Michael Jackson Returns To UK Album Charts

As Duffy claims singles glory...

Michael Jackson made his return to the UK album charts yesterday as the 25th anniversary edition of 'Thriller' charted at number three.
The album, which features new remixes by Kanye West and will.I.am, was the charts highest new entry.
Jack Johnson and Nickelback held on to the first and second positions in the album charts respectively, while Morrissey’s greatest hits compilation debuted at number five.

Meanwhile, in the singles charts, rising star Duffy finally dislodged Basshunter from the top of the countdown with her single, ‘Mercy’.
The singer's debut single, which is released on general sale on February 28th, topped the charts on downloads alone.
Elsewhere, Nickelback’s ‘Rockstar’ stayed at number two while Adele’s ‘Chasing Pavements’ fell to number five.

Michael Jackson Mentionings

Jack Johnson Keeps Michael Jackson From Number One

by Paul Cashmere - February 18 2008
Jack Johnson's 'Sleep Through The Static' has maintained its number one position for a second week in both Australia and the UK despite competition from the reduxed Michael Jackson album 'Thriller'.
'Thriller debuted at number two in Australia with sales of 12,790 units but that wasn't enough to beat Johnson's 16,463 units winning score.
In the UK, 'Thriller' came in at number three behind Johnson and Nickelback.
'Thriller' has been reissued to mark its 25th anniversary. Jackson has created new 2008 mixes of some of the classic songs with Kanye West, will.i.am, Fergie and Akon.
'Sleep Through The Static' is Johnson's 5th studio album.

'It's the wild west out there'

The sparkle of this week's Brit awards should temporarily ease the music industry's gloom. But the Sony BMG boss tells Owen Gibson there remains profit to be made - and that he's still in it for the music

He recalls sitting in a meeting in the US while head of marketing at Epic. "I remember this guy walking in and saying we would get a 200ft statue of Michael Jackson and sail it down the Thames, and 'it's going to cost £40m.' Instead of coming up with great ideas, we started thinking about how we could spend the most money."

Jackson's 'Thriller' moves live on in movies, ads, videos
February 17, 2008
Michael Jackson's extended dance break in the ''Thriller'' video has turned out to be just as iconic, if not more so, than the album. Movies incorporate the moves into their plot, and homemade videos of people imitating Jackson's dramatic choreography regularly pop up on the YouTube most-viewed list.

Here are some recent favorites:

Jennifer Garner from ''13 Going on 30'' (2004): Garner's character Jenna saves a boring work party by busting out the ''Thriller'' moves and corrals a club full of stuffy execs into a big line dance.
The Cebu Provincial Detention and RehabilitationCenter inmates (2007): The warden of the Filipino prison decided to require inmates to perform the ''Thriller'' dance as a way to make them exercise regularly. The resulting video, which features more than 1,500 inmates performing the dance, became an Internet sensation.

Naomi Campbell and the dancing SoBe Life Water lizards (2008): The theme of this commercial, which debuted at this year's Super Bowl, is, essentially, drinking SoBe Life Water makes you want to do the ''Thriller'' dance, which Campbell and the computer-generated lizards do.

Cast of ''Thriller Live'' on the London Tube (2008): To drum up interest in ''Thriller Live,'' a touring revue featuring songs of Michael Jackson and the Jackson Five, cast members pretend to spontaneously break into the ''Thriller'' routine on a moving train and then return to their seats as if it was unplanned. The stunt (and the commuters' reactions) gets posted on YouTube and draws worldwide attention.

Thriller Time.......reviews celebrating T25’s release
Here, nine Los Angeles Times staff writers and contributors offer their views of the album's original tracks.

"Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' ": Hot as Jackson was after the quantum leap that 1979's "Off the Wall" brought his solo career, few expected him to match, much less dramatically surpass, those heights so quickly. But "Thriller's" leadoff track immediately established the new album as another giant step forward. It connected to "Off the Wall" with an irresistible Afro-Caribbean funk dance-floor pulse and peppery horn accents akin to "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," then rocketed to new heights with even more sinewy bass and guitar lines propelling his impossibly nimble vocals. If "Off the Wall" demonstrated that Jackson was a kid no more, "Somethin' " signaled the full maturity of his musical acumen. All the more impressive for a song built on just two chords.
— Randy Lewis

"Baby Be Mine": Imagine if this weren't the better of the two non-singles from a monster album but a one-shot single by an unknown artist. The sweet midtempo glide of "Baby Be Mine" probably would have bubbled into the R&B Top 20 and gotten lots of roller-skate play, been included on recent mix CDs by cutting-edge European DJs and been remade as a slow jam at least three times. We would have wondered at the bionic singer, the effervescent synth arrangements, the popping groove. In short, it would sound like the hidden classic it remains, even in plain sight.
— Michaelangelo Matos

"The Girl Is Mine": Treacly, insipid, weak, embarrassing — that's how detractors describe Jackson's gentle sparring match with his then-favorite Beatle, Paul McCartney. Borne forward on a beat light as hair mousse and synth flourishes supplied by the guys from Toto, it's a long way from the paranoid funk of "Billie Jean." But its spun-sugar vocal line is like the G-rated version of "Unchained Melody," and the cornball lyrics (I know, "doggone") invoke a show-tune Arcadia that both MJ and Macca fought to preserve as pop got ever filthier. The lift Jackson gives the word "endlessly" midsong can still make a listener feel like she's swimming in a sea of Love's Baby Soft.
— Ann Powers

"Thriller": If ever a video killed the radio star, "Thriller" was it. The song was adequately groovy — funked-out beat, lyrics seemingly lifted from some little kid's "scary storybook" — but the video was legendary: Costing $800,000, the 14-minute mini-film was the most expensive video of its time. Back then it was over the top; to today's viewer, jaded by bloated-budget videos, it still looks epic — and deliciously campier than ever. That dialogue ("I'm not like other guys")! That Vincent Price rap interlude! And, most of all, those choreographed zombies, dancing in a style that — thanks to Usher, Ne-Yo and Chris Brown — still gets its close-up on MTV.
— Baz Dreisinger

"Beat It": A secret not closely guarded: The uncredited guitarist who whipped out the fluttering, squealing solo on this ode to macho cowardice was Eddie Van Halen, whose extracurriculars ranked among the provocations for singer David Lee Roth's 1985 departure from the megalithic rock band Van Halen. The aerodynamic metal flight pumped crossover fuel that would boost the success of "Thriller" — a gimmick Jackson would flog later with spots from Slash and Carlos Santana. Without the Van Halen precedent, there might have been no collaboration of Run-DMC and Aerosmith on the 1986 rap/rock version of "Walk This Way."
— Greg Burk

"Billie Jean": Twenty-five years later, "Thriller's" central chamber has lost none of its fevered mystery. This is where the album's material plane gives way to a haunted interior, excavated by that remorseless bass line and shaped by a taut interplay of instruments — the arrangement is ingenious, so lean and spare that it's hard to accept that there are three synthesizers at work. Jackson finds a new voice here, a victim's voice that shudders in the shadows of this remarkable sonic space, lashing at his own naivete and at the false accusers who were just starting to gather at his door.
— Richard Cromelin

"Human Nature":Jackson is a sensual vampire flying over the city looking for juicy necks to bite. A template for new jack swing and hip-hop soul ballads, "Human Nature" is comparatively slower and more intimate than "Thriller's" other songs. "If this town is just an apple, let me take a bite," quivers Jackson's voice over a cascading synthesizer and percolating bass line. Though written by John Bettis and Steve Porcaro of Toto, the lyrics resonate with Jackson's yearning to break free from his tower of celebrity and mingle with young people in a "city that winks its sleepless eye."
— Serena Kim

"P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)": It's all about the chipmunk. The production has a compelling charm already; it's not as forceful as "Beat It" or as slick as "Human Nature," but those squiggly synths and chewy bass lines do their work well. But besides the robo-accented "P.Y.T." hook, what seals the deal is that helium-pitched voice after the bridge. Honestly, to this day, I still can't decipher what line is blurted out, but just the chipmunk effect has been enough to imprint the song in my head. Given that Kanye West looped the same passage for his Grammy-winning "Good Life" only confirms I'm not alone in my infatuation.
— Oliver Wang

"The Lady in My Life": And the '80s pop big bang ends with a ... whimper? So it might have seemed at the time, this Rod Temperton-penned and arranged trifle closed "Thriller" on an unconvincingly romantic note — even pre-scandal. Yet today, "Lady" shines for its classic simplicity and nuanced craft, a verse melody straight from vintage Burt Bacharach (the muted trumpet early on leaves no doubt) topped with a chorus that's almost a Stevie Wonder homage. And Jackson's delivery is refreshingly unaffected — not until shortly before the final fade does he even let out an ooo! No, not a whimper. A sigh.

Sony/ATV’s “Musical Notes” #14 - Crosby, Stills & Nash!
Feb 11, 2008

Sony/ATV’s “Musical Notes” #14
A fortnightly newsletter highlighting some of the many classic songs in the Sony/ATV Music Publishing catalog.

From Alan Warner, Creative Consultant

*****************

“By the time we got to Woodstock
We were half a million strong
And everywhere was a song and celebration”

Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock” was the first Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young hit single following CS&N’s debut charters: “Marrakesh Express” and “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes”. Read about these and some of the other earth-shattering compositions by David, Stephen and Graham who together left us indelible memories of their stunning three-part harmonies.

*****************

Songs by CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH

In the 1960’s, the term ‘supergroup’ was used to describe bands made up of superstar members of different rock groups. Crosby, Stills & Nash were the quintessential example of such a collaboration, each of whom had carved out illustrious careers before joining forces in the summer of 1968: David Crosby formerly of the Californian folk rock group The Byrds, Stephen Stills of the equally legendary west coast country rock band Buffalo Springfield and Graham Nash who was a founder member of the hit- laden British pop/rock group The Hollies.

Joined later by an equally celebrated fourth member – Neil Young (also formerly of Buffalo Springfield) – they became a major success: their soaring, ethereal vocal harmonies and acoustic accompaniment instantly capturing the attention of audiences worldwide.

The debut self-titled Crosby, Stills & Nash LP in 1969 was particularly powerful introducing their trademark sound and another highspot was the first Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young collaboration titled “Déjà Vu” a year later. Later, Crosby & Nash released both solo and duo albums and the following selection of the large catalog of C, S & N compositions controlled by Sony/ATV gives an overview of highlights from their individual songwriting contained in the albums released by the various aggregations.

The themes of their songs range from political statements to wistful romantic tales.

I usually have the Steve Harvey on in the morning but today I had Tom Joyner on for some reason.. well just when I decide to change the station..that news anchor Lee Thomas came on.. speaking about his Vitiligo... and Jackie Reid (the news person on the show).. asked him about Michael J.. Lee said.. I can tell u that Michael does have Vitiligo ...and he has it on 80% of his body....etc...

for the 1st time Tom and company.. did not make any MJ jokes.. this was one of the reasons I stopped listening to that show becuz they were so disrespectful to Michael...

I was so relieved... and happy that they didnt make any Mj jokes ..its like the finally understood...

especially when Lee said.. why "he thinks" Michael worn one glove...

Wow. I called their manager yesterday and left a message. I asked why they had not played any songs from Thriller 25 yet. I said it had sold out all over Milwaukee so there was a definate interest in the album. I said For All Time was my fave but younger listeners would probably like the mixes with Will.i.am, Kenya, or Akon. I asked them to play the album and asked again if they would reply and let me know why they hadn't played it.

I didn't get a chance to check my answering machine yet although I doubt they would reply.

When I had the station on today I they gave a shoutout to Thriller 25 saying Michael was making history (Black History Month) with the 25th aniversery of Thiller. That was the first I heard them mention it. Still no spins of it though.

Is that what happened?!! And that's what the media spun to MJ having 'encouraged' Feldman to read porn? Where does the porn come into it? Did Michael like show him pictures from a magazine to explain or was the 'porn' the book? I'd love to learn exactly what Feldman really said.

it had nothing to do with porn. according to corey feldman it was a book with humans genitals and venereal diseases and he got very curious so michael explained to him a few things about what the book was saying. it was like the biology books the kids study in high school.
nothing to do with pornography.
feldman was very mad at michael for not being his friend anymore so he probably exaggerated a bit.

Yes, I don´t remeber the exakt words but I think he said he had found the book on a table and asked MJ about it and he explained and that was pretty much it. I think that was back in the 80s. He did not think much more about it and I think he said he had defened MJ many times but with the Arvizo allegations he started to think about it again and he was not sure about his innocences anymore. Something like that.

Thriller" Continues To Thrill Music Fans 25 Years Later

Jan Westmark - Celebrity News Service
Los Angeles, CA (CNS) - Michael Jackson's "Thriller" is tagged as the "world's best-selling album" with more than 100 million copies sold. Thanks to those staggering numbers, Epic/Legacy has released a 25th-anniversary edition of "Thriller."
The anniversary edition features five remixes, an unreleased track and a DVD.
Critics claim that the collection of songs on the album can be seen as a statement of freedom from Jackson, who at the time was a young artist.
Regardless of his tabloid domination over the years, the anniversary release reminds music fans of Jackson's ability as an artist.

Thanks for the news, and Rasta Pasta, I love you! You be doing the darn thing.

show also has the Michael Baisen show and Michael Baisen did 1hr of MJ on Friday - 15th Feb .. and he played T25...nothing but love ...

Damn! I missed it! We have Michael Baisdon in Philly and I think he is an MJ fan. Tom Joyner and his sell out crew nice to Mike? Ain't that something? They are still fools though. I can't support peeps that say things like "MJ needs to go to jail" or "I will never let my children watch MJ". They gets no love. Steve Harvey Radio Show - I love the show, funny as hell and I was WANTING for them to do Thriller 25 and I MISSED IT! Darn!

Also, when are some people going to stop putting "moments" from the trial? We want the media to move on but some fans can't do the same.

the media will never fully move on from the trial, and just cuz it was bad and it happened, doesn't mean we should act like it NEVER happened lol

I found this quote from feldman: "The book was focused on venereal diseases and the genitalia and he sat down with me and he explained it to me, showed me some different pictures and discussed what those meant. I was kind of grossed out by it. I didn't think of it as a big deal and for all these years, I probably never thought twice about it"
