Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary - Estate Announcement Page 66

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

I love those two. They're just all out nice guys too.

And "Find Me A Girl" is an adorably wonderful song. Love it to death.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

I just hope more people who actually worked on OTW will be involved.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

when will this be ready..... and it safe to say this is an independent side project with no OTW reedition

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Nothing to do with OTW, but nice!

They can discuss how the Jackson brothers were attempting to show their artistic and professional independence after leaving Motown. Michael continued that with his first adult, solo effort outside of Motown. It puts the OTW release in context if these interviews are used.

The documentary will have not have the appropriate context if that is true.

Actually I hope they interview the brothers or at least show them from the Sylvia Chase interview at the time.
One of the best interviews. Not her, but love Michael and the tour footage.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

This isn't really related to the documentary, but it is related to Off The Wall and not noteworthy enough for it's own thread, so I thought I'd post it here.

Anyhow, I was on the iTunes Store today and they have a new section called 'Essentials' that they are advertising on the front page. Clicking on it brings you to the Essentials section and the first big banner at the top of the page? Michael Jackson's Off The Wall! :D (and if you look under it, you'll notice Thriller is amongst the showcase for Top All-Time Essential Albums :D)

I just think it's really cool seeing Michael prominently displayed on the world's biggest music store, especially being the first banner in that section! ^_^

I'm excited for this documentary

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Come on Triumph Tour Blu-Ray...

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Hope we'll hear something soon!

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

I'm looking forward to it too and certainly cause I loved the BAD docu by Spike Lee
Just another 'treasured' memory then hey

GO Spike Lee :clapping:

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Lets hope ppl can actually get to see it this time unlike the feck up with the bad doc that to me made it a waste of time

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

I liked the Bad 25 documantary so can't wait to see this. I hope they use a lot of studio and behind-the-scenes videos.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

I am interested in how this will be presented. TV or with a album rerelease. I can't see it being profitable as a stand alone video release.

So this is interesting, might have no relevance to the doco but who knows. I was at JB Hi-Fi a few hours ago and whilst browsing, went through the CDs. I noticed the spine for 'Off The Wall' was different (blue text on black) so I pulled it out and for some reason, they had a brand new CD using the original artwork, not the Special Edition artwork.

(Not the best photos, you can thank the lights above me)

But what peeked my curiosity further was the fact that they were reissued this year, as you can see in the close-up of the back it states "© 1979, 2015". There's no new material, nothing that special about it so I have a feeling it might be part of some Sony/Epic 'Legacy' Collection or something (like "Michael Jackson Icon" or "20th Century Masters") but I couldn't see any other albums like this and none of MJ's other albums seemed to have been reissued this year. Makes you wonder why they reissued it...

I am very interested in how this documentary will be packaged and marketed to ensure maximum profit. This is such a precious era.

I couldn't agree more.
I really really hope he includes stuff from Triumph tour, the Sylvia Chase interview, the Disney and Diana specials. I want to relive watching those on TV.

Didn't Spike run Bad 25 on the film festival circuit to attract interest and buyers? I thought that's how ABC bought it for their thanksgiving programming.

My only "gripe" with Bad 25 doc is the stuff he left on the cutting room floor-bc he said he had at least an hour of extras for the DVD. I'm sure he did-just about everything was being filmed at that time.

Bad has been reissued as well. I was equally surprised as you when I saw it at Walmart. I thought for a moment it was a stray copy left over from pre-2001!

There are also single disc HIStory albums. The 2nd disc!

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

^^ Other MJ albums have been reissued it seems. Good find.

Barbee0715, I believe the Estate attempts their best to not include footage they do not own. I do not know how much of that list you posted they would not own and thus, have to purchase for use. I do not know if Bad25 participated in film festivals. I do know it had a theatrical releases. I do not know why the Bad25 DVD did not include extras (unfortunately). I can only reason the Estate not owning footage.

Interesting! Next time I go into JB I'll see if they have any different ones.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

I'm not that hopeful after the Bad 25 doc. If it's anything like that, there will be cool things here and there no doubt, but otherwise just a lot of talking heads. If it is going to mostly interviews, I want interviews and stories from people that were there in the trenches with Michael during that period and while making the album.

Wait. Does everyone know about that? I didn't! I'd like a copy! Surely this is the first time that's been made available?

This one disc was at Walmart? I need to run down and get one too!!

I think that's what Alec was saying. I've always felt that album should be released separately. It would be neat to have it look and feel like just a normal album.

*Edit - it appears editions of just the single disc were released in Spain and Italy back in 2011. I've ordered a copy.*

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Maybe off-topic however; I always thought the packaging of greatest hits with disc 2 was brilliant. It truly did capture Michael's history up to that time. Without the first disc, the second disc loses context.

I agree with that idea because it is autobiographical. But expensive. :(. Esp for people like me who already had those original songs in at least 2 or 3 formats.
I'm glad they released it as a choice. I'd like a new CD.

I will def buy the single disc. Great addition to the collection

Given what had occurred however it did feel a little...insecure? Is that the right word? Like controversial new material could only be insured against the blockbusters.
