Hello everyone! My name is Karen, and what a day I just had!

OK well let me tell you a little about my dog. Sam is a Miniature Schnauzer. He is 14 years old, and is diabetic and has kidney problems. He is pretty much blind now from the diabetes (he has had it for almost 4 years now). Having said all this Sam-as most animals do-has adjusted to losing his sight just fine and has a very good quality of life. Until last Monday he came to work with me everyday. I was a Veterinarian Technician. He did not come to work with me because he was sick, but because I have been in the Pet Field one way or the other since I have had him and he has always been able to come to work with me. I just wish he got paid too. LOL...

OK so anyways today I was home with Sam and my husband too. It was about mid afternoon and we were taking a snooze. I was on the couch and my husband was in the bedroom. It's kinda hard to explain the way my home is set up, but we also live with his mom, sister and her son. We have our own apartment, but share the washing machine which is on our level (the basement).

So we have hardwood floors and I was awoken by hearing Sam walk up and down the hall leading to the yard. That hall is also where the washing machine is (there is a door between our apartment and the back hall). It was weird because I had taken Sam out about an hour before and he usually does not have to go that soon after.

So he keeps walking up and down the hall, then over to me to nudge me to get up. Then to the bedroom to get my husband. He never does that to go out. So my husband said he'd get up and take him. So my when my husband got to the door leading out to the back yard instead of taking a left to go out once he opened the door Sam went right. He was like Sam come on this way! Then he looked over to see if Sam was coming and there was his mom! She had fallen down the stairs! She was pretty out of it too. My husband yelled for me to come and I came running thinking it was Sam. I see Sam walking back by me into our apartment (the door between the back hall and our apartment was still open), so I am like what is going on?

I get to my Husband and see his mom. I run and call 911. She was rushed the hospital, and did not really come to all the way until she was there. And even then I think they had to do something to bring her out of it. She fractured her foot and had a bad cut too. She is home now and will be OK.

So while sitting in the waiting room at the hospital it hit us what happened. What Sam did. Where she fell, there was no way we would have heard her even if she was awake enough to call us. And we would have not heard-with our ears-her fall. Sam did. And he knew something was not right. Even though she wasn't calling to us, he knew something was wrong. He must have just felt. it. And it's not the first time he has done something like this too.

If Sam had not alerted us my mother law very well could have died if we found her later on. Or lost a lot of blood from her gash on her foot. There is a lot that could have went wrong if Sam did not alert us today.

Sam is the greatest dog I have, and ever will own. I will always have dogs in my life I am sure, and will never hold one up to the standard Sam has set, or love them any less than I do Sam, but I realized a long time ago that Sam is my once in a life time dog. If you are a dog owner you will have that dog of your life. And you'll know it too when you have them. Everyone always says Sam is spoiled by me because he has so many toys and what not, no no no it's the other way around. I am the one spoiled by him by how good and amazing he is.

When he did start to have kidney problems I was told (and from doing this for work did already know) that I won't have him too much longer......So each day I have with him, especially being himself and healthy is a blessing right now (for this reason I am almost happy I got laid off). And my husband and I are planning once I get back to work to have a child. He and I have said that our child will probably be the only person we know with a dog for a guardian angel (Sam).......

Thanks for reading everyone. I just wanted to make you guys smile with this story.....
