around longer [with the exception of Swift] and so at least have some sort of history of previous success to justify a solid fan base. But I don't know anyone who is claiming Rihanna is the next Michael Jackson, or comparing her to anyone really out of her league--she usually gets compared to Beyonce, and that's it, so that's a bit overrated since Beyonce is obviously the better choice, but it's not a ludicrous comparison. She has gotten pretty annoying with her whole faux bad girl act, though, and that song "S&M" was a crime against humanity for which she should never be forgiven.

Beyonce I honestly have never heard much said about in regards to comparisons to singers way above her league, at least not from the general public. I think some delusional fan of hers once made a blog entry where he tried [and failed] to argue Beyonce was the best diva of all time or something, but like I said that wasn't a media-approved/dispensed POV so it can hardly count as her being overrated. She has a very good voice, though. She sang Ave Maria, and I recall it being very good (although not as good as Tarja Turunen's take on the song, not that most people know who that is).

Swift I think is at least honest in her song-writing, and while it's not that great, she's also much younger than most of the people on this list, so I think it would be unfair to compare a novice like her to near veterans like Britney Spears and Beyonce. They're also not even in the same age group as her, and yet Swift can out-write every single one of them lyrically, not that this is too hard to do. I personally find her music to be somewhat annoying, and I only like one song of hers [if only for the Shakespeare and Hawthorne references]. Otherwise, I think she's pretty mediocre and somewhat overrated, but no one's claiming she's the next Tim McGraw or Dolly Parton[I hope], so she's not as grossly overrated as Gaga is.

Yes, this is one Hell of a post, but I thought it necessary to thoroughly explain my views and why I hold them.

I'm a Gaga fan but I agree with much of what you said. The thing is, I don't hold Gaga to a high standard. I enjoy her for what she is, not what she's made out to be by her crazy little monsters. Those kids are scary! A bunch of emo 14 year olds who need a hug and truly think she's their mommy monster who will love and take care of them. It's pathetic! They eat up everything she does and act as if she's Jesus Christ in the flesh. She can do no wrong whatsoever. It's sickening. I am a fan but I am absolutely not a delusional little monster. Ugh!

Probably what I'm gonna say it's a bit out off topic but the lies you told she said Severus, makes me despise the character she created and being angrier at her as well. My only argument to tell her behavior, the way she dresses and what supposedly she stands for are laughable and questionable, I've never bought her act because it's clearly a publicity stunt to make her more shocking and popular with "her little monsters" but what you're telling goes beyond for being more convincing than my argument to consider her fake or a fraud. How she dares to use the flag of being bullied/misunderstood if she really wasn't? I mean, there are million of young women, men that were really bullied; she should be greatful she didn't go throug that hell that many of us went through, instead of wanting people to feel sorry for her by telling lies! She was fortunated for having parents that respect her or understand her; my parents don't respect me for being athiest, she was fortunated for being fairly popular, not being ridiculized for being different; my elementary and middle school years were miserable because parents didn't teach their bastard children there are different people for different circumstances. Those bastards made fun of the way I walked and my walker calling it "The Batmovile", they'd grab it to play races eventhough I told them not to do so, I didn't have friends becuase they didn't ant to play or talk to me, they'd steal my stuff and when I'd got good grades, the'd tell me I got them because the teachers felt sorry/pitty for me.I'm telling this because it mustn't exist discrimination for the fact of being different and it's not fair she's using alleged hard/difficult years of his youth to be more popular. Sorry but I really needed to vent my anger and dissapointment towards her...

I agree and I don't hold her to a high standard either, I think she's okay musically speaking, no great thing like her more die-hard fans want to make her out to be, but not bad and definitely not untalented. What I have a problem with are the lies she's told to basically market the image of being misunderstood, etc. I don't think it's very fair, simply because I, like Snow White luvs Peter Pan, have had to put up with the general public's idiocy and disregard since my elementary school days, and to have someone claim to be "one of you" and have the reality of things be much different is an insult onto itself.

I'm not denying she's had to work to get where she's at, but the whole bit about being bullied and misunderstood is total BS. She had her fair share of friends in school and she also didn't dress weird [another thing she tried to claim], she was no Paris Hilton, but it's obvious she was fairly well-liked if there are pictures of her surrounded by people who seem to be enjoying her company. Just like most normal kids.

Fairly normal-looking, because she was and still is common. She's also dressed fairly normally, if perhaps a bit retro in some shots--but there are tons of kids at my school who like the 80s stuff, so that's not exactly original or something to make fun of someone for. She kind of looks like an old ex friend of mine in these pics, actually. =o

I told you her die-hard fans were delusional. I don't have a problem at all with people who like her music, Hell, I think some of her songs are catchy, but those people who claim it's art and lyk ttly original are just living in a whole other planet.

^^OMFG, she looks one member of the Jersey Shore girls :lmao:, that's not looking weird as she'd claimed, that's looking like a girl's next door! Not only her little monsters are delusional, Gaga herself is as well because I've heard her saying what she does is artistic and original when we've seen she's has stolen acts from another female performers, Bette Midler performed New York, New York dressed like a mermaid in a wheel chair first or Annie Lenox was the 1st one to create a male alter ego wearing black and white clothing to perform Sweet Dreams.BTW Severus Snape, I loved your last paragraph! :)

Gaga was a fairly attractive and completely normal girl, living a privileged existence before she sought out superstardom. She was in no way bullied or teased. She's literally come up with so many conflicting stories about her teenage angst but about her rise to being a pop star as well. Basically, she's a compulsive liar. Again, I'm a fan but I noticed very early on that she was rather shady. Gaga has successfully manipulated the media and most importantly, her legions of adoring and obsessed fans. I, however, can see through the BS. I enjoy her for the music and I do think she's got a kind heart, but I don't like how she feels the need to create stories (instead of being herself) to get ahead. Lady Gaga is a very generic girl in her daily life, but she is talented musically. She never went around wearing crazy outfits or anything of that nature in which she speaks about. The truth is, she's the opposite of what she preaches and that's kind of sad and is why I can't fully commit to her. It also doesn't help that her fan base is full of crazy people.

Totally right. I commend you for liking her music all the same--you shouldn't let anyone tell you what to listen to, etc. I like some of her stuff too like I said. I think it's catchy and it obviously sells well, but to go so far as to call it art when it is clearly commercial I think is a bit insulting to the term. Well, she is a good performer and part of The Act is coming up with something more intriguing than "I'm a rich Catholic schoolgirl with filthy rich parents and basically a talented albeit less attractive version of Paris Hilton, Jersey Shore style."

You know, it isn't only Gaga who does this, though. Record deals have a way of changing people and their music. For example, two of my favourite singers:

Taylor Momsen Before RD:
taylor-momsen-in-2007.jpg

Momsen After RD:
taylor-momsen-onitsuka.jpg

Taylor has also tried to claim she's really "always been this way," a lie so utterly transparent no one with an IQ over 70 believes it, even if the person in question is a The Pretty Reckless fan [which I most definitely am and I adore the band, but c'mon]. It just so coincidentally happened that as soon as she got a record deal, her "real self" came out? Lol, okay.

Image isn't everything, though. Music also changes, as was the case with Gaga, who sang piano ballads before, and now sings mindless pop music. Others suffer much the same fate, with a deterioration of lyric quality and depth:

Alaina Beaton Before Major RD [Porcelain and the Tramps]:

"Redlight District," despite its aggressive sound, is actually quite a depressing song about an unfortunate girl's life as a prostitute, filled with drugs and 'black-tied dirty old men' cheating on their wives by seeking her services. Gives you something to think about, if nothing else, since this is someone's reality, somewhere in the world.

Alaina Beaton After Major RD:

More aptly named, "This is What Selling Out Looks Like." But at least Alaina can at least claim she was bullied in school and dressed differently, and that is largely true from a plethora of evidence from her pre Major Label days...

But still, my point is this is nothing new to the industry, and while Gaga is horrendously overrated, she shouldn't be demonized for being a sellout any more than others are. It's a fairly common practice. The only thing I really hate about Gaga is the compulsive [bad] lying about her own life story.

^Yeah I don't get that either, but I guess her inflation is mostly in the sales department, since she's had a lot of no. 01 singles. But at least she's cute and she hasn't gotten unjustly hailed as the next [insert major musician here]. I think articles have tried insinuating she might break one of Michael's records, but that in itself doesn't count as comparing her to him per se. I don't think anyone in their right mind would seriously attempt to make that comparison.

I think the appeal with Perry is in that her lyrics are somewhat juvenile yet still somehow "adult," so she appeals to the audience Taylor Swift misses, and a broader set of people are able to relate to what she has to say. She's also not as vulgar as Gaga/Rihanna are, but is still not exactly a "good girl" like Swift, so she's sort of in the middle, which is the way most people are and I think that's a large part of her appeal. She portrays the image of the typical girl next door: pretty, somewhat dorky, fun, and neither overly good or bad. Naturally, people see themselves in that image and thus like her/want her to do well.

That's my guess from my observations of the way she presents herself and the kind of people who tend to gravitate towards her and her work. I could very obviously be mistaken in my impression, but I throw in my two cents on the matter nonetheless.

Well all in all........the whole mainstream part of the music industry is overrated........

If people actually made and released quality music.......there would be far less pirating!!!!

Idina Menzel. I'm not sure how many people here know her, but she originated the role of Elphaba in Wicked: The Musical, and she plays Shelby on Glee (Rachel Berry's biological mother). I think she is talented, but very overrated. People described her to me as "amazing and spectacular, one of the best female singers in the world", so I had high expectations. When I finally heard her, I thought she was very average. I find her quite thin and nasal, and to me, her voice just lacks emotion. It's like she sings simply because she can.

Also, Rihanna is overrated. I find her whiny and nasal. She gets a lot of airplay where I live (especially S&M), and I think that there other talents who deserve it much more than she does.

That song is a crime against humanity.

Thank you! Someone who understands my hatred for that song.

Also, I'm expecting a good verbal beating for this, but... Madonna. I like some songs, and she is talented, but she's not the best. Her singing is nothing that makes me go "wow, she's amazing, I love this".

Britney is quite overrated too. She used to be decent, when her songs were not autotuned and had a meaning behind them. She needs to sing with her natural voice again; when Jive signed her, they made her sing with a nasal voice because they believed she would sell more records that way (and well, they were right). It's a shame that few people know that the woman does have a real voice, and real talent.

^^ I was never a Madonna fan, but she's a phenomenon. There are artists who are famous for their voices and there are ones who are famous for being entertainers - which means they might have inferior voices to some others, but they make up for it in terms of creativity (songwriting), dance and image. I think Madonna was never really famous for her voice, but I wouldn't say she's overall overrated. But then the term "overrated" is tricky because it's always relative to something. If someone says Madonna is the best singer ever lived, then that's overrated, true. But I don't think even her fans would claim something like that. She was famous for the whole package.

LOL, I can't believe I'm defending Madonna. I never bought a record of hers, I'm no fan at all but to me longevity is one of the measures of true greatness and surely Madonna is very successful at that. She must know something.

She is one of the greatest entertainers of all time, no doubt about that. I haven't seen much of her, but she can dance, and she has stage presence. I guess to me, she's forgettable; I don't find any of her songs memorable. Like MJ for example, his songs stay with me long after they have finished playing. Nothing about Madonna makes her memorable for me. I very mediocre compared to other artists. She is very, very talented, but I think I mainly class her as overrated because people around me are obsessed with her, whilst I don't see the fuss.

I don't know if I've voted here and if I have I can't remember for wich one I voted.

Anyway, right now, my choice is definitely RHIANNA.
Awful voice, awful songs and horrible videos. She used to be pretty but now she's becoming more and more vulgar.

Rihanna, definitely. She's a mediocre singer at her best, has really bad videos and she's just so full of herself. She also gets a LOT of attention for nothing... Well actually, for her ass mostly, certainly not for her skills.

I don't think I understand the meaning of the word because I really don't think "artists" like Rihanna are rated to begin with. Their just kinda there and popular.

After voting for Rihanna on the list, I am seriously surprised to see that Rihanna has less voted than Taylor, Gaga and Beyoncé. The other three are far more talented than she is.

Lady Gaga is very talented, to me. I've seen videos of her playing piano and singing, and is shows that she can sing, and play instruments. I wish she'd record an album with her real vocals (that the studio don't mess around with later) and her playing piano. I would love to hae that album.

Rihanna. The other women in the list have some type of factor that makes them true artists.

Taylor Swift , writes
Lady Gaga ,plays the piano
Beyonce ,sings
Britney Spears , use to be a good entertainer
Rihanna is all image and no talent. Her star will fall soon.

I voted for Lady Gaga. I feel that some people, especially before the Born This Way album came out, thought she was amazingly talented, original and groundbreaking, which I don't think she is. She has talent; she can sing, play the piano and write songs, and I respect that. It's just that I don't think she's this incredibly original pop genius some people claim she is, so in that sense I think she's sometimes overrated. I think she's more talented than for example Rihanna, but I wouldn't say Rihanna is overrated, because I don't really think she's that highly rated at all. She has popular songs and that's it. I don't think anyone thinks she's very talented.

Gaga is talented, but I don't get why so much publicity over her. She sings and has a decent voice. That's it.

I don't know much about Rihanna and admittedly don't really like her, but I found this:

If that is what she sounds like, not bad, but not exceptional either. Like Travis said, she seems to be one of those people who simply is popular but isn't really "rated."

And for those of you saying Gaga has some discernible talent, well, duh. That's not what's being disputed here. The point of this thread is who is overrated, as in, made out to be more than what they are. Not who has talent and who hasn't. Every single name on this list has SOME amount of talent, some more than others arguably. However... the question asked of us is who is the most overrated.

I still stand by my answer, by and large Lady Gaga is the most overrated. She has an okay voice, it's not really great, and she can play the piano. Big. Frickin. Whoop. Amy Lee easily kicks Gaga's ass and mops the floor with her fake-ass wigs and dumb costumes when it comes to talent in BOTH singing and piano-playing, not to mention quality lyric composition and depth [by mainstream standards], an area Gaga is severely lacking in. -cough- And other, more obscure artists, kick both their asses into next Tuesday, as much as I love Amy, it's true. -cough-

Yet when she broke onto the scene people weren't claiming Amy Lee [or any other decently multi-talented yet not exactly fully mainstream songstress with insturment-playing abilities and good lyric-writing talent] was super-amazing, etc. not because she was not talented, but because her material simply did not appeal to the consumerist, shallow horde called the American public, which readily gobbles up Gaga and co. because of their faux depth [pretending to be artistic while actually being highly commercial] and shallow lyrics [well, the songs explain themselves].

So yes, while she might have some talent, Gaga is by far the most blown out of proportion of all the names here. She remains mediocre and shallow, just like the public she and her handlers pander to. Like attracts like, and shallow sells. This doesn't just apply to music. That of course also explains how people like Rihanna are, like Travis put it, "kinda there and popular."

The trend continues as long as we let it. In this day and age image and marketing are worth more than talent. That's how people with mediocre skills like Rihanna, Gaga, Perry, etc. are able to make millions of dollars while infinitely more talented musicians receive less exposure. The same goes for television, films, etc.

It is the spirit of the times, as they say.
