Why is Bad so Good?

I don't know what it is about Bad exactly, But although I consider Dangerous and HIStory to be his artistic creative peak, Bad has always been my personal favorite album.

I grew up in the Dangerous and HIStory eras, but everything about the Bad era has always mesmerized me, From the sound and feel of the album to the accompanying short films, to his look and style during that time, I dunno, He just seemed like such a Badass during that era, lol. Also, for some reason I've always loved the tail end of the 80's despite me not having even been old enough to remember anything during it. To me, Michael has always been cool, but the late 80's where when he was at his...Baddest, lol.

And not only the Album but he also had His best Tour, His own Movie, a Video Game. It was like the apex of his career.

I would like to hear opinions from other Bad fans, Why do you love Bad?
 
Bad is not my fav album, but i LOVE Bad so here it goes lol

I think Bad is so good because Michael managed to come out of the Thriller era and put a whole new spin to his image. He solidified himself as a "superhero" AND megastar at that time I think. Every move he made during that period, right down to his style of dress built up those two things, hence why everything he did was soooo smooth and cool at the time (well, exceptionally so).

I mean look at the music videos. Bad was just the coolest thing ever. He busted out like "BAM! Bet you never seen anything like this shit before!" - which is what made that video so awesome

Then The Way You Make Me Feel, everything he did in that video was just the coolest.

Smooth Criminal - THE DEFINITION OF COOL.

...accompanied by MOONWALKER - in which he took cool and then turned it into being a freakin SUPERHERO (honestly, he was doing Transformers decades before the movies came out! lol), and put a MOVIE under his belt just in case you didn't get the point about how COOL he was. lol

Dirty Diana - he got all ROCK STAR cool, in case you didn't think he can be versatile with his coolness. Boom. There you go.

Man IN the Mirror - Grammy award performance. As if all of the above wasn't enough, now he has to try to top Motown 25 and take people to CHURCH on live television. Maaan he even got CHURCH COOL.

Liberian Girl - and of course, the king of cool at that time couldn't leave that era with out getting as many cool celebrities as he could in one video.

Not to mention Captian EO and the Pepsi commercials, JFC! Bad was so GOOD, because not ONLY was it an AMAZING album that took creative risks and introduced a new fresh and edgy sound for Michael, but it had to be his most productive era of all time. Yes, Thriller was great, but as far as all the stuff he did to promote Bad, and all the stuff that went with it - it was a TON. A ton of really awesome things he accomplished.

Now I personally don't remember the era because I was literally 1-3 years old at the time (LOL!) but from what I've seen, that was kinda how it looked like lol

I couldnt agree more with you. I have a very weak spot for that album, I wish I could be a teenager at that time and never grow up. I was born just couple of months after it was released, so everything about that album is so fascinating to me, cos I was kinda there but not there lol, if u know what i mean.

Lets start with his look, and oh boy he looked so good. The curls!!! His angel face, the last years of his more brown skin, his smile, his edgy outfits. He looked like a megastar, not from this planet. How could any woman not like him at this time? :)I mean even madonna wanted to bang him haha!

I already said that in a different thread, but the album is like a greatest hits collection to me. I love the cover of the album, the styling and everything and he just looks so bad ass.
My favorite moment from the Bad tour is when he sings Dirty Diana, the emotion he puts in that track is just electrifying. I would pay money to get HD footage of the tour. I wish though some choreography from the Bad video would be used on the actual concert as well, its such a great dance song, the production on it is just unbelievable. Its hard to even pick favorite song from this album, basicaly impossible. Even when I thought "just good friends" would be the weakest track, after I listened to it, I was like "woooow". I love it, such a fun song, and have u seen the segment about it in the Bad 25 docu, when he is in studio with Stevie? Its just a few seconds of him recording it but boy this guy had so much energy!
Cant believe Quincy didnt like Smooth criminal, and im glad Michael made sure its on album, what an iconic track, video & choreography. I also wish Leave me alone would have made it on the vinyl.

This album is a definition of the word "cool" in the late 80s for me and well, I dont think I could find enough of superlatives to describe how good it is :)
 
I totally agree, I feel BAD is the best album ever made !
It is just perfection to me, there's a song for everyone on this album, and 9 out of 11 are wrote by Michael and you can feel that, when you hear it. The variety in the tracks is amazing also.
The passion in the vocals and lyrics, it's genius. The short films added so much to each song, they captured the songs perfectly.
Then the World Tour was just breath taking, the energy, the vocals, the swagger.
He was amazing all the way through his career, but I truly believe the BAD era was the peak of his career, nobody could touch him.
 
I like every song and Man in the Mirror is the greatest song of all time in my opinion. The short films from Bad era are his best ones and nothing can beat the Bad Tour.

 
I was 18 years old when Bad was released, just graduated from high school and still reeling from the stratospheric success of everything related to Thriller. I kept wondering what in the world was he gonna do after all that.

I remember being glued to the radio when IJCSLY debuted, back in the day when all news came through radio, television, and print. I couldn't wait to buy the LP, the anticipation of a new album was so damn exciting.

It seemed like every time I watched MTV, Michael was in. your. face with a new short film. He was amazingly gorgeous, too. I remember watching the Bad World Tour (on MTV) again and again after taping it with a VCR. Then the '88 Grammy performance. And MOONWALKER. Couldn't wait to get my hands on that, either. OMG, everything he did at the time was exceptionally innovative and the music, of course, remains phenomenal.

It was the constant promotion, (singles, videos, tour, movie) matched with the music, that I remember most. He reached millions and millions of people because of it.

Because of EVERYTHING YOU WROTE! :lol: you pretty much summed up my feelings towards it and why I love it sooooooo much! I'm truly obsessed with anything having to do with Bad era, I wasn't even old enough either, since I was born in 1988 and I didn't experience it at all... I was alive at least and that makes me happy :lol: regardless I've always loved the late 80's (style and music-wise, the sounds and everything just :woohoo:) and needless to say, I love the fact that Michael pretty much ruled the world during that time as well! I have nothing more to say, you just spoke the truth right there! So thank you, it's crazy but sometimes it's really hard for me to put my love for him into words, that's how much I love him and that era in particular :rofl:
 
What can't you love about Bad?! I mean LAWDY he was being all sexy on stage and shy and cute offstage, the album wa a complete 180 from Thriller testing different sounds, all the songs are so different but fit together so well! The tour was just phenomenal, sexy and just so well done. I think that was his turning point saying I'm an adult now and if I was to live this way deal with it. He became very business savy, and made great business decisions. He was able to do things they way he wanted and didn't have to answer to anyone but himself, he felt in control and had his hand in everything! From the lighting, choreography, angles of the camera, everything! What isn't there to love, Bad era is my true love.
 
I was a kid in the bad era, so reviews and such went over my head. It's so weird to see that the album was mostly panned by critics at the time, as well as his dancing/videos.

Meanwhile, that didn't hurt sales, airplay, or the tour obviously.
 
Bad is tougher than Thriller, get used to it....











....No just kidding... I think every album from MJ is brilliant in it's own way.
 
I get the feeling that Bad is the album that came out of the period in which Michael, for the first time in his life, felt totally at the helm of his ship. He seemed so self-assured and confident, I think that confidence bled through into his work. More aggressive vocals in the studio, astronomical swag on stage lol, Bad was the musical record of Michael coming into his own not only as an artist, but also as a man. :heart:
 
Im so hooked on the Bad 25 disc 2. Now i understand why he wanted to release 3 disc album. So much good material, especially Price of fame. So autobiographical and so much emotion in that song. Loove it. Michael again showing writing skills of a genius. (wanted to write that in the Bad25 thread but i guess its closed)

Agreed. His songwriting really flourished throughout the years and it saddens me that so many people think that MJ rarely wrote/help wrote his own songs, simply because it's 'pop' or he wrote so few songs on Thriller (which is funny because most of the biggest hits were written by MJ).

I really admire how Michael took a huge step with Bad, taking charge of most of it's writing. It was such a bold step for any artist really, jumping from writing a small portion of their album to the majority of it.
 
This was also the first time that Michael was not associated with J5 at all - he was his own and I think the Bad era right up to This Is It pretty much defined Michael Jackson.

Today is the 27th birthday of BAD. I cant say enough of good things about the album and the BAD era. It must have been such a celebration for Michael to have it released just 2 days after his birthday. I wish I was old enough at that time to experience the whole thing.
 
BAD is and will always be my top favorite album! First of all, I love 80's music in general and this album does have a very 80's sound. Yet, it somehow also has a timeless sound. That's all thanks to Michael and the very talented production crew. Michael knew what he was doing when he set out to make this album and it helped that he spent nearly two years working on it. And for it to have a single for nearly every song on that album, that's quite an achievement.

He wanted to make an album that was different from "Thriller", he made it, alright!

While I was born during when the BAD Era was going strong, I actually wish I could have been old enough to witness the hype that his album brought along. The whole world had to answer right then as Mike told them once again...

Bad - my together with Dangerous it's my favorite album.
On Bad it's all about Michael. The lyrics he wrote, the choreography in music videos. Just awesome.
In my opinion Bad is underrated. For example on the Grammy's Bad should have won at least 3 Grammy's. At least!
The influences Bad had for other artists and fans all around the world. Around the Bad era Michael was on his strongest. His best. When I look for Bad tour concerts my jaw just drops how some fans react to Michael. How they faint, how they scream for Michael...

The way I see it is this. He just came off the huge success of Thriller. He was feeliing on top of the world. The energy is all there. "Ain't no mountain that I can't climb, baby. All is going my way." That sums it up. The ego spilled over into the Moonwalker project too.
 
Because it's BAD! His coolest image, outfits, sunglasses, hairstyle, best short films, TV commercials, his best tour, the BAD logo are just the coolest things. I wish I were old enough to enjoy the BAD era but I was born in 88.
 
Because everything good is bad. Like coke, candy, chocolate, alcohol etc
 
It's so good because it was the album released after Thriller, which not only set the bar high but also it was even more of a transition into his edgier era of music, especially with songs like Dirty Diana, Smooth Criminal, Speed Demon, and of course Bad itself. It was fire, and in my opinion as good or better than Thriller. That album has so much emotion on songs like Liberian Girl and IJCSLY, and has an epic duet with him and Stevie Wonder.
